What Is… A Pastor
This whole series was spawned by this question for me. A couple of months ago we had a few more high-profile pastors fail morally. You have the classics from my childhood like Jimmy Swagart, Jim Baker, Benny Hinn and Paula White, as well as the weird money shenanigans of people like Oral Roberts, Kenneth Copeland, Jesse Duplantis and the list goes on. Recently, Robert Morris, Tony Evans, Carl Lentz, and Bill Hybels as well as others like Mark Driscoll for bullying which is actually more of a pervasive problem than you might think. They’re not hiding it.
When you give a pastor to much money, sex and power, they get corrupt. It’s probably more of a risk than most people because of their ability to insulate themselves from criticism. (Jim Baker story.) Money sex and power. Ironically, this is what they like to preach about most. Being an unapproachable millionaire celebrity is incongruent with being a pastor. This is not a statement about all large churches. In the 80s it was televangelist. Today, the megachurch is the habitat for these wolves. Every mega church? No. But I believe mega churches should be an anomaly, not the objective.
It can happen in small churches too though. I’ve known and seen pastors manipulate people by leveraging spiritual gifts, and misusing scripture like they have a hotline to God that you can’t have. There’s only one mediator between God and men. We hope you enjoy!
