In 70 years of fishing I've been checked 4 times. I think two of those were just creel censuses. Let's face it; fish & game departments don't have enough resources to effectively enforce the laws.
It’s good to see them checking. I still see too many people keeping everything they catch
no - no it is not. what happened to 'land of the free'? did you know that 100 years ago you didnt need a single license or proof to do anything? they call it the american dream cause you have to be asleep to believe it.
They harrass the one's who go by the rules.
Went pier fishing the other night on the North shore. Saw a group of people fishing for porgy. As we left the area we were approached by two officers just doing a routine check. Normally I would see them during the day. This time they came out late at night. I was surprised but happy to see them. During inspection we were fine, however the majority of people fishing near got a good learning lesson about following the rules. Turns out some had under sized fish and had no fishing license. Hopefully lesson learned. Thanks John for providing awesome video and text content. Tight lines everyone.
@@brickcity9mm896 less paperwork that way
@@johndiasjr9000 then they're in the wrong line of work if you're trying to avoid doing your job.
I wish there were way more of them. Nothing to worry about if youre not a poacher.
Besides freedoms being infringed on. No illegal search and seizure seems not to apply to fishermen.
Gestapo's finest
thats how we protect the fishery from poachers..but officer sure looked like a cop from Super Troopers lol
The new camera angle is fantastic especially as the boat is driving. Good job as always John and greetings from Gio Western Long Island sound. No one else has shaped my fishing techniques and strategies more than you.

Thank You John Even Thou Im A NY&NJ Kayak Angler
I Like Your Typing Style, Meng!
He was nice, I’ve had them pull
Up at the captree ramp, no greeting just right onto my boat and start looking in the cooler without any hey how are ya greeting.
They don’t need any warrant to check your coolers and bags for NYS environmental law violations. I think that’s a good thing bc some people just keep everything and totally ignore the rules and regs.
I’ve dealt with that ECO during this past goose season and let me tell you, I wish they were all like him. What you seen on camera now is the way he is off camera. A gentleman to deal with and wish they were all like him
Another great fishing grand slam! Very friendly officer - wish they were all like that.
I've met the dec officer in my area (mt sinai) once. I've seen them many times, though. Its great to have them out checking.
love the new camera angle, incredible video as always!
I got checked by the game wardens yesterday by a lake in NC. They were very nice and tried to point me towards some spots. Unfortunately the spots didn't work out, but they were nice enough. As long as you have a license and no illegal fish I find them to be pretty cool.
agreed, i was aproached too hah! early in the season but they're staying on top! i was so used to not needing my license but now that im over 18 its been a thing to make sure of.
atleast the marine licenses costs nothing
Love the new camera angle!
Those fish we’re eating the pink lure like a candy 😅. Great video John like always 🙏
Professional and courteous that’s the way five star ⭐️ service thanks 🙏
Love your content! Can I make a suggestion of showing your fishfinder more often and explaining what you're looking for in terms of bottom or marks? I love when content creators spend time showing what made them stop on a spot or show what makes that spot a regular stop for them. You're awesome!
No go buy the books 📖 😊
@@slange455 what if you cant read?
That new camera angle lets you really get a sense just how big those weakfish were
I do the same thing when my wife and I are in bed. The camera angle makes my peppah grindah look much bigger. I’m Irish so I need all the help I can get.
Excellent video. You are organized with all the paper requirements. Good on you.
Really like the new camera angle John...Chris
Thank u for the new camera angle! POV is nice sometimes but can get boring
Thanks for the vids john ....im learning allot from them . ❤
As always, great video. Keep up the great work, enjoy.
I live on Long Island, Suffolk county …… the amount of people keeping illegal fish is STAGGERING. John you see it too. The shoreline is dotted with families fishing and keeping EVERYTHING and the conservation police will walk or drive past everyone of them and stop YOU and check YOU and your paperwork but turn a blind eye to the others.
Not true this time around. I was on the north shore fishing with a buddy of mine. As we left the pier two officers came by and did an inspection. We were fine however most on the pier got in a little hot water with under size fish and no fishing license. I thought the officer's did a great job and I was happy to see them working late at night.
I rode your coat tails on that left vs right topic on my channel. Gave you full credit for the discussion. It definitely got viewers to interact and become engaged. Thank you for always leading the way, at least for me (and thousands of others). I tried the (right) hand above the reel method while fighting a fish and man did it feel awkward. I can't get out of my own way sometimes! lol! Goes without saying, GREAT video John. Glad you're back up north getting it done!!
Another awesome video by the legend!
Another great video John..thanks for sharing 👍
Love seeing those guys checking people. I only wish they checked the migrants more because I've seen first hand on many occasions that they are the ones keeping under sized and over limit fish.
I use left hand retrieve on a spinning reel and right handed on baitcaster reels. It just feels natural to me.
Great video John phenomenal job 👍🏼
We need that guy on the boarder, they only bother people that have ID and money
I forgot to comment on your last video, but I also grew up on Long Island and fish exactly the way you do. I reel a conventional reel with my right hand and a spinning reel with my left. It's as natural as can be for me and I couldn't imagine doing it any other way. Also, I like the new camera angle, especially when you are under way.
I do the same, I think it's because when we first started fishing, most conventional reels are right hand retrieve. After using mainly spinning reels, I remember when I first used a conventional reel, I thought how wonky it was to retrieve with my right (as a right handed person) but now, many, many years later I cannot imagine retrieving a conventional reel from the left side.
Really enjoy the new camera angle! Keep the vids coming!
You are legit an inshore God. The way you nail fish is insane. I spent Sat trying for a variety and couldn't get bit by anything I wanted to bite. I do love that boat. That thing is sharp. I'm looking to bump up to a motor on my new boat. 40 works and I'm actually getting more speed on a bigger boat with same motor but the ass isn't there
New camera angle is awesome 👏. One ca really see the rod action and whole pic of the water conditions too
Awesome video john love the content aways learning Sumthing new with you appreciate it !!! And sweet Grandslam !!!
They are very under staffed which is a shame. I watched a certain group of poachers keeping several short stripers and called one I have on speed dial but unfortunately he was at Breezy Pt and I was in the Western Sound and at least 45 minutes away so unfortunately they got away but karma’s a bitch
Some damn nice fishing!!! LOVE those weakies
First time watching you mate you are a very good fisherman. It was an education watching you. Brilliant well done.
I appreciate that!
I got stopped by the same officer -same place. Very professional! BTW- great content as always.
Love the new camera angle!!!
Great content as always but definitely missing the surf videos. You know as well as anyone that those boat fish don’t count!
Florida Fish and Wildlife stopped me and my wife upon our return to the ramp in our kayaks... we passed inspection with flying colors but he held us up for 25 minutes.. it was at sundown and we still had to load up.
Let me play devils advocate here. Because I swear I see this trend in NJ. I'm convinced some of these officers go after the most legit anglers in order to have a pleasant exchange and have little in the way of pushback or paperwork. Poaching has become a real problem in coastal NJ particularly in the Bayshore region. seems as if the the wardens are nowhere to be found but when a family of 4 pulls up after doing a little fluking, they are all over the situation. I'm not trying to cast dispersions on anyone, but it just seems unusual that true busts of real lawbreakers are few and far between.
Fresh water fisherman here, but I use a right handed baitcaster because that's the way I learned it. But there's another good reason for it. Using a left hand spinning reel and a right handed casting reel spreads the stress around. When you get into your 60's you'll appreciate it.
I’m a lefty and use a right handed spinning reel. My switch of hands as I cast is so natural, like yours on the baitcaster. 50 years doing this and it seems natural to me. Like transferring a baseball from a glove to the throwing hand.
As far as switching from right hand to left hand with the reels the only time i think it makes a difference is if your getting bites within a second or two of the bait hitting the water. Ive seen plenty of people miss fish flipping and pitching while they were changing hands. In salt water it doesnt matter besides maybe mangrove fishing.
With the right/left retrieve on bait casters, you prefer right retrieve because you got used to it and developed your hook setting technique based on that style. When you use a spinning reel with the left retrieve, you hook set a different way based on that retrieve. In essence, I think if a (right handed) person from the beginning started using a left retrieve bait casting or a right retrieve spinning reel they'd get used to it, develop their own technique and would tend to prefer that retrieve side for the rest of their fishing life.
Hey I know that officer, don't let him tie up your boat for you! I had to jump in after my boat! not his fault really the wave and wind action undid the tie off.
“Do you know who I am? John MFing Skinner. Read my book!”
You want to get boarded? Come to the panhandle of Florida. We are boarded at least 4 times a year in Pensacola. FWC and USCG. Always professional and respectful. Don’t mid a bit.
that rear camera angle is the best!!!
I started fishing when there were no left handed bait casting reels. Then when they came out, I tried using one and I just did not have the left handed coordination for it. I still have right hand reeal baitcasters Too old to change now.
Great trip! I’ve always used L crank baits and spins. Personally I don’t like taking my right hand off the rod.
i using left hand baitcaster. its just feels natural to cast with right hand and be ready with the left hand to reel without changing hands after the casting. im right handed btw. if im jigging its actually doesnt matter. for jigging they both feel comfort for me.
DFG are some of the best LEOs around. I fish in California and they are never anything but professional, polite, and thorough. They were also first on scene for my lone mayday. Their work ensures our sport and I never grouse about fishing licenses and boat reg, it's money well spent.
That a great angle for the camera. Get to see the action of the rod as well
Nice sized weakfish!
Jon that’s exactly how I’ve always used a rod. An yes grew up fishing freshwater way inland from the salty.
But the point is , I’d don’t know how it’s been determined wether if it’s rod in right or left , or the reel has to be right or left ? Lol
I’ve been asked if I’m trying or left because I cast over my left shoulder naturally, an I crank on the right. Casting my right hand is on the but of the rod for power. And cast like batting a ball. Brook fishing you cast way an catching brook trout
Camera angle is great
Like the new camera angle!
Seems weak fishing and fluke are somewhat similar in technique, except the bounce on weak is a lot slower than for fluke. Great vid !
I like the new camera
Sometimes wish for more wardens. 12&16 year old bagged 5 snook about 12” each. I told them the slot size.. kept anyway. No wake zone full of manatee and boats about wash away the kayaks.
The sea is wide, the water is immense, but the people who go fishing are few, the fish must be full for fun, dear friends.
RH vs LH ~ all personal preference. Also I believe the numbers are related to when LH reels became available, which was not too long ago, so I would expect more RH sold in the market still. Personally I do bottom fishing (not jigging, but bait and wait, or drift fishing w/suspended baits) with RH conventional reels, however for lures (plugs, jigging, musky fishing, etc) I tend to use LH retrieve.
Agree that it's not a representative sample
Wait until those new restrictions kick in. That’s going to be interesting. It’s going to hurt a lot of people 😞
What restrictions?
Grew up using a LH spinner and right hand conventional, teaching myself to use a left hand conventional after a shoulder injury.. tough to reprogram 30yrs of muscle memory
In CA there are 275 officers. No commercial enforcement, pretty much
I have set ice fishing with an officer and let him use my tackle to catch some bluegills for supper waiting on a guy that was supposed to be diligently monitoring his tip up and wasn't said officer made off with about 15 illegal tip ups and a legal mess of fish for supper what a great deal!!
I like seeing them
Those trout are monsters
Great footage keep em coming
Come to Citrus county and get checked every time you go out especially out of Crystal River.
why does that boat launch look so familiar? I need to catch one of these weakfish or trout. I am starting to think i just suck at catching them as i cant get em. go to virginia and all and strike out. i can catch everything else just not them. Nice to see that they are around up north so they should be around delaware. Ive seen a few but cant get em. great video and love the camera angle. just curious have you ever tried using a bass chatterbait for flounder
Like you boat.
John, thanks for saying hello, and the picture last week. I use the salt strong leprechaun shad/diamond jig set up for weakfish with much success. Have you tried a test comparing this to using the mossy mullet you use in SWFL?
Next video.
I love the enforcement. There is some disgusting lawless behavior at Green Island and Short Beach. No parking permits or registery. Keeping almost everything, over the limit and letting baby fish dry up on the dock. Stashing fish in their trunks so they dont get caught.
You are so right. There’s been a group of anglers there for the last few weeks keeping fish after fish with no regard for the bag limit or slot size and when they do release a fish it’s usually with a drop kick or bounce of the rocks after they’ve had the fish out of the water for 5-10 minutes and when you say something to them they just say mind your own business. They also have the balls to post all their vids…Pisses me off
I am currently looking hard for a left hand two speed lever drag and it's not been easy. The Shimano Talica in a lefty is not available in America. Any ideas?
New camera angle is 👍
Are you using the SS or SSH?
Why does the eyes on you rod torque over to the left when reeling a fish?
where are you? it doesn't look like the Sound. when I lived out there I used something called an "umbrella rig" while trolling. have you ever used them?
Petualangan laut yang seru, tapi untuk yang pemberani
Nice new camera angle.
I have always used a right hand baitcaster. Never heard of a left handed one. Majority of what I fish is fresh water but I am transitioning to salt water.
link for go pro camera post
I have baitcasters with handles on both sides, 1 of each. The left handed one was a gift from my dad but I got used to it. I just ordered a Penn Squall 300 with a right side handle. It's funny how I can use a baitcaster in either hand but spinning rods are always in my right hand.
I have a new penn squalls 300 I just fished once I'll sell you for 150
@@TamponTea already got one. I'd like a 400 but I don't need another 300.
@@comfortablynumb9342 ok all good are you located on the island?
@@TamponTea no I live in NC for now. I'm planning on moving to VA so I can fish the saltwater and grow stinky little plants. I grew up in Florida and miss the water, but they don't let people have little gardens there.
I for one am more focused on the ridiculous weakfish bite that you were on, impressive. What terrain are you looking for when targeting the weakies? I find them occasionally but never like that.
Deeper holes mostly, but they have their preferred areas and it's not like I can give a general rule that would work anywhere. If you have weaks, check the deeper holes this time of year.
I'm 53 with a valid fishing license since I was 18 and have yet to be asked to see it by fish and game.
Hey John what make of skiff is that? I had a Carolina skiff and a Pickerel sharpie but sold both and looking for another small skiff that’s low maintenance and won’t break the bank. Was also wondering what hp on her? Thanks
1986 grumman 5 meter boat
what boat ramp is this ?
Those trout were tanks!
A question for anyone, I don’t know when you recorded this but the water looks pretty clean there, this weekend the water in the great South Bay was filled with slimy moss so bad it made fishing impossible, the previous weekend was clean. Does anyone know why this happens ? Thanks.
Wind will do that.
I'd say the fishery is pretty healthy this year.....
Heres what I find hard to understand. I'm right handed , I use a right hand retrieve bait caster. However , when I go to a spinning rod , I switch the handle to the right side. That way my cranking hand is always on the same side. I never could understand why right handed people on a bait caster , use right hand retrieve but when they go to a spinning rod , they reel in with the left hand. Its just odd to me. I cast with my left and right hand ambidextrously but I always reel with my right.
I'm right handed. On a spinning reel, the retrieve is on the left side for me. On a conventional/baitcast reel, the retrieve is on the right side. I'm not sure why. It's how I was taught. Growing up fishing down the Jersey Shore, that's just the way it was for most people I thought. Anything else feels awkward and strange to me.
John which state ramp is this one. Is this the one by port of egypt
This is not a State ramp. It's a Town ramp.
John you had said you don’t eat stripers is that because of the mercury or another reason?
I prefer fluke. Stripers are OK.
If you like to be checked by wildlife officers, come to North Carolina, guaranteed to get checked at least once a trip. Especially if you are recreational fishing.
I hate when ppl come on my boat and say. John skinner says to do it this way. Those guys never get a second invite
I never say "do it this way". I say "this is what I do". People can take it or leave it.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing I do it differently, and catch less fish, LOL!
I keep my licenses as images on the phone, also never checked in FL😉
Duh. I should do that. Thanks.
