Albert Lee shares the background and process of recording Emmylou's seminal Luxury Liner album released in December 1976. From the gear he used, to how the musicians were presented with the tunes before recording. This was taken from an informal discussion backstage with Albert at London's O2 arena.

What a legend this man is, I went to see him a few months ago just before his birthday on a cold night in Wales. He played and sang absolutely flawlessly and came to the foyer to speak to everybody afterwards.

Emmylou Harris contributed to the sleeve notes on Albert Lee’s album “Heartbreak Hill”, Emmylou wrote (something like) “When I get to the Gates Of Heaven and St. Peter asks me what I did on Earth, I will say with pride - if that’s allowed, that I played rhythm guitar in a band with Albert Lee!”
Albert Lee is renowned for his guitar playing, but check out his cover of Jimmy Webb’s “Highwayman”. Some years ago Albert was interviewed by Lee Anderton of Anderton’s Guitars. Lee asked Albert if he would play “Highwayman” - a favourite of his late father/father in law (?). Albert obliged - singing and playing the electric piano, delivering a fine solo performance. Made Mr. Anderton shed a tear.
Thanks to Zac for this video on the great Albert Lee.

I got a ticket this past January or February to one of his shows in NY. He said his fingers were so cold that they felt like pins and needles so he switched to the piano for a bit. That man's voice with a piano is absolutely beautiful .....he did a few Rodney Crowell tunes.
After the show the theatre had cake and his fans sang him happy birthday to him.😊
    What a nice guy.
    Thanks Zac.

I agree with you he is a genuinely kind acting gentleman . I met him for a few minutes got his autograph on an early album by Heads Hands & Feet . He acted totally surprised that I had presented him with an album that he played on. I was amazed and delighted that he didn’t seem to have an ego issue. Nice experience meeting him. It’s hard to believe that was years ago. He’s a totally brilliant musician.✌🏻

Hi everybody this is picker S. Burchfield. My former sponsor was in a band with Albert Lee, Buddy Emmons and Don Everly called the Dead Cowboys. I met Albert and asked him about playing with the GREAT!!!! Buddy Emmons. He said working out real fine!!! Albert had a 2 space rack case with a Korg A-3 for signal processing, mainly Delay and Comp. to my ears. Also he had a full rack space Korg Tuner. His speaker cab was a folded horn Music Man 2-12 cab and 130 Head, and a pointy A. Lee M.M. gitar. Thanks Zac for the Buddy Emmons Bio Shout. GREAT MAN and BOOK!!!! MY fave Emmons cut and maybe his was and is Special Door by Jazz Great Pat Martino. Fast Bop through all 12 keys. Buddy Smokes It!!!

Back in 1993 Albert did a guitar tutorial/clinic in my town organised by Lee Anderton. I had just come back from a holiday in Greece and during the tutorial I began to feel my insides going AWOL and I had to leave. I still worry he thought I was walking out- and needless to say, when I got home my gut settled down but for a while I was worried I might explode so I thought it best to scram! I hope he did not think I was unhappy with his tutorial. Andertons did another with Jerry Donahue which was also great and luckily I did not have to worry about my insides. The Academy of Contemporary Music evolved from these initiatives and John Jorgenson did a similar clinic that I attended. Great to hear Albert give his insight into that wonderful album that a housemate while I was at college bought in early 1977- so I have very long period of loving the music on this record.

Hey zac, you probably are aware of this, but I let you know anyway. There was an English duo called Chas and Dave, Albert Lee played with Chas in the 70s. "Chas and Dave Christmas knees up 1982" was on British TV, it's now on UA-cam. Albert Lee and some chap called Clapton are in it! A knees up is a party with music, booze and laughter. All the best!

I loved Albert Lee’s playing going back to the band Heads Hands and Feet. Saw him in Clearwater w the Everly Brothers on the comeback US tour in 1984. I got his autograph on the double album featuring the original version of Country Boy. He was a little surprised when I said hello and held out that HH&F album. He was very kind to sign it for me. Great interview with the great man. Albert has been one of my guitar heroes ever since I heard Country Boy on the radio - maybe it was originally released as a single in the UK? I've been lucky to see him three times and each time was brilliant. Once was in a little club when I got to sit in the front row about 8ft from the stage. I was like a kid in a sweet shop. The previous night he'd been playing with The Everly Brothers at The Albert Hall!

    We live charmed lives bro.
Cutting heads with Albert, and Jay Dee (who played steel on that intl submarine band record with Gram), Redd & Johnny on Dad's song King Of Kings... many of my dreams have come true. I've played Bob's guitar, he sent me a couple leftover parts for my collection, from the steel changer when he made that bender. I had no idea Albert was using Bob's guitar on Those tracks! This is another golden nugget of information brother! Thanks man!

Zac! My fiancee and I just saw Emmylou for the first time last night at the Wilbur Theater in Boston. It was great, she did a big run from Luxury liner which was a huge album for SHE and I early in our relationship, as it was one of only a few in my car during our first ever camping trips together. Annabelle, my fiancee, was the sole asian american holding up the fort for the dedicated country fans thereof, and we had a blast! AND, Albert Lee is my personal favorite guitarist, maybe tied with Scotty Moore, so man you couldn't have picked a better video to release for me specifically at this time. We ply country music together, and seeing Willie every year is what we call "Church." Seeing Emmylou was equivalent. Thanks for the good timing. Makes me think theres some order to the universe. Man I love country music. Here in Boston its far and few between, but if you ever wanna listen to a GREAT local radio show, look up "Dixie Bee Line" on WUMB's "weekend archive." Its my favorite radio show of all time, and sustains us northerners every Sat. night. It covers it all.

Many many years ago I saw Albert Lee play two consecutive nights at the Tramshed in Woolwich in south east London. The first night everyone looked very smart in matching shirts and ties and the second night was jeans and t shirts. The first night was brilliant but the second was even better. It was like the first one was duty and the second was kicking back and having fun. And he also played piano and was amazing. Every bit as good as his guitar work. It was a magical experience and I have to say thank you to Albert for two of my favourite ever gigs.

Bought my first Telecaster on the mid 70s because of Don Rich and Steve Cropper. Then I got a Jerry Lee Lewis double album called London Sessions with many high profile musicians on it. There was this guitar sound on several tracks that just grabbed me . Back in the good old days when we had albums with liner notes I was able to decipher that all of these songs had a guitar player named Albert Lee. I was hooked. Then Luxury Liner, Rodney Crowell, Dave Edmonds Repeat When Necessary (if not familiar find the youtube of Sweet Little Lisa ), Marc Benno Lost in Austin, etc, etc, etc. Did get to see him twice with Clapton and on the Everly Bros. Reunion Tour. Also check out the video of him playing with Val McCallum and Jack Shit. Thanks Zac!

I never noticed all the Country Music Guitar players but Roy Nichols, and then came the early 90s, my Dad and I seen Albert Lee for the first time on the Nashville Network hosted by Ralph Emery and he sang and played Luxury Liner, he was out of this world when he started to pick, wow. Then a few years later, I noticed a younger guy, Brent Mason, he was REALLY out of this world when some songs he had the chance to pick with a faster up beat songs off of Alan Jackson's albums and Brooks and Dunn, and even some of Keith Whitley's last few albums. Both Albert Lee and Brent Mason are the best. Albert Lee and my Dad both 80 years and both still play their guitars, my Dad plays more like Chet Atkins style.

I appreciate the humour, and this isn't a criticism of you - but Clapton would never indulge in the kind of, 'best guitar player in the world,' nonsense that punters are so bloody fond of. It's utterly meaningless - particularly in the light of the all the brilliant guitar players that were souly studio men, and were rarely if ever credited on albums in the 50s/60s.

That quote makes the rounds with various guitarists interchanged. Hendrix, Jimmy Page, etc.

Apparently Hendrix was asked exactly the same question when he first came to this country, his reply was you had better ask Rory Gallagher. I think this was a common myth going around at the time, did Eric and Jimi actually say that? I very much doubt it, I believe Jimi new very little of Rory Gallagher.

I’ve been lucky enough to play with Albert a few times at a couple of private parties. Just the nicest guy!

Yeah, it was a big deal for me, that album. Made me a big Albert Lee fan forever. My favorite tune with Albert is Dave Edmunds version of Sweet Little Lisa, which was a Hank DeVito tune (steel player in the hot band).

@stantissue2065. You may already know about this. There is a video out there on UA-cam called “Born Fighters”. The video shows the band Rockpile recording their album “Seconds Of Pleasure”. Part of the film shows Albert Lee recording his guitar solo for “Sweet Little Lisa”. Dave Edmunds - no slouch on the six - string himself, is just blown away by Albert’s playing on the track! The best but for me is when Albert finishes his part, comes back into the studio rest area, sits down on the sofa and sips a beer. Albert - modest to a fault, has that look about him of “Was that OK”? Edmunds himself says that his own guitar style is derived (Chuck Berry, early rock and roll) but Albert totally has his own style. The film is worth a look just to see Dave Edmund’s jaw drop reaction to Albert’s solo. Stay safe and well.
