That is remarkably easy to answer, because there are no native or non-invasive rat species in New Zealand. What he erroneously calls a "native" rat has in fact existed in New Zealand for less than 1000 years, because they were brought there as, you guessed it, an invasive species (implicated in the extinction of native bird species whose eggs they fed on) by the Polynesian mariners who became the ancestors of the Maori. There are no native land mammals on New Zealand, with the sole exception of bats, whose ancestors were able to fly there. Every other mammal was introduced by humans, is therefore non-native, and usually invasive.

9:03 calling that poor scared animal, an ‘aggressive rat’ is far from true. The poor thing is trying to get away and you have it trapped. At most it wants to scare you off because you keep coming at it. There’s a huge difference between fending off an attacker trying to get at it and being actively aggressive.
I have a wild Norway rat, like these wild ones. Had him since he was 2 weeks old, he was on deaths door, very lethargic. He is an absolute amazing pet. Very social and loving. I did have a pet rat as his brother (bought after I had him for a month) and he unfortunately passed away already though they were close in age. My wild one was vetted and both were neutered. Behavior is a bit different than the domestic one. Also oddly enough, he is cleaner, has designated areas for defecating, whereas the domestic one didn't. But still, knows who his 'mother' is and as I said loving. Did not watch the kill trap part obviously. Nope.
Pretty sure you've traumatized Judas...He's gunna have little rodent PSTD for the remainder of his rat years. Endless squeeky little therapy sessions where he learns to love himself again...He blames himself for the death of his friend who came to help him. The rat life chose HIM, ya know? Not an easy life.
I don't live where there's rats (as far as I know) but I thoroughly enjoy your videos. The only thing I'm apprehensive about for immediate-kill traps is if the species is native.
Awesome thanks for the idea Shawn. I was just about to go get some traps and knowing that I will have better results with a Judas rat is both hilarious and helpful. Others are welcome to answer too, I would appreciate being able to pick up some traps in person here in the states (FL) or at least somewhere other than amazon. Thanks!

That metal trap looks to have some serious snap factor! Watch your hands, that’s more than a break!
Mr wild rat is about to be traumatized when he sees his buddy get turned into a rat sandwich 😂

Wow, that bait rat must have had quite the shock! 😂🐀 It's fascinating to see innovative methods like the Judas Rat Trap being used to control invasive rat populations. The unexpected twist definitely adds an element of surprise. Keep up the intriguing content, Mousetrap Monday! 🪤🐭👏
Heroic fight with this viscous rodent! Well done!
Happy rat catching, all the way from Tasmania!!!!!
I am sure that I am not the only one who got a little nervous, watching you set that trap!
That rat in the end was so flat but I'm surprised such a strong trap didn't just... explode the rat instead.
Such a fitting name for the trap. It's definitely one of the smarter traps I've seen
Got to be the most thoughtful insight of humans vs rats..
Nope.
That awful little bugger got the message after witnessing that!
Hey! He's wearing gloves! Finally!
I don't live where there's rats (as far as I know) but I thoroughly enjoy your videos. The only thing I'm apprehensive about for immediate-kill traps is if the species is native.
"Ask not for whom the trap snaps, for the trap snaps for thee." *cue intro riff* 😂
Awesome thanks for the idea Shawn. I was just about to go get some traps and knowing that I will have better results with a Judas rat is both hilarious and helpful. If you happen to notice this comment, where would you recommend procuring such a live catch trap as you have shown here and what brand is it? Others are welcome to answer too, I would appreciate being able to pick up some traps in person here in the states (FL) or at least somewhere other than amazon. Thanks!
Try ace hardware
On its web site, Havahart lists a bunch of retailers that carry their traps.
pack rat was too stunned to believe he was actually about to be let go 😂
from what i understand, rats and mice have no love lost about seeing a dead brother . they will happily eat the left overs bait with there dead cousin right next to them . an other great show Shawn . yes . slow down and don’t get burned out 👍🏼
And I had a few were they ate their cousin in the trap
That poor rat is going to have trauma after watching it’s friends die
dude for the love of god get a small animal grabber, you don't need to be catching anything from these guys WHEN they eventually bite you.
Rats don't usually make audible sounds. That rat was very angry and afraid in the trap.
Rats are incredibly vocal 😂
@@chubbrock659 True, but usually they vocalize above the human-audible range.
@@kennyholmes5196 mmmm...dont think so. they make a lot of audible sounds. go look up joseph carter the mink man and watch his ratting videos. they are extremely noisy.
Hi from NZ :) Sean, we have a project here called Predator Free 2050. We are trying to remove all rats, stoats and possums (all introduced species decimating our native wildlife) by 2050. It's a very very ambitious goal. But one we're super excited about. DOC stands for Department of Conservation.
7:00 the wild rat was not happy with your slap though
