Excellent channel with very clear presentation. I've just bought a used H4n Pro and it's fab, but I'm a complete newbie when it comes to audio,. I'm finding this channel very useful for learning what it can do (particularly the audio interface function.) I also bought a used Rode Podmic. It's a lovely bit of kit for £65 (with XLR cable included), but I'm beginning to wonder whether I really need it, or whether a Podmic was overkill. I made a video using the Podmic & a lavalier mic into the Zoom simultaneously, but the two sources did not mix well together. It's all new learning for me at this stage. 😊
Have watched several videos on this, and you're the first to address all the issues (almost). I understand the solution is to simply put some batteries in the unit, but if I were to use a powerbank only, is it true that the unit resets the date/time? Like any, my powerbank shuts off just seconds after it has no power being drawn from it... so would I need to reset the date and time of the H4N pro (for example) every time I power the powerbank back on? Again, I understand I could put batteries in the unit... but would rather not.
The time and date will remain for a few minutes, I thinks it's about 3min, after the removal of batteries/power. So, if you catch when the power bank turns off, you could turn it back on or fit batteries and the time/date settings will remain. However, if you're not quick enough, the time/date will revert to the default ones.
Appreciate the info. Thats a surprisingly short amount of time. My H6 arrives tomorrow (supposedly) so some testing will show what happens without power, what the file names are after losing power... etc. Thanks again for the video - one of many that helped me choose this unit.@@DIYVideoStudio
That's not a problem I have encountered, so I'm not sure why your recorder turns off when enabling phantom power. Have you tried using external power (the mains adapter or a power bank)? Also, are you using alkali batteries or rechargeable batteries? Rechargeable AA batteries have a slightly lower voltage, so if you are using rechargeables that might be the issue. Also, ensure your recorder has the latest firmware installed.
When I ran a test using 2 copper top Duracell batteries in the Zoom H4n, I got about one hour and 45 minutes of recording time. That was with two condenser XLR mics plugged in that required phantom power from the H4n. But if you only get 15 minutes of recording time that seems a little short. However, the battery life will vary depending on what you are asking the recorder to do.
Mine's doing the same, I've really only turned it on to set it up and to record a couple of really quick tests so far. It is only the first set of batteries that came with it, so lets see how long the next set lasts.
Modern power banks are designed to deliver the power the device requires, so there shouldn't be a problem. The cable itself isn't the issue, since the safety circuitry is in the powerbank itself, the cable is just a means of connecting the two. I've been using my H4n (and now my H5) with a powerbank for ages with no problems.

Credit where it's due. This is an excellent tip about using a power bank and the correct USB cable. Much appreciation from Ireland.
I'm glad it was useful
Thanks for video, super helpful, no more buy AA battery every day shooting
Glad it was of help. This is the way I have been using my H4n for some time, so I'm using fewer AA batteries.
Excellent. Thank you. Clear, concise and well delivered. Just what I was looking for too!
Thak you.

you're a lifesaver! 🤘🤘🤘
Happy to help!
Super helpful, I kind of forgot I had mine and fished it out of a drawer this weekend 😂
They're great recorders. It's amazing how useful they can become, and what they can be used for.

Jak long it should last on two batteries? My one is just brand new and I can get around 15 minutes

@@tonya5809 That's interesting to hear.
Im worried about frying my H4n, what are the chances of this happening with this cable
