6:06 Love the mouse who just barely escapes from the Walk the Plank then he's like, "There's still peanut butter there. That probably won't happen again..." and walks right back into the trap. I notice another mouse later does the same thing with the Flip n Slide.
If I had to make a wild guess as to why the flip & slide is so darn good even above other traps that are so similar especially mechanically, I would say maybe the mouse thinks it's going into a cave. The more safe a mouse thinks a place is, the more likely they'll walk on it and get dunked. Great comparison video! Thank you!
@@firebreaker2262 in one of the catches, the mouse quickly managed to run back out and restore the balance but the trap got it the second time because mice have really bad memories
Watching the mice running on the wheel with one spinning round and round gave me quite the chuckle. Thanks again for all the hard work you do as well as providing great information.
What I like about it is you think 'why are they enjoying it so much?' and then you realise you are enjoying watching them so why wouldn't it be fun. Like a dog chasing it's tail.
Yes! It's nice to see that they have a safe, fun place to land while they wait for you to rescue them. Food, water, bedding, wheel... this is kindness.
I 100% feel that Shawn Woods footage of mouse trap performance has single handedly improved the designs on the market. The simplicity and self reseting nature of the rolling log trap shown years ago made the market shift more towards drop traps. And then the video of how mice escape them led to the walk the plank and now the flip n side each of which further refined the idea. Honestly, it deserves to be the best seller bucket mouse trap. Its design is impeccable.
The mill trap has been forgotten for a while until he made a video about it and now its selling on amazon. You couldn't find it anywhere until then so yes he did greatly improve the trap market.
All those traps worked great if mice engaged with them. Shawn noted the rolling traps put mice on alert because of their motion, but they may have also made mice wary because of the round walking surface. The mice also seemed to prefer walking into cover; the Flip N Slide had a roof over the entire bait area, the rolling log had no cover. The paddle trap had a bit of cover to the sides but none above the mouse. The walk the plank traps individually had no cover, but more of the mice seemed to walk out on the lower plank, which got a bit of shade from the higher plank across from it. At this rate, Shawn's going to run out of mice to catch, and he'll have to change his channel to Flytrap Monday.
There's also something curious about the Flip'n'Slide. The mice don't seem to notice that the surface is tilting. Normally if any movement happens the mouse gets startled and runs or jumps away, but in this case it somehow fails to notice the floor is tilting, until it's too late. It just stands there as if nothing was happening... and then oops!
I love the little paradise you created for them. It was so fun watching them play around down there. I like the one guy who grabbed on to the outside of the play wheel and spun around and around.
But I wonder does he breed them and just let them lose at the same spot off camera? After so many vids of catching them he still has an infestation idk
@@nesnintendo9107 probably some shenanigans, but with all the food Shawn leaves in his barns it would be a attraction for rodents& varmits, plus what good would his channel be without these demos. Regardless it’s entertaining.
We've been battling the mouse dilemma in our home since we moved into it seven years ago and this is what I've learned. Mice are used in memory research because they have the capacity for quick learning and good recall. No matter what traps we've used, they all work for about a week. Then the mice learn and recall the danger of the current trap and the mice stop getting caught. If you want to catch and stop the intrusion of mice in your home, you have to be vigilante, find their entry port(s) and cut it(them) off, and rotate your trap type repeatedly until the mice are gone. Be smarter than your mice and adapt faster than them. Mice are smart and highly adaptive with memory tasks. We have to be too.
@@earthchicken2233 No they see their buddies get caught and learn how to be careful, just like squirrels do. Or they set off the trap without getting caught and learn even quicker.
@@tattooninja haven't seen them do that yet. anyway how would a mouse even know if they were in a trap like the ones in the video? wouldn't their friends want to join in?
This channel is actually giving me a lot of comfort as I wait for my traps to arrive in the next day or two. Thanks for posting these and allowing us to learn and calm down after seeing a mouse 🐭
I think the flip and slide works so well because the drop hazard is so well hidden. In comparison the log and the mill look precarious to negotiate, making the mice wary. The plank falls somewhere in the middle by this metric.
The Flip N Slide has some advantages: The roof makes mice feel safer while it stops them from jumping away. They also can't hold on to anything once they are in the "tunnel". And when it flips, the back comes up and closes the only exit.
i think the flip and slide worked because the larger area for the mouse to walk on made them feel safer and along with the covered top, even though that stops them from jumping out once it starts to articulate. the other traps had a small "walking" area.
I’ve used the Flip & Slide and I think it’s the best out of all those traps. Not only does it also catch rats, since it’s meant to go over a bucket, it prevents any mice or rats from jumping out and escaping. It’s a simple but ingenious trap. I’d recommend it. 👍
I used all but the mascall mill trap, used them in my hangar all on buckets with water so I don't need to be there every day. Like this test, the slip and slide in the best I've used. It is still catching mice with the only requirement is to add bait. Love your videos.
Rolling log was the one I thought would do the best. It proves a point, the one with the most secure surface did the best, then each one less sturdy followed.
Though i think if he had 4 of the same trap (of any variety), he still would have caught the same a number of mice, its not as if 4 rolling logs would have caught less.
This is the channel you hope you don't need, but appreciate when you do. We've been having a time this year with the mice for some reason. Thanks for all the tips and tricks!
i love this video so much! having a side-by-side comparison of the traps really puts into perspective what each does but also how well they perform under the pressure of a large scale mouse infestation. love it! keep up the good work
I wonder how much more you'd catch if you dug a hole to keep the tank in so the traps were at ground level. Mice don't like climbing up to exposed areas, which also makes me wonder if you added cover to the more open traps if they'd be more inviting to a mouse. I think that's the biggest factor for the Flip N Slide's success
Yeah, climbing isn't an issue. They climb anything, cables, drapes, anything. I think it's good that it's in an elevated position. If it was at ground level, other mice could see the other ones fall and learn to stay away from there.
6:09, I was surprised that the mouse hung on and avoided the walk the plank trap. Personally have the flip and slide, have used it to catch two mice around the house, and am a big fan. Like others have mentioned, I would like a version large enough or modified for rats.
My guess on the flip and slide trap (winner) is that it has the most flat surface on it. If you or I were choosing which to walk on, it would probably look the safest to us as well. Someone else mentioned the cave aspect with the cover...that's a good idea as well.
I think the flip N slide could be made bigger and combined with the electronic sensor walk the plank style mouse trap to successfully catch rats. The tunnel stops them from jumping away once it tips, and it would tip much quicker, only after they are all the way in the tunnel and touch the sensor. You would need one HUGE bucket for a live trap, though.
If you want to catch rats he has a video about setting up 10 rat sized snap traps screwed to a wood board and separated by small boards. He left it out with bait for a few night without the traps set, then one night set all the traps and caught 10 rats.
Yes, a rat will chew through a plastic bucket anyway. I have one in the carport a rat gnawed a big hole through. But if you put a little food there, it might stay in there til you get up in the morning to look.
What makes the Flip & Slide so great is that it's more of a trap door, in the sense that it seems like a full "floor" to the mouse and not a surface they have to balance on to avoid dropping below.
Great video! The side by side comparison really highlights the strengths and weaknesses of these trap designs, and showed the clear winner was the Genuine Flip & Slide.
This may be the best mousetrap video you've done yet, Shawn. Great job! By the way, I suspect one reason the Flip & Slide trap did so well is because the trigger area is enclosed on the sides and the top and I think that makes mice feel more comfortable; thus, they're more willing to enter into the "point of no return." I don't know if anyone will ever improve on the Flip & Slide -- it's pretty much a perfect design.
I read somewhere that mice follow the urine trail left by other mice. A good product to aid in trapping mice could be an artificial urine. You would drip some of the urine near and leading towards the trap. In your demonstration it looked like some of the mice were following a scent trail. They went straight to a trap that other mice had just visited, without investigating any of the other traps.
Very informative thank you! I thought it was too bad not to include the release at the end as for me it is the cutest and funniest part of your videos. I used to live catch deer mice at home in the winter, put them in a cage and release them in the spring. They had babies one time and it was the cutest thing in the world!
It seems like it isn't just dunk-traps vs. rolling traps. The success seems to dependent on the size/perceived stability of the walkable platform and the swiftness of the catching-motion. The bigger the platform and the faster the trigger, the better
Great to see a side by side comparison. While it may not mimic real world results using them individually, it shows what features are more effective in catching mice and how to design an even better mousetrap in the future. Love to see some rat traps in action in a similar way.
The Flip N Slide offers protection and no danger. Not only does it have the cover that appeals to a mouse's desire for protection but the whole trap is a flat surface with NO indication of any trickery or danger.
The thing is most of us would get rid of all the mice and rats for good. He only gets rid of the ones that are non native. Yes, I know his channel revolves around them but that takes more effort than I would if I had an infestation
From what I’ve gleened he is an OSU agriculture grad and a Forest Service employee. He is doing his part in preserving the eco system in Oregon’s Yamhill County.
@@chapter4travels Better to mod the content over having a dead channel. Remember, one video got deleted and pretty much sunk the channel in the search results
That only applies to live-catch traps. Must release native-american mice, must kill invasive foreign mice. Kill-traps, *all* of 'em meet their end, and God sorts 'em out.
@@chapter4travels That is not actually the case though. The native deer mice are released regardless, because they are part of the natural ecosystem, whereas the house mice are an invasive species and so are killed.
The mill trap kind of looked like it got off to a great start but once it was overtaken by the flip traps there was no catching up. Excellent video. The rolling log trap is obviously better on its own.
I purchased the Flip N Slide lid a month ago and just snapped it on a bucket that I had in the barn. I a couple of days, it captured four mice without me baiting it or installed the ramp. Great videos. Keep them coming.
2 super mice avoided the flip and slide and walk the plank once each, amazingly (ninja warrior mouse on the plank), but were over confident and got caught the 2nd time around. And yeah, the electric, larger walk the plank should definitely catch rats. I wonder if you do a best rat catching video next?
If I had to hazard a guess, I'd think that the little hood of the Flip'N'Slide trap makes the mice feel a little more secure, and it's inviting. It's sheltered, not out in the open, and when you're everything else's food, that's important.
This is one heck of a summary - Nothing like it anywhere else. For those who have watched this channel, what does he recommend as bait? I've used chocolate, peanut butter and bird seed. They've all worked, with peanut butter being the easiest to apply and stick to a surface.
The Flip and Slide trap could probably be improved with a magnet for a rapid drop, just like the Walk the Plank. We saw a mouse feel the slow tipping and withdraw to safety more than once! Adding a magnet wouldn't make it significantly more expensive, and would probably catch the wary mice. It would be just as easy to clean. Every trap was "defeated", although the mice did return to the drop style traps which caught the mice on subsequent attempts. So they weren't really defeated, just didn't get the mice immediately when triggered. The Flip and Slide trap is my new favorite, although I really like them all and was impressed how Mascall's Mill really improved upon the Rolling Log. I think I might even prefer it to Walk the Plank because of how easy it is to clean. But that's what I like about Flip and Slide, it looks as easy to clean as the Rolling Log. Couldn't be simpler, just take it apart and rinse it off. I'd spray it with a garden hose. For a thorough cleaning, wash with soap. Mascall's Mill is also easy to clean. Walk the Plank, at least the design shown, is more effective than the rolling traps but is the hardest to clean. With Flip and Slide, you get both easy cleaning and high efficacy. The big platform and cover are advantages over Walk the Plank, but the slow tipping without the magnet is a downside. Add a magnet to get the fast flip, and the new Flip and Slide Down the Plank would be the best mousetrap yet. I suggest Shawn make one himself, just by adding a small magnet and another magnet or piece of metal to keep the magnets together until the mouse gets far enough into the trap to break the magnets apart, resulting in a rapid "plank drop" that will probably get all, or almost all, of the mice as soon as they trip it. One only needs a magnet or two (even a refrigerator magnet and a piece of iron!) glued or taped to the trap to test the idea.
I purchased the RENNIE Flip n Slide on Shawn's recommendation last year. The total, at the end of the mousing season, was 58 mice. I've tried other methods, but RENNIE Flip and Slide is amazing!! If you have a mouse issue, this is the trap for you. 中国?哦,你是说台湾西部
I literally L O L every time I see these little critters walk the plank. Also, I was impressed on how quickly the mice learned to use the running wheel Once they got into the Rodent Resort.
FLIP & SLIDE will do best. The setup is wonderful. I had to watch hundreds of video to get where Shawn got in minutes, with probably lifetime of creating videos. GREAT JOB!
The Mascall mill trap might have done a little better if the axle extended the full width of the bucket, allowing mice to approach from either side like they could with the rolling log and walk-the-plank traps.
There is something soothing about watching such effective mousetraps. I think all these traps would catch rats if they were scaled up. This particular flip and slide is just too small.
Technically the "flip and slide" is exactly the same as the "walk the plank". It's just visually a bit different, but from mechanical perspective they are identical. No wonder they perform similarly.
SALE ALERT! Did I somehow miss this in the video??!? Rinne has a sale underway for the Flip'n'Slide traps right now. 43% off (~$20 per trap) and shipped free. Be sure you use Shawn's affiliate link in the video description! Thanks Shawn, I just ordered one!! 🐭☠
I just noticed that the Amazon affiliate link has the same pricing at the moment, and you save an extra buck per trap if you buy a two-pack IIRC, shipping was also free there if you hit $25 for your order.
The way the traps kept switching places (whilst the labels didn't keep pace!) _WAS_ a trifle confusing, but it was a very interesting comparison, nonetheless! Before the test began, I had posited the "Flip & Slide" to be *"The Champion!" - which it actually WAS!* 😁 (However, _my_ choice for *2nd-best* was the "Rolling Log," which ended in *LAST PLACE!* 😥 ) Thank you for yet another fascinating, instructive, _AND_ selectively humanitarian video! I *_THOROUGHLY_* approve of your differentiation 'twixt "native" and "non-native" species. *WELL DONE, SHAWN!* 😅👍
The fish tank looks like a lot of work to maintain. Perhaps these traps could be located separately on a semi permanent basis if the mice fell into separate container that would allow it to be removed and emptied in rotation without having to move the trap itself.

Kill-traps, *all* of 'em meet their end, and God sorts 'em out.
and he needs a constant supply so I am 99% sure he lets them go close to his buildings so he has a ready supply for the videos.
Another possible advantage to the flip n slide is that it may be more jump-out-proof, since it covers the top of the bucket.
I purchased the Flip N Slide lid a month ago and just snapped it on a bucket that I had in the barn. I a couple of days, it captured four mice without me baiting it or installed the ramp. Great videos. Keep them coming.
So it is proven: The best mouse trap ever has four entrances!
“I have over 2,000 mouse traps” well that’s not something you hear everyday. 😂
Outstanding mousetraps! I can’t wait to see them in action again. 👍👍👍
This is one heck of a summary - Nothing like it anywhere else.
For those who have watched this channel, what does he recommend as bait? I've used chocolate, peanut butter and bird seed.
They've all worked, with peanut butter being the easiest to apply and stick to a surface.
Only you Shawn would think this combo up. Very entertaining for sure. Please keep the videos coming. Thanks so much!!!
the flip n slide is amazing! I have caught over a 100 mice in mine. thanks for making this video!
Great competition and video. What a great idea of mice paradise and your comparison setup. Fantastic!
Very well done comparison and great video and editing. I was mesmerized. Thanks, Shawn.
I was glued to this video. Best one yet Shawn.
Catching the mice in these tanks is the coolest work around I've seen from a UA-camr fighting UA-cam's ambiguous rules.
Cool channel and host
The world's pre-eminent mouse trap expert. We are in the presence of greatness, folks!
Been of a viewer of you Shawn for many years now, always love seeing you set up traps and catching pest rodents.
This video was so beyond satisfying. I could watch it again and again. I would watch a full video of the mice playing in the mouse paradise you built.
As always Shawn, gloves Shawn, gloves. Protect yourself and your family.
Agreed, have no clue why he doesn't use gloves....
@@9and7 rats and mice are actually very clean. They clean themselves regularly. The only bad things is parasites and their poop lol.
@@Godviahh Yes we know, t hat's why you should wear gloves.
I literally L O L every time I see these little critters walk the plank. Also, I was impressed on how quickly the mice learned to use the running wheel Once they got into the Rodent Resort.
This monstrosity is the final boss of mouse traps
I never knew Mouse Trap ASMR was a thing until today ❤
This episode was like the "Project Farm" of mouse traps. :)
After seeing this video I’ve ordered the Rinne unit from their website using your link…can’t wait to try it!
Love my flip n trap. I need to buy more. I am impressed with your fish tank trap design. Shawn you're a genius. 👍
8:55 shows why the rolling log isnt good
That’s hilarious how they’ve been caught and instead of panicking and looking for an escape they just go for a run on the wheel 🤣
If you caught a rat, they would eat the mice.
Great video
Great video! Any chance of doing a best RAT trap one? Thanks for the great content!
That B-Roll of how the mouse trap works over talking about the trap is a nice touch.
Rodents prefer to hide . The top lid of the Flip & Slide plus the dunk plank makes it too effective of a trap 😆
I think you inadvertently boosted the walk the plank design by having 2 of them. That makes the flip and slides win even more impressive.
There is something soothing about watching such effective mousetraps. I think all these traps would catch rats if they were scaled up. This particular flip and slide is just too small.
The mouse who escaped the plank only to return and fall!
This is weird but seriously works for the algorithm
They need a rat version. A rat version could do both mice and rat)..
@@garrettstevensen2467 I agree, but it might need a bigger/deeper bucket. Too bad large trash cans aren't as standardized as 5 gallon buckets.
@@floobertuber 7 Gallon buckets are the same width as 5 Gallon buckets, except they are taller. Lids are interchangeable.
@@garrettstevensen2467 Interesting. I didn't even know there WERE 7-gallon buckets.
Who else noticed the mouse come out of the rollling log trap at 4:46 only to fall into the other trap?
Very well done Mr. Shawn
I really appreciate that you changed the location of the traps to attempt to cancel location preference bias.
The way the traps kept switching places (whilst the labels didn't keep pace!) _WAS_ a trifle confusing, but it was a very interesting comparison, nonetheless!
Before the test began, I had posited the "Flip & Slide" to be *"The Champion!" - which it actually WAS!* 😁 (However, _my_ choice for *2nd-best* was the "Rolling Log," which ended in *LAST PLACE!* 😥 )
Thank you for yet another fascinating, instructive, _AND_ selectively humanitarian video! I *_THOROUGHLY_* approve of your differentiation 'twixt "native" and "non-native" species.
*WELL DONE, SHAWN!* 😅👍

Why’d you go back bro 😂😂
The fish tank looks like a lot of work to maintain. Perhaps these traps could be located separately on a semi permanent basis if the mice fell into separate container that would allow it to be removed and emptied in rotation without having to move the trap itself.
Forget fossil fuels. We should be harnessing the power of wild mice running on hamster wheels
That will be a huge buffet at the beaver pond. Lol
You sold me on the Flip n Slide, Shawn. Just ordered a 2 pack from the Rinne website. Thanks for the great vids.
I really like the flip and slide trap I use it I am on the lookout for a larger version some rats have the system figured out.
Whether I'm watching a mouse trap video or a Rust trap video, its just so satisfying.
Great video! TONS of action showing the distinct differences in those four traps. Would definitely go with your recommendations.
These are way more interesting than the stuff YT usually sends me! Keep it up!
