This gas on Venus could be a new sign of life

- Astronomers have detected a gas on Venus called phosphine, and weirdly enough, it could be a sign of alien life in the planet’s clouds. It’s still too early to say for sure that Venus hosts life forms, but the discovery opens up a lot of questions about what’s happening on Earth’s neighbor. Here’s what we know.

Definitely, only a matter of time until we find it.
Nope we are the only ones 😛

“Always has been.”
Well semiconducting n-type silicon, it can conduct electricity and/or act as an insulator for absolute 0 (space). Since there was a lot of it found there it could be potential ufo manufacturing and there just trashing the planet like we are. Maybe they have manufacturing facilities on Jupiter too and Mars??

Is this quote from a movie? Kinda sounds familiar
Sometimes i feel like that life can happen without suitable conditions like the tardigrades for example.
Young Dab it’s a meme
I like how they don’t play this up too much they acknowledge the Evidence proving that there isn’t life on Venus but that it’s a distinct possibility
In general the reception to this is being quite balanced overall. Not like the very same example their mentioned, the Mars meteor. I guess in at least this aspect the mass media (and the interviewed scientists) grew mature since the 90s. (Not dismissing this video, though. It is very well done and I learned some things I didn't saw elsewhere.)
Its good because this could well be the real deal. But it needs more research.
Yes... But I wouldn't say "the evidence proving there isn't life" because it could never be proved that life doesn't exist, only that it does. There is evidence that could explain their findings as being from alternate origin than life on venus, not proof that there isn't life on venus. And yes, it is a real and exciting possibility
I feel like generally researchers don't sensationalise their findings, it's usually the mainstream media
The evidence didn't prove anything wtf are you talking about?

Season finale: Aliens from Venus.
people think that there is only one kind of life the life that earth has . We all think that life only exists in earth like conditions but it's not true there may be million forms of life . We inhale oxygen and exhale Carbon dioxide and consume water and vica versa for plants but there may be organisms that inhale methane or any other gas and exhale some other gas than co2. It isn't important that all kind of life need water ,oxygen and other earth like conditions to exist and survive but there can be are millions of other possibilities. BTW it's just my opinion.
It is possible there are other chemistries that life could be based on. Silicon being one of the more possible ones. But from what we can tell, the reason that life on earth is based off carbon is that carbon has one of the largest number of possible combinations it can make with other elements, meaning the complex chemistry that can happen has the highest chance of doing whatever it is that makes life alive. So from our current sample size, which is admittedly small, carbon based life that uses water as it’s solvent is what we do know is actually possible
@@_lak3rs_211 can there be any kind of life in methane lakes of titan
gaming creates worlddd 24 we don’t know that tho. Sure, the possibility exists, but it’s also possible that life that survives off methane is impossible. We don’t know

Scientists: there might be life on Venus
Also scientists: Venus is the hottest planet in the solar system
It's hot relatively to us.
also the height at which they detected the phosphine was found is at similar temperature as earth it is not on ground level but in the clouds
Venus' atmosphere is similar pressure and temperature to earth in certain altitudes.
Actually, I think it’s Mercury. Mercury is a small almost asteroid like planet orbiting close to the sun.
Mercury is the hottest, at least in my opinion.
This is so crazy and super cool! I wonder if they will confirm it soon.
I'm really really hoping that this can be proven true, it would be such an immensely incredible discovery!

Nice summary of the situation so far. The BBC's "Sky At Night" covered this at length in a special on Monday. If you have access to BBC iPlayer have a look. It will be available for at least the rest of the year. The presenter is Cosmologist Prof. Chris Lyntott, and he interviewed Dr Jane Greaves who led the team at Cardiff University. The biochemist who did the experiments to try and rule out chemical processes even wrote and performed a song about it! The BBC made their show 2 weeks ago! They ahve also had to keep the secret until the public announcement.
The show's conclusion is that if, and it is still an if, this is a sign of life then it is not where we have been looking, has a chemistry & biology we did not know about, and therefore life must be everywhere. It is a really exiting thought.
BTW the original idea of life in the atmosphere of Venus was proposed by Carl Sagan back in the 1960s! It must have been around the time the runaway greenhouse was being discussed.
If you want to hear Chris talking about this he is hear on YT: ua-cam.com/video/VZ-st97BUzA/v-deo.html

I think people are going to be so dismissive of signs like this that it will take an alien invasion to confirm if we aren't alone. And even then maybe not. We got to believe we are special.
i was surprised when i heard about it.

I think this is our New World like Earth .
As a general rule, avoid news containing the words “could,” “may,” “might,” or anything posed as a question.
That’s not entirely true when it comes to scientific pieces. We can never tell unless we go to Venus and sample its atmosphere. However, Phosphine is not made naturally. Life on earth makes it though which adds to the chances that this is life as no known natural method can produce Phosphine
Emre Veliu this video has nothing to do with science
@Robert2Real
Science is the observation of the universe around us. We observed Phosphine in the atmosphere of Venus. That is science. You should know this if you’ve taken any science courses. Most 4 year degrees require at least one lecture/lab. I don’t understand your logic.
Emre Veliu observation is only the first step. And the observation is concerning a phenomenon. Science is formulating a hypothesis where you put forth the cause of the phenomenon which is to be tested through experiment. Again, this video has nothing to do with science. You don't understand my logic bc you don't understand science
@Robert2Real
You’re telling me Edwin Hubble observing that the nebulae previous scientists saw were in fact galaxies *wasn’t science?* Robert, please.. You’re embarrassing yourself
And who’s to say it won’t be tested? The hypothesis is that there could be life, naturally the next step would be a sample of the Venusian atmosphere. You going around saying this isn’t science is preposterous because observations are an important part of any scientific endeavor
Damm 2020 Got Better
ET finally got home
I doubt it.
2:32 wait... sulfur dioxide? as in, one of the trace gases that's already confirmed to be in venus's atmosphere?
Phosphine
Yes that's why they're checking it out
It is pretty unlikely but possible that other gases can create spectrum that look like phosphine in low concentrations while still presenting their own normal signal. These are also really sensitive measurements. But it will almost certainly be ruled out as more and more measurements are made with different types of equipment.
