New Scented Lure Out-Fished Gulp 2:1! Then Monster Blues Attacked!

- Gulp finally lost out on one of my many attempts to out-fish it with another scented lure. Over 30 weakfish (Sea Trout) were boated in the experiment, and the Mossy Mullet bit.ly/MyCustomPaddletail scented with bit.ly/JohnSkinnerDrJuice easily out-fished Berkley Gulp. Jumbo bluefish complicated efforts by attacking anything they could chase down.

I am happy to see what looks like another solid year for weakfish. I remember my first one I ever caught. It was in 2000-2001. It happened to be on a fly rod and I swore it was a keeper bass until we got to see it. Man they fight well. Great video as always Mr. Skinner and thank you for what you do.
I like the camera angle from the stern camera better that the head shot. it compels me buy that rod, the bend is very apparent, I like it.
Great vid sir just some monster blues!! Love the camera angle especially with 2 guys fishing, living the dream.
Heck of a fishing trip right there! Great to see that type of action in the Sound.
My goodness! What a fishery you have up there! Congrats on a great day with your brother!
That’s crazy, never saw blues attacking weakfish. Wow great video John 🤘🏾🤘🏾
You guys killed it...what a fantastic day on the water. 👍
Certainly a trip to remember. Thanks for sharing.
Awesome catch John and Bob 🙂👍👍👍👍👍
Hell of a trip . Slammer blues and monster weakies. Nice job boys !
The new camera angle is definitely nice! Get to see you guys in action with the nice background scenery.
i love watching your vids John youve deffinately helped me become a better fluke fishermen keep the content coming ... tight lines my friend
So fascinating, off to breezy tight lines!
It's great to see the weakfish!
Very impressive fishing! Those big blues sure made a carnage! The new lure looks like a killer 🙂
I was going to try the mossy mullet myself here soon. Very cool to see.
Great trip. Like the new camera angle.
I like that you wear your vest out of respect for the retired coastie on board!
Nice to see the big Weakies. They seem to come in waves, like croakers. Some years are great, then many poor years. We used to fish live spot for them in Jersey early in the morning. I did try that left hand reel idea several years ago. Drove my son and I crazy and we sold the left hand reels fast!
I have to use lefthand crank baitcast set up. Just not comfortable on the right side. Preference maybe?
Wow, that is an old-time weakie. The 80s were the years of the weakfish. We had big brown sharks in the Delaware Bay. We would hook up on them because they were feeding on the weakies
What?!? I always switch my reels to the right hand. I'm from MD. Thanks always Mr. Skinner.
Did I hear FishGuts in this video 😂 way to work Go Get’em fellas
Great content as always but where are the surf videos????
Nice work. I need A Gansett after watching this.
I tried the Mossy Mullet as a teaser above an 80gm jig for sea bass yesterday. It was awesome. Limited out quick on jigs, with many double hookups in a row. I was pleased that the paddletail did not foul on the hook, as usually happens with a paddletail on a teaser in deeper water. Glad I bought the 100 pack, and will definitely try for fluke as well. Good Stuff.
Wow - thanks for sharing that.
I’ve used a pretty sharp jigging action for weakfish. It’s interesting to see you do the slow lift.
Can use a slower jigging method for a lot of fish. Also the conditions play a factor and how active the fish are. Sometimes a longer pause and slower retrieve then sometimes a shorter pause with a fast retrieve. It's good to try fast moderate and slow retrieves to see what fish react best to.
Right hand all the way baby on the caster - Fresh or Saltwater. Just works and feels better- at least for me.
TAKE ME FISHING JOHN
Use to catch big Weakfish in Oyster Virginia area in the seventies on clams, the size your catching, but those days are gone now unfortunately.
For righties on a bait caster handle is on the right on a spinning reel handle is on the left... NYC
I can't but a bluefish yet this year 😂. And I've been looking 😂😆😂. I like to load up for shark bait but the 3xs I have tried I couldn't find anything. I'm about to take a road trip up your way
Keep up the fighting spirit. my friend. ANGLERsolo is here to monitor the video😊👍👍
Hey John great video as usual ! Would month of May be a better time to go to the sound for bluefish versus summer and fall
They're so unpredictable. I'm thinking late september early october.
Apologies John if you've already gotten this question, but what are you using to mount your second camera?
I havent caught a good weakfish in about 2 decades. Once or twice a year i get into a blitz of 8-14" weakfish where i catch like 2 dozen fish in less than 30 mins. Then they just disappear
John, the Dark Matter pencil popper link is not in the show more list. What size, 4 3/4, 6" or 6 3/4 size were you using? Thank you
I added the link. Thanks for the heads-up.
Awesome squeteague video. Those were the size we caught when I was a kid in the mid-seventies.
What kind of spinning rod is that
Nice!!! I've asked you in the past.. what do you think... Any chance it'll work for fluke?
I'm not optimistic that it will beat gulp for fluke, but I'll give it a fair chance.
Just curious, have you tried any of the NLBN jigs? (No Live Bait Needed)
Have not.
how does weakfish taste?
Hello John, Im wondering about your trolling motor setup. Shaft length, model, 24v?, and amp rating on the batterys. Thank you
60'', 24V, I linked to the battery I use in the vid description.
Always LOL when people say the handle for a baitcaster should be on the left side for a righty. They are probably the same ones that hold the spinning rod upside down and reel backwards! Grew up in Jersey doing this same fishing out of Sandy Hook and Point Pleasant and I remember those days. Good to see fish that size again.
No, I said so. I work all my reels with left hand.
Your skillful hand is the one operating the rod. If you are not ABNORMAL. LOL...
I don't think so. A casting reel with the handle on the left side was designed to be cranked with your left hand. Whichever way you feel comfortable with is fine.
I was on a party boat recently, and watched some jasper who rented a spinning combo, then held it upside down, cranked it backwards until he unscrewed the handle and dropped it in the ocean.
Watching the people who put the spinning reel handle on the right side drives me nuts because they have to keep switching hands to do anything.
That's the same thing that always drove me nuts with the old conventional reels.
@@davidbulanowski1091 I tottaly agree.!!!!👍👍
north or south shore ?
Where are you fishing
How do these results compare to the SS Alabama Leprechaun Jerk Shad you used last year?
These worked better. Maybe it's the profile since the weaks are spitting shrimp.
Your using 10lb on the casting rod? What lb test are you using on the spinning rods?
20 because those are striper rods.
I bet a zman diesel minnow teaser would out fish the salt strong teaser
I noticed that you don’t tip your diamond jigs, is doing that a mistake ? Thanks.
No need to.
how deep are those weakfish staying in?
40-60 mostly
Did you test a scented Salt Strong Paddle tail Vs. an un scented ?
Nope. I kept it scented.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing so how do you (we) definitively know that it wasn’t the scent alone that out performed GULP. I’d be interested to see a test of a scented Vs unscented Salt Strong paddletail.
If it's any consolation...... I used the Dr. Juice on zoom fluke jerk shads along with several others fishing on a dock, and have seen the scented zooms cull more fish. Not sure if the Salt Strong lures would fare any differently but I am starting to be a bit more optimistic on the scent
@@MichaelP0418 scent is definitely an advantage (& I use both Pro-Cure & Mr. Juice scents often). My question is was the scented Salt Strong plastic more effective because of the Mr. Juice being applied or is Mr. Juice more effective than GULP when applied to any plastic ? If so, than the test was between GULP & Mr. Juice and not between GULP and the Salt Strong plastic.
Sometimes I see that the guides on your rod are not aligned straight...any particular reason or advantage?
Google "spiral wrapped rod". It reduces torque and is very comfortable. Many higher quality rods are made this way these days.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing thanks john
I tried the offer for the scent, funny it kept saying my CC was not accepted...... Yet J&H took that card 30 minutes later.......
🎣🤙🏼
What kind Dr Juice is it Shrimp? Dr Juice makes a lot of different ones?
It's whatever the salt strong stuff is. I didn't know there were different types.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Cabela's/Bass Pro has a different types for different fish.
What state were you in?
NY
@@JohnSkinnerFishing should have known it was further north. Because of the size of those blues. We have them that size but not that regularly.
The tax man strikes up north
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Saltwater: left handed spinning gear, right handed bait casting gear. Same for fresh water.
Tax man 😎
I want to Buy your Rod and Reel

is it too early for fluke from the beach in Central NJ?
Not sure about ocean beaches, but the bays should have them.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing TY John.. I'm in Long Branch.. Stripers are hitting but not so on Fluke.
I never believe that whole thing about the weakfish having week mouths The only thing the skin inside their mouth is actually like paper thin but if you’re going to hook them, it’s going to be in the lip. Not the skin in the mouth
Agreed. The weak mouth thing is overstated.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing tell that to halkis
Poor week fish maybe that’s why they are called week fish
I don't like the Salt Strong people "offering" all the other stuff. The introductory price of the fishing lures is nice, but I don't like that it says price per month "cancel any time." The Mystery Tackle box group has ruined me. You order once and get stuff month after month. The canceling process is a real pain. Your name is gold. Don't tarnish it with online gimmick sales groups.
Deer hunters wear rubber boots because they don't hold scent, when you put anything on rubber or plastic the minute it hits the water the oil or scent washes off, unless a scent is put in melted plastic and poured into a mold ....this scent stuff in my opinion is bogus...this isn't only my opinion but pro bass anglers have proven this too....
I think it depends on species. I'm sold on it with Gulp when fluke fishing. Still not sure about these weakfish or Florida redfish, but I figure it can't hurt.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing 10 4.....
Why don’t you wanna catch bluefish? They’re way cooler than striper or weakfish and they fight harder
Hey! You calling me old because I caught big gray trout when I started saltwater fish 😮 💾
I need a Bud Light after that.
Thanks JOHN !!!!
Bud light
@fredhammer6413 🤦🏻🤢🌈 lol smh
No.
