    Such attention to detail...I love it! Maybe you could have hired it out, but in our experiences with building, craftsmanship has been thrown out the window for cheap and fast. We would like to restore our cabinets to enhance the value of our house before we sell and move to our farm, but man, it's so much work. Again, great job Neil. 👍

      I agree that there seems to be less pride in craftsmanship these days when you hire something done. Thanks so much for following along!

    Looks great and what a coincidence! I finished a similar project about 3 hours ago! My sister got divorced and is moving in with me in 2 or 3 days. I have an area upstairs with a large bedroom, a bathroom and a loft area. About 3 weeks ago we started painting the ceilings and were just going to "spruce" it up. When we were done with the ceilings were done, we just couldn't live with ANYTHING up there. The carpet came out, vanity and cabinets in the bathroom and we started from the subfloor. Everything is painted and we installed about 800 feet of Lifeproof vinyl flooring new cabinets, vanity and toilet. Like I said. I shot the last nail in the base shoe and caulked a few hours ago. It's done! The bad thing is that I liked the floor we picked out so much that I bought enough to do the entire main level too. So as relieved as I was today to be able to get her in and settled, I have almost 2000 feet of flooring to rip out and replace. Carpet, wood and ceramic tile. We'll see if I can do this part in 3 weeks! What's your next project? :o)

    • @digdrivediy
      @digdrivediy  2 роки тому +1

      Congratulations on getting through the first part! It's hard to know where to stop when doing this stuff so I don't blame you for wanting to tackle more while you're in there. Best of luck with the rest of your floors!
      Our next project is in the works. It's gonna be an outdoor project that will be a little "dirty". Still getting the details ironed out but stay tuned.

    Neil… that is beautiful… tell Kara she has excellent taste. (Don’t take it from me… Nana gave her approval!)
    Our kitchen make over is complete too. We hired it done for the most part. I stripped the tile backsplash, rewired the walls, repaired the mouse holes, rerouted the drains and plumbed the new supply and drains & touched up the wall paint.
    Our old disposal had always dripped. I couldn’t stop it no matter what I tried. After dismantling it I found that the female drain pipe flange that was molded into it was warped. It had to have been that way from the Kenmore factory. There was no way to seat the male drain pipe to it without a leak… we weren’t able to use it. So, we replaced it. Although I regret having to spend the money, we found a ‘Quiet’ model. It is nice to turn it on and hear a WHIRRR, instead of a wood chipper chopping rocky root balls!
    Nana chose the same faucet as Kara. She loves hers. We also installed a small fountain spigot. The full sized one is plumbed to the softened side of the supply. The fountain spigot gives her access to our sweet unprocessed, spring fed well water. She now feels as if she has the best of both worlds… spotless cleaning from one and tasty spring water from the other!
    Cost??? Well sir, ours was a bit more expensive than yours. Maybe? Perhaps? At this point who cares. She has a better kitchen than she thought she could afford. I got to do the parts of the job that I enjoy… and a 50 year old rodent infested eyesore is no longer a part of our daily life.
    I’ll call that a ‘Win/Win’ every single day! The cost was worth every inch of the journey… from picking out the colors of the materials to putting the last spice in the rack!!!

    • @digdrivediy
      @digdrivediy  2 роки тому +2

      Boy, you said it. It was certainly worth every penny just to solve the rodent issue but seeing Momma happy like this is priceless.
      Glad to hear your remodel was a success as well. Your description of your old garbage disposal is exactly how ours sounds! You don't want to run it if anyone is asleep anywhere in the house 😋
      I hope you continue to get as much enjoyment from your new kitchen as we plan to from ours. Our next project involves some digging and landscaping, so I'll be a bit more in my element 😉

    So true Neil, it was well worth it. My father-in-law and I are just finishing a partial (still huge) remodel of a rental I'm about to put on the market and he said why don't you hire people and sell more real estate instead. Well, maybe I could sell more real estate, but I get emotionally attached to my houses as much as my tractors, so it's hard to not have that connection to the house. I do believe in doing a job and having it done right and I think I'd have just as much stress running down contractors these days, so I think my time is better spent dealing with some things myself. Yesterday, when I left after finishing the kitchen and front door, I felt immense satisfaction for the past 3 months of work. As far as using good quality older cabinets, good for you guys. In real estate, I see so often people put in new "garbage" after throwing out the old "high quality" stuff, what a shame. Could you have gotten new for cheap or similar, maybe, but you wouldn't likely get high cabinets for your efforts. On the kitchen front. We just finished the kitchen yesterday on my rental, a full top to bottom. Much smaller size, but nonetheless finally done. I do remember doing my own kitchen in the house I live in now back in 2009. What a mess not having a sink is. Too many times, I forgot we didn't have the drain hooked up and I would dump something down the sink...oops! I enjoy your videos, the kitchen looks great. You did the same thing we did, we replaced a very similar kitchen look with a very similar higher quality look. What I mean is, the your new kitchen looks very similar to the old kitchen, but with beefed up quality hints and material usage. It looks fantastic.

Another point that I think gets forgotten about DIY jobs like this is the growth of certain skills that are now ready to be applied elsewhere. VARY NICE! This is a VARY BIG improvement from what you had!! The lights are a must and it is something that seems to get left out for some reason in many kitchens! I have a hobby of looking at houses and land on Zillow. It is amazing to me how badly planed Kitchens are no matter the cost of the house! Most Kitchens seem to be in the available space rather than planning the house around the kitchen as I would do. Also neglected is that bringing in the groceries is the number one job going in and out of the house! Architects must not study kitchen work flow or the difference between one person working and having additional work stations that do not interfere with others when kids or others come in to help. The girls seem to have space to help in your kitchen.
    A trend I do not like is gray interior paint! To me whole houses have been destroyed because in some instances just painting the gray something else like a proper off white will not fix the whole color decor problem! Gray is NOT a neutral color in my opinion!! It is a depressing color and absorbs light.

    That is one beutiful kitchen remodeling. I am so impressed with the quality of finishing and attention to detail. I have had contractors on kitchen installs for my clients that could learn from the work you have done and I totally agree that completing the work and taking in the effort you put in to achieve such a really fabulous kitchen is what matters. We'll done. Stay safe J.

    If the joint compound pops out, you should get Minwax wood filler( which is a polyester and hardener product kind of like bondo wood filler, but smaller and less expensive) and the repaint the part that the joint compound fellout. You might be ok since it appears that the doors and drawers are soft close. and it is covered by paint. I bought the minwax wood filler to patch some of out hollow doors, where it has chirped. Good Job, and I'm sure you saved money.

    Sweet job my brother! I could swear I saw Kara glowing at one point. Smoothies and French toast???? Where's the Van Camps, canned, Corn beef Hash and fried SPAM strips????? Ah Hell, it's all good. However, you start in with the avocado toast, we are gonna have words Jefe...Love home Neil and kiss the girls.

      Thanks Greg! I've found if someone else is cooking it for me, it's in my best interest to not complain :). Fortunately she's still loving the new kitchen too!

    Awesome kitchen looks great I couldn’t agree more sometimes doing it yourself just feels good and it usually means buying a new tool always a good thing. The last few minutes of this video made me very hungry.
