Thank you so much for the video! My daughter took her 2020 Rav4 (w/41K miles) to the dealership where she bought it and they gave her a written quote of $1,521.72. We're tuned in to the class action lawsuit that was just filed. We're a Toyota family but this widespread part failure needs immediate attention by Toyota.
Wow, that's a lot. Normally, parts and labor, depending on the dealer rate, should be around 500
Is it still safe to drive the vehicle when you see this light come on?
@@TheYotaChannel Her next door neighbor is the finance manager for the local Porsche dealership. He use to be the FM for that Toyota dealership. When he learned the quote, he called the dealership and magically the quote dropped to $790.
Been searching for a detailed video on this for months. Thank you for making this video available. You just saved hundreds of people $500 in repairs.
This video couldn't be more comprehensive best video of the year award. Thanks, I'm doing my 2019 Rav4 tomorrow.
Thank you!
I’ve got a 2020 RAV4 TRD OffRoad and Toyota says $827 to fix it! Nah. Got the part for $70 and thanks to your video, this girl will be repairing this herself. Your video is amazing! Thank you SO much!
Awesome! feel free to comment if you need help.
Excellent video--Thanks for doing this. It is the most complete coolant bypass valve replacement video for the 5th generation RAV4 on UA-cam. Other guys have done some for the 8th gen Camry. This is actually the ONLY one showing the entire job for the 2019-2024 RAV.
Thank you, i really appreciate that.
I just paid the dealer $600 to fix mine. It's so funny only thing I showed him was the Engine Maintenance required message and he said oh yes you need to have the bypass changed like without even putting my Rav4 on the scanner. He said it's a common problem word out of his mouth. We all need to file a complaint!
Yea, it's common. I hope Toyota extends the warranty on them or offer some type of reimbursement with the amount we are replacing.
@@TheYotaChannel Agreed 👍👍
A class action lawsuit has been filed in California
@@circleforalanding Oh good Im going to see how to file one in Florida.
Thanks you so much for providing this excellent how-to video! Gonna break-out the Snap-On tools and repair my daughter's 2020 RAV4 with 41K miles. Come on, Toyota...stand up for your loyal customers and stand behind a free repair for this obvious design flaw.
Thank you so much for the super thanks. Im sure if you call Toyota customer support and explain your situation, you can get reimbursed for the part and possibly get parts and labor covered.
@@TheYotaChannel Will do. Thanks for the advice.
seems to me we rav 4 owners need to file a class action lawsuit to get toyota to recall this. Asking 800$ from almost every single owner is ridiculous
Having the same issue at 70kmiles talking about charging me 900$
For sure. Trusted Toyota reliability, however, this problem is very common and the manufacturer hasn't recalled it. Disappointed. Won't buy another Toyota.
@@henrytnh1 yes I took it to the dealership and they wanted to charge me 980$. I was gonna get it fixed by them, but fortunately for me they didn't have the part. I knew of someone else that could fix the 125$ part for much less
I paid $900.00 😢
A proposed class action lawsuit came up on June 4. I just came back from the dealer who’s charging me $1000. I rather do it myself. This video gave me the confidence
Great video, had searched several videos to determine what the problem was. Your video identified the issue. Took it to Toyota dealership for repair, $99.00 for diagnostic to verify the issue. They wanted $763.00 to make the repair. I would still owe them $348.55 after what my extended warranty covered. I paid their diagnostic fee and took it to another repair shop. It will cost me $93.98 + another $50.00 diagnostic fee after the warranty pays their part. Thanks for the diagnosting describing the problem.
Your extended warranty covered this? Cause I’m at 73637 and I want to know if my extended warranty covers this
Great video! I never do my own maintenance but I tried taking it to the dealership and they just said it was the oil change light 🤦♂️. Since they didn't want my money I was able to do it myself with this detailed video.
I have not been getting any warning lights yet on my 2020 Rav4 but thanks for the video. Now I know that I can do this on my own.
Great Video you do an excellent job on detail Thanks so much
Good video- I like how you present the detail with some good tips like how to ensure you get all the air out when refilling coolant. Hardest part of the job seems to be the wait for the part- dealer says ma6 be two months!
Thanks for the detailed video. Followed to the T with no issues on the replacement.
Nice!
Thank you. You saved my mother in law 1k on her 2020rav with only 18kmi. Even though the car had no codes just the message and was loosing coolant. I went ahead and changed the hose.(out of stock at a lot of dealers). Code was gone, fixed! Only thing different I did was remove the battery and tray after draining the radiator to work from above. Thanks again. Keep making content. Subscribed
Nice! A lot of guys in the shop remove the battery tray as well. Thanks for the sub!

I got a 2020 rav4, same error popped up. Local dealer says its a $1200 fix. I just bought the part for $200. Gonna switch it out today. Thank you for the video man! Lifesaver.
Wow, 1200 is way too much. 😬 600 max, depending on the dealer labor rate.
@@TheYotaChannel well I finally finished the job so far so good. The light is gone. It took me longer then expected, the hose clamps were in a tough spot and im a chunky dude.
I just want to tell you thank you so much for your video. It helped me out so much. I did also bleed the system from air using the no spill funnel. I kept opening up your video back and forth during the repair to make sure im doing it right.
Thank you for saving me $1000 at the dealership
@@tthanhtamae86 That is awesome! yea, that hose clamp near the cylinder head can be a challenge. I'm glad you was able to save some money.
How do you search the part? And where did you find it?
I just fixed it ! Your video was very helpful , I REALLY appreciate it .
Nice man!
Awesome video. Could you provide the part numbers
Hi there ! I have the same problem , I’m from Saudi Arabia , just bought the part from Toyota but I won’t let the dealer do it . There are overpriced ! Thank you very much.
Best video on here for this problem.
Thank you.
Great video! Thanks for the help with this issue.
Thank you for making the video.
Thanks for the great video!
Amazing video... I will get the parts and do it this weekend.. your video is just perfect
Thank you. If you need help, feel free to comment.
@@TheYotaChannel perfect.. thank you so much... i just get the part from amazon for $45 ... im pretty sure at the dealership will be at least $400 . Keep up with the nice work and nice videos🙏🙏👌
Thanks bro , good video , just sub.
Damn Toyota can’t even trust them anymore.. 30k miles and it’s giving me the same notification
Can you replace the pins too? If they broken how to get new pins?
I understand the bleeding process is to run the engine over 1200 rpm for a period of time and move the heater controls in a certain position. The car care nut has a video on this. Any other procedure will not bleed the system properly and cause other problems.
Would you please advise the exact parts and/or parts number? Appreciate your helpful video.
This seems like it should be a recall that should be fixed for no charge, I probably have the same problem since it just started a week ago and most likely the culprit, I have a third party warranty so let’s see what they actually cover or maybe I will complain to Toyota corporate
Where did you get the part from?
Dealer or online?
Does the valve fail open or closed??
I think I can use glue for the leaking?
Great video, what is the part number for this coolant bypass valve?
Anyone know the part number?
How did you take that sensor off I’m having so much trouble
Just finished replacing bypass hose... the most difficult part for me was dropping tool inside the engine bay and getting access to the 2 ten mm screw holding the bracket on LOL
Nice man! Yea, the 2 10mm bolts can be a little tricky because there's not much room, and you need steady hands. To be able to do this job at home with a jack and jack stands is impressive.
Thank you very much.
You're welcome.
I have a 2023 Rav Prime. I am assuming this is the same part in my car as well? My daughter's is going to be repaired by my husband, and there is so much more room in her Rav 4 XLE 2020 model....
Yea, the Rav 4 prime engine room is tight because of the extra ac lines needed for the big hybrid battery in the back.
Hello thanks for the video, do you have all the part numbers needed for the job?
16260-F0010, just double check that it fits your car.
@shaunnal2560 There are two coolant by-pass valves on the 2019-2024Rav4, the video is showing replacement of part 16260-F0010.
@shaunnal2560 The first coolant bypass valve is the value with gray colored clip and is likely the issue causing engine maint required on dash. The right valve (w teal clip) is just a right angled hose connector, not a bypass valve. The second coolant bypass valve is underneath the battery.
@shaunnal2560 correct
Have the same issue with my RAV4 2019, should I take to dealer or any other shop can do it? Around how much will cost it? Thank you.
Hello, any other shop can do it. I do recommend getting the part from Toyota. A job like this, you can expect to pay around 500 for parts and labor
@@TheYotaChannel Hello, thank you so much! Is it safe to drive for now? Is it dangerous? 😢
@@maylingzheng4238 it's safe to drive 👍🏾
@@TheYotaChannelThank you so much 👍
hello, I had the same issue on my toyota camry 2020. problem diagnose by dealer but dealar was expensive they quote around 1000
usd.i bought the part from the dealer and replace it outside but the light is not go away even after replacing. Any suggestion what to do now.the car runs fine no issue.I did disconnect the bettery even delete the code with the code reader but its not go away.
Double check to make sure you plugged the connector in. Or go to autozone and see if they scan and clear the codes for you with their scanner.
Disconnecting the battery should've done the trick. Try disconnecting 10 min or longer.
Mine is turn off by itself, do I need to worry about it?
Great video. Thanks for taking the time to put this together. Just one question if you don't mind...Why can't you just replace the actuator instead of replacing the entire hose assembly? Doesn't the actuator just pry off?
I wouldn't recommend prying it off. On the Rav 4, the new valve comes with the hose attached already. The Camry and Corolla the valve comes separate from the hose. Prying the hose off the Rav4 and reinstalling the old hose, you run the risk of the hose coming off when the vehicle is hot and the cooling system under pressure.
My rav4 not even 40k mile already had this problem
4/16/2024 New Mexico Toyota Dealer has said my Corolla (2019) needs radiator hoses and coolant system repair replaced to a total of $1,678.53 !!! 😮
That's a lot. Did you bring it in because of the engine maintenance required message?
Rav4 2019 Le AWD
I had this message starting to show up when I turn the A/C on last few weeks
With a ticking sound coming from the engine bay that goes away after I turn off the A/C
No check engine light not a single sign on the dashboard
Only this annoying warning
Yea, it sounds like the bypass valve you see in this video is going bad.
How do you get rid of code after replacement?
After replacement, I've seen the code clear on its own, and the message will go away as well. Or you can disconnect the battery after replacement, and that should clear the code.
Hey my 2019 is having this same issue is it safe to drive until I can get it into the shop to get fixed?
Yes, it's safe to drive. It's not a concern that you have to rush to get fixed asap, but you can buy yourself some time until you have the funds
Your ac may not work until fixed though having problems with mines at 62,000 miles. Thought it was time for oil change and dealership didn’t recognize it either
@@hermanpeters549 😂😂😂 how did the dealership not recognize it? It's a common problem
@@TheYotaChannel they didn’t
do you need to reset the code after part is replaced or message clear by itself?
In some cases, it does clear by itself. If it doesn't, you can disconnect and reconnect battery
@@TheYotaChannel Thanks, I haven't replaced the part yet but planning to do it with a local mechanic for cheaper price. I am still not sure if the message "Engine maintenance required" is due to coolant valve. so I took it to Autozone and the small scanner didn't show any error code. is there a specific tool to find out if it actually due to coolant valve? or do I need to take to dealer to diagnosis that for me?
Some just replace the sensor, why do they make you replace the hoses? Can you just get the sensor?
On the Corolla's, you can get the bypass valve without the hose. On the Rav 4, you can only get the bypass with the hose
I just got bypass sensor delivery from Amazon for my RAV4 , do I still need the hoses as well.?
if you use a HOSE CLAMP you won't lose much coolant. no reason to make a mess like that.
Oh brother, i got the message right now while im in the middle of my 4000km road trip, should i be concerned car might overheat and stop?
No, you will be fine. You can fix it after the road trip. To simply put, the bypass valve you see in the video is to help the engine warm up quicker, it WILL NOT cause it to overheat.
@Jrdagreat perfect..that's good news. What a relief. Thanks man really appreciate it. 😊
Just got same message today. Mine is 2019 Rav4 with 135,000kms. Is it recommended to not drive the car till we replace this? Could this cause engine overheating? Thanks for helping
Hello, no, it will not cause it to overheat. I've seen customers wait a few weeks or so before deciding to replace.
@TheYotaChannel thanks dear. I was bit panicked. Did you buy this hose from Toyota
@atifkm09 yes i recommend getting it from Toyota so they can order the part according to your VIN
@@TheYotaChannel Just managed to replace the hose and valve assembly today. Your instructions were super clear. Excellent video. I just removed the battery as well in order for my chubby hands to work much easier :)
How urgently does this need to be fixed? Can it wait until winter is closer?
It's not urgent, it can wait. The purpose of the valve is to help the engine get to operating temp as quickly as possible.
@@TheYotaChannelso does it affect the overheating of the engine or the transmission if I don’t change the valve? I live in a very hot country I noticed the rpm takes longer to go down to 1000 than other cars
What part is being replaced here I have the same problem
Hey, it's called the engine coolant bypass valve
My 2019 Toyota Rav4, maintenance required, diagnostic was done, error discovered coolant bypass valve. Toyota dealer Sunnyvale sent me estimate to replace it. $994, tax 19.25, diagnostic charges $260 very unfortunate
Wow! 994 is high for this repair.
2020 rav xle. 15000miles only. Regularly oil changed with synthetic.
Glendale toyota dealer charge me $352 for just check up.
Same thing happened to me at 37.4k miles similar to yours lol
That's right around the mileage you can expect to see this concern.
Mine is only 15000 miles. 2020 rav4 xle
Do you know the replace part number? Great video btw!!
Toyota part number #16260-F0010 (complete with pressed on hoses) cost me $125 total from Toyota dealer. I am going to replace today.
@@dennislis4207 ok thanks I paid 88$ from Toyota it was on sale replaced it everything seems good no more engine required maintenance message only needed one 4qt bottle of coolant
That should not fail like that, appears to be a issue for these years.
I agree. It's a common problem. Hopefully, Toyota will issue an updated part that will no longer exhibit the problem.
What code came up? P0128?
At .34 seconds into the video, i showed the code stored. P0128 sounds like a coolant temperature issue
@@TheYotaChannel Not true! It shows P268111 and P268115.

My RAV4 displaying the same message.
My 2020 Rav 4 has this problem and they quoted me 1500 bucks to fix it. Come on Toyota!! I'm gonna give it the old college try to change it myself!
1500 is too much.
June of 2024...A class action lawsuit has been filed in California. Suggest retaining all parts receipts and/or dealership/auto garage repair bills. C'mon Toyota. Get this settlement done and support your loyal customers.
If you call Toyota customer support and tickle their ears a little and let them know how much you and your family love Toyota, and its a shame this is happening to your new Rav 4. You have a great chance of getting it covered at your local Toyota dealer.
@@TheYotaChannel will do. Thanks for the advice.
Seems like everyone is getting the same alert at the same time!
You did not explain how to remove the electrical connection @ :53?? How about explaining this.
O.K. I went to another video and here is the explanation. I had used a mirror to locate the tab
towards the windshield side of the connector about halfway down and in the middle. I had to press
only in the middle of the connector, not the whole back side and was able to pull up. You will see in the mirror why you only push in the middle. Hopefully, this guy will learn to do a better job in the future
I cany take the electrical connector off for sh!@
hahahahaha ... I can't either. But from what I'm hearing if you have time to sit for a minute to allow your car time to warm up it doesn't matter if you replace the valve or not. The valve won't cause your vehicle to overheat from what the author of this video says soooo.
@@randyhill3964 I cannot take off the electrical connector either. Can someone, please explain since the author fail to address this?
Worried about not making a mess with the refill yet you drop 2 gallons of fluid over the guy's plastic and axles and floor... geez. Half-ass job.
