I made a slightly crude plywood version of this and managed to catch at least 6 field mice from my workshop. I put in a very small magnetic under the base of the ramp which makes the ramp drop without warning. This stops mice "feeling" for the balance point
I love how you release the native mice. A super effective trap that doesn’t use poison and give the option of a live or kill trap? Amazing. I also love how you feed the killed mice to other animals. Helping the local wildlife!
I bought the flip n slide for my RV that was sitting idle all winter. It caught 23 mice (I live in the country). This is by far the best trap I have ever used.
The way you always take care to mention how you don’t want your pet mice being harmed, so you’ll be placing in some cloth to cushion the drop reminds me so much of the time Mr. Rogers received a letter from a blind kid who was worried he was forgetting to feed his fish, so he always made sure to say he was feeding the fish when he did so. It’s a lovely little bit of kindness!
Yes, but those are his pet mice. The wild ones drown in creosote in the bucket. (Not). My kids loved Mr. Rogers. So calm. Candid Camera once tried to trick him into getting angry. They failed. He was so real.
I bought one of these. It is the best mouse trap ever. The mice never get the bait and it resets itself. I just used peanut butter. . If you decide you don’t need it for a while and you put it away, be sure you clean the bait off of it and don’t leave it set up ready to catch mice. Lol. I put mine away, I just took the little ladder off and set it in the shed. Didn’t mess with it for months. Next time I checked there was three decayed rats in it. Decomposing. Yea, very nasty.
@@luvluvluvluvcats the man making the video is adding water to the buckets to kill them = drowning. Is the guy commenting on this sarcastically perhaps?
A sound dampener needs to be added. The other mouse will not get scared away while the plate bounces back and makes a sound and also will help in reducing the over bounces. A simple cloth-like material would do the trick.
I love how you include some caveats at the end regarding large rats, squirrels, and rascally mice. Some people will say definitively that something is "perfect" so I'm glad you disclosed the exceptions. I got mine and hope to catch any that find their way into my garage!
Make sure to put some water in the bucket so that they would drown and don't ever let any of them go into the woods or into somebody else's neighborhood like those idiots! We need to get rid of them, not let them multiply and expand their ranges!
@@grandwonder5858 the only ones he lets go are the native mice. Any invasive/house mice he catches he just kills with CO2, since they would be destructive if released
@@tabs41 CO2 is a more humane and discerning way to take care of the mice than drowning them, if you care about the mice and their impact on the ecosystem.
It would somewhat help. Another factor that effected the spread was how unhygienic people were back then. So while the trap would also effect the fleas that were being carried by the rats , the plague would still be an issue.
Hi Shawn! Mate that's gotta be one of, if not the best mouse catcher ever! One possible enhancement - stick some foam tape or something similar under the yellow lid to quieten the seesaw part from making a bang noise when it swings back up. The clang noise seems to scare off a few of the other mice a little. One or two people said the sound was a little annoying late at night as well. Also, could the entrance be made a bit bigger so that larger rats could fit in?
As far as completely passive single moving part contraptions go, this one did surprisingly well. For the mice that learned balance, this trap could use a magnetic retention so once mice pass the tipping point and the magnet lets go, there is no turning back until the mouse drops off.
I have been battling a smart guy for a few weeks now. He managed to get free from a glue trap and hasn't fallen for it twice. I got one of these based off this video, set it up and got them. It took a few days for them to take the bait but they finally fell for it. Thanks for the recommendation!
Think that we've got a more crafty mouse. We suspect that it whipped its tail against the side of the spring traps, setting them off, then leisurely licked off the bait.
The trap may work for mice in a controlled environment. I did not catch a single mouse in an outdoor environment. There was evidence of it not working as the peanut butter was eaten clean without a catch. I did catch a few chipmunks until the plank warped from heat and they would no longer walk it. Also, rodents began chewing through the lid to eat the peanut butter from the top.
these are the best kind of mouse traps. Don't need power, don't require to be re-set, work unattended, and what is more important, are able to catch multiple mice.
I bought this trap two years ago. It did great. This year we got eight mice in one night. So far this winter season (2022-23) we’ve caught 25 mice. It works wonderfully.
@@ICEknightnine no you see it in a lot of other videos that rats usually do not fall for the same trap twice and if they see another rat get trapped they'll be extra careful and usually will stay away. Mice just seem to pile themselves on and on with no regard to what just happened to a fellow mouse.
Yeah, it’s what makes them so hard to get rid of. When we’ve had rat problems we’ve never caught more that 2 on any kind of trap because they learn how to avoid them. They’ve tripped snap trips without being caught, flipped over glue traps, and just avoided those spinner traps over similar buckets. Guess I’ll have to try this one next.
@@TheDevilsbard i think the best would be electrocution. To have a really really large board llaced jn a rokm the rats frequent that shocks them dead when stepped on. Since the board would be very large, I'm guessing the rags won't stay away from jt like they would from a small trap
There was this video of a rat using a stick to set off a snap trap on youtube. I live in the city and a rat got in during lockdown. It somehow managed to eat off the snap trap I bought. We finally caught it using a cage trap after leaving the trap unset for 3 days. Set it free in front of 3 useless cats which couldn't even catch it.
I suspect you might be able to improve the performance (in live trap mode) slightly by doing 2 things: - Put something on the lid to quiet the sound when the flip resets so they don't get scared off, like some rubber tape where the flip hits - Put a couple tiny slits near the bottom of the bucket and a bit of food in there so trapped mice act like a "stool pidgeon" and attract more (live mice inside with food makes it seem safer to new mice coming in)
@@karmaticwolf6026 mice curiosity. They'd see one of their own luxuriously staying in there surrounded by food and naturally look for a way in. The certainty in knowing the presence of other mice in the bucket makes them less hesitant in going in.
@@Indium111 Both channels are weirdly interesting... and they must attract some of the same viewers because after making my comment I noticed some other people had already voiced a thought similar to mine. A strange building appears overnight, with mousetraps stuck under the roof, held in place by peanut butter. One day later, Mr. Woods and the building have mysteriously disappeared. The super raccoons eat very well that night.
In the middle of the night, Shawn's disrupted sleep abruptly came to an end. Gasping for air, covered in sweat, his recurring nightmares struck him again. Angered but not yet reassured, he reached for the lightswitch on his nightstand in a desperate attempt to appease the burning, pounding sensation that just wouldn't leave his chest. A weak glow lit the room, just enough to see it: the outlined figure of the Four-Footer, King of all Rats, holding a Desert Eagle.
After watching several hours of videos, finally decided to get this one & MouseX, and a few Victor’s Electronic mousetraps (not set up yet). Within a couple days I didn’t have mouse poo on my counters, and the bucket had several dead mice (I’m doing the kill version since I’m not going to transport mice 2 miles away to release, and can’t go far enough away from the house to keep them from coming back.) THANK YOU! I highly recommend this method.
Contrary to popular belief Tom and Jerry are actually best friends, Tom only pretends to hate Jerry because if he doesn't his owner will replace him with a cat that will actually kill Jerry
nice idea. Personally I'd add a sponge like material on specific gaps to supress the hitting noise, so the mice are less afraid. But after all it's a nice idea.
Personally you would have never thought about it because it would have been invented already or you would have invented it already so personally you would have never done nothing
The "flip-floor" needs a damper, so that, when it drops and snaps back into place, there is no clicking sound that could scare away some of the rodents. Also, the trap door could be more stable at the middle, so that the mouse will go completely towards the tip, before gravity takes it down. A few mice seemed to find the perfect balancing point where they would not fall. A delayed drop, along with a rubber damper to make it silent, perhaps?
It will have to be both taller and deeper for rats, as they are much longer and bottom heavy than mice. The lid and trapdoor dimensions will need to be scaled up at least 2x otherwise heavy bum + long reach neck = trap defeat. That big rat could reach right in whilst still partially stood on the ranp!
That trap seems to have the advantage of not letting the rodents see down into the bucket, and giving them a sheltered-looking area to get trapped in. Maybe a magnet would help catch the smarter mice. The raccoons and vultures should be offering a commission to anyone who buys this trap.

Imagine being those racoons. Scavenging for food when you stumble upon a pile of presoaked meat things. You're approaching the gift from heaven when the surreal nature of the scene hits you. These mice were drowned, a lot of mice were drowned, in the middle of a field. What did this? WHY? That's some slender man nonsense there. Humans are eldritch horrors to mice.

Wow! Easy set up. You dont have to drill any holes or anything. I love how it covers the whole top of the bucket so once the mouse falls down there, there is no other way for it to jump out!
Racoons and a Vulture, wow. I recently discovered my Moms apartment is infested. Shes been in a nursing home so I setup some snap traps. Not sure how many yet. I will try this next
Mouse #31 shows the usefulness of the roof, no place to jump to freedom. This is a brilliant design! I like the slow tilt that doesn’t spook the mouse.
For people asking about the ramp, my guess is that he was mostly using taller buckets than the trap's ramp is designed for. He has had that issue in the past where a trap provides a ramp for a shorter bucket and he uses a tall bucket. So he adds his own ramp to fit the bucket. Something I haven't seen others mention that likely makes this an amazing trap is that the entire top is covered and could even be fairly sealed to prevent smells from escaping. Some of the buckets didn't seem like a perfect fit, but something could be used around the edge to seal it better. I don't know if adding something to stop the sound would end up leaving a small gap between the ramp and the lid and reducing the effectiveness of keeping in smells.
Those moving parts are going to allow smells to escape anyway. Even if one managed to perfectly seal it, could you imagine if a homeowner forgot to check on the trap and came back to find a bloated bucket about to explode? Haha. Masking smells is an excellent idea for a trap like this being used in a domestic setting, but I think that's better served by any number of household fragrances available for purchase already.
Ordered one of these on Amazon and it’s showing it not shipping for a couple weeks. Just a heads up to anyone wanting one. Maybe this video pumped up the sales and they have to play catch-up lol!

Hi Shawn! Mate that's gotta be one of, if not the best mouse catcher ever! One possible enhancement - stick some foam tape or something similar under the yellow lid to quieten the seesaw part from making a bang noise when it swings back up. As far as completely passive single moving part contraptions go, this one did surprisingly well. For the mice that learned balance, this trap could use a magnetic retention so once mice pass the tipping point and the magnet lets go, there is no turning back until the mouse drops off.
That magnet would prevent the trap from resetting.
I think a simpler solution would be to put a slippery material like Teflon on the board

I suspect you might be able to improve the performance (in live trap mode) slightly by doing 2 things:
- Put something on the lid to quiet the sound when the flip resets so they don't get scared off, like some rubber tape where the flip hits
- Put a couple tiny slits near the bottom of the bucket and a bit of food in there so trapped mice act like a "stool pidgeon" and attract more (live mice inside with food makes it seem safer to new mice coming in)
Why would you need slits at the bottom?

The "flip-floor" needs a damper, so that, when it drops and snaps back into place, there is no clicking sound that could scare away some of the rodents. Also, the trap door could be more stable at the middle, so that the mouse will go completely towards the tip, before gravity takes it down. A few mice seemed to find the perfect balancing point where they would not fall. A delayed drop, along with a rubber damper to make it silent, perhaps?
Good idea. Some foam weatherstripping tape ought to do the trick as a damper.
The makers should either increase the height of the dome or make the height adjustable to allow catching rats and other larger pest.
@@Danbotology... that sounded hilarious. Good idea though. I got a mental picture of the rat.
Rats are big enough to knock over the bucket or climb out again. Rats are brutal.
That trap seems to have the advantage of not letting the rodents see down into the bucket, and giving them a sheltered-looking area to get trapped in. Maybe a magnet would help catch the smarter mice. The raccoons and vultures should be offering a commission to anyone who buys this trap.
You could probably alter the center of gravity slightly outward by adding some weights under the other side of the flapper. Then it would tip later.
