I agree with many of your points, I was also looking forward to it and it disappointed me. They tried to modernize it without asking themselves what made the characters tick, they thought that they were that way just because they're for "those times" when in reality Jane always had a reason to give her characters different personalities. It felt disrespectful tbh.

I haven't seen this adaptation. Since the reviews haven't been good, I did some exploration and watched a few brief scenes on UA-cam. Definitely not going to waste time watching the entire movie. The phrase "adapted for modern audiences' comes to mind...and that usually means the characters and story are pretty much unrecognizable, and in ways that don't improve upon the characters or the plot. What was done to Anne is a travesty.
The character of Anne Eliot is iconic in her uniqueness as a J.A. protagonist, in that she is quiet and reserved. And I love that she maintains her quiet reserve while making the decision to step away from her awful family and pursue her own happiness for once. Amanda Root was a perfectly lovely Anne, with Ciaran Hinds as a wonderful Wentworth. The 1995 version is by far my favorite.

Persuasion was a huge disappointment and painful to watch. I hated the Netflix version so much.
