Welcome to the latest installment of Tips & Tricks, my series where I offer up some advice and helpful guidance to new and popular games. Spelunky 2 has recently dethroned it's very own predecessor as my favorite game of all time. I have dumped almost 130+ hours into the title since it's PS4 launch and now have 30+ on Steam already. This video will peel back the layers of the games opening coarseness and hopefully offer some assistance to you fellow Spelunkers out there!

11:40 Spelunky HD veteran, I was playing Spelunky 2 for my first time not knowing what to expect. At one session I feel so confident having almost 10 hearts, the kapala and a lot of other equipment and a jetpack. I must have been flying in one of the dark levels where the arrow traps shoot firey arrows. Got hit by a flamey arrow in the back and the jetback exploded and I am instantly dead. Didn't even know the jetpack/powerpack (also the bombs in the shopkeeper for example) can so easily explode. I was like what? What did just happen now??? It's so much "fun" after knowing Spelunky HD to go with a fresh mind on the sequel!
p.s. Just to say there is so much more things to learn, it's interesting how the elements interact more in this one. Not only throwing arrows can catch fire, but if you throw an array to that snake/scorpion that can poison you, you kill it but the arrow if it survives it's poisoned now and you can use it to poison another enemy. Such cool attention to detail! Also, I think the arrow has health. You said in the video if you kill big enemies it breaks. But from my observation, if it doesn't break when hitting simple enemies like bats/snakes, then throwing it 3 times to these enemies will finally break. I might be wrong on this, need to check it again. It's funny when you see a bat near the arrow trap, you expect the arrow to kill it and protect you, but it hits the bat and kills and continues flying towards you. There are so much cool stuff!

But now I can hear the stories and see my friends and other people experiencing it. It's one hell of a journey. Super glad you found the video and I wish you the best on your runs!
"If you save him, he will snipe Vlad out of the air... unless of course Derek blocks the shot" Ahhh... so that's what it is. I wondered why a block occasionally just conveniently happens to spawn in front of Van Horsling to prevent him from hitting Vlad. It was Derek all along! I should have known.
Now...if only we can get NL to watch this video....

i havent played alot of HD but when i saw 2 coming out i decided to just go for it this time. but damn 2 is hard. i cant even get to 2-1 xD tips might help tho :D
I played Spelunky HD for years beat Yama many times had few million-dollar runs, never knew the ropes could burn.

I was so happy because I went to Vlad's and got his cape like I always do. And I randomly figured out that the blood was doubled! Upon this realization I got hyped and went to the next level, just to get trapped in a 2x2 by an angry shopkeeper.

Great video and hopefully this helps me be at least mediocre at the game.
Rewards for kali ive noticed go from random item to skull cup to jelly thing that gives a bunch of hp but i havent gotten further than that also if you start from 1-4 and get the hired hand and go to lava zone there will always be another hired hand on 2-1 or 2-2 and you can put those two on the altar for the first item then put the damsel on for the cup.

This game is so hard for me having not played the first one. There were many tips here and I still have more questions. I want to enjoy this game but damn!!!!!
Also interesting how you said curing curse could be a massive spoiler. I'm assuming you're talking about the elixir, though i think the more intended method is by sacrificing.
I love the caveman shopkeeper he has reasonably priced wares and sells stuff you will always wanna be carrying he might even have a pot containing a gem he’s a lot more useful then those darn overpricing normal ones
he's also the easiest to rob ;)
@@litapd311 yea I’m pretty sure they can also give you good items if your lucky such as a power pack and such
Curse can be lifted by sacrificing stuff on Kali Altars or using the Ankh
or a certain item from a certain challenge that when you have no ailments (curse or poison) gives 8 hp if you are poisoned gives 6 and cures it if you are cursed gives 4 and cures it and if both gives 2 and heals both.

Hi @PentaHybrid loved your video, is there a way to quick stand up after getting hit by a rolling horned lizard or maybe a totem trap? I have pissed my hired hands sometimes or gotten in front of a boomerang wielding tikiman only to find myself on a death loop. At moments like that I start mashing every button of my keyboard but to no avail, I have died miserably many times after having like... ALL the important items.
I really liked all the video and I've been most of the times taking the Jungle path, but seeing how fun it is I guess I'm going to try going to Volcana more often.

I don't think I've ever done anybody do this except myself but some spike pits have bone piles in the middle and you can simply drop something onto the pile to break it and drop down to grab onto the ledge. Saves you rope or bomb in most cases.

It would be cool if there was some kind of reinforced whip that could whip away lava from a surface and deal extra damage. It would probably be obtained in Volcana
When it comes to robbing shops with explosive items I just move them to the front of the shop so they are out of the way

My main issue with Quillback is the first time I beat him, I killed him instantly with a shotgun, and then had no idea where to go, since he hadn't dug any paths for me.
It didn't help that his level was also the dark level.

apparently the 4-leaf clover will also make your teleporter range always maximum
The torch is also a great weapon against the quillback boss. Only takes a few hits and saves bombs.
True, though I find you can kill him much quicker and more efficient using just one bomb. You still get a net gain of 2 bombs and 1 hp and is very safe and quick.

A few corrections / tips (regarding the spoiler sections):
You actually don't need to hit Vlad at all with an arrow to kill him. When you hit him, he will teleport behind you. You can use this to make him teleport into a wall, which will still count for Van Horsing (I do this pretty consistently whenever the arrow is blocked).
The ghost shop is always located just above the shortcut door on 1-4, not just randomly within the middle.

I'm well aware of both of those.
The Vlad bit with the arrow was a joke because he missed. You can kill him normally too. Hence the twitch clip. The joke must have been missed by you, sorry about that.
I definitely don't believe I said the shop was random. But if I did that was my bad.
Edit: I watched that segment. I never said it was random. Lol, but all good. Appreciate the clarification just in case others may have misunderstood. This was all rapid fire. Didn't want a 45 minute video. Rest assured I'm well aware of all the things though.

Watching thie video cuz I have spelunky 2 installed on my pc. Funny thing is, i started playing spelunky hd a while back and won't touch spelunky 2 until I finish the whole game, i haven't even beaten olmec yet. I only got around to meeting him a few times. I also discovered th black market, mothership and worm levels. The crysknife is OP as frick. My favorite item in thr game hands down.
My biggest irk is that success for me seems dependant on getting kapala, and the kali alters seem inconsistent. Wish they'd at least have a guaranteed one in 1-2 or 1-3
Kapala is vital to long term success. Anyone who has high skill at the game would agree. Due to the way the level gen works in 2, I'd honestly recommend restarting until you get a run you like. Don't let people shame you for this.

Thank you. A like of course but these are tips and tricks for Spelunly veterans :-). I love Spelunky 2 and had played Spelunky (what you call HD?) and am actually getting farther in Spenunky 2 than in the first one. I encounter those npc's one of which you called parsnip. No idea how to free them though.
Just gotta push the block. It's acts kind of like a door. A ton of these tips are for newer and more experienced players. I'm sorry you feel they aren't.

Correction for the arrow, it wont break for small enemies that die in one hit like spiders or snakes or bats, it only breaks for the larger enemies with more than one HP like cavemen, moles, and lizards. Even if you kill them with it they still break.

Something i've been curious about with kali but never gotten around to checking.
Does favour go above 8 or reset, and more importantly, if you on 7 and give the alter a damsel are you wasting 7 favour, or do you now have 6/14
I haven't done enough science. But it does go higher. Table is such 8: Item, 16: Kapala, 24: Rejuvination, Every interval of 8 after is more jelly. But I haven't seemed to reach a cap.

I developed a strategy for ghost pots
1. Carry pot to end of level
2. Break pot at end of level
3. Grab the gem
4. Leave quickly
in the first game shopkeepers are insane

Wanted to like the sequel, but I still play the first way more. I think adding too much into the gameplay killed it for me. Looks real pretty.

The first rule of Spelunky is LYW, "Learn Your Whip". That is really all you need in the world of Spelunky, kind of funny but very true. There are parts in the game that require a rope or two, but most problems in the game can be solved with movement, varying in degrees of difficulty, and the whip. If you learn movement and the whip, you basically have solved the game. The problem then becomes trap recognition and time/timing, both of which can be overcome by MOVEMENT and THE WHIP. You see Spelunky is very simple game. Kappa.

Ive probably died over 200 times and only got to 2-1. I can't even move without taking damage. I whipped a pile of bones and took damage lmao. Wish I knew how brutal this game was before I wasted 30$ on it
3 years late but I still find it odd how you waited for people to skip ahead to avoid spoilers but then don't spoil them anyway. I mean, no offense, but if people were looking for gameplay tips, I don't think they'd be too concerned on how you cure curse.

I have hundreds of hours in Spelunky 1 on 360; and I have 70 hours in 2 yet I literally cannot make it past world 2, I've made it to Olmec twice in 2, and never even past world 2 in 1

An easy way to get hit by the curse pot is to be holding it and then have A Lizard Roll into you.
I find it less reliable due to just how ridiculous stun lock is. But it definitely works. Not my preferred way though.
