  • We developed a leak in the house from the chimney and we assess the problem and try to fix the leak by sealing our brick chimney and installing a new chimney cap on top of the flue liner.

Neil, It is very cheap and has worked for me the last 8 years without any problems whatsoever on product quality, and that is 6' x 20' rolls of black mesh plastic gutter guard. I have not had to climb any ladder and clean out gutters since I installed this. It stays put, too. The ONLY time I have had to reinstall is when one piece came out during an 60+ MPH wind. It fits tight under the shingle and the lip of the gutter with a slight bulge in the mesh. That's what keeps it tight and in place. These fancy leaf gutter guard systems you see advertised on TV is a waste of money, IMO.
The truck made your work a lot easier and safer for that job. Glad you had it.

    • @digdrivediy
      @digdrivediy  2 роки тому

Hey I like that idea of the plastic mesh. I do want to do something affordable. Those leaf guard places are crazy expensive!
I'm gonna check into that stuff. I guess I'll need to borrow the bucket truck again! I think I'll wait until the ground is frozen this time:)

Man it’s great to have connections…. With cool toys! That bucket truck is the perfect answer for getting to your chimney cap. Hopefully you won’t need to get up there again soon.
There’s a castle siege scene in one of those old black and white comedies. Wherein, the marauders are rolling a massive catapult across a sewage swamp to get to the castle.
The guys have four timbers. Two for the front wheels and two for the rear. They roll the wheels about a foot forward from one timber to the next. Then they position the ox team and pull out the timber from behind the front wheels. They then move the ox team to the other side of the catapult and pull the timber into place in front of the wheels. Next they drive the ox team back around the catapult and do the rear wheels the same way. The ox team then goes to the front and inches the catapult forward again. All this time they are slogging in knee deep sewage.
They put the procession into fast motion. In the background, the sun rises and sets several times as the catapult inches forward.
Finally they get it in place in front of the castle. Then they realize, the cart with all of their boulders is still on the other side of the sewer swamp.
As they are inching it across, a competing throng of marauders go around the swamp, just a few feet away from them, with their catapult and ammo cart.
The leader of the first group watches helplessly as the second group begins their assault on the castle. He then calls for his engineer. The engineer pulls out his map and starts explaining how the competition is in the wrong place. The walls there are too thick… they’ll never breach… the competitor’s stone hits the wall and it tumbles into rubble.
The leader says let me see that map. As he holds it up facing the castle he notices that he can’t read the lettering. So, he turns it over… and it shows perfectly that the competition is where they should have been all along… To the right of the sewage swamp.
The next scene is of the engineer being loaded into the catapult.
That’s what I was thinking as you and Kara moved that truck across your yard! Fortunately, you had her and not some misguided engineer to keep you on the right track!
Thanks Neil, I thoroughly enjoyed the video.

The connections to my farmer friends and relatives has been paramount to us living out here! The same crew that owns the bucket truck is who we bought this property from in the first place! So, I have never taken that connection for granted.
I chuckled at the marauders story. I didn't think I'd be typing that word today 😂
Half way through I was questioning my decision but was far enough along I wasn't going to give up. Itay have been overkill, but there are no ruts. Around here if you rut up the yard you live with it until you fill it in with more dirt! It was good exercise nevertheless. I say that when I think something was probably pointless otherwise. 🤔
Thanks for checking it out today. I almost didn't make this one!

I rented a house once that was a nightmare for many things including a leaking chimney. (desparate times *sigh*) The mortar joints in the brickwork leaked just as much as the water coming straight down the flue (no cap). I had to place buckets inside the fireplace to contain the water when it rained.

  • @robsmith7681

If you have a leak coming from inside the flue, maybe you could look into one of the mortar products that actually line the entire inside of the flue. I’m having it done to mine. Some of the products have a 20 year warranty too. A chimney cap is one of the most Important upgrades you can do to your system. I actually built my own cap so it covered the entire crown as well to protect all that up there. My chimney is from 1964, so protecting it is key.

Hi Neil the goose neck is bendy bit at the top of the rain water pipe that channels water from the gutter to ground , if the Rain Water pipe is blocked or partially blocked and the joints aren’t sealed it will allow water to run on the outside of the pipe ?
It just appeared to me that the RWP and “wall” it is fastened to looked wet before you painted sealer on the chimney anyway I think if it had been me I would have tested that RWP with a bucket of water or running a hose down it to check for leaks ! I hope this helps mate !

So much so that the, "Father of the Bride," was involved. When "Daddy" shows up, you know your butt is on thin ice. Pick out your favorite decorative Mason jar, and give it to Kara. She's gonna be storing the "jewels" on her nightstand son. I hope you cleaned each individual bristle on that brush as well! BTW, you came all the way to Oregon and didn't call???
