I think if the recent film encourages new readers to pick up Jane Austen, that they may be left disappointed. For me the new film, completely misses the key issues Austen was saying in her book about the lives of women, the limitations the inheritance law puts on their lives and the attitudes to marriage. Persuasion the book is a testament to love and love being the basis of marriage. Anne was portrayed as silly and immature, drinking straight from a bottle of wine, she says some silly things (the octopus) etc. Why the rabbit?🐰The casting of Anne was totally wrong for me - far too modern looking. I really enjoyed the 1995 film version. So glad I watched that first and had read the book beforehand as well. The reviews I have read have all been so bad they are funny. But they say there is no such thing as bad press - lots of people will have watched the film just to see how bad it is. Netflix - please leave Jane Austen alone!

I've looked all over trying to figure out the rabbit. The only thing I found that made any kind of sense is that the character in fleabag has a guinea pig she holds and talks to a lot I guess? My hope is if people read the book because of the movie, they will realize how much better the book is.

They covered the limitations of women in the film. Frederick mentions them or at least a few of them in the film. I don’t think that film was very modern looking. I mean there weren’t any cell phones or laptops or cars even and the clothes were totally of that era. I read the book and all I remember of the book was Anne and Frederick getting their second chance so the film helped me to relive the whole book. Plus it explained her family situation in the beginning.

It seems to me that the Dakota Johnson version of Anne Eliot is a mixture of Bridget Jones (not just because of the more modern setting), Elizabeth Bennett, and Emma Woodhouse. All of which are decent enough characters in their own places, but none of them are Anne Eliot, a much gentler and more faded rose in a way. I don't mean that Anne should look old or past her prime, but part of the story is how she feels somewhat like that. And the character being someone who could be talked into doing what others decide is best is a large part of what helps Anne grow into someone who finally stands up for her own interests.

Exactly! I think the script shows a complete lack of understanding of not only Anne but of the story that Jane Austen wanted to tell. Thanks for commenting! I appreciate the interaction.

No, this movie won't make people go read the book if they haven't yet, as a matter of fact, one of my friend who never read any Jane Austen's book, watched this movie with me after that she was like "wow, and you said you loved this book? I want to read Fanny Burney. For my Jane Austen challenge of reading an author of her day, I chose two since they were short: Mary Wollstonecraft's Maria, or The Wrongs of Woman and Goethe's The Sadness of Young Werther, both I loved. I wasn't a fan of the 2022 version of Persuasion. She wasn't Anne Elliot and the dialogue was terrible. The characters didn't have the chemistry that the 1997 characters had. I adore the 1997 version! The 2007 version is alright, but again, I don't feel the characters have the chemistry of the 1997 version and it's rushed.

I love the 1995 version of Persuasion - wonderful. It’s on UA-cam as well if you haven’t seen it. I also can see some merit in bringing a new audience to Austen but I feel anyone who enjoyed this version of persuasion would be sorely disappointed with the lack of fart jokes and the awkward scenes in the actual book and with Anne Elliott herself! I thought the new Persuasion was Meh. The beginning was funny. I love Henry Golding but thought he was under utilized. Agree Richard Grant and the actor who played Mary were fabulous. I thought breaking the 4th wall caused Dakota Johnson to be more of a fly on the wall than truly interacting with the other cast. It was strange. I don’t need a movie to be a true adaption. I just want it to be good. Thanks for sharing your insights.

If anything, Henry Golding was overutilized. Meanwhile, the lead and heart of the story is buried beneath quirks and ticks used to make it funny. Cosmo Jarvis is quite handsome and swoonworthy, but his dash and his smoldering longing are barely glimpsed. This should have been a movie about Ann and Captain Wentworth, not so much and will she get together with her cousin played by Golding.

@@bookingthroughlife Although I love Henry Golding, I think this script made the role of William Elliot too large. Had Golding been cast as the captain in the same script, he, too, would have slumped under the weight of quirkiness and mugging at the broken fourth wall. Persuasion ought to highlight longing and second chances. William Elliot is smarmy -- that is what serves the story. Make him sweet and ambiguous and you undercut the story.

But, sir, HOW would this film encourage anyone to read the book? If the viewer hated it they aren't going to seek out the book and if they loved it and expect the book to be anything like it, won't they hate it?? Wouldn't this just lead to more bad.reviews for a brilliant novel and the possible attempted erasesure of JA's quiet heroines? @@ArtBookshelfOdyssey oh, Mansfield Park 1999 is pretty bad. Like, it's not AS bad as Persuasion in some aspects, and gosh darn it if we don't get a great performance from Sophia Myles tossed in there that almost makes it worth sitting though (almost), but as an adaptation it's abysmal and the changes they made to Fanny Price and Sir Thomas are unforgivable. Even as just a period film it doesn't always hold up because of certain things that were clearly incorrect and just added for feminist and "yay we're against something bad, clap for us though we clearly didn't do our homework"...
It's more watchable than Persuasion 2022 but it's still just bad "fix it" JAFF on screen at the end of the day.

Those who hate it and have never read Austen, will avoid the book because of the atrocity that is this movie. A few people might read it if they hated the movie and they've heard they're nothing alike, but this movie will do very little and those who find Austen because of it, will have found her anyway.

@@ArtBookshelfOdyssey I have seen Clueless when it was on HBOMax and it was good. I also watched the Kiera Knightsly Pride & Prejudice and Sense & Sensibility with Prof. Snape in it and the Sanditon bbc series. After watching the film The Jane Austen book club I decided to check out the book Persuasion because there wasn’t a film version of it. And I really liked the book for the main theme of second chances and so I really liked the Anne and Frederick storyline besides Louisa also having a crush on Frederick and then she falls off the stairs I don’t remember or paid attention to any of the other characters. The book didn’t give too much descriptions of Anne or Frederick and their personalities. So I read Persuasion as a girl who has has a crush on this guy and she doesn’t know how to tell him how she really feels and vice versa. I also have ADHD and dyslexia so missing words when I read and it makes visualising book characters hard to do and skimming past words and phrases and scenes when they get boring is probably why I don’t remember the other characters and what they put into the story except to point out how horrible Anne’s family is towards her and no wonder she wants to leave them. Again Persuasion is my favourite Jane Austen book because of the Anne and Frederick getting a second chance. The Netflix version did an awesome job on making me visualise Anne and Frederick and the other characters and to see what they were all doing. For example when in the book I knew that Anne went to parties when she was in Bath but I didn’t really know what was the big deal with her family and stuff. Watching this film I saw how Anne longed to tell Frederick how she felt and vice versa and yet they couldn’t get the right words out because they were scared that they would be rejected. I also loved Frederick’s friends Capt. Harville because it was obvious that he knew that Frederick still liked Anne and so he wanted to see how Anne felt about Frederick. Anne talking to the camera just brought the book to life for me it was like I was listening to the audiobook.

I have watched Persuasion on Netflix 3 times and it’s awesome and amazing and I love it even more as it helped me to finally visualise the characters and the story from the book. In the book I always found Anne relatable in how she was crushing on Frederick and how she doesn’t know how to communicate with Frederick and vice versa. Also this film also let me understand what was going on with all the other characters like with the father and the older sister or when they go to theater. In the book I just remember Anne saying that she went to theater but I never really understood what was going on in the book. I loved the beach scene because it showed how both Anne and Frederick were alike in so many ways and it showed how they still liked each other but couldn’t communicate with each other.

Thanks for replying! I've been hoping to chat with someone who liked it. These opinions are of course my own and I personally did not care for it as an adaptation - but I think I was able to enjoy it more separating the film from the book. I thought the beach scene was a very powerful one - when I first read the book I kept yelling at them WOULD YOU TWO JUST SIT DOWN AND TALK ABOUT YOUR FEELINGS PLEASE! LOL... and the beach scene gives me that, at least a little bit. I loved her sister and her father's portrayal in this movie - and I actually thought the opening did a good job at explaining the opening of the book in a way that I understood - her father's obsession with the book of all those names, etc. I didn't quite understand the importance of that when I first read it and found it to be kind of confusing.

@@ArtBookshelfOdyssey Exactly! The beach scene was very beautiful to me because I know what it’s like to like someone and to not be able to talk to them. Also watching the film and seeing Anne’s personality her social awkwardness, and impulsive talking and clumsiness made wonder if Anne could ADHD which could be possible since back then no one knew what ADHD was or about mental health issues. Also as a girl with ADHD and dyslexia it makes me feel good to think that Anne might be ADHD at least to me. And there is a modern version of Persuasion called “Modern Persuasion” looks a bit better than Clueless and Bridget Jones Diary. Also I didn’t think that Anne was an alcoholic in this version but it goes to explain my ADHD theory about Anne as she would look to other sources of calling herself around Frederick. Again this is just my take on this.

@@ArtBookshelfOdyssey I looked up the rabbit and he was just supposed to be Anne’s pet. My theory on the rabbit was that it was Anne’s fidget toy or emotional support animal for her social awkwardness and her emotional dysregulation.
So here is a bit more of why I liked this film more than the book. As I always like film or show more than the book.
I loved the film and I read the book. The film let me actually and finally visualise what happens in the book. I don’t know if it’s because of my adhd and dyslexia but I have never been able to visualise book characters even Harry Potter or The Hunger Games but I was able to understand the main point of the story. Persuasion is my favourite Jane Austen and this film is now a new favourite of mine already seen it 3x. So in Persuasion I was always looking for the Anne and Frederick parts in the book and when they would finally get their second chance. The only other main point that I picked up in the book was Louisa falling off the stairs. So I skimmed the book a lot especially when it got boring and I didn’t understand what was happening in the book due a lot to the language being very poetic and very filler like like they took lile 2 pages to say that they were going for a walk so I skipped a lot of the other characters in the book or words and phrases that I didn’t understand. Like you said the beginning of the book is very confusing. Aside from the Anne and Frederick scenes in the book I skipped the rest because it was a bit confusing to understand the language. And I did the same thing reading Pride. & Prejudice but at least in that book I had seen the Keira Knightly version already so I knew what happened so it helped me understand the book more. And I tried reading Persuasion again and it’s definitely the language that makes it hard to understand the storyline. Having Anne talk to the camera helped me understand the families living situation as well as other things that were happening it was like having that personal connection between the reader and the author. I loved the longing looks between Anne and Frederick and how her personality came out in the film. I definitely think that Anne has ADHD. Using some modern language with the original language made the film more interesting and enjoyable and understandable. Something that the book did not do because the book is a bit confusing with the language even if I understood what was meant in the letter but for the most part the book was filled with a bunch of filler poetry words that didn’t really explain what was going on. Again maybe I didn’t understand the book due to my adhd and dyslexia. So I just read for Anne and Frederick phrases. Which is also what I did for Pride & Prejudice but in this book I had seen the Keira Knightly film so I just read for those film scenes.
