If it wasn't for the unrelenting opposition of the papacy, that considered any Italian unified state an absolute threat to the integrity of its temporal possessions(The Papal States), Italy would have become a powerful unitary state on the lines of France, Spain or England long before the Nineteenth Century when it actually achieved that unity -and in spite of the unrelenting opposition of the Church -an opposition that only stopped with Mussolini's signing of the Concordat in the 1920's.Oh history would have been so different!
6:30 Italian way to be clear in Southern Italy: "We are form the Kingdom of two Sicilies!" "Oh! I thought there was just one!?" "Yep!" Italian way to be clear in Northern Italy: "We are from the Kingdom of Sardinia!" "Ah! You are Sardinians!" "Nope!" "Ah, ok, but... You do speak Sardinian?" "Nope! Can't figure out a word of that!" Later we united because it was obvious from this that there was a strong cultural affinity all over Italy, basically we put together all those that think likewise and understand each other. By this criteria, the border with France was quickly more or less figured out in agreement of both parts... The first draft was apparently signed by someone named Oblx on Gaul... cough... France part. :P
Do you think you might, do a video on Matilda of Tuscany? You could probably grab some extra veiwers by covering other area's of hisrory further into the medieval age, not that you haven't covered periods or people in the middle ages.
The Medici Family remained in power until 1737. From your slide, it seems that they are in power until the year 1574. Do you have a source for (minute 22.25): "Strong economic ties with Naples. Helped with transhumance..."?
I just looked into it, and it looks like Venice had protested about taxes in the EU and they voted to separate in 2014 but I haven't seen anything else about it.
Great interesting video One correction tho, the condottieri were specialised in heavy shock cavalry, as we can see from their surviving contracts, most of the troops ordered or paid for were mounted knights and men at arms
Perhaps. Machiavelli certainly provides disclaimers for some pieces of his advice and emphasizes that while the things that he talks about are options, you are never required to do some of the devious things that he discusses.
@Augusto Helmer In this point is good to clarify what´s exactly the point. In that moment the HRE was not in the shape to deal with Italy. The Florecence "Great Duchy" was created in 1569 with the blessings of Philip II, de facto king of Italy. That is what I meant. Regards.
so underrated. this channel has really made me understand history rather than just being force fed popular concepts
Love these videos. You cover so many areas that are otherwise rarely covered.
Incredible video! I love learning about the Italian states

great point
It's just like that, if the pope would had stay in Avignon Italy could be a much better, relevant country today. Sadness for me
Competition amongst the cities pushed the advancement. If it was one big country. Monopoly attitudes would dominate.

Thank you, I was wondering which game that was
Fascinating period. The evolution of modern approaches to several of our biggest conceptual walls to climb when we venture into city building.
So the Brits still owe us some gold ? Good to know.

Your videos are great, thank-you.
Thank you so much for pronouncing "Medici" correctly! Just ask the last survivor of the family if you need confirmation.

Long live Venice! May our republic last a thousand years
Is venice still an independent Republic?
Uh... probably not
I just looked into it, and it looks like Venice had protested about taxes in the EU and they voted to separate in 2014 but I haven't seen anything else about it.
No they are "Italian" since Napoleon dissolved their Republic. And they are still very upset about it.

Next spring, I will be teaching a course that runs up to 1600 in Europe, so I will be dealing with the early modern period a little bit.
Great video, thanks

Is that a Sim City like Florence? Haha!

You somehow conflated Francesco and Ludovico Sforza into one person. Pls check your facts )
Actually the Duchy of Florence was created by Spain.
