I never realized how much Nini was the problem in a lot of these situations. she was TERRIBLE at communicating with Ricky god DAMN
He literally asked for a break and saw other girls then started trying to ruin her new relationship, then deleted a comment about a music showcase because he was insecure? Sure shes the problem. Misogyny mental gymnastics are so funny .
@@UnBesoDeCristal Yes, Ricky did something really stupid, and he paid the price for it. He spent months trying to better himself and be a better person for Nini and they ultimately ended up together. What Nini did right after wasn't right though. She told Ricky that she was leaving way too late and that even though she knows about his abandonment issues. She should've communicated this way sooner. Ricky tried to be supportive of her decision and really help her with the new school. Nini again didn't communicate at all that she was not feeling good at the school and wanted to leave. Ricky could've helped her with that, but had no way of knowing since she never told him.
Now, yes, Ricky did something stupid, never said he wasn't bad either. He told Nini that she should come back for him. This was gross, I definitely didn't like that. Though again, instead of telling him how she was feeling about this, she just didn't communicate at all and led Ricky to believe that she actually came back because of him. But then she didn't really wanna spend all that much time with him (because of him wanting her back with him), which he didn't know, cause again, didn't communicate. Instead he's left wondering what he did wrong and becomes pretty frustrated. Especially when he wants her in the show, but she doesn't want to do that. And in a desperate attempt of spending more time with her, which she doesn't really want but hasn't communicated, he brings her into the show as the rose.
Both already kind of frustrated but not communicating, Nini has to write a song for both. But instead of doing that, she writes one for herself, through which she lets her frustrations about Ricky out instead of just telling him. Ricky, being surprised by this being a solo song is feeling threatened, which he should've communicated, but tbh I just don't think he felt safe enough to do this with her, since she didn't communicate at all even though Ricky was trying to. And he did something even more stupid in I guess an attempt to save the relationship and deleted the comment. The intent was there I guess, but it was a really dumb thing to do.
And then it just all fell apart afterwards. Nini pretty much wanted to do the exact same thing Ricky did back then and wanted a break. Ricky noticing that she just didn't feel connected to him anymore instead broke up with her, even though it broke him as well.
At the end, yes, they were both in the wrong, but I understand Ricky's intentions a little better than Nini's, since it was mostly in reply to her lack of communication.
What I really hate about all this was Nini in the first season singing of "I won't fight for love if you won't meet me halfway" and then just doing the exact opposite of it in season 2. Hate how they completely botched not just her but so many characters in Season 2. It's like they were regressing instead of progressing.
@@danielmarkovicthis was incredible wow but yeah to summarise it: they were an unhealthy couple no matter how u try to slice it. It’s really obv and tho we live rini, it prob wouldn’t have worked out
Yeah I Litterallt hate her
@@danielmarkovicno one is reading this damn essay
i feel like she is the female equivalent of the 'nice guy', who when you look deeper has a lot of issues, I think its the way they wrote her, she was obviously the focal point of the show, so they let her get away with a lot without holding her accountable, yes you can make your mains flawed, but its clearly written in a way where they don't seem to be doing that intentionally, she never really learns a lesson whereas some like Gina who was antagonistic intially ends up having a of growth, I honestly wish they didn't cancel it, the writing was actually starting to get more interesting
Ricky is a good example of a flawed main too. He clearly has abandonment issues and stuff to work through, but he actually acknowledges that and grows over the course of the series.
And I agree, I wish they would have given us atleast one more season, they still would have had half a year until they graduate right? And even then, seeing them move on to college and continue to grow would have been fun. But it is what it is.

fr when Nini told Mama C that she’s had “the worst day ever” after Mama C very directly implied that his mom was leaving his family and things were bad enough that her moms were letting him stay over, I lost a looooot of respect for Nini
Why? Because she was being self centered as most teens? And I don't think she even knew about his mom then... She is one of my least favourite characters but I am not seeing anything "wrong" there... I do love her mom's response though!
@@giuliac9735 actually up until Homecoming, I still shipped Ricky and Nini. I thought her talk with Ricky on the couch was cute and it was my favorite moment in the show until Homecoming. I was hoping that moment of self-centerness that made me lose some respect for her would be regained through her improving as a character and as a friend and eventual girlfriend (again) with Ricky. But she didn’t. Her words to Ricky that night (“you can always talk to me about anything”) were consistently proven dead wrong again and again and she kept being self-centered and selfish. So I never got that respect back, and when I rewatch that scene with the knowledge of things she says and does later on in the show, it is a very frustrating and irritating scene. Because it wasn’t just one time. It was evidence of a consistent pattern for Nini’s behavior and attitude.
For example, I lost a lot of respect for EJ in season one through his actions, like stealing Nini’s phone. He regained it in season 2 when he treated Gina well and then lost it in season 3, even though I never stopped wanting to see him improve as a character. I absolutely adored EJ in season 4 and he fully regained all my respect back. Edit: Unfortunately, Nini didn’t have a similarly redemptive or satisfying arc that showed her grow from a self-centered person to a more selfless person like EJ did. By the end of her run as a character, all of her plots were just about her, and her alone. And I’m not that interested in a character who is so excised from the rest of the characters. Every other character on this show has at one point functioned not to elevate their own character, but someone else’s. That’s most of EJ’s function in s4. He is there to help Ricky, the show, and Gina. We get a sliver of what he’s doing in college, but not much. But Nini, in season 3, didn’t even reunite with all her friends before leaving for California for good. She left letters but her function in season 3 was solely, utterly for herself alone. And I find that so absolutely boring, when everyone else is so intertwined and when the core theme of the show by the end is community, family, and belonging.
@@thylionheart yes, I totally agree. That's why she is not one of my favourites either, but I think her "journey" was of self discovery and "being enough" for herself, which is something she (and Olivia in her songs let be honest) champions throughout the show. I guess that can sometimes being taken as selfish, but it's a fine line.. maybe it was not handled well... I never rewatched the whole show, just snippets so I didn't catch all her inconsistencies but I see why you would have lost respect for that, I still find it very human, and normal, but not something I would stan in a character either.
@@giuliac9735 I think that’s what the writers were trying to go for, but the problem is that we don’t know much about Nini as a character prior to the start of this journey, and we see her experiencing a lot of privilege in her journey, with her main obstacles being an internal struggle that seems to show that she takes these privileges for granted, without understanding that she’s essentially been given handouts the entire narrative.
What I mean by that is this: Nini’s core struggle in season 1 was her wanting to go to an art school and being torn about leaving Salt Lake City. She didn’t have agency in the decision to have the Dean at the play-Kourtney called the Dean. Nini did not take that risk or make that choice for herself. Even though her acting in the play was terrible, wooden, and cringy, especially compared to all the other performances we’ve seen on this show, she got the school offer. We didn’t get to watch Nini toil over practicing her scenes after taking a risk to contact the Dean herself or see her act her ass off in the performance to make a good impression-if we’d seen that, this offer would’ve felt earned.
So then she goes to an expensive acting school, even saying that her moms are working hard to send her there. Private schools like that often require you to pay a year’s worth of tuition upfront, or at least a majority of it. But Nini isn’t even there for a month before she calls it quits. And since she’s only there for I think a little less than half the season, it comes across as a half-asses attempt and like she’s taking the opportunity that she didn’t earn for granted.
Then, instead of making Nini an ensemble member because she wasn’t there for auditions, like would be the norm, Miss Jenn goes out of her way to invent a whole new role for Nini as The Rose, giving her a prominent visual role. She even lets her write a song about it (even tho later we find out they can’t perform that song anyways without getting disqualified.) When Nini writes the song, she sends a recording of it to Ashlyn and says not to share it with anyone yet, or with Ricky. But Carlos posts it online without her permission and it goes viral. So once again, Nini’s success was not her own choice or her taking a risk. Someone else facilitated it for her.
Everyone knows the song is about Ricky. People keep asking Ricky if he’s okay. Nini even told Ashlyn not to share the song with Ricky, because she knew it was about him. But when he expresses how the song hurt his feelings because it vilified him, she gaslights him by trying to say it’s not about him and it’s just a song. That’s not a healthy way to treat your bf/gf and this is later addressed during the breakup scene. But the resentment and anger that Nini harbored in that episode was so deeply uncomfortable to watch because she kept looking at Ricky with this…disdain, almost, like she didn’t even like him as a person. It’s very interesting to see that Nini’s song going viral seemed to foster such a negative and toxic side of her to the point where I think those episodes are the most bitter and angry she’s ever looked-and it’s supposed to be the start of her Fully Knowing Herself.
When she finds out she can’t perform the Rose Song, she says they should do it anyway even though the club would be disqualified. Aka, she doesn’t care that everyone else in the club, who wants to win and who has been working hard, would be screwed over if it means her song gets to be in the spotlight. That is incredibly selfish. When the dance off begins, she calls it stupid (or something like that) and just…walks off. Doesn’t participate. Abandons the club and her friends. That’s the moment where it’s clear that Nini is absolutely contrary to the entire theme of the show, which by the end is resolutely about community, acceptance, and belonging. Nini doesn’t care about community. Her journey is only about herself, and in a show about community, that results in her receiving benefit after benefit from that community (Kourtney, her moms, Miss Jenn, Carlos, Gina-which I’m gonna talk about next) and not giving anything back. She takes from the community but stops participating in it.
Gina is the one who gives Nini the connection to her producer brother. Once again, it’s not a risk or choice Nini makes. It is handed to her, on a silver platter, after 2 entire seasons of her being passive aggressive to Gina. Nini’s journey is supposed to he about self-discovery, except she hardly does anything to earn it. Everything is handed to her, and she just gets the option of accepting or rejecting it without consequences for herself and without having to actively do anything risky. Yes, she wrote the Rose song, but she didn’t decide to post it online. Carlos did. She didn’t reach out to music producers. Gina gave her a contact. Etc etc etc.
Funnily enough, my favorite Nini song in the entire show is Out Of The Old. I recognized what they were wanting to do with Nini in season 1 and I thought it was interesting. That song is a good thesis statement for her character, but it wasn’t executed well in the long run.
Edit: I didn’t talk about season 3 bc I don’t remember her scenes well enough; I found them boring and extremely removed from the core drama that I actually was invested in
@@thylionheart now that you mention all the things people did for her without consulting her, made me realise she only got angry with Ricky for it, when literally everybody does that! Kourtney with the scholarship, Carlos with posting the song online, but somehow Ricky is the only one who went "behind her back" by getting her the rose role.. I understand they had other issues as well, but it's still interesting..

Yeah, imo it seems to be the case that the writing of Nini's character actually (probably unintentionally) paints her as a character who is bad when you actually think about it. They play up her pettiness for comedy like when she steals Gina's shoes and projecting to those bystanders.
My guess is that Nini was supposed to be what Rachel Berry was to Glee (but not as bad to fit the wholesome theater kid vibe the show was going for): a talented, comically ambitious, self-centered girl who dresses weirdly and the balance between making her a wholesome character while still a talented girl boss was not achieved. It was probably better achieved in the other female characters. Olivia's acting and her being the mc for the first season probably played a part in making her more likeable despite this.
He literally asked for a break and saw other girls then started trying to ruin her new relationship, then deleted a comment about a music showcase because he was insecure? Sure shes the problem. Misogyny mental gymnastics are so funny .
@@UnBesoDeCristal I never said Nini was the problem, just that she's not as pure a character as I had initially thought she was since the points in the video are pretty valid. She had a a few moments where she was pretty self-centered (not wanting when she just learned that Ricky's parents had split up recently) and hypocritical (getting annoyed at Ricky for not taking rehearsal seriously then ad libbing during rehearsal with him). While I do believe some of the other things in the video are more nitpicks on her character than anything, I believe the moment's I mentioned are valid reasons to think she is a bad character.
That is not to say that the other characters have the best character either. The moments you mentioned with Ricky are also valid reasons to think he is a bad character. His insecurity leading to the comment deletion and the loss of an opportunity for Nini. Gina is even more so written to be comically ambitious than Nini with her coming up with an incredibly difficult dance routine for Nini. Miscommunication is also a problem with most characters especially in the first few seasons.
None of them are perfect, and that is a part of what makes them interesting characters. They play up their flaws for comedy and drama. It's just that Nini's flaws are less obvious because of her mc status in the earlier seasons and Olivia's acting makes her out to be likeable quirky character. While Ricky's deletion of that comment, EJ's deletion of Ricky's voice message, Ashlyn's assumption that Big Red must want more than a labor job, (S4 Spoiler Warning) -Seb's- -cheating- , and probably more I missed are shown as bad things in the narrative, a lot of Olivia's actions like not properly apologizing for stealing Gina's shoes and the aforementioned are easy to brush past as not her flaws for the reason's I had stated. I'm sure other instances also exist where other characters do things played up for comedy/drama which would actually make them a bad character if you actually look at them but this video highlights Nini's instances.
TLDR. Just because I said Nini as a character can be pretty bad, doesn't mean that the other characters can't also be bad. The cast all have flaws which makes their characters more interesting, but Nini's flaws are less obvious because of the way the show frames them as her being quirky in early season's and Olivia doing a good job acting as her and making her likeable.
@@UnBesoDeCristal This doesn't take away from the fact that she was toxic (so was Ricky, Gina, and EJ). Don't get me wrong, I liked Nini but she had her issues. She was self-centered (which would be fine if she wasn't in a relationship IMO) , she was really bad with communication, and she was petty. In Season 2, she refused to be honest with Ricky about her feelings which is BAD in a relationship, she brushed him off like their relationship wasn't important to her. With characters like Ricky, EJ, and Gina, we saw them grow and hold themselves accountable, we never saw that with Nini. The show acts like she's innocent instead of letting her acknowledge her flaws and improving. Maybe this is something we could've seen in future seasons if Olivia stayed on but I doubt it.

this is why I don't get Rini stans, like, that relationship was awful. Nini only wanted him back when she saw that he was interested in Gina, then she immediately didn't tell him that she was moving away KNOWING he has abandonment issues, and then she completely blocked all attempts at communication initiated by Ricky (yes, he was clinging but it's understandable given that Nini literally did not talk to him at all). @@June_slayyeven when Gina was the lead other people shined. Kourtney actually got a storyline not centered around a boy and was very relatable. Gina was the lead but it wasn’t always about her problems and she helped people and let them shine

No let’s really talk about how nini really cheated on ricky fr cause ik it was ricky’s idea to TAKE A BREAK… but when you take a break in a relationship your still together it’s basically a separation in a marriage but anyways she literally cheated on him with ej and then turned around and stole him from gina cause as soon as she heard gina was leaving she pounced like a damn dog
OMGGG I LITERALLY SAID THIS YESTERDAY AND I THOUGHT IT WAS ONLY MEE, HE SAID A BREAK AND THEN SHE JUST GETS WITH ANOTHER GUY?

If Nini's outfits were on anyone other then Olivia Rodrigo, they would make me have to turn off the show
Ok I think nini was pretty toxic but what’s up with her outfits? I thought they were pretty nice?
@@imgonnaputsomedirtinureyedabs ngl lots of them were horrible, but lots were nicer, and i dont think the outfits shown are all trash
I think they were going for a Rachel Berry kind of vibe but man some episodes I was asking myself "does the stylist hate her that much??" i swear to god the other girls from the cast they may have been side characters in comparison to nini but they were dressed way better
HONESTLY I WAS SO GLAD WHEN SHE WAS GONE, THE SHOW GOT SO MUCH BETTER
Thank you, I thought I hallucinated that Nini was self centered after seeing quite a few posts that Ricky and Nini should’ve been endgame. Absolutely no hate to Olivia, I love her, but damn Nini was a menace. The sheer number of times she gaslit Ricky is outstanding 😂
She was so hypocritical by telling ricky and literally jumping on him for taking things not professional but in opening night she couldn’t even keep professional when ricky wasnt troy and then obviously the scene you showed in the rehearsal.
And she doesn’t know how to apologise, is self absorbed, and literally didnt care abt ricky and his problems but she only decided to care when gina and ricky came together for thanksgiving?

oh ur one of them annoying jatp stan's yeah this is why that flop ass show got cancelled
just typical teenage girl behaviour towards someone who broke her heart especially someone she was still in love with. And all of the scene's in the second season are just her trying to be her own person without hurting him people make mistakes sometimes.

Not gonna lie, I really loved Nini. Problematic or not, she was really funny. I know there may have been some toxic relationship problems between them in the next season’s second half, but in spite of that, I would’ve granted another chance whether it was bumpy or not! I’m really upset she left.
Problem is she did not improve at all. In season 2, she kinda lost spirit? At least that’s how I saw it. I could tell she wanted to go do her own thing. And I’m sure we all kinda could. I’m glad she had a little farewell. Would have been nice if she said goodbye but her story was definitely over
@@imgonnaputsomedirtinureyedabs I think Olivia's music success ruined Nini's potential as a character. Not blaming Olivia (I love her music and glad she found success) but it feels like the show just brushed off any future storyline for Nini in the middle of the season and started preparing for her exit. It also seemed like Olivia herself had checked out towards the end of the season.

Not to mention that every season a big character moment of hers was just undid the next season. Got back together with Ricky? Let's break them up again. Came back to Salt Lake after making the decision to leave? Let's make sure she leaves for sure next time.
No no no no no not the break up scene ok that scene broke me and for you too just criticise it is not it like No ok nini the best character in the show she’s so sweet and all your doing is putting the bad stuff that ninis and not actually showing why she feels that way
Gina’s outfits were absolutely AMAZING though 😌

says a lot about u because she is harmless af
Honestly they should have just turned her into a villain if she stayed
they prolly were gonna but then... she left...
wqtching this video though is like a beatiful villan backstory
I think she would’ve just naturally become one tbh, she was certainly on her way to it-beyond her relationship with Ricky, the way she abandoned the drama club during the dance off and then said they should perform her song even if it gets them disqualified showed a complete lack of community, which is what HSMTMTS ended up being about by the end: community, belonging, acceptance. By the end of s2, she had stopped being a team player and had become completely self-focused. Even back in s1, I think they messed up her character by giving her the ambition to leave Salt Lake City. That put her in direct conflict with ever being able to have a healthy relationship with Ricky-someone with abandonment issues.
By contrast, while Gina has ambitions, she also seeks stability and a sense of home, and is more like Ricky in being afraid of change because she’s experienced so much of it. Ricky and Gina were able to understand each other on a fundamental level and find a strong sense of home and community in the drama club that Nini never reached, because her being in the drama club was about herself and her ambitions.

so for you guys saying “y’all defending her r definitely Olivia Rodrigo stans” like is it illegal to like a character without being an Olivia stan and comparing the character to the actress? like I get it Nini could’ve been a pain in the ass sometimes but that’s no reason to bring her actress into this. It’s a damn scripted character.
@@vqnill. same thing i said on my other comment in the replies but it’s olivia stans taking it as an attack to olivia when u don’t like the character!!!
To make my own response to a certain comment on the video, I wouldn’t say she was self-absorbed per-say. She was just bad at handling relationships I think (especially with the first Rini breakup and the fact that she didn’t think about what problems Ricky might’ve been having with possibly his parents, and her breaking up with EJ WHICH, (sorry) by the way alone shows an example, in my opinion, of a terrible girlfriend (coming from a guy who’s never been in a relationship before, but still I’ve seen very good relationships play out in other media, though) and also believe me when I say that I have definitely seen way, WAY better relationships with girlfriends than Nini.
Seems pretty self absorbed to me
@@avviuu She was being self absorbed whenever it was a scene like with Ricky when they were in the room playing the piano, but for others however, not exactly.
@@SpideyMike2023 So 1/2 self absorbed
@@avviuu Mmmmm, well I guess.
The problem is that she shows self-absorbed tendencies in regards to other people, too. The “I get that” or “I understand” and then immediately talking about herself or changing the topic to involve herself is something she does to and about other characters-Kourtney, Gina, off the top of my head. A lot of the selfish traits in this video aren’t just when she’s interacting with her boyfriends/exes, but other characters. That’s what makes her self-absorbed and not just bad at romantic relationships.
Yeah I never really vibed with Nini, like one minute she was obsessed with Ricky and the next minute she was pushing him away. (To be fair I've known girls who can get like that over a guy, just never been that way myself.) But I never liked Ricky either, we actually have a lot in common but I always felt like he got too much favoritism from Miss Jenn, and I cheered when he and Nini broke up for good. And I wailed when he got with Gina, my girlll 😭
Sorry for rambling but i'm in an Olivia Rodrigo phase rn and none of my friends watched hsmtmts
I’m dying laughing. Her not sitting during Frozen was driving me crazy lol
0:38 This is actually iconic.
Y’all do realize she’s supposed to be a high school student right? As far as I remember there is not a single high school student who is not a problem
True. She's still unlikeable though. Ricky is a horrible boyfriend, manipulative, and has a whole hosts of problems, but his motivations are somewhat understandable. They never really tell us anything about nini, and in the first season it's kinda like she exists only to respond to the things Ricky's going through/ to create more plot. If they had actually given her a storyline outside of her relationship and outside of school, it might have been different. But going off what we've seen, she really does just seem like a self centered brat 😭😭
it's been four years since i've watched the first season so i didn't really remember how toxic nini really was since the beginning. i'm so happy gina was the mc in the 3-4th seasons and rina was endgame.
DONT YOU DARE RININ 4 LIFE WAS THE BESTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT......................

10:34 tbh I feel like the middle one and the one on the right aren't that bad
some of those outfits were cute tho, she just had too much going on underneath but like they weren't bad :(
i think every character in the show is obviusly problematic, cause nini is terrible with communication and boring, Gina is SO egocentric, Ricky has a lot issues and that makes his so insecure, E.J is so toxic, controller (he had a big evolution in season 2 but idk), Ashley is insecure and dramatic, Carlos is dramatic, Kourtney always had a opinions about Nini relation but she always wants controll her mind ,i think the only ones who dont have a problematic points is Big Red and Seb
she tried to make Ricky and Gina into villains, but look at Courtney’s sense of style when she was around 😭Ashley was just a yes man like the show did better without her
her and ricky just do not fit at all like they really just don’t understand each other… they have different preferences and ways of communicating. ricky connects more on a whole new level with gina compared to her.
i will always be pissed that everyone acted like ricky was obligated to say “i love you” back…
i just burst out laughing when she said “wHaT iF i iNviTe MySeLf OvEr” like- 💀💀
Honestly, i feel like throughout season one most of us felt like Nini was great ,everyone was fantastic and that this was just a recreation of hsm but towards the end of season one and start of season two i started realising that everything was connected. Eg: Ricky is clinging on to Nini so bad because his MOM left him, I’m sure if his girlfriend left but his mom was still with him he wouldn’t have been so desperate to get her back…😢 Nini was also the only constant in his life. Also i started losing lots of respect and the point where she started yelling at a couple to stop doing stuff… like would you like that? And i lost a lot more when Nini said that they should just perform her song anyway. Ur friends have worked so so so hard in the musical and ur suggesting that they get disqualified because u want to perform ur song? A real friend would have just accepted that she couldn’t perform the song bc her friends would lose out on everything they worked so hard on. And i think her stylist hates her.. like that Halloween party outfit genuinely sucked.
i just know for a fact half the people complaining abt this video r olivia stans
why is it so hard for y'all to believe people can like a character without it being because of the actress? it's not like nini killed someone ffs. it seems more like y'all are the ones who can't separate the character from the actress
