I'm convinced that the entire universe has conspired to bring to us a man who was perfectly built to give detailed instructions on how to use audio equipment
Thank you so much for your comment, Uni-Carnage. Mike McMillan

We need more Mike in UA-cam Land! I've had this H4N for 4 years, and I learned more in one hour than I learned in my first year.

I'm a complete replica of PropwashFilms, been trying to work out technical method, for years, and then out of the wilderness comes my savior in one hour, resurrected!!!
What a great tutorial. You didn't assume we know anything, which was perfect for me. Sometimes people make videos for more advanced users, assuming we understand the terminology that, for me...is too much and makes the tutorial difficult to follow.
Angela, you're so very kind for leaving that nice comment. I really appreciate it. Best wishes with your videos! --Mike McMillan
Thanks from Bangladesh for taking the time to do this for us. Peace.
Hi I have a question. I recorded myself in the garden playing and singing.. at the time I had a poor p.c so when I went to edit it did not work . Now I have a better p.c , have put a decent video editing program in it . Anyway I still have my old video . I was using my h4n pro . But all I can see is me and 1 mic . I havnt got the old audio recording . I just can't figure out what I was doing. Why would I only be using one external mic plugged into my h4n pro . Sounds crazy I should remember but I don't. Unless I had mic going to vocals and had my guitar plugged into external number 2 , but I can't see a lead . It appears I'm unplugged . I can't understand why I would have just used one mic , especially with the xy internals .. what setting would I have had my zoom on if I was just externaly plugged into number one and nothing else . Sorry hope you can help with my confusion . Wish I had set my camera wider so I knew what I was actually doing at the time . :-)
Thank you for your patient explanations ❤
My experience:
- the device drains the batteries very fast! They should have used 4 batteries, 2 is not enough for a recording session. Indoor you can use a cable, but outdoor you always have to take some extra batteries.
- the startup time is much too long. Waiting half a minute at minimum is not acceptable. I've read that larger SD cards are even worse, so select smaller cards and take an extra card with you for an outdoor session.
- I often got 'date write error', which is annoying after having recorded an hour or so. The complete recording is lost in this case. The error occurs when pressing the stop button, not while recording. Formatting the SD card seems to help.
- all in all the recordings are good, but the device is not reliable.
I don't understand why an incredible teacher like you doesn't have timecodes in the description? Never mind, I saw the link! You saved me! Saved by the link! Girl's gotta do a MTR in 2 days and I'm a tad rusty. Thank you, Mike!!! 😎
Thanks for the comment, Lizzy. Hope your project goes well. My Best--Mike McMillan
@@lizziebordenaudio Hi Kate! Yes, they still go out. Did you click the link in the description below the video? A page would have appeared where you input your email address and hit submit to get the pdf file. I checked in my auto-responder account for the past two days and I don't see an email address that looks like your name. I don't want anyone to post their email address here but if you could give me the first three letters of the email address you used it would help me find you in my auto-responder account and then I could just email it to you. Alternatively, try putting your email address in the form on the page when you click the link in the description. Let me know--I want you to have the booklet. --Mike McMillan
@@lizziebordenaudio Hi "Lizzie". I just emailed you the direct download link for the booklet to both email addresses you used to get the booklet as well as an explanation of why you didn't get the download automatically. You're all set now. Best Wishes--Mike McMillan

First time running Audio for a project today, wanted to make sure I knew what I was doing before I stepped foot on set. Thank you for the professional and extensive tutorial!
Nice to meet you. You're more than welcome!
4channel mode creates 2 separate files on the SD card. One for built in mikes, one for externe mikes. You can mix them new ie in audacity
Thanks for the info Findus. I'm sure that will be helpful for others to know here. Take care and best luck with your channel! --Mike McMillan
Dude, Thanks for that tutorial. I learned more in your vid than a dozen other creators who claim to show functions and features for this H4N model. They just sit there and talk or sit there and sing and play their song or hook up all this peripheral equipment, keyboards, mics, mixers, but never show how to use the damn thing. I just wanted a tool to record multi track acoustic guitars with a vocal to sound decent enough for songwriting. Nobody would use this thing for real world recordings. You should do a tutorial on how to do tutorials when reviewing equipment. Thanks Again!
Thanks so much for your nice comment, Fred. Greatly appreciated!
Very well done! you managed to make me (my attention span is max. 20 sec.) stay and look at a screen with one almost stationary device for about an hour. Thank you very much learned a lot.
Thank you so much for your nice comment. Glad you liked the video. Although you can use the built in microphones on top of the unit, I prefer plugging in a lav mic to the back of the unit as I often stand while recording and that gives me a little more freedom to move around a bit. Good luck with your projects!
Hello ! I just bought an H4N Pro and thanks to you I could start using it really quickly. MTR recording looks amazing and for sure I will want to have a try on it really soon ! Thank you for your time and for sharing with us.

I may have a job coming up using one of these units and was concerned about having to figure it out on the day. Having watched this video I feel confident that I'll be able to easily navigate the unit and complete the job with confidence. Thank you very much for taking the time to make this comprehensive video!
Thank you for your nice comment, Wesley! Best wishes on your project. Hope it works out great for you! -Mike McMillan
A beat track as you call it is a "CLICK TRACK" in film terminology. I'm a studio musician since 1972 and I've never heard it called anything else :-) but you have made a great little video and you get into most of the details of the H4N which was very useful for me as I didn't know all of the functions either. Thanks, have a great day!
Hey, thanks for the heads up on the "click track" term. Glad I know that. I don't have the studio experience you have so I appreciate the heads up! Nice to meet you and best wishes!--Mike McMillan
Hi Mike, I am a drummer from Belgium and did professional drumming in my younger years. Anyway I bought this vintage drum of 1972 from the drummer of the band Soulsister. I want to do home recordings with the zoom H4nI and enjoyed your tutorial a lot. Keep it up. Grts

Hey, thanks for your kind comment. --Mike McMillan
Bought this in 2024 for $50 and I think the only limitations is your own musicianship. Get rid of those computer screens while you make music! Thank you for a great video!
This was so useful. I just recorded a podcast in 4 Channel mode with each channel stereo which was a mistake, and your explanation of how that mode works was easy to understand. Now on to MTR with each track in mono.
Actually havent left a comment on someones vid for years, but this is seriously too amazing and comprehensive i could not not say thankyou thankyou thankyouuu!!!!

Extremely helpful. I have watched other tutorials on the H4n. I was going back and forth regarding buying it or the Berenger Recorder. You have convinced me to buy the H4n. Thank you so much! This is exactly the information that I was looking for.
I'm looking to venture into multi-track recording, but it all seemed so complicated, and it wasn't clear at all to a novice what the tools could do.
You've taken the fear away 😊
Hi Ester! Thanks for the nice comment and best wishes with your multi-track projects. --Mike McMillan
Very insightful, and instructional. Now, I'm trying to figure out what I did to keep my H4n Pro from going into standby before it actually Records. Now it just records after 5 secs. No blinking, no nothing.
Hi Jeff! I don't have a good answer for that problem. Sorry your question got by me originally! --Mike McMillan
Thanks for the in-depth walk-through - extremely helpful.
Thanks for the nice comment, Chris. Best wishes! --Mike McMillan

Great vid answered a lot of questions as I am trying to decide whether to pick one up currently. One question I have though is whether it is possible to use the MTR with 2 XLR input sources simultaneously? Looking to do a voiceover tack and ambient track in one go.
Good question. I have only one mic with an XLR connector so I can't test this myself for you. However I believe you can do this. Also the following video by Colin Gray titled, Setting Separate Recording Levels on Each Zoom H4n XLR Input, shows exactly what you are asking about.
ua-cam.com/video/cUXqGjKeMoI/v-deo.html
Hope that is helpful. By the way it is a very short 3 minute video so it won't take all day to watch.
