Complaining about noise and vibration on this car is absolute rubbish, I have driven one of these on a long trip and it was outstanding. Extremely quiet and refined (much more so than my 1.6) and the engine sounds great when you put your foot down. Turbo lag is the least I have ever experienced on a turbo car too, amazing for its size.
120HP, and 0-60 in 9.1 is amazing for a 1.0 3cyl when you consider the fuel economy. Bare in mind my first car - Vauxhall Corsa had a 1.0 3cyl unit that produced a sluggish 59HP, and a 0-60 time of 17.0. Also had to be pushed really hard so I was lucky to get 35mpg. Bravo to ford for this engine.
Hi my fiesta sport ecoboost nearly 20,000km is still ,,, strong,,, lovely to drive outstanding sony radio.usb.blutooth..n it does turn heads ,, treat the turbo nice though,,, let it cool after long runs,, I had a orion 1.6i ghia bac in 1990,,, love this more,, un saludo
For years I drove a Geo metro 1.0 with 55 hp. Now I have a Fiesta ST witha tune rated 215 and 245 tq. Mileage went down from 40 to just over 30, but it's the most fun car I've ever had.
Called a Fiesta Sport in Australia. Its a fantastic little car I get about 6 litres per 100kms and I have a lead foot. Can't complain about the noise always smooth and responsive plenty of torque and handles the Western Australian heat well.
I find it very comfortable for the size (I'm a plus six footer.) the steering wheel is a good size and the controls on the wheel are easy to use. The seats in front are quite supportive in corners my only gripe would be a lack of lumbar support. Although I wouldn't advise carrying adult back seat passengers for extended journeys. Are you in Australia or South East Asia? Different countries may have different specifications.
+John Gale What's traffic like where you most often drive the car? I've the same car, and in the middle of Sydney I struggle to keep the fuel use under 8l/100km...
The revised interior looks SO much better. It's amazing how some detail changes can make such a huge improvement. I love the sound of that 3cyl engine. Unless it's stupid expensive or uncomfortable to drive or something negative like that, this very well may be my next eco-box.
It's sad that in north america the manual transmission is dying off because they just don't sell. I die a little inside everytime I drive an automatic.
People on here complaining about the fact that it doesn't come with a manual... learn for Christ's sake! its really not hard, you are overthinking it. Manual is the way to go, cannot wait to get rid of my Focus with the boring DCT automatic. Would like to buy one of these!
I agree on the need for a manual, especially on a small car. My daughter just learned to drive on a manual Suzuki SX4, and she's probably the only kid in her age group at the school who can drive a six speed.
Honestly, us Americans aren't that bad! While many of us do not drive manuals, many of us do. I would doubt that she is the only one in her age group...likely many kids are driving automatics, but there are many young drivers who go for manuals as well.
OMG....A Fiesta that I actually want to drive!!! :) Ford is finally doing all the thing that we all have been begging them to do for YEARS....namely...bring all the great small Fords from Europe into North America. BTW......2013 Civic or 2013 Focus or even 2013 Dodge Dart (manual tranny).
Gesture with right hand, adjust left then right hands. Gesture with right hand, adjust left then right hand. Gesture with left, then right hands followed with a quick adjustment of the left and right hands.
I don't think most people that buy this car are going to care about the engine feel. It does seem to strike a good balance between fuel economy and power delivery though. This is another bold move by Ford and I want to see it pay off for them. With some refinement, whatever roughness there is could be smoothed out
Without doubt this engine IS the best three-cylinder out there. Americans haven't driven the VW's 1.2 or PSA's 3 cylinder yet. Absolutely AWFUL engines. VW delayed their release of a similar engine because Ford did such a great job and BMW i in fact benchmarking the 1 litre for their upcoming 1.5 litre 3-cylinder. As a fact I know that Ford develops their cars for running 240K kilometres. The myth of turbo engines being unreliable applies to older cars and aftermarkets but not newer ones.
WHY in the world would Ford offer the Ecoboost package as an upgrade to the SE, which automatically DOWNGRADES the wheels from alloy rims to steel wheels with crappy plastic covers ? It is supposed to be an UPGRADE ? C'mon Ford, get with it ! We WANT the same wheels with the car that look good, and should have the option !
Get aftermarket. It will be even cooler. Konig makes attractive 15" aftermarket wheels for about $85 each. Lightweight, too. MUCH lighter than most manufactures stock alloys. When the tires wear, I would just order up some of those with some high gas mileage tires.
I'm encouraged by the fact that American car makers are starting to show some imagination. I was going to wait for this vehicle to become available but I bought the 1.6 liter instead (so slow). I'm waiting for reliability reports before I take the plunge on the ecoboost.
Ive had two 1.0L fiestas (both manual) and in my experience they were faster than expected, fuel economy was great but a little lower than I expected. I had no issues with NVH at all it is a smooth powerplant that can be heard but it is quiet.
+Garrett Martin manuals are more efficient. an automatic sucks up power. and manuals are fun. automatics are for old people with a broken knee so they cant use clutch.
+Bryson Shires no they cant. the car here has like 146 torque. the auto trans makes some of that torque go bye bye. people are last that is why they get autos. autos cost more too so they are not good. they also cost more to fix. and they add weight to the car so it wont handle as good. but if u are old then auto is the way to go. or stupid because manual is hard to rev match.
old people have a hard time driving manual. so autos are for old people. manuals are for young people who want to have fun driving. if u want to be lazy and drive from place to place without having a fun and engaging experience then get auto lso women dont like manual because they think its more work. and its too complex for their simple minds.
I was talking about the 1.0L ecoboost 3cyl. engine. The ST that I see on their website has the 1.6L ecoboost 4cyl. I think we're talking about 2 different versions. Surely the 3cyl. variant that i'm interested in won't cost that much.
something no one has mentioned is that in the USA, Soo few people can drive manuals that insurance costs are lower for the economy class cars. the chances of getting a car stolen in manual form is a lot lower
If any of you are considering getting one of these, don't hesitate!! you wont regret it :O my step mom just got one and i fucking love it!! really quick for a 1l. it feels like a 2l to me :D
The reviewer seems to be driving the engine at over 2000 rpm for cruising which is very high. The Ecoboost technology means the engine likes to cruise below 1600 rpm. Accelerating normally; the economy indicator will ask you to shift gears (manual) at 1600 unless accelerating hard. The turbo kicks in at 1600 and Overboost at 1900 (usually). There are slightly more vibrations in this engine as it's a 1L3; but the economy benefits of the new exhaust manifold / small engine turbo outweigh that.
45 mpg highway for the 1.0 manual sedan. Totally worth it ... Better yet, Smart fortwo electric for groceries and my daily 25mile commute during the week, Grand Cherokee diesel for the weekends with the family. More cash in my pocket.
At higher rpms a 3 cylinders 1.5th order engine frequency pretty much matches the 3rd order of an inline six (basically the engine revolutions need to double in order to generate the same frequency). In other words at higher rpms a 3-cylinder engine sounds like a straight six. Some people here judge cars without having driven them, nor knowing about the physics behind those engines. I have driven a prototype of this and the ancient 1.6 Ti-VCT. The 1.0 is better in ALL aspects.
It's more complicated than that actually an its not crankshaft speed anyway. Rod length an stroke determine piston speed. The point was its torque curve measuring engine available power. Max torque is probably over 3500 rpm an very little at 1500.
Actually the cylinders are part of the block and don't move at all, unless you blow the entire engine. And the pistons, which I think you are meaning to say, don't revolve at all. They are going up and down in the cylinder. The actual piston SPEED is factored by the RPM of the crankshaft and you also need to compute the stroke and rod length. I don't pretend to know a lot more than that. But the point is that a small engine typically needs to run a higher RPM vs a large engine as the power "curve" (where you chart the torque a different engine speeds) is higher. That said, I have a Sonic with 1.4 turbo that uses a very small turbo which gives boost at low RPM, it actually does pretty amazingly well at 1800 - 2000 rpm, but its the exception. Still its torque curve has a lot more power at 3000 than 1800.
3:39 driving as low as 2000 rpm, What !. This clown hasn't a clue how to drive a manual gearbox. He should stick to the dodgem car auto boxes in future. The Fiesta is a fun car to drive, but not like this muppet is Trying to drive it. Maybe he use to drive a hearse.
Got a chuckle out of me and I was questioning his driving too when he said that the whole car was shaking at 1500 rpm, but driving around 2000 rpm is actually pretty typical for this car. Max torque is at 2500 rpm so there's really no need to rev it.
How do you think this compares to the Hyundai iQ. I am thinking of getting the Fiesta but I prefer the overall shape and turning circle of the Hyundai. Also I will save a few thousand pounds if I buy it. I do like the front view of the Fiesta but visibility is poor. Would welcome your views. I have only ever had Ford and Vauxhall cars and need reassurance if I go Korean.
8 years later, we never got the LED DRLS or the projector lights, those are EU only >:( and its not made anymore. Personally, i like the 1.6, although id love to have the 1.0 ecoboost, beacsue it is more powerful and it sounds better. and complaining about some things is nonsense, this car is perfect for long roadtrips, ive been all up and down the east coast with it and its done me so well! mine is a 2015 sedan titanium.if your gonna get a used one, maybee go for a newer one, 2016 to 2019 tbh. definitaly worth looking at
wait so is the 3 cylinder engine just an option? I'd rather just keep the old engine and take the new interior and exterior which is actually really nice
Weird complaints for an engine that has won INTERNATIONAL engine of the year award TWICE.........Ford Motor Company’s ultra-fuel efficient and spirited 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engine today was named 2013 International Engine of the Year, marking the second straight year A panel of 87 automotive journalists from 35 countries around the world judged the awards on drivability, performance, economy, refinement and the successful application of advanced engine technology.
Fuel savings with a +10 MPG 3 cylinder adds up to thousands of dollars saved on gasoline . I noticed this direct-injected gasoline engine sounds a lot like a diesel. Hmmm. I have a 3 cylinder engine in my Honda insight, and it has more than enough power to accelerate to 80 on the interstate. Over fuel economy is 70mpg
In Europe diesel engines are more popular than petrol engines. ALL diesel engines here are turbo charged. And apart from VW having had some camshaft drive chain problems with their 1.4 TSI engines and blown turbos on older pump injector 2.0 TDIs, there isn't much to say. As for Europe, all manufacturers are switching to smaller turbocharged engines.
Im interesting in the 1.0L. I would deffinetly need to drive it before I pick it. Plus the price better not be to big. I also want it with the manual so I dont care how it acts with the auto.
Hey dude, I just checked the Ford website, these nuckleheads are only offering the '14 Fiesta ecoboost in the ST model, the most expensive model! I did a "build and price" and the cheapest I could get it to was $22,195, not including dealer fees, taxes, and tags. I'm bummed, I was going to buy but I work too hard for my money.
Its a nice, fun ppl mover. I don't see ford losing its footing in the subcompact segment. As long as they follow the euro trends. Subcompact just look silly when dressed up as "muscle cars," as some US auto makers are finding out.
that's what i was thinking... i that new engine is going to last as long expecially with a turbo pushing it harder. it's not worth sacrificing reliability.. i'm telling you i'm just ranting a lil and agreeing
No that's not the same model at all, the ST is the top model 1.6L 4cylinder turbo ~200hp/200tq and all the suspension upgrades, sway bars, bigger wheels, 6 speed manual etc etc it's not the same model as this economy 1L 3cylinder. this one isn't on their website they aren't selling it yet but if and when they do it won't be $22k it will be closer to $16k. The Fiesta ST is much better than a Sentra SL in performance and handling. This isn't the ST model reviewed here!
The engine is already working twice as hard to keep up with other inline 4 engines and Ford is turbocharging it?. Wow its gonna have a lot of issue with maintenance then.
Sounds like Colum has received some speech therapy. Those who follow his reviews know exactly what I'm eluding to. Review wise, this car is going to be my next car; more specifically, I'll see how much the ST variety will be. Under $25k all in, I might consider it otherwise I"ll be rocking a 3clyinder in 2013. Heh.
NOISY !!! ....I'll give you noisy try my 2004 Cavalier.Since day one the wind is screaming from poor door seals. The power windows should have been manual because they break at 150 bucks a pop. The engine sounds like two squirrels fighting when you take off at a light. The seats are so cheap that we had to add padding so we don't sit on the floor. THE CAVALIER WAS $24,500.00 I want a 1.0 litre it will save you 1,000 dollars every year in gas and it has more torque than my 2.2 ecotrek.
Sadly a typical USA view of a small car. Small cars are common in many countries, like UK, many USA cars are still the large comfortable gas guzzlers. You really are not comparing this car in the markets where it is likely to be a best seller. Best selling car in this category in UK by 20,00 units!
The driver in this video is Canadian, not American and he's driving a Canadian spec Fiesta. In the States this car is called the Fiesta SFE,not Econetic and you couldn't get alloy wheels on this model in the U.S.
I have to choose between 2014 1.6 fiesta and 2010 prius (they cost about the same where I live, republic of Georgia). The catch is prius has almost twice the mileage but also has better mpg.
This 1 l engine is just a result of the government in Europe forcing the automobile industry to keep a certain fuel economy level. Unfortunately those engines dont last very long, but most cars in Europe will be rotten after a couple of years anyway. Its funny how the new Fiesta with 1l engine uses one liter less fuel on the highway than my 4l Ford :-D
Whoops! Looks like I won't be getting a Fiesta ecoboost then. No way am I spending $22k on a 3cyl. econobox. I'd rather have a loaded Sentra SL with leather, sunroof, Bose, etc, for $23k.
Right? give me a base model please, screw the options. I have Microsoft sync in my 2013 Focus and it sucks, its a pain to use, its impossible to hook up Bluetooth, and when you do it doesn't work well. I rather have something simple, less stuff to break and go wrong.
I prefer to add a GPS. Due to technology changing too often, everything becomes obsolete. I also like a simple small car. Something affordable and with less things to break. I would dig one of these with manual windows.
Complaining about noise and vibration on this car is absolute rubbish, I have driven one of these on a long trip and it was outstanding. great little-ish car , fun to drive and the 3cyl engine is not harsh - it's called character ! not too much of that around these days!
Everytime I see the "Fiesta" badge on the back it looks like Fiesto to me
I don't think most people that buy this car are going to care about the engine feel. It does seem to strike a good balance between fuel economy and power delivery though. This is another bold move by Ford and I want to see it pay off for them. With some refinement, whatever roughness there is could be smoothed out

It's hard to tell as of this moment, but is it possible to gestimate the reliability of this vehicle?
Ty. Bought myself a Ford fiesta recently and loving it
Since it is a manual, it should be okay. Ford is plagued with issues on their automatic small cars.

I'm encouraged by the fact that American car makers are starting to show some imagination. I was going to wait for this vehicle to become available but I bought the 1.6 liter instead (so slow). I'm waiting for reliability reports before I take the plunge on the ecoboost.
The fiesta is European not American. Europe has totally different different cars to what N America has and vice versa.
Ive had two 1.0L fiestas (both manual) and in my experience they were faster than expected, fuel economy was great but a little lower than I expected. I had no issues with NVH at all it is a smooth powerplant that can be heard but it is quiet.
Why keep mentioning crude? Ands what's NVH?
I'm interested in this car. I hope it will be available in Canada soon. It doesn't appear on the Ford website right now
Was the test drive in the Malibu area?
Why get a manual trans? How is one supposed to text and eat a whopper, and shift gears at the same time. 😆

Pity you don't have higher octane fuel as Europeans do. My Fiesta 125 ps ecoboost is pin drop quiet at a decent cruising speed (70 mph).on UK fuel.
what is the octane rating on it? i know that the US and UK use different systems.
Set a limit on speed? That's a horrible idea. lets hope a semi doesn't cut of little Jimmy.
Very helpful review of the 3 cylinder. Thanks

Sentra, Corolla, Fit, Civic, at this point it doesn't matter. Talk about putting off your customers!
Makes no sense to me why they charge more for the eco boost
How did he review a 2014 fiesta if the video was uploaded on the 4th of December in 2012? Time travelling car guy
1.0 3 cylinder with 123hp? wow!
that's what i was thinking... i that new engine is going to last as long expecially with a turbo pushing it harder. it's not worth sacrificing reliability.. i'm telling you i'm just ranting a lil and agreeing
This isn't the ST model reviewed here!
the revised interior and exterior look fantastic! the fact that its a 3 cylinder engine scares me though...
I actually quite like the Aston nose
The engine is already working twice as hard to keep up with other inline 4 engines and Ford is turbocharging it?. Wow its gonna have a lot of issue with maintenance then.
Looks like a Mazda 2 with Ford badges
THE CAVALIER WAS $24,500.00
I want a 1.0 litre it will save you 1,000 dollars every year in gas and it has more torque than my 2.2 ecotrek.
BRUCE LEE Why did you pay $24,500 for a Cavalier in 2004???
largg3
They wanted $24,500. but the car has 10,000 miles so I paid $14,400 plus taxes.
Okay cool, thanks for responding
*****
LOL I agree
GAS MILEAGE?????
Kia rio or ford fiesta ?
sound like the autobytel music
Sadly a typical USA view of a small car. Small cars are common in many countries, like UK, many USA cars are still the large comfortable gas guzzlers. You really are not comparing this car in the markets where it is likely to be a best seller. Best selling car in this category in UK by 20,00 units!
The driver in this video is Canadian, not American and he's driving a Canadian spec Fiesta. In the States this car is called the Fiesta SFE,not Econetic and you couldn't get alloy wheels on this model in the U.S.
damn expensive in malaysia 96+ thousand
Yeah,ur right.very expensive in malaysia
+Colour Wolf Kean damn why so expensive there?
I have to choose between 2014 1.6 fiesta and 2010 prius (they cost about the same where I live, republic of Georgia). The catch is prius has almost twice the mileage but also has better mpg.
WHAT? a 3 cylinder car has a raspy sound? Cant imagine how shitty it will sound with some miles on it.
a regular 1.0 3 cylinder would have 70~90hp I guess...
testing fiesta on silent hill? surprisingly foggy
How can a man who say there is vibration and noice in this car,be a car tester???
Sure looks good at least...
Prius' do growl... They're hybrids not electrics.
1.0 Liter EcoBoost 3 Cylinder.
Well they owned Aston Martin shares anyway
Yeah
Id rather have a Mitsubishi Mirage with CVT7.
Am I the only person who thinks the design is sort of like a Fiat?
usa gets a 1.6 with and without a turbo
This fiesta is go0d or nt?
I'm guessing that's not a ford engine under the hood.
LOL! Make a more economical car and sell it at a higher price. Yes, that's how Ford sees it. And, I wonder how do they define "economical"?
They think it makes ford looks more upscale... But it's just weird....
@MakeLoveNoBabiez
And 148 ft. lb.!
Whoops! Looks like I won't be getting a Fiesta ecoboost then. No way am I spending $22k on a 3cyl. econobox. I'd rather have a loaded Sentra SL with leather, sunroof, Bose, etc, for $23k.
yup complains about engine noise but forgets about all the useless infotainment system that all car makers think everyone needs
Right? give me a base model please, screw the options.
