lol, this is genius. I love how the lady walked in just at the right moment. It's perfection. I love the last quick question as I've been wondering if Richard likes Bourbon.
+Sarfaraz Hussein Merchant He did. I'm English but I don't mind. It's part of being neighbours. Most of the time it's harmless fun and it doesn't do to be too serious about it.
He's just being grandfatherly, in a Scots, gruff way. He's not meaning to be rude to the interviewer, and I suspect, it's just....for show. The antics bit in the presentation are simply that....meant to retain attention. If you're there for a whiskey education, he's about the best to give it. The enthusiasm is natural. To encounter knowledge and enthusiasm in one person like Paterson is a rarity. It's not wine for goodness sake.
So what am I doing sipping my Wiser's deluxe like a gentleman getting to know it in fact enjoying the fuck out of Richards enthusiasm and getting to really respect the individualism of Wiser's deluxe it's Rye and only Rye kinda like Canada's single malt, but at the same time wishing this guy would hurry up and get to blending me something apropriate for a 39 year old Canadian who's also a pot snob.I want it to finish like a 1989 skunk #3 or a 1993 Northern lights but still have nice notes of toffee on the palate. And no I did not knock it back like a fucking cowboy.😬
There isn't really anything wrong with chilling it with ice. Ice essentially is like slowly adding water instead of the drops as it melts. Proper ice is fine as long as you don't let it melt too much.
It is a matter of maintaining the authenticity of the Whisky - cooling the Whisky actually attenuates flavour - this is primarily why Whisky denizens won't go near ice, because it interferes with the experience of full flavour. It's a bit of an amateur move and is primarily used to cool down the heat of young spirit in cheap blended Whisky ... 'on the rocks' says you're either drinking crap or you don't know any better ...
The real trouble is that when you cool it too much it affects the vapors as the vapor pressure of the liquids is lowered significantly as you cool them that much. It should be enjoyed cool, but not cold. Think garage in the fall temperature
Yes, I am aware of how ice crunches the flavors. I personally drink Scotch and Irish whiskey neat. I like to use ice with Bourbon. It's why I meant don't let it sit too long in the ice, typically on ice I take it quick like a shot. Ice in moderation. It's good for high ABV whiskey too.
It's up to you of course how you want to drink your Whisky - however Whisky appreciation does not recommend among its practices drinking in shots ... that tends to be the absolute antithesis of what appreciation, nosing and tasting is all about ... ie taking it slow, taking your time etc. Ice and drinking Whisky shot style are at the absolute opposite ends of the scale of appreciation generally speaking ....
Rikitocker Yes, I drink my Scotch and Irish out of a glencairn glass. I love nosing whiskey. My bourbon however I like to down it out of a nice glass with a little ice like a buckeroo from wild wild west lol, I hate the way bourbon smells anyway rye and corn is gross, but the taste bites nice.
Richard Paterson is a clown creating this fantasy/myth of cleaning a glass of whiskey. You have to clean it first with water and neutral soap. then change the glass to taste another whiskey again because of the fuzel oil from the previous drink. This Richard Paterson is ridiculous
Paterson never fails to annoy. i'd be pissed off if i were the guy that had to clean up all the whisky and water he always pours all over the floor. and why does he keep slapping that guy in the face? why does he insist on always touching people's faces? has he heard of personal space? if i went to one of his presentations not knowing about him and his antics beforehand i would probably be scared away from whisky forever. learn some manners and give it a rest, bro.
To all those posting negative comments about Richard Paterson - he has been a master blender of whisky for over forty years.
He is due our respect.

The dislikes come from those who knock it back like a cowboy.

I love the last quick question as I've been wondering if Richard likes Bourbon.
Did he say England, bend down, and spit at 1:00?
+Martin Doggett he's a scotsman. its tradition.
+Sarfaraz Hussein Merchant He did.
I'm English but I don't mind. It's part of being neighbours. Most of the time it's harmless fun and it doesn't do to be too serious about it.
+Sarfaraz Hussein Merchant It's a kinda in joke, no harm meant just a bit of fun.

Respect the whiskey, don't turn it into a pissing contest.
The interviewers manner illustrates the difference between Bourbon and Scotch ... a clown act vs a class act
