- Learn how to quickly and easily change oil on a 2019-2022+ Toyota RAV4! Toyotas are built to last so be sure to give your RAV the best so that it can last 300K+ miles! Do it yourself so you know it is done right!
Thank you for making this. My father passed when I was young, so I don't really have anyone to ask about stuff like this.
You can contact me anytime you want to do so, or have some question about car engine ?
My dad was a mechanic for a good portion of his life, built his own muscle cars, etc etc. I wish he took half as good of care of the cars he handed down to me than you do. Father of the year and a responsible car owner for sure. Great video, great general advice! This is a gold standard DIY oil change video and I've done more than my share of my own oil changes. I came here just to get more of an idea of what the Rav4 looks like under the hood, I really enjoyed watching this.
This is by far the best oil change video i have seen on utube.WAS in VA
Thank you very much! I love maintaining stuff. ;).
You're so right, this is the best oil change video I seen ever.
Very well done, I like your easy going style. It is obvious you care about taking care of what you own, and doing the job right. Your pride in that is obvious and I like to see it. I know your daughters will be taught to do the same.
Thanks for posting this! I used to change my oil on previous cars...until... I drove over my ramps 1 too many times. That gets old quick. I decided paying someone to do it was worth the money. But since I got the RAV4, which doesn't need ramps, I figured it's time to save some $. Thanks again!
This is a great DIY video. I have a brand new 2025 Rav4 that has 2 years free oil changes from the dealership. Being a DIY er I am going to do the oil changes myself even though they are free from the dealer because of the reasons you mentioned in your video. Many of the techs are pressured to complete so many oil changes in a day, quality may suffer. Also, in my area it is possible to wait 2 or 3 hours if the dealers are busy.
just a quick tip when removing the access panel to get to the oil filter and drain plug you only need to remove three of the four screws and leave the back one on and you can easy swing the panel counter clock wise making it easier to put back in place when your done
Great point but wouldn't that cause the panel to bend slightly at the point where the last screw is still in place, given all the weight is being supported at that point? Just curious.
2015 Tundra and 2023 RAV4 in my fleet. Also have a Honda but was a Ford fanboy most of my life. Owning fords, I was always under the impression that all vehicles have lots of issues. My tundra taught me that Toyota is worth the extra $ and the reliability and quality is real.
Just bought my wife a 2024 Rav4 Hybrid 2 days ago. Plan on keeping a long time. Thanks for the outstanding video. Will change oil daily as a precaution.
Change the oil at 500 miles to take little parts of metal out , empty oil, and run 1qt to clean up, then keep doing the rest , repeat the same at 1000 miles, after every 4k to 5k miles. Simple program for a nice car care. I have a 2024 rav4 I love it.
@1967KID Will do exactly that, most people don't believe this, but I'm 61, have always done this and never had engine failure
Yes thank you very much for the information. People need to learn how to take care of their car's .
Anyone knows if changing oil / filter by yourself 'takes away your warranty '?. Or if you have it done by other oil changers ( with right filter, filter) still gives you the warranty. Dealerships ( second hand imports tie you down to their own dealerships ) will only comply with 'their warranties' provided you go back to them but they charge hundreds...will going to another mechanic void their warranty?
@frank88ster make sure you get the same one that's on . Don't strip nothing i did it, and at 10k I took it to the dealership I had change the oil att 500 miles, 1000 miles, 3000 miles, 6000 miles. And let it to get to 10k dealership did it trust me they was not happy I had change my oils i told them who they F is going to run 10k on 0w-16 it's my car and I want to have it until 600k I'm paying for my rav4 2024 not you , they just never told me nothing the micanic told me you Wright and I told why ya want us to run to 10k it won't even make it to 100k on 10 oil changes.
Well done video for changing oil on the RAV4 from Toyota!
You hit some critical points during the video, oil hand tighten that oil filter plus add fresh oil to the rubber gasket.
Toyota’s dealership with cost of labor and synthetic oil is pretty expensive, however during winter months I use them. I don’t like getting on the cold concrete anymore, not fun. So I wait and plan if possible to get the oil changed during warm months.
For any warranty concerns, I keep a small notebook just for the particular vehicle and if I am doing the oil change I will write down date, mileage, type of oil and any other important information. A dealership will have their own documentation if you’re doing such at that store.
Thus, if you have any engine issue’s and the warranty company has issues, you have your own documentation. Some say save the receipt of the oil, filter etc., as well but I feel that could be overkill, especially if you are showing a history of doing such service in that notebook, however that would be a personal choice.
Again the video was well done and just like I was taught when changing oil on my vehicles for the 50+ years.
Tks for sharing. Toyotas are the best. Just sold a 13 highlander with 360000 miles on it. All it needed was a set of brake pads and a strut. Hopefully this Rav 4 will last that long. Cheers. 🍻
A couple things. This is a good video but here are a couple Tips to add. After getting everything you need ready and before going under the car, loosen the oil filler cap and set it on it's side on the hole to prevent anything from falling into the engine but mostly it allows the oil to drain a little faster and easier.. Like the guy below mentioned, don't put the full recommended amount of oil in in this case 4.8 quarts put in 4 and a 1/3 qrts in put the cap on the filler hole and then try the engine running a bit to check for leaks after turning the engine off. Put the vehicle back to level ground and after 3 or 4 minutes, check the oil level again. and add some until the dipstick shows a level halfway between the two marks on the dipstick. As oil warms up it expands so a little more than halfway between the marks is ideal and too much oil is almost as bad as too little. Also at your next gas fill up and after waiting a few minutes after the engine has been off, check the oil level again and if it's okay, check it every other oil change or every month or so.
You meant to say, 'check it every other gas fillip'..... not every other oil change, correct?
Yup i have been screwing up 30 plus years thanks.
@@HB-yq8gy It's alright, we all screw up from time to time. Some, for longer and more often than others apparently.
While oil does expand it is also being pumped up to the head and runs back down. I don’t think your gonna run into a problem with the oil level being too high.
Dang! I have been doing wrong for decades. Luckily, none of my cars has broken down for changing oil wrong way.
Great video. Love how you emphasize how easy it is to work on Toyotas. Those are some nice tires btw.
Yeah, those tires look awesome.
Great video. I'm as meticulous as you when it comes to vehicle maintenance and cleanliness. Thanks!
Nice video thanks! Might be worth mentioning to initially fill a bit below the recommended quantity. Then wait and check level and fill up the the requested amount. So you don’t overfill when you didn’t drain completely.
Overfilling can damage your engine.
Actually, most must have come out, because when I checked the oil after adding the recommended amount it was just lightly below the top level in the safe zone, perfect place to be. However, if in doubt, as you said, it is always better to underfill, check and bring it up to level than to over fill. In a pinch, you can always let some oil back out if you do over fill the level. Good point to make.
Thanks
I never figured this before and always wondered why the exact amount led me a bit over. Knowing is half the battle as GI Joe used to say. Thank you for your comment.
Yes, apparently these engines are more sensitive than most to overfilling, especially the earlier years with it starting with 2019.
Thanks for the video. Didn't even know about the crush washers didn't see that on any of the other rav4 oil changing videos. Ordered some just in case. Will be using the tip on tightening the bolts too. First time changing the oil myself and you made it look easy.
You are very welcome! Thanks for the positive feedback. You are doing it right by gathering everything that you will need ahead of time as that makes for a successful job and more fun for you as well. It feels good to do it yourself and know that it is done with more care than most shops would take. It is also fun to get to know your car and spot little things before they are big problems. Go for it! Best wishes with the oil change!
Just bought a 21. The way you operate mirrors my approach. This was helpful. Thank you
Just bought a '21 for my 15 year old daughter. First thing I look at is the oil change vids and I was lucky to stumble on this one first. Thank you for listing drain plug size and all necessary numbers. This reminds me of my Xterra so much. Super easy. I actually torque my drain bolts because I have been known to be a little too persuasive because I work on Freightliners lol. Thank you for the great detail and excellent video!
Great video throttle on John! I just did my wife’s 30 K maintenance on her 2019 RAV4 highbred XSE! I am with you two times they overfilled at the dealer..if they can’t get that right how do they do the technical work! I am with you that money goes in my pocket as good as the dealers! You’re doing it right a flat rate mechanic won’t do what you do?? The more they get out the more they make! I try to buy OEM whenever possible I’ve had good luck that way!
Thank you very much! Yes, we can take the time with an oil change and do a few extra things that the dealer doesn't have time to do and/or won't take the time to do, plus since we are taking out time we get it right every time! Can't go wrong with OEM, I stick with OEM filters and oil just like you. Toyota quality always seems to be so good!
@@throttle-onJohn I don’t care I’m doing 5000 mile oil changes really not that hard on this vehicle!! my 2013 had a cartridge filter what a mess no matter what!
Bought a certified used Toyota, had low coolant on the L mark and ~0.90 quarts of overfilled motor oil that I just had to drain out. Good cars, not so good dealership mechanics lol
@@guidedbygreen1480 Always so good to be able to check basic things ourselves. These basic checks do so much for longevity of our cars. Good find, nice work!
@Throttle-On John Toyota do you change oil after five thousand or ten thousand
Changed my share of oil before and maybe it's the camera lighting but by looking at your oil I would be changing in half the time as it appears to be milky
Thank you for taking the time to do this. This was an amazing very clear video and we all appreciate it, sir. I just got a 2020 XL premium and I’ll be changing my oil very soon.
I have 21 RAV4 LE fwd n I went to the Toyota dealership they told me every 10,000 miles to change the oil n thanks for the wonderful video I might check couple of places to check the prices! This is my first Toyota😮
Full synthetic is good for 10k miles.
@@Rubeless i have to for 57,550 for my first oil change in my rav4 so how that goes when it’s time for me to do that
😳@@abbyhunker3956
You did a perfect demo for oil change
Remove the oil filler cap first thing and place it on the hood latch so you know there is no oil in engine just increase a little life’s surprise comes up.
Fill the oil filter up once with new oil the paper element will soak up half of it. Don’t top it off this way you won’t spill any when putting it on the engine this keeps from having a dry start up.
Great video. 👍
please next time put some guards on your back tires for safety. great video i just bought a 2022
You can add a little oil to the filter to aid in priming. The element will absorb it and make the light go out quicker.
Nice video, detailed instructions. Just one minor thing, the N1 filter comes lubricated from the factory, so it's not necessary to lube it.
Car Care Nut Channel says to let the motor run for at least 5 minutes. Then let it set until the oil drains back in the pan before checking the oil. Some 303 protectant would help keep the plastic protected.
due to the extra around the waist i use ramps on my 2021 rav4 LE i have changed it once i got 3 years free oil changes when i purchased it
I have a '97 4Runner that still runs and looks like new. Besides preventative maintenance like LBJ and a timing belt, the only thing that actually went bad was a fuel pump on year 22. I can confirm Toyota's seem to last forever with basic maintenance. I can also confirm that BMW does not. The wallet over thickness light comes on nearly every payday. Anyhow, done with that. Sticking with Toyota products from now on. Hoping our new RAV and Tacoma additions have the same track record as the old 4Runner.
How many miles does your 4runner have?
Thanks for commenting! 4 Runners are amazing machines, they just run and run! Great choice! I hear you on the BMW, great performing machines but need some love now and then, but pretty to look at and perform great!
Thanks for this video! I'm finally going to start doing my own oil changes!!
Great video! U are fortunate u can get under w/o lifting.😂🤣Anyway, I LIKE raising front of any Toyota. Drain plug is on the rear of pan & I feel "tipping" engine towards back drains ALL oil. Jst my opinion. Great advice on how often & supplies! U got a 👍 up'd & sub'd.
Thanks for the positive feedback, much appreciated! I agree, all the oil came out as when it was refilled it was just right on the dipstick. Thanks for like and subscribe!
Great tip on removing drain plug gasket
My 2005 corolla just hit 250k miles and going strong.
Good job, that shows me two things: 1. Toyota makes a great car. 2. You do an excellent job with maintenance 👏!
Great video. Word of wisdom the crush washer is supposed to be changed with every oil change, They are super cheap no reason not to buy 4 or more at a time to keep a stock on hand. This will not only prevent oil leaks around the plug as the plug and pan make a mating impression on the washer but after a crush washer is used once the second time the torque spec will be off which can lead to over tightening and stripped threads.
Good and tight is all you need. The torque spec is probably no where near stripping anything
There's a much more important factor to replacing the crush washer. And that's not having your drain plug backing out doing down the road. Screw the leaks and the stripped threads, that's an easy fix. A drain plug backing out at 70 mph is instant loss of oil pressure and loss of an engine most likely.
Hello! Nice video. Curious: I noticed the filter you pulled off ended in "YZZF2." But the new one you put on ended with "YZZN1." Can you explain? Thanks!
I'm pretty sure 0W-16 only comes in synthetic.
Toyota OEM filters are pre-lubed. No need to apply oil to the gasket. Other brands that are not pre-lubed do require that so good to mention it in the video.
You hand tightened the filter. You don't hand tighten the drainplug. Using a wrench, even though it's not a power tool, is wrench tight...not hand tight.
Just below the full mark on the dip-stick is good. If you warm up the engine to full operating temperature it would likely be at the full mark.
Good job! One of the better oil change videos.
Great feedback Jack, thank you so much for your detailed feedback! True, filter is tightened by hand 3/4 turn past when it first seats, drain plug started by hand and then snugged up with ratchet. Your comments will help others as they watch and learn. Thank you for watching, commenting and the positive feedback! Much appreciated!
I love how you point camera and show us exactly where to pay extra attention, so far the best oil change video, my Raw 4 xle hybrid will be 1 year old in march and im hesitant to let them change oil. On my 6 month service they refused to change oil. I got 3k so far but after watching you I`m confident I can change oil my self. Accordind to AMD fella he is saying the best and easiest thing to prolong toyota`s life is to change oil twice a year. I got 1 question, should I put small earth magnet on oil filter?. Is it true magnet will keep all micro metal particles in the filter that way it does not circulate back?. Sorry it may be stuped question, but I`m trying to learn.
Nah…no needed for magnet. Making sure oil change every 5000miles or every 6months if wanna keep car for long 5+ year. This video clip, oil drained out was very bad.
“Toyotas are so easy to service there is no reason not too”. I couldn’t agree more!
Not the 2016 4Runner.
Good video. Just bought a new RAV4. Nice car. Looking forward to taking care of it.
Amazing step by step instructions. Shows u really care about ur work and viewers
Great video. Thank you for taking the time to share all of you knowledge and experience!
Removing and setting aside the oil cap also helps the oil drain faster. Also reminds people that there's no oil yet haha!
Mobile1 is the same as the Toyota oil, but I do use OEM Toyota oil filters.
Not the same additive package…
Mobile One is exceptional oil, good to know! Thanks for commenting.
@@christophervanzetta Change it more often and you're fine. People are obsessed with additive packages...

@@throttle-onJohn how many litter oil to use RAV4 thanks
I love your attitude man! Great video thanks.
I didn’t hear you mention that the vehicle has be on a flat surface prior to checking the oil level. Take it off the ramps. Some might not know that.
Great video. I am going back to changing oil. I just don’t feel safe having other people doing the oil changes on my cars. I have a 2019 Rav too. I love driving it.
Some folks get excited about pre filling the new oil filter. Pretty tough in this case. Any comments? Thanks for the video.
The user's manual says you can use any SAE : 0W16, 0W20, 10W20, 10W30 or 5W30. I use 5W30 Full synthetic since is the cheapest one in terms of intervals oil changing
That is true, the manual does give other options given different temperature ranges. That is a reasonable course of action. Thanks for chiming in!
Hello?
I recommend 0W-20 in Summer!!
I would ‘t go any higher.
Just sayin …
Excellent video (even though I know most of this stuff, just wanted to visualize what I'm getting into on this particular vehicle before doing the actual job). I like your presentation style and relaxed demeanor, that brings the video to the next level ....
I thought with the new A24A engine they recommend to prime the oil filter? I always try not to forget very noisy during start-up if you don't!
It is very easy to fill the prefill filter since it installs with the threaded side up and it will speed up how quickly oil get to top end to stop the clatter. Good point! 👍
I wish they made recycling easier with pickup on your terrace like the city does for leaves. There's no standardized rules for.pickup locations. I would gladly pay an extra $10 to 20 in property taxes for pickup service of used chemicals. Thanks for your attention to the little details.
Excellent points, thanks for commenting and contributing.
Fill the filter with oil before install to reduce the amount of time before oil pressure builds.
Did you ever see how small that filter is? I always prefill oil filter, the size of this filter is so small looks like it came of a lawn mower.....lol
Oil filter was small and lay in the horizontal position so may not needed to have some oil in it prior to install, imho.
My compliments! I recently changed my 2021 Rav4 Oil Filter and found out that the most Filter Wrenches have a 3/8in drive slot. Did you find any 1/2in drive filter wrenches that fit the 90915-yzzn1 oil filter? If you know of any please let met know where to buy one. I am a fairly large guy and I found out that I had to decide what I was going to do before I went under the car. Turning myself over under the car was next to impossible and I used ramps in my garage. If you can do an oil change on this car without ramps, I salute you again. Bravo!
Nice video and thank you.
Normally I don't comment but not for nothing, you SHOULD fill that filter with oil. Yes, I know the connection is SIDEWAYS and you'll more than likely gett a wee bit of spillage but it's BETTER than putting a dry filter on. YES, it has been PROVEN to be VERY BENEFICIAL due to pressure build lagging by ~6 seconds to first fill that filter and thereby lacking in the engine. You will promote unnecessary wear to the piston cylinder walls if you don't. Like saving a QUARTER a day. A QUARTER is neglible but after 20 years you'll have $1,825.
I always add some oil to the new filter before installing.
Especially with the filter installing upside down, all this can do is help.
Thank you. Very detailed video. I read the comments for extra info.
Do you happen to know what the savings is versus taking it to the dealership to have it done?
That is a very good question, I do not since I always do it myself. Would be useful to have a cost comparison.
Just had my '17 Rav4 done at Goodyear, $80
If you take it to the Toyota dealership, it's around $120 normally but sometime they have coupon that brings it down to around $80-90. To do it yourself, the cost is around $30-40 in material + your time. I do it myself not because it's cheaper, but it's knowing that it's done right.
I always shake the oil bottles before pouring. There are settled additives that need to be suspended in the oil. All in all a very good video, but I tend to be in more of a hurry. For example, I clean the leafs, etc. while the oil is draining or while I am pouring the new oil.
Making sure oil change every 5000miles or every 6months if wanna keep car for long 5+ year. This video clip, oil drained out was very bad. Got my 2002 Sienna, just passed 244,000 mileage, the engine still quiet as 20+ years ago (of course I do the oil changed every 5000 miles). Btw, before drain the oil out, loose the cap and the dip stick so oil drain out quick and easy.
Excellent!! Thanks for sharing, great video and audio!! Off to buy my oil and filter !
What is the part number of the tool to take off the oil filter?
I just went out and looked and was suprised to find that it is absent of any markings at all. So strange, I do remember purchasing it from Toyota dealer for a Toyota Camry about 15 years ago. It was the best one I ever found, just lucky it fits the RAV! Sorry it is devoid of any markings or inscription.
Thank you for this, especially resetting yje maintenance in the computer.
Can you provide an amazon link to oil filter wrench device that you used to remove it ?
Good video. Can you use a Wick oil filter?
Good video, Treat yourself to a 3/8 torque wrench for the drain plug bolt.
great video man. l can tell you love your SUV and you really look after your vehicle. Well done!
Thank you! Good read, I do love maintaining stuff properly, probably because I had nothing but beat up stuff that I had to MAKE run when I was younger. A reliable car is such a nice thing to have and maintain.
Hi, thanks for your detailed video, can you share where can I buy the oil filter removal tool? thanks
What brand or part number is your oil filter wrench? Exellent video
You should always change the oil sump washer. You also should remove the filler cap and dip stick before draining.
wrong!
@@phillyretrokid What's wrong about it? I've seen cars with reused crush washers where the drain plug backed out on the road. Absolutely stupid not to replace the crush washer.
I had a copper washer on my Corolla for the entire time I owned it (15 years). Never replaced it, just reused it every oil change. The oil plug never backed out and never leaked. I plan to do the same thing on my RAV4.
Thank you so much, loved the video on the oil change 👍🏽
Clean video bro, put more videos about rav4 2021. Thanks
Nice job. daughter just got the new 2022 very nice car but screen is horrible even in her Limited slow and bad resolution which will be upgraded in 2023. As for me I have a PHEV. Can't wait to get my first EV to avoid half of the annual maintenance and more parts in ICE that need replacement.
Thank you! All excellent points indeed! Yes, unfortunately all that you say about the screen is true in terms of being slow and low resolution. So glad that this will be upgraded in 2023! Great cars otherwise!
Thanks for the video! I have a 2021 RAV4 XLE also, it is my 4th Toyota. I agree with you it’s been my experience that if you take care of a Toyota they will take care of you.
So true, if you maintain them, they will run and run and run!
I did some research and I’m not positive but I think that Toyota brand oil you used is made by Mobil 1.
Yes, but the Mobil 1 oil is formulated to Toyota specifications, different than the store bought Mobil 1.
Great tips can’t wait to try on mine thanks 👍
you should remove the oil filler cap will make the oil drain faster
True and good tip! Thanks for commenting, but it will also increase the velocity of oil coming out and increase the risk of oil splash into pan. I do it both ways and not sure of which I prefer. Keep the tips coming!
@@throttle-onJohn My instructor said its also a good idea to make sure the fill hole is always accessible before draining. Good practice. Especially if the previous service guy over torqued something. Usually you do not need to worry on oil cap but others maybe.
@@EDISONTECH Good thoughts, that can especially be true of a transmission or front and rear differential. So true! You would hate to get oil out and none back in, then you have a big problem! 😉
What are all the tools needed for this , wish he posted links
Torque the bolt to spec.. 30ft pounds
I pre fill my filter slightly to soak the material
How often should you change the oil? Took my car in for the 5,000 maintenance and they said the oil is good till 10,000 miles. That doesn’t feel or sound right to me
Your intuition is serving you well. They are correct in telling you that Toyota recommends 10,000 miles. However, my comfort level is around 5,000 miles and sometimes even slightly sooner. Oil is so cheap, I don't really understand why they are trying to push oil change intervals so high. I guess it lowers the total cost of ownership when an analysis is done. All I know is that I have always stuck with 3,000-5,000 mile oil change intervals and I have never had a car that uses oil or has had an internal engine issue of any kind.
@@throttle-onJohn thanks! I checked the owners manual and it said it’s good for 10,000 miles so that made me feel a bit better. I am always used to doing 3,000-5,000 with my old car. Maybe once my Toyota care expires I’ll do it myself every 5,000
@@Marygeniusz13 Yes, that is exactly what I would do! 5,000 miles seems very reasonable, a nice happy medium, and will give your Toyota a long a d trouble free life.
will the citric acids in the lemon pledge corrode the plastic pieces?
Very nice clean video, thank you for helping us with your heart
I recently got my oil changed at Valvoline, and they did not replace all of the screws for the access door/cover guard. Do you know what screws are the correct ones? I have the correct part serial number for the actual cover just no the screws. Also, will be using your video to change it myself next time to not deal with this again.
Thank you for this well made video. I’m doing my first oil change tomorrow @ 2k miles as a “post break in” oil change- cars one month old. My first shock was how affordable an OEM Toyota filter and 5qt of oil is. My next shock is seeing in this video how easy the filter is to access, as well as how easily that oil pan gasket can be changed in the future. Before this RAV4 I’ve been driving a BMW last couple years, and it’s about $90 for a filter & 7qt of oil. As well as a nightmare if you have to repair an oil leak lol.
You are very welcome! Nice job on doing a post break in oil change, well done, might as well get that stuff out of the motor. Yes, so true, super inexpensive to do it yourself and everything is so nice to access. Certain vehicles make a simple oil change a real pain and expensive, but not the RAV 4!
Yup, me too the dealer filters are much cheaper never thought about it.
Great help!! Thank you. Very well done.
Just got a rav4 and I have the same concern of taking it to the dealer for an oil change. I had my 2010 highlander taken to the dealer and they messed up the placement of the o ring in the catrige style oil filter and I got home with half oil had leaked out.
Thanks for sharing! Your story is just what I was talking about. Great example. 👍 It is so nice to do it yourself to perfection every time. Sometimes I get close to taking it in for an oil change but in the past it came back with a new door ding or something mechainically not quite right, or stripped oil filter access screw plate holes, or something else... Now I just do it myself and then none of those other things happen. Your story could have ended really badly if you hadn't caught it! Good job investigating!
Not for nothing but did you remove the stuck on old crush washer? I saw it stuck to the oil pan, but the video didnt show you removing it. Nice vid....
Toyota & Mazda are the best automobile manufacturers in the world.
We are a owner of a rav4 what is engine maintenance on the odometer screen mean ?
Thank you so much great tutorial!!!
Mine is a 2021 Rav4 XLE gas, after 3k miles my oil still looks like new. Yours looked like Hershey's chocolate syrup. I'm a fanatic about oil too, when it looks dirty, it gets changed. Maybe it was just the lighting or camera that made it look dark. Nice car.
Nice Rav! Yes, the lighting somehow makes it look like black gear oil. It did look bad, but when I poured it into disposal container later it looked a little better. I think the oil gets contaminated quicker during the winter months and with outside storage. I also have a short, 2 mile commute which is the worst for oil. However, the oil only had maybe 2500 miles and 6 months on it. I agree though, it looked so bad!
Thanks for sharing
What kind of tires are on your RAV 4?
Great info and well presented!
Why do some people add oil inside the filter before putting on? Do you do it ?
Good question, it is a way to reduce the time it takes for the oil pump to fill the empty oil filter and start pumping oil to the top end (valves etc) of motor following an oil change where everything gets emptied out. If it is easy to do such as with an oil filter that is sitting in an orientation that allows it (like this model of Rav4) it doesn't hurt to do it. However, if you don't do it, you aren't damaging anything. I do it sometimes if I am feeling ambitious, but at other times I don't. I do it about 50% of the time depending on how much of a hurry I am in.
@@throttle-onJohn ok. Great answer. Thanks
Awesome video. That definitely will save people money.
Its nice to help people and videos are great but you know the difference in 15mins and 45mins right? because only tightening it a 1/4 turn instead of 3/4 isnt a good idea either some might follow your exact approach and be in for a big Suprise. I just mention it because at only a 1/4 turn maybe with road vibrations etc.. it can easily loosen up. Nice video though
How do you get the mantience due light off on dash when oil is changed?
Hi John, thanks for the video. I’m all for changing engine oil as a DIY, but how and where does one dispose or recycle the old oil in an environmentally safe and responsible way?
Overhere in Europe you can bring it all to the city dump, where they collect, besides waste, also all recycle stuff like batteries, metal, wood, paper, light bulbs etc. etc. But hey! This is Europe! 😁
Great question, and thanks for watching! Where I live, they want it poured into clear plastic jugs (usually milk gallon containers) where we set it curbside on recycle day and they pick it up. Or another option is to put it into jugs and take it directly to the recycle center here in town where they take it to be recycled. It is an extra step, but it is well worth the trouble to be sure it is handled in the proper way.
AutoZone will take used oil for recycling
@@geraldevans2535 Cool, I did not know that, thanks for commenting so we know!
Any place that sells oil must take old oil back. I use Walmart
Hi John, thank you for this great video. Would you be able to tell us what ramps you were using in this video to lift your rav4?
Thanks for watching and for your kind words! The ones used in the video are called Rhino Ramps. These look like them: Check this out on Amazon

@@throttle-onJohn Awesome thanks again. Have you encountered any problems with your rav4, i just ordered one and curious on the reliability of the newer models? But it is a Toyota after all.
@@minimike4915 Hi Mike! Great choice, I have had zero problems with my Rav4 over 4 years and almost 20k miles. It still runs and drives like new. 👍 My 15 year old daughter will be driving in less than a year and I will be passing it on down so I have a Rav4 Prime on order. I'll do a comparison video between the two when it gets here, which probably won't be any time soon. No complaints on my Rav, it is my favorite vehicle to drive on a daily basis. 👌 You will love your Rav!
@@throttle-onJohn Great Stuff, I appreciate the replies. Take care and be well.
