  • The Walmart Gaming PC -- the Overpowered DTW1 -- is back almost a year later. We're re-reviewing the Walmart Gaming PC to see if it has fixed its problems.

    In this video, we're testing the Walmart Overpowered DTW Gaming PC. We tried to order the DTW3 again, but it appears to be out of stock (or was at time of purchase, anyway). We waited a few weeks for it to be restocked, but that never happened, so we now assume that Walmart is clearing inventory and not restocking. Prices have been cut tremendously on the Walmart DTW1 and DTW2, for those that remain, and now it's a question of whether it's worth it just for parts (or a cheap gaming PC). Unfortunately, it seems that some things don't change, and that Walmart still managed to make some big mistakes. A few things improved, too, but, well, watch the video to see the rest.

      Have you guys ever thought about reviewing the PowerSpec brand (Microcenter's house brand)? They consistently sell computers at, or below, the cost of DYI builds with the same specs.
      They're selling a 9900k, 2080, ROG Strix Z390E, 850W gold PSU with cablemod sleeves, 16 Gb Trident Z 3200 RAM, a 500Gb 970 EVO M.2 in a O11 Dynamic with a custom hard line loop using EKWB parts, including that distribution block they made for the O11 for $2500 (on sale pretty much continuously from $3000).
      Between the parts and the labor involved in installing the loop I simply do not see how they can do this.

    I've spent most of my adult life working in retail. The reason it sat in a warehouse for a year is because Walmart, like most retailers, will see the computer as a single, finished, product that has a limited shelf life. When the software/hardware is out of date enough (how much, honestly, depends solely on its sales numbers, determined by computer programs and/or some eggheads in their sales and marketing divisions), they'll do exactly what they did and slash the prices, to sell the remaining stock before the product "goes bad" and they end up sitting on a bunch of, what they consider, non-sellable product that they lose a bunch of margin on.
    So, to answer your question: No, they learned nothing on this generation of pre-built PC, because this generation of pre-built PC was built and shipped to warehouses to capitalize on peak season sales, and that's it. They may, _may_ possibly learn from whatever next iteration they may create coming down the pike this peak, but considering Walmart's propensity to cut every single corner known to man to maximize their profit margin, I'd expect their build qualities to remain shitty, while masking those shitty builds with flagship components like GPU and CPU to catch the eye of people who are less informed and tech savvy, such as myself, if I'm to be completely truthful.
    Basically, pretty much all big-box retailers have no soul and don't care if their product sucks, so long as they sell enough of it for executives to buy their fifth gold-plated yacht. I'm not bitter at all.

      I think the fact Walmart will drop a manufacturer’s contract over fractions of a penny and kill the company says enough. I know a guy who sold his company and within 2 years they got a Walmart contract. They had to ONLY work on Walmart’s orders and another company was brought in by Walmart, for literally a quarter of a penny per unit, and killed the business.

    • @DarkWiNKenzo
      @DarkWiNKenzo 2 роки тому +2

      they absolutely didn't learned, and when there were a problem, the seller was always in the wrong "somehow" ( I was one for staples) like, when we didn't had computers to sell (gaming ones) for about 3 months, and we got shitted on by the customers, because of the things that happened in the canal. to remind you guys, I had to literally tell them that we couldn't have one, even if we tried to get it as soon as possible, it would take an "un-registered" time, which basically meant they didn't knew shit about the date at which we'd have them, and then people would storm out the door. (i've got no sour-ness toward the employee's) and the boss, since he actually did his job and fired me to get someone better qualified. I just like being completely transparent about the things i've learnt while I worked there.

  • @dennisplayinglacrosse
    @dennisplayinglacrosse 4 роки тому +9

    Alright, I suppose I should give my 2 cents on these gaming PCs since I actually purchased one when they were on that huge sale in late June. I've always been super into the tech/PC community for many years now (mostly just watching videos and reading reviews), and I actually looked into getting a PC since like 2015. Somehow, I kept talking myself into keeping my old laptop (which didn't even have dedicated graphics) for about 5 years until I bought my first PC this summer (2019). I will say that I didn't buy the DTW1, which was around $700 and what you *should never buy* even at that price, but instead I purchased the DTW2 for $900 before tax and received it about a week later. I actually bought it kind of on a whim since I saw the deal, watched only one review of it (by Bitwit Kyle), and decided that I could get around the poor thermals by taking off the front panel. I knew I wouldn't be expecting much out of the PC and I would be in for a few upgrades, but I didn't care since I would get a GTX 1080, an i7-8700 (non-K), and 32 gb of ram for pretty cheap.
    Let me just say, thank goodness I bought the DTW2 because it had some major changes over the DTW1 which I didn't expect. The DTW2 comes with an *H370* mobo (same bus speed as Z370 & Z390) and a 650w *80+ GOLD* Greatwall PSU (which surprised me when I took out the PSU). Most of the other stuff is similar in quality to the DTW1 (meaning not that amazing), but these two parts saved me around $150 in upgrades. That means that I didn't upgrade them, and I'm still using them currently while typing this. My overall experience with the parts has been pretty great and I surprisingly didn't get most of the issues described in the GN video (e.g: no hot glue on the USB 3.0 header, no USB 3.0 wire in front of the psu, USB type-c is on the mobo i/o and not an expansion, all cables are properly plugged in and ziptied adequately). Booted up perfectly first time and came with no bloatware (but the hdd was still oddly paritioned into 4 parts).
    For upgrades (which aren't required), I bought a wireless wifi adapter (TP-Link T4E), new PWM RGB case fans (Deepcool RF120M 5 pack), a new case (Thermaltake Level 20 VT), a PWM RGB 200mm fan (upHere P200RGB), and a Deepcool RGB convertor to use the 200mm fan with the mobo's RGB. The cpu cooler and psu have not been upgraded yet, but they're both definitely next on the list (since the case requires the psu to be removed to access the backplate). I'm not using the 2tb hdd currently but it's definitely a very good addition that I'll eventually use. I also have other things planned but I'll either wait for deals or buy they when I need them.
    Overall, I didn't expect much out of the Walmart PCs, but I'm glad I saw some value in them. The DTW2 purchase has been a really great one for me and it came with little hassle and more value than originally thought. Just because the DTW1 was a terrible PC didn't mean the DTW2 was, and just because it's a prebuilt doesn't mean it's a bad value (esp if you don't wanna come up with a parts list). I would recommend others to buy it if it were at $900 or less, but if you aren't gonna mod or upgrade, just make sure you're okay with loud noise, higher thermals, and more dust than normal. It doesn't really matter tho cuz I just checked and for some reason it's at $1,900 now lol.
    P.S: I got smart one night and spent a few hours trying to rewire the fan hub on the original PC to match the Lian Li fan hub (shown in the first GN review) and get PWM control. Ended up just having the fans not work anymore and having to buy new ones lmao

    Out of curiosity, I looked up the DTW1 on the Walmart site.
    "Memory: 16GB Dual-Channel RAM 2440 Mhz"
    Interesting... I didn't know RAM specifically came in a 2440Mhz variant. Of course, Steve already mentioned this, but the 'interesting' bit is that Walmart still has not amended that error on the web page (assuming anyone even visits it anymore except for a laugh).
    Reading further, I read some very entertaining reviews, including this gem (of which this is an exerpt):
    "And to address the concerns of it overheating it does run warmer than most other desktops but some more sensitive components are a good distance away from the heat source."
    Clearly, Walmart executives/marketing are entirely aware of their target audience, namely the kind of people who have ANFI that the 'more sensitive' components of the system are the very ones creating the raging inferno inside the machine in the first place. This seems typical of corporations like this one, where the overall goal appears to be to make as much money as possible from unsuspecting 'Darwin Award' candidates, whilst the top brass themselves make enough money each to buy several dozen truly high-end systems per annum. You can guarantee that no self-respecting Walmart employee would willingly have one of these systems in their own home/office, because they know full-well how bad it is and always have.
