Seth Godin - Leadership vs. Management - What it means to make a difference

  • The world-renowned marketing and leadership author Seth Godin talks about the difference between leadership and management, the confusion surrounding them, and why the world needs more leaders.
    Key Points:
    • Management works well in terms of increasing economic efficiency and productivity. But, in the face of rapid change, the world needs leadership to get through this stage of unprecedented transformation.
    • You should strive for excellence. Producing something truly great is the only way to build competitive advantage because sophisticated robots, artificial intelligence, and low-paid labor will handle the trivial job of assuring quality.
    • You should focus on “soft skills” which are actually “real skills”. Those are the characteristics that differentiate a potential employee from a robot.
    • Effective leadership can help companies navigate difficulties and failures, and eventually find successful processes to get forward.
    Questions to consider:
    • How can you become more of a leader than a manager?
    • How can you and your organization strive for excellence instead of just quality?
    • Are you focusing on real skills?
    • How can you make better processes in order to fail more efficiently?
    You can also find a written summary of the keynote at www.nbforum.com/event-summaries/

    *Write your own story.
    *Quitting is for winners not losers but you should know when to quit.

    Seth breaks this down to a simple understanding. Leaders definitely need training because leadership is a skill. The advertising industry showed me for years there was a huge difference between a leader and a boss. I learned so much from creative leaders who wanted nothing more but to share their knowledge with me for preparation of higher opportunities. When you're invested in the growth of employees there's no time left in the day for micromanaging. ~ Tim

    • @anthonymonge7815
      @anthonymonge7815 2 роки тому +6

      I agree. I was fortunate to have some of the best Navy Chiefs train me in leadership when I was an officer. Once you have a good handle on leadership, your people feel they want to follow you not because they have to but because they want to. As a leader, you provide them with all the tools they need and provide cover for issues that arise. If they did something great, it was because of their effort. If things went south, it was because I failed. Give them room to grow and the desire to succeed and they will do great things.

    • @adsbypopcorntrailer
      @adsbypopcorntrailer 2 роки тому

      @@anthonymonge7815 Indeed. I would also add that being a leader is sensationalized more today. It sounds cool. Unfortunately, the hype creates a cloudy definition. Some of the misinterpretation could be the effects from the "be your own boss" movement.
      Here's the issue. A percentage of people today that are blessed to be their own boss don't have employees to lead due to advanced technology. Most people use the term boss because of ownership - and mistakenly use leadership in the same context. However, it's not the same agreement. Leadership requires a third party to influence. ~Tim

    A lot of good information and details about leadership but also a lot of confusion between leader and manager positions. Leadership is a skill not a position so mixed all the 3 makes sense to knowledgeable people but is confusing a lot of people just entering the workforce. This will put a lot of pressure on them as the presentation is going back and forward between the 2 and exploring a lot of qualities that will take time to grasp and learn. The Icarus story is totally taken out of the real legend to make his point but he forgets to mention that his dad (Daedalus) did get out of the labyrinth by following his own advice.

    I learned a few things from this video I found interesting. Managers find the roads and leaders find the process. There truly is a difference between managers and leaders. Leaders look beyond the problem, issue, or task at hand and see how they can use this opportunity to better benefit the entire company.
    Lean means willing to be wrong because even when your wrong, you can embrace the learning.

    • @user-jp7ni5xv1r
      @user-jp7ni5xv1r Рік тому

      lean is basically a framework (or process) that puts forward a simple theory: you cannot plan for the future. Instead the onus should be on building hypotheses and going out and testing those - in order to capture the learning loops which will enable you to make the right decisions.
      its so simple, but people get lost in the fluff of what we have today. Be careful what you read and expose yourself to!
