Seth Godin - Leadership vs. Management - What it means to make a difference
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 тра 2024
- The world-renowned marketing and leadership author Seth Godin talks about the difference between leadership and management, the confusion surrounding them, and why the world needs more leaders.
Key Points:
• Management works well in terms of increasing economic efficiency and productivity. But, in the face of rapid change, the world needs leadership to get through this stage of unprecedented transformation.
• You should strive for excellence. Producing something truly great is the only way to build competitive advantage because sophisticated robots, artificial intelligence, and low-paid labor will handle the trivial job of assuring quality.
• You should focus on “soft skills” which are actually “real skills”. Those are the characteristics that differentiate a potential employee from a robot.
• Effective leadership can help companies navigate difficulties and failures, and eventually find successful processes to get forward.
Questions to consider:
• How can you become more of a leader than a manager?
• How can you and your organization strive for excellence instead of just quality?
• Are you focusing on real skills?
• How can you make better processes in order to fail more efficiently?

* A leader solves problems even if they are not on his agenda. Wow!
*Write your own story.
*Quitting is for winners not losers but you should know when to quit.
Thank you so much for this insightful video.
These points are very powerful!
Managers do things right,
Leaders do the right things
I participated in Seth's leadership workshop at a facility called The Assemblage where he taught this material and it was so powerful everyone was fired up inspired for months. Highly recommend.
Hi Adam sounds like something I’d like to experience can you give me anymore information I’d like to participate.. if you don’t mind , thanks
@@teddy7426 unfortunately the facility is no longer open, so best bet is to go to Seth's website and sign up for whatever is next
Wow! Excited to join one of his workshop now
Absolutely not. Gitwreckd kid
How can I join the workshop
Seth breaks this down to a simple understanding. Leaders definitely need training because leadership is a skill. The advertising industry showed me for years there was a huge difference between a leader and a boss. I learned so much from creative leaders who wanted nothing more but to share their knowledge with me for preparation of higher opportunities. When you're invested in the growth of employees there's no time left in the day for micromanaging. ~ Tim
I agree. I was fortunate to have some of the best Navy Chiefs train me in leadership when I was an officer. Once you have a good handle on leadership, your people feel they want to follow you not because they have to but because they want to. As a leader, you provide them with all the tools they need and provide cover for issues that arise. If they did something great, it was because of their effort. If things went south, it was because I failed. Give them room to grow and the desire to succeed and they will do great things.
@@anthonymonge7815 Indeed. I would also add that being a leader is sensationalized more today. It sounds cool. Unfortunately, the hype creates a cloudy definition. Some of the misinterpretation could be the effects from the "be your own boss" movement.
Here's the issue. A percentage of people today that are blessed to be their own boss don't have employees to lead due to advanced technology. Most people use the term boss because of ownership - and mistakenly use leadership in the same context. However, it's not the same agreement. Leadership requires a third party to influence. ~Tim

The starting vedio caught up my attention, I realised that in order for us to win the game we need to think, and do our tactics and start to manage on how it's gonna work. Thank you so much Mr. Godin for sharing your amazing knowledge.
Love the way Seth breaks down seemingly simple topics and goes so deep and in depth.
He is fantastic 👏
Seth NEVER disappoints. A gifted leader that is so generous is pouring out his treasures.

The best way I ever heard leadership vs. Management explained. Just shared it with my clients. Every leader should hear this!
Seth Godin is tremendously great. I'm look forward to meeting him on Next MBA Marketing soon.
This presentation is so damn good. Seth's really nailed it and gave us a lot of new ways of thinking. Great to see him back again on the stage.
Can you explain to me then what his point is? I just hear a bunch of analogies and can’t make the connection to business.
@@theswingmechanic I’m with you. I think a lot of what he said was fluff.
to be important in some way Cost can make a difference in deciding on a college. Your help made a big difference. It may not matter to you, but it makes a world of difference to me.
Wow, I have listen to Seith for a while, this is first time I heard he talk about "Dukkha" in Buddhism. 👍🍀
When the world changes, mgt(authority) fails and leadership(responsibility) is what works.. 💯💯💯
Leaders are built in attitudes. Most managers are stereo type but there Leader managers and these people make the big difference. Well said Seth.

1:38 (I've only given this speech once..) OMG.. this is one of the best public speech I have ever seen. The way that Seth uses presentation slides is MASTERFUL!!! 😮👏
Pinapanuod ko ito dahil may recit ako bukas, leadership vs management 👌🏽😃
I was locked in during this lesson, what a presentation!
Very true, leadership requires managers to be able to step up and take responsibility for setting the direction for the future which inspires people to keep pace of how the world is evolving.
No leaders inspire workers to step up.
This video helps me to understand more the value of true leaders!
Excellent, Transparent Professor.
This is true. Leadership is hard, it stands out, it makes you vulnerable yet bold at the same time. Leadership takes the hit of making things different.
I thank God I'm pursuing a unique path in solving how businesses approach marketing and embracing technology.
Seth is always amazing - thank you for sharing this

A Great video! Thank you, dear teacher!
Excellent talk🙌🏾
One of the best speeches I have ever seen
Leadership and management are distinct concepts, but both play crucial roles in organizational success. Understanding the differences between the two can shed light on how they contribute to making a difference in an organization.
*Leadership*
> Vision and Inspiration:
> Innovation and Change
> Relationships and Influence
> Risk-taking
> Long-term Focus
*Management*
> Planning and Organizing
> Implementation and Control
> Problem-Solving
> Authority and Control
> Short-term Focus
Empathy = the path to customer traction
Leaders finds process, managers find roads …. Loops …compass, strategy, volunteer
Absolutely fantastic 👏👏👏
Loved this thank you!

anyone can share video link for bike video nice presentation.
Leaders take responsibility" love it🍎👌💫
The presentation is so well made. But there is one thing that got me so curious. Why is the map of Bulgaria on 37:12? Maybe we will never know :do be:
Quit in the dip, sure. Question. How do you know it's the dip?
Fabulous presentation.
What an excellent talk! Learnt a lot! ❤❤❤
Brilliant, nay supremely inspiring...
The problem with common sense is that it isn't common. Damn painful to have it because you then have to deal with those who never learned to think.
A leader understands one and only one thing: You cannot motivate people, people are self-motivating. Inspiring, coaching yes. Leaders inspire, and manager instruct
Not true. People are different and respond to various stimula. There is not one ‘solution’ for all people. A good leader will adjust his behaviour and strategy according to the requirements of the situation, which of course will change dynamically depending of the market etc. Your statement is reductionist and borderline comical.
@@Mr.Monta77 u reply is childish, arrogant and does not deserve and engagement. Ever thought why there are leadership styles?
@@nkgudih your comment truly is reductionistic. It's a one dimensional solution for a multidimensional problem which never works.
Yes, people do motivate themselfes primarly but you can also motivate them externaly even on short and long term.
Some people need instruction, some people need inspiration…
when people try to give advice especially people that work in management they are nasty about it and come off as a smart Alec people would be more open to advise and learning if it was done with respect which it rarely is
Just love this.
Nice Comparion Vedio. Thanks.
Great speech! Thank you!
Great presentation.
Great video!
Omg! I love this speech!
Great Video 🌅🌅
Sometimes I seriously gets surprised, we as a leaders or managers or learned personal aren't we know these things already? its the intent and courage which lacks within ourselves. We know so many good things but hesitant or sometimes unaware when and where it is to be used.
Think yourself once are we really unaware about such expectations. How much have we implemented after moving out of this seminar?
My comment is not against Godin , he is absolutely a true guide.
i have learn something now between leadership and managemnet
What it comes down to at the end is problem solving (skills)...
Creative Skills.

This more than class lecture 🙌🏿
this man is really great ....he helps me with my leadership skills

Why leader turn manager struggle...,🎯
I am glad I stopped to watch this video, it was refreshing and a great inspiration for change
a leader needs to bee good at management as a manager need to be a good leader. leadership = shortgame of change, management =longame of sustaineability..
19:22 A great thing to learn.
A lot of good information and details about leadership but also a lot of confusion between leader and manager positions. Leadership is a skill not a position so mixed all the 3 makes sense to knowledgeable people but is confusing a lot of people just entering the workforce. This will put a lot of pressure on them as the presentation is going back and forward between the 2 and exploring a lot of qualities that will take time to grasp and learn. The Icarus story is totally taken out of the real legend to make his point but he forgets to mention that his dad (Daedalus) did get out of the labyrinth by following his own advice.
Awesome video! Very inspiring!
Thank you so much for sharing great content!
my teachers made me watch this for free 2 points
Good teachers u have.
Be sure you thank them.
Your teacher is an amazing person 👍
I’m sure you gained more than only 2 points from this knowledge 😉

the truth in this makes me wanna cry. i felt being wrong all loong
I learned a few things from this video I found interesting. Managers find the roads and leaders find the process. There truly is a difference between managers and leaders. Leaders look beyond the problem, issue, or task at hand and see how they can use this opportunity to better benefit the entire company.
Lean means willing to be wrong because even when your wrong, you can embrace the learning.
lean is basically a framework (or process) that puts forward a simple theory: you cannot plan for the future. Instead the onus should be on building hypotheses and going out and testing those - in order to capture the learning loops which will enable you to make the right decisions.
its so simple, but people get lost in the fluff of what we have today. Be careful what you read and expose yourself to!
i wish he was my teacher/mentor better than all of my university professors.
Why the easter island photo on 3:51?
I assume cause this civilisation declined as they continued the same practice of manifesting these giant sculptures deforesting their island until their land was no longer cultivatable.
Don't quit in the dip. I hear you clearly there
Leadership is just about pushing the boundaries (and sometimes breaking the rules) and assertion (but not necessarily responsibility). There is nothing more.
Excellent speech though.
"It's said Heisenberg was there, but it's not certain" really got me! lol
he should have added "Pauli was excluded"
Yeah, and nobody seemed to get the joke haha
Lovely, I missed it :D
O mundo seria melhor sem vencedores.
Brilliant
What to do when the co worker/colleagues are not willing to learn and a team manager supports them from not taking the responsibility by the colleagues, what will be the next step to do as a leader and as a future manager. How to handle the situation. Either to keep quiet and watch the situation or how to proceed with
Good question
An amazing lecture.👍
Naabot ko diri kay ana among instructor HAHAHAHA

It's very interest in the topic but I have to learn toefl. Next time I'll go back to continue this video.
A vida não deveria ser uma competição. Treinar para vencer significa treinar para deixar os outros para trás.
