"Make sure your line doesn't go under the bar" THANK YOU!! I'm new to baitcasters and you have no idea how long I have looked to figure this out. Sometimes the simplest things experienced people take for common sense is the stuff we noobs need help with the most.
I spooled it with 8 LB test mono for lighter lures, gave it some practice casts and found that it did cast well ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxSlytCJqozTF7EbdP4LWP-HUXf9WRDJ0e , except that the anti-backlash setting had to be turned up almost all of the way to keep the "overcasts' ' down. I disassembled it, and found that if I potted some "shim washers" behind that anti-backlash magnet assembly, it got the magnets closer to the spool without rubbing, and I could get better control with about a 6 to 7 out out 10-Max setting. I also noticed that the handle shaft had some internal end play, maybe only 2 or 3 thousands of an inch, but it's still noticeable. If the anti-backlash and shaft tolerances were "tightened up" this would be a fantastic value. I've only used it for 4 days of fishing in a month's time, but I plan on keeping it.
Just found you. Your comments about "getting intense" struck home. I'm 71, and used to do a lot of fishing with my dad in my teens and early twenties. Then I stopped. I picked it up again about 6 months ago, and to my surprise, found myself spending an hour or more every time I went fishing, dealing with tackle (mainly line spewing out of control, wrapping around my reel, developing knots, hooking myself or clothes and otherwise making it impossible to enjoy myself, which, as a retired person, is exactly the reason I started fishing again. Now, after screwing up putting my line on my reel, and having to cut the line to get it off, I bought a Pacificsun reel machine, which spins the line as it comes off the package and into my spool. Still problems. I never even noticed these problems when I was younger. Second surpise is I can no longer see the line clearly to tie anything to the end of it. I'm working on a magnifying set up which should help with that problem. ALL I WANT TO DO IS GET TO THE DAMN LAKE, PUT MY BAIT OR SPINNER OR WHATEVER ON THE END, AND CAST , WITHOUT HAVING MY LINE COME OFF THE REEL LIKE A POORLY MADE SLINKY TOY. Even though I managed to screw up spooling a baitcaster reel, I still think that a colorful braided line might be easier to see for tying knots, and also avoiding the demon memory syndrome. At least it might curtail the moments when my wife comes into the room, takes one look at my face and what I'm muttering, and knows enough after 50 years to immediately walk away . I WANT SIMPLE. What do you suggest. I do mostly lake fishing (once my technical problems are resolved. Some stream or creek. Also, what size reel, line, weight of line. THANK YOU.

Once again you have given some very good advice. I actually like to change out my line. I find it relaxing. One thing I like to do with either spinning and baitcasting reel is the next time I hit the water as I'm heading out I let the line off of the reel and then once it's done I bring it back in between my fingers to keep the proper tension. Since the line is wet you won't burn your fingers or ruin the line with I thought spot. Again great video look forward to watching more and to follow you all season.
You gained a follower my friend. Best explanations to help understand why I was struggling so hard with fluorocarbon on my first baitcaster. Hopefully I can make it work with your tips. My head was about fixing to blow off my shoulders earlier.
I've watched several how to vids on putting line on spinning reels. They pretty much all say the same thing but you, my friend, do it much better. I would leave my bail open and invariably I would get line wrapped around the reel handle or whatever. Thanks for setting me straight on keeping the bail closed and backing off the drag. Your tutorials rock.
I have lots of line spooling gadgets these days that I love using, but in the old days I used a cardboard box. put the spool in the box, close the box with line coming out the middle. Works great. I like the suction cup that comes with the Strike King line.
Love your videos, Brother! I use spinner reels only because I am too dumb to use a baitcaster and here are a few tips that I have learned... When putting braided line on a reel, I tie a double knot and apply a small dot on the knot with super glue to secure it in place. When you have to replace the braid all you have to do is scrape off the old glue. When I am using flouro or mono, once I fill the spool I will take the spool off of the reel and soak it in hot water twice. Each time for about 15-30 minutes depending on the line diameter. Then I put the spool back on the reel and line it through the rod and take it outside and tie the end off to a solid structure and walk the line off to the end and start reeling in. Every 15-20 feet I stop and pull the line to where my rod tip bends and count to 10 . This does 2 things, #1 Tests the lines durability in various areas, #2 Helps to relive the lines "muscle memory" from production. Much love to you and your family, be safe, and keep up the videos!

I started backing all my reels with braid but I put a little bit of electrical tape on the spool first. I really don’t like fishing with braid as the main line as I just don’t really like the feel. The only reason I use the backer so I don’t have to buy as much line. I like to replace my line on the reel after each day of use if it was the main setup I used that day. I started using braid backing with 50lb braid to fluoro and my biggest problems were backlashes and my line getting bunched up to either side of the spook because of my double uni knot connecting the two lines. Can you tie the end of the floor carbon let’s say tool bolt or something something that’s sturdy put the drag on your big caster and walk backwards with your big caster to stretch outline a little bit is that a possibility?
Yes. If you look on the braid package it usually says what diameter the braid is compared to mono. For instance 30 pound braid might have the same diameter of 12 pound mono. The suggested line size on the rod, they are usually referring to mono or floro. So if the braid is in that range you're good.
Random User I’ll use the 25-30lb Zebco as a leader for shark and stingray fishing here in the SF Bay, I’ve been using the same spool for well over 3 years! Best cheap line ever lmao 😂
@OmniSlays Teflon tape is very slippery by nature. To me it seems like that wouldn’t adhere to your spool, where electrical tape would. I could be wrong though. I’ve never tried Teflon.
I ordered my first Lew’s reel yesterday. I had left over fluoro i was going to use for backing. Glad i didn’t! Thanks for the help! I may have blamed the reel!
i am surprised you did not mention the important part about spooling mono is that the way the line comes off the spool needs to be the same way as it goes on the spool of the spinning reel, so if you are facing the spool on the reel you will see the bail puts the line on clockwise and so the line coming off the line spool also needs to be coming off clockwise, some brands come off clockwise facing the label others counterclockwise so you have to know if the spool on the fool or table needs to have the label facing you or not
Brian , newbie to fishing and find your videos very informative. Question, i mainly fish small ponds and lakes from the bank. Is 75 yards a decent amount of line to put on a bait caster.
It's all I used for 40 years until recently! I caught just as many fish as i do on braid/flouro. The only time i have ever run into trouble with all mono is when fishing long casts with top-water lures. The mono stretch can be a problem if you are reaching out long distances with your casts.
Bro! I needed this. I was wondering why my line kept slipping. I would have my hands bleed trying tighten the line on my spool. Very very helpful dude. Thank you
On the spinning reel. Wrap the line around the spool twice. Then tie an over hand knot around the line going to the full spool of (new) line... then slip the tail of the knot and pull it tight. It won’t slip at all
Whatever you’re using for a camera is awesome! The clarity and definition is unequalled. What are you using for a rod/reel combo for your spinning setup?
If you’re right-handed, typically you buy a reel with a left side crank. This leaves your strong/dominant hand for hook sets. However, there are right-handers that prefer the crank on the right, so it can be just your personal preference.
Brian, When I'm finished spooling my reels and I'm not going fishing anytime soon. I tie on a paperclip with a slip knot on the end of the line and clip it to the last eye on the rod.
2 sided tape works best for me too stop braid from spinning on any type of reel that i spool up. Just a small strip will work. Half way aound the spool. Sticks very well to the spool. Tie on and get her done.. God Bless from Texas..

Yes. If you look on the braid package it usually says what diameter the braid is compared to mono. For instance 30 pound braid might have the same diameter of 12 pound mono. The suggested line size on the rod, they are usually referring to mono or floro. So if the braid is in that range you're good.
Can I ask why you prefer high-vis over a darker green braid .thank you
Good info here for beginners. However I dont use tour grade mono for backing I use cheap walmart mono that costs $2 for 800 yards lol.
Same. I’m thinking about trying electrical tape next time I spool up
Random User I’ll use the 25-30lb Zebco as a leader for shark and stingray fishing here in the SF Bay, I’ve been using the same spool for well over 3 years! Best cheap line ever lmao 😂
@OmniSlays how many times are you wrapping it around the spool?
@OmniSlays Teflon tape is very slippery by nature. To me it seems like that wouldn’t adhere to your spool, where electrical tape would. I could be wrong though. I’ve never tried Teflon.
Once in a while I'll use that tape from a drugstore, it's nice and grippy.
Awesome tutorial!! Greatly appreciated. 👍🏾
I ordered my first Lew’s reel yesterday. I had left over fluoro i was going to use for backing. Glad i didn’t! Thanks for the help! I may have blamed the reel!
Good info!!! I'm kinda liking that design of the spool for the Strike King line. Prices aren't terrible either compared to others.
Rewatching every new spooling 😂
i am surprised you did not mention the important part about spooling mono is that the way the line comes off the spool needs to be the same way as it goes on the spool of the spinning reel, so if you are facing the spool on the reel you will see the bail puts the line on clockwise and so the line coming off the line spool also needs to be coming off clockwise, some brands come off clockwise facing the label others counterclockwise so you have to know if the spool on the fool or table needs to have the label facing you or not
I agree and wait to try your tips.
Brian , newbie to fishing and find your videos very informative. Question, i mainly fish small ponds and lakes from the bank. Is 75 yards a decent amount of line to put on a bait caster.
Is it ok for starters to use all monofilament?
Yes!
Brian Latimer thank you 👍
It's all I used for 40 years until recently! I caught just as many fish as i do on braid/flouro. The only time i have ever run into trouble with all mono is when fishing long casts with top-water lures. The mono stretch can be a problem if you are reaching out long distances with your casts.
Tony Louvat thank you 👍
Yes you can. I used mono for a lot of years and it works great, at a reduced price from braid. If you’re on a budget, it’s a great option.
Not sure if your using a new camera but the picture quality looks great. Another great video.
Could you use a rubber band on the spinning reel for the braid to bite on to?
How do you decide to get a right or left handed reel?
If you’re right-handed, typically you buy a reel with a left side crank. This leaves your strong/dominant hand for hook sets. However, there are right-handers that prefer the crank on the right, so it can be just your personal preference.
My dad was left handed and always used his rods so even though I'm right handed I still use left handed reels. I guess it doesn't matter.
Sending love from up North in Penna keep up the great fishing watch you lot fellow fisherman Andrew !!!!!!!!!!!
Brian, When I'm finished spooling my reels and I'm not going fishing anytime soon.
I tie on a paperclip with a slip knot on the end of the line and clip it to the last eye on the rod.
Nicely done.
What spinning rod is that? Looks nice
2 sided tape works best for me too stop braid from spinning on any type of reel that i spool up. Just a small strip will work. Half way aound the spool. Sticks very well to the spool. Tie on and get her done.. God Bless from Texas..
Great info Brian,
When are you coming to California to fish a tournament??
Your equipment is nice I love that rod and reel both of them
Thanks for the help
