How to Create Obstacles and Stakes in Your Story

Everyone knows that in storytelling you follow a character -- a hero.
And most people know that that hero's journey is defined by their goal. What they hope to achieve or gain drives the story forward.
But you will lose your audience if your hero doesn't face formidable obstacles and the stakes aren't high. THAT is why we care about what happens to a character.
Goals = what a character has to gain
Stakes = what a character has to lose
And what they have to lose is often more compelling.
