The Best Value Baitcaster - Lews vs 13 Fishing

  • In this video I'm comparing my 13 Fishing Inception Reel to my Lew's Tournament Pro. Both are great reels. Although I've put much more time in with the Lew's the 13 Fishing Inception is quickly becoming one of my favorite reels to use for reaction baits
    You can find these reels atshopkarls.com

    Final update: this little reel is the little engine that could ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxSlytCJqozTF7EbdP4LWP-HUXf9WRDJ0e . It performed flawlessly and was easy to adjust drag in the moment while I was battling a 35lb bat ray behemoth. Mind you, this reel is spooled with only 25 lb braid and 25 mono topshot. It's paired with the kastking telescopic heavy power rod and the two work well together. This has now earned my respect and confidence when traveling and fishing. If you have ever hooked into large rays and sharks, you know they pull extremely hard and can run forever! This thing clamped down on the fish and was easy to adjust during the fight. It has a nice decently fast retrieve as well. Twice the fish went on mad runs and I was able to gain back line quickly to avoid spooling.

    I love how B-Lat actually uses/tests budget equipment. There are tons of of bass fishing channels out there that mention a budget set up were the rod and reel are $200 each. Especially, when they tell you to get a different rod and reel for every single bait that you have.
    $100 for a rod plus $100 for reel is high end for me because this is a hobby, not my job. I have one combo over $100 and I do not have a problem landing bass as a bank angler.

    • @3spressoShot
      @3spressoShot Рік тому

      I agree its cool that he does that but i also believe in buy the best you can afford. just because its a hoby for me doesnt mean im going to cheap out IF i can afford something nicer. that being said we all enjoy our hobbies differently. I have every price range. i own an ugly stick, lews mach 2 combo, berkely series one, dobyns sierra, and kistler zbone. out of all of them the two most sensitive rods are the z bone and the berkley series one.
      to me theres not much difference between the dobyns sierra and the lews mach 2 combo which is incredible because the dobyns rod is more expensive than the whole combo.
      i got the berkley on sale for like 60 bucks and that things punches above its weight. i recommned it to anyone.
      i honestly think for a spinner set up you cant beat the berkely series one and a pfleuger president. if you can find the sereis one on sale, as they ften are you can have an amazing setup for like $120.
      as far as reels theres nothing wrong with the lews it will teach you to really control your casts or you will get birds nests. but thats not necessarily a bad thing it will teach you to really use a baitcaster. if you can afford it the daiwa fuego is very nice for its price, much nicer then the lews. but they all get the job done imo. the lews has never had a hiccup in the six years ive had it, my budy has had an abu garcia max pro for just as long with zero problems as well.
      sorry went on a rant but i will leave it because i think its good info for anyone new to fishing.

      @jessehuck8917 Рік тому

      @@3spressoShot I generally agree with you. The big part of high end combo for me being $200 is that unlike most hobbies bass fishing requires 3 to 5 combos for the average bass angler. A frogging/punching combo, a finesse combo, and then you have texas rigs, jigs, spinner baits, vibrating jigs, crank baits, etc. I recently got 3 more combos for $100 each used that would have been around $250 new. I have a finesse combo, frogging/punching combo, weightless fluke/senko combo, buzz bait combo, crank bait combo, 2x Texas Rig combos, jerk bait combo. If I followed the budget version of other channels I would be $2,000 in on rods, reels, and line. I have probably spent a little over $1,000 between combos, line, and tackle/baits. I could get away with less combos but I do not like have to change baits and lures on my poles every time I go fishing. I would spend a half hour or so just changing everything out and reorganizing baits when I have only two or three hours to fish.
      I like your suggestions and information. I chose the long game of waiting for people to sell stuff they are not using so I can get stuff outs of my comfort zone financially as I am not buying one or two things that will be the thing I use for my hobby.

      most pro use cheaper to mid grade fishing gears because they want to sell the product to the avg fishermen. If they just use high end stuff majority of fishermen ain’t going to buy it. If it wasn’t for that reason most pro would use $1000 combo.

    I've got like 10 of the original concept z's and I've had 2 problems with 2 reels but I've had them for years. 1 was the line guide quit working and the other, had some teeth broke of a gear. Going to make 1 of those work this week. I would definitely buy more and really want the new 1. And all i fish is Favorite rods. Another great vid B-lat! Love you, your content, and best of luck!

    Wow! Started out looking for a bargain reel. I got that and so much more! I’m giving the inception a try. I agree that matching your natural personality to reel speed is the way to go. I like cranking that handle quickly so 5.5s work for me with crank baits. Everyone is a little different and there isn’t a wrong or right. Great stuff B!

    I just ordered that Concept Z Slide, but I have a few of the old orange ones and love them. Got some Sport Zs, Concept A2s, and Inceptions too. I've even liked some of the bottom rung reels like the Origins... I didn't care too much for the original Origins but the newer ones like the R1, O1, and F1... they feel good and have the break control on an outside dial. All killer reels, and I also like that they make them in lower ratios. Reeling in a spinner or crank feels like reeling in a cinder block with a higher gear ratio haha. So much resistance even when you try and slow it down. That alone will tire you out if you're trying to throw it all day.

    I've got 4 of the Lew's Tournament Pro G's ( the version that predates the Tournament model you have here ), 2 BB1 Pro's, and 2 Super Duty's. I've had all 8 of these Lew's reels for over 6 years now and I swear, all 8 of em still work & feel as smooth as they did the day I took em out of the box. I have no need whatsoever to update them at this time. I used mostly Shimano's since 1983, and nothing has held up as well as my 8 Lew's reels, I kid you not. Each are in various gear ratio's. I love all 3 models that I bought, but the Tournament Pro G was my favorite, so I immediately bought 2 more......which is why I have 4 of those and only 2 each of the others. But I will say this: when Lew's calls their one particular model "the Super Duty".......they weren't blowing smoke at all, they mean business. My Super Duty's have hauled in 20+ lb blue catfish while trophy bass fishing using jumbo live wild golden shiners down here on the Stick Marsh/Farm 13 reservoir. ( not to mention trophy bass up to 12 lbs, four of em so far, but I've lost much bigger bass that spit the hook. ) Sure, a bait-runner type casting reel with the clicker for live bait would be better, but the Super Duty's work just fine for me, on ultra heavy rods when tossing live wild shiners that are up to 10" long & weigh a good 1/4 of a pound or more. Tossing baits THAT heavy is really tough on a low-profile baitcaster. I use the jumbo live shiners only from late November through April, the cooler months down here. I also use my Super Duty's for heavy flipping & pitching. To each his own, but I'm absolutely sold on Lew's.

    I've had the 6.8:1 Inception for several years now mainly for spinnerbaits and chatterbaits ... it's just like a Timex; takes a licking and keeps on ticking (though it is getting a little noisy over the last year but still working fine). Also just started a Lew's LFS Speed Spool with 7.5:1 retrieve; so far so good but it's only been a couple of months but I definitely see the difference when trying to slow roll with this reel. Though both feel okay in my hand, I like the fit of the Inception more as well. Thanks for your incite!

    Been using 13 Fishing rod/reels for like 4 years now. Started out with the Inception reel and Defy rods and fell in love with the brand. Now have Concept reals and a combination of Muse Black and Omen Black rods. And far above and beyond most other things i have tried. Biggest thing with me is i have small hands and the 13 Fishing reels are a lot smaller than most other brands without sacrificing line capacity. And as far as the drags go the Bulldog drags that the Concept series reels is pretty beast.

All you have to do is add lite oil to the 1 way bearing and that will sto. I personally believe the Daiwa Fuego CT is the best budget casting reel on the market. I gravitate towards the higher-end gear, but keep several budget reels for techniques I don't employ very often. I've tried 13 and tried Lew's...absolutely HATE Lew's. I liked the 13 offerings, but feel you have to get to at least the "C" model to get anything really decent.
    SLX is a great reel, but I think the CT edges it out overall.

    I have a bunch of OG concept A reels , they are my most favorite reels. I have one of the original concept Z, it is very durable but it is was not worth 200 dollars.

    In my experience it was completely opposite the lews I’ve never had a problem but the 13 fishing had issues with anti reverse

    Brian I have a daiwa zillion 10.0 gear ratio. After trying to use it for moving baits and all that, I agree it is way too fast. I found theres only 1 moving bait i can use it with and that is the jackall gargle....its a buzzbait that built like a spinnerbait and has a free swinging blade. It is hard to get it to plop or gargle on the surface, you have to reel it really fast to get it up and going. the 10.0 makes that into nothing. everything else, it is much too fast. I wasn't used to it and i kept reeling baits up into the eye of my rod and cracked the top eye. It reels in so much line in one rotation. So now, I have it on my flipping/punching rod. Thats all i use it for is to quickly reel fish up out of vegetation and timber. After playing with that reel i switched back to 7 gear ratio for most things and 6.3 gear ration for cranking and spinnerbaits and all that. These ultra fast reels aren't practical for most applications....the only thing I could really use it with was a very specific bait, a jdm bait at that.

    I just bought a Favorite Soleus 6.6.1. And the brakes are the business. Want to get your cranking rod for it (that didn't sound right, but you know what I mean). And got my son a less mach1 combo and the dual brakes are good to. But the favorite feels better in hand.

    I also have 2 Lews tournament pro reels. I love them but then pick up a Diawa CC80 for $50. The Diawa came close to the performance of the Lews. Then I wanted a deep crank reel. Research led me to a Diawa 150 5:? Gear ratio. That reel was as smooth as silk feels as nice as the lews and I think the breaking system is better. All that said I this yet purchase a Diawa Tatula SV, TWS, 103. This real is a step above in my opinion. Feel, smooth, have to work to get it to blow up and distance is comparable. And it dose not really blow up as much as fluff up. Much better better braking system. My $50 Diawa's are still in service but can feel the wear now (I'm out 4 hours a day fishing) and so far will be replace with another Tatula SV TWS 103.

    The concept button is in the wrong spot bought that one and when you set the hook I got that button to release side plate everytime but inception is bad to the bone.

    On a bad ,or really slow day. That skower rario helos alot as well.
    The more frustrated you get. The faster to go as well... Despite the fact that you are "trying" to slow down. Caught myself doing that the ine time i attempted to film a day on the water.

    I love my Lew's tournament pro! Just one correction you said it has magnetic brakes but it actually has a dail adjustable centrifugal brakes and they work great if you keep the hub on the inside of the side plate clean...

      @@BrianLatimerFishing I completely understand, I'm the same way for the most part...But I do prefer centrifugal brakes to magnetic brakes because it makes it easier for me to pitch...If you have issues with the brakes on the tournament pro just pop the side plate off and use your shirt tail to wipe the brass hub...It makes a big difference on my reel
