VIDEO & BLOG-In this tutorial video I show you how to adjust your manual rear suspension on your Harley Davidson touring model. I am using a 2014 Harley Davidson Street Glide Special in this video, but the manual suspension has been used on other models. Additionally, in the video and this blog I provide you with a recommended Preload Settings chart.
I had a 2011 Harley Street Glide prior to purchasing my 2014 Harley Davidson Street Glide Special which had adjustable air type rear suspension. I must say that my Street Glide Special rides much smoother with this new manual adjust type rear suspension. I prefer the ease of the manual suspension preload adjustment knob system on my Street Glide Special much better. I don't have to carry around a small air pump to adjust my rear suspension when I am out and about and changing my load weight like I did with my 2011 Street Glide. Now I just turn an knob and I am on my way.
The manual suspension preload adjustment knob is under the left saddle bag. You only need to adjust this knob to adjust the entire rear suspension system on the Street Glide Special. There is no knob under the right saddle bag.
    Street Glide Suspension Knob
    Here are some simple instructions:
    Remove the left saddlebag.
Rotate the preload adjustment knob counterclockwise until it stops. The stopped position is the minimum preload.
Rotate the preload adjustment knob clockwise the recommended number of turns (see table below) to increase the preload for the total weight of the rider, passenger, and cargo. The knob clicks at each half turn.
    Install the left saddlebag.
    Recommended Preload Settings Chart:

    LOAD # OF
    TURNS

Thanks for the video. Just about to throw out my new air shocks off my 2016 Ultra Limited CVO because one of them decided to start leaking fluid. Harley quality at its best. So going with the updated 2017 shocks this time.

Might be late to the game, but the 2018 at least have the "low" variant of the shock stock. You need to make sure you are using the chart for the "low" shocks. It has a different count for the turns.

Can you safely lower the rear using the stock shocks ?
Or same kind of shocks .
I do not wan air shocks.
I did do the frist step.
    I installed a new seat
    Lower 1" an foward 2"
Would like to lower another 1" or 2"
I see all the lowering brackets for
    18 dollars .
    Something wrong with that.
My bike 2014 street glide special
    Solo bike.
    Any ideals.
I really dont want to spend the cost of 2 new tires just to lower it.
I can live it like it is
    It has 26000 miles
just would like complete flat foot on the ground of I could.

I purchased a set of these premium shocks for my 2004 Ultra Classic. Much improved ride but a nuisance to take the saddlebag off to adjust between one up and two up. There is not always a "safe" place to put your saddlebag so it won't get damaged (I keep a towel with me). I am presently engineering a way that I can adjust these shocks from a switch on the fairing. I think that this will be a big improvement and a lot less hassle. If I was riding two up the last time and head down the road alone, I can just hit a switch to set the shocks for one up riding without stopping on the side of the street.

Hey Ryan ... All great stuff, very helpful. I have a 2014 HD Street Glide S, when I adjust the rear suspension, even to its lowest setting, when I go over even the slightest bump in the road, the recoil sounds like metal on metal ! Do all 2014 Street Glides ride this stiff ? It takes the enjoyment out of the ride, makes you concentrate too much on missing even the smallest bumps ! Don't tell me I have to take the old lady on every ride just to smooth it out !!

    • @RyanUrlacher
      @RyanUrlacher  10 років тому +1

No, my 2014 Street Glide Special is as smooth as butter. I don't have anything like that happen bro.

Ryan, I just looked at a pair of shocks that came off of a 2015 Ultra Limited Low. I was told they are the same shocks as on your street glide but I see no evidence of them being integrated. It appears that only the left shock gets adjusted by the adjuster. Can you clarify your comment that they "are integrated and both shocks get adjusted".
