Yes, definitely a bad idea. Wasn't Genghis Khan's father killed by accepting food that was poisoned. Unfortunately, he had no choice, as it would have been an enormous insult if he hadn't eaten the food, showing lack of trust in his Tatar hosts.

This is why I hate the notion that after the fall of Rome, Western Europe was plunged into a "dark age" its so disgusting inaccurate and grossly oversimplifies the several states, kings, people, beliefs, innovations into a "Dark Age" Its also so annoying because my history teachers wouldnt talk about anything in Europe from 476-1000 and simply disregard it as the "Dark Ages"

King Theodoric's problem with Boethius was political, not personal. It stemmed from the latter supporting the wrong successor. See THE GOTHS by Heather.
The key thing Belisarius did was not taking Rome, which was fairly straightforward, but taking the capital at swampy Ravenna, which was quite difficult, and had also been difficult for Theodoric when he took it from Odoacer.

  • @kaloarepo288
    @kaloarepo288 6 років тому +21

Theodoric made his capital at Ravenna -he had some Arian churches built there that were subsequently made into catholic churches full of stunning mosaics.Theodoric's tomb is surmounted by a huge monolith which would have been quite a feat to construct.Theodoric had the great philosopher Boethius executed for treason.

I read that the saxons and Allemani had that same east west split where the western ones were kinda romanized and the eastern ones were kinda hunnicized, so like the Saxons who came Britain were the Roman half and the ones who were conquered by charlemagne a few hundred years later were a rump state of atillas empire.

One thing to add to this. The plague of Justinean hit the Italian peninsula late in this war. It may have played a role in depopulating the cities, or prevented their repopulation and rebuilding after the war. At any rate, the collapse of city culture in Italy dates from this time period and would take half a millennium to recover.

Theodoric, apart from the last few years of his reign, was a very good ruler in Italy. He restored much of the old Roman infrastructure that had been neglected and was very respectful of Roman culture. Pity that Justinian had to wreck the Ostrogothic Kingdom, as it was a pretty good place to live under Theodoric.

Comes out of no where and wipes the floor with the romans all the while causing defections through acts of clemency and honor. Ends up cresting his own navy and until basses and his fully funded mercenaries arrive..totilla basically had a string of perfect plays. He died in battle and his successor teias only had a few men left for a last stand.

The best narrative history for this period is probably J.B. Bury's History of the Later Roman Empire. There really aren't too many comprehensive or interesting primary sources which cover this topic well. Procopius' account of the Gothic War covers the end of the period and Jordanes has some fanciful ideas, based partly on the contemporary writings of Cassiodorus. As for authors writing in Ostrogothic Italy, Boethius is always a good read, but his work is philosophy more than history.

Goths retained the nobility and infrastructure for the most part so long as the tribute was paid. So it left Italy is a semi autonomous state while affording protection from other tribes. Byzantines came in and created instability while not respecting the nobles those "fellow Romans" and that created resentment they stopped viewing thw east Roman's as brothers ever since then.

Theodoric had essentially got permission from Zeno to invade Italy, kick out Odoacer and rule as the Rex Italiae. He saw himself and the Ostrogoths as being the protectors of Roman culture and laws and had quasi-Roman authority from Zeno. Whilst he didn't call himself the emperor, he did wear the imperial purple. He also restored quite significant powers to the Roman Senate.

Some interesting comments! Narses the eunuch general was jealous of Belisarius. Narses ran a vindictive campaign against Belisarius back in Constantinople. I disagree with you on Belisarius' conduct in the war across Italy, in my opinion he won over the Italian people and this was recorded in the Wars of Justinian by Precopius. I also made a video about this here-ua-cam.com/video/P5jjkunYLJo/v-deo.html Best wishes in the continued exploration of this fascinating and dynamic period.

From the primeval and before the arrival and settlement of
the Greek in Sicily, etc. before the arrival of the Romans and Gauls and their
countries, and so on. he lived in almost all of today's Italy, as the roots and
the only serbian (Slavs) people, in the form of these tribes:
Gornići, Aequi Volani, Labici, Volsci, Raeci, Ombrici,
Marubii, Aurunci, Opici, Salentini, Etrusci, Venetani,…
The first perpetrators and settlers of the Serbian tribes living in Italy
were also the same Semi Ethiopians, or Greeks, with their settlements in Sicily
and the rest of Italy, etc. and then Cartagens goes after them. The Greeks were
at that time for 1000 years. before Christ, they were not only all the
gatherings of Italy, Sicily, etc. but they went deeply into Italy and there,
which they subjugated, and which, again, trampled on by the resident Serbian
    tribes, lived, as usual everywhere, only at the expense of the prisoners;
because the Greeks never fluttered or bathed, nor did they do anything else,
played singing, played, acted, acted in their choirs, they were taken away from
the aliens, but from each other, and even went to it is completely eradicated.
It could not have happened elsewhere in the remains of wild African and
Assyrian soldiers, who were probably made up of various nations. The rest were
all worked and produced by various Serbian tribes as slaves.
By studying the Roman records, we find: Romula with her
Ramnezise people, as a soldier, as a homeless person, as a robber, as a single
and single, as a man and without faith, land, property, state, house, and
housing, with a hundred people of her nationality representatives of future
generations and nations Roman, with 1 thousand horsemen and 10,000 pedestrian
and raised Rome, founded and raised the Roman state.
In order to be relieved, that in order to become what he was
doing, what he was going to do, and not with his Ramnezis, with his 100
representatives of future generous families or military chiefs of Egypt, with
his 1,000 horsemen and 10,000 pedestrians, he opened the door robbers, thieves,
homeless people, and all non-Serbs from all Serbian and other tribes, and he
settles in his warlord, in his so-called fortress.
In order to survive and not fight each day, with Serbian
tribes living in Italy, he kidnap - the Sabin, or Serbian women and girls, and violently abducted them, kidnapped them,
    and dragged them into his own camp, into their castrum Ramses, or future Rome;
and so one takes conditions for young , and, secondly, by distress, the immense
Serbian tribe enters into its friendship. The account is right, Rome is
expanding, also in the column of Ramsey's Egyptian soldiers, after the death of
Romulus or enrichment, after 30 years. he dead, Sabinic or Srb Numa began to
appear Pompilius 710 yr. before Christ - like a king.
The disagreement of German and other writers against all the
days: Slavic, and before Serbian, tribes, already known throughout the world.
Tatila went to beat Gotha, not to become their emperor.
He worked here with his father and brothers, and why his father came from Greater Serbia, or so
called Germanic and Pribaltic, if he does not prosecute and tarnish the Goths,
not to raise and strengthen them. He came to these lands to liberate the
oppressed and almost completely saturated Serbs, and not to trample them with
    the Goths.
