- According to the American Society of Agricultural Engineers (link below) broken limbs or tops of trees (widowmakers) account for 11% of tree felling fatalities. In this short video, I show an example of such a tree, and how I test trees for soundness prior to felling .

Some of those dead tree tops can break off and get hung up high in surrounding trees where you'd least consider. I was pushing my way through some small windfall while checking my lot after hurricane Fiona. It was just enough to dislodge a 6 foot piece of dead tree top that came crashing down just a few feet away from me. Lesson learned and shorts soiled.😜
I'm learning as I go. Thanks for the info and videos Greg. Be careful out there!
Thanks man - yes that sounds like a close one :)
if it was the only tree in a cold desert , sure, but branches also burn ..pick your battles and follies
11% of tree felling fatalities. That's kinda scary when you think of all the things that could go badly wrong. Esp once you bring chainsaws into it.
yep
I'm not encouraging anybody to try this. But you can break some lamp posts the same way, by shaking the Jesus out of them until the weld gives out. Like you say, there are a few flaws in that truck. The more you stress them, the more chance a large chunk of it is going to give.
Can you cut down this tree with a silky saw?
You'd still be moving the tree and there would still be a risk. I think you'd only bother with this tree if you were in a life or death situation and in need of firewood.
@@outdoorsonthecheap Aye man it's not worth it. You got a few good swings in, time to walk away and wait for a storm to bring her down. Plus, it's not like it's the only tree in the forest. Better to be the bigger man, and find another tree.
How about a rope, a pulley and a truck??
Falling tree trunks hurt trucks too :)
@@outdoorsonthecheap ok. A long rope. Lol
