KEEPING SWEDISH ARMED FORCES' HELICOPTER HISTORY ALIVE
“Flygvapenmuseum Helikopter” (Air Force Museum Helicopter) is a non-profit association that maintains and flies two HKP 5B (Schweizer 269C) and one HKP 6B helicopters that “Flygvapenmuseum” (the Air Force Museum) has awarded to the association. The purpose of the association is to keep part of the Swedish Armed Forces' helicopter history alive and in the air. The main task is to keep the helicopters in good condition and airworthy.
The Swedish Army operated two Hughes 269A:s from 1962 while evaluating suitability for reconnaissance and artillery spotting. The Swedish military designation for the Hughes 269A was HKP 5A (Helicopter 5A). The type was withdrawn from service in 1971 after accidents 1967 and 1971.
The Swedish military designation for the Hughes 269C became HKP 5B. The Hughes 269C helicopters were delivered 1980 - 1982 and the Schweizer 300C helicopters were delivered 1985 - 1987. The type was used for (very) light transport, reconnaissance, artillery spotting and basic flight training. All in all, 26 helicopters were delivered. One helicopter was written off after an accident in 1991.
The HKP 5B served with the Army aviation until 1997 when all HKP 5B helicopters were transferred to the Swedish Armed Forces Helicopter Wing (Helikopterflottiljen), which was the result of merging the Army, Air force and Navy aviation helicopter units. In the new unit the type was primarily used for basic flight training. The HKP 5B:s where phased out during 2000-2002.
The two HKP 5B helicopters operated by the Airforce Museum Helicopter where the two last ones to enter service with the Swedish Army and both were manufactured in 1987. Military call sign “Kalle 45”, serial number 1269, now has the Swedish civilian registration SE-JIR. Military call sign “Kalle 46”, serial number 1270, now has the Swedish civilian registration SE-JIS.
    Flygfesten
Flygfesten is one of the biggest air shows in Europe attracting over 50.000 attendees each year. Flygfesten is an eventful weekend with world class pilots and airplanes. It will include first world war pioneer to the lates of modern airplane engineering, and everything in between.
Flygfesten is an airshow that is arranged every three to four years in Sweden by Västerdalarnas Aero club, an aeroclub located in Dala-Järna in Vansbro municipality, with about 7000 inhabitants.
Flygfesten has since the re-launch in 1986 been arranged every three to four years. With an air show in top international class, our air show is considered one of the largest civil arranged air shows in Northern Europe. Although the air show is our major focal area, Flygfesten wants to be more than just a regular air show.
"We want an event with a festival touch, where Saturday's and Sunday's air show is interspersed with evening entertainment during Friday and Saturday night in the form of dance, rock, disco and fun fair. All of it framed by a pleasant atmosphere."
Flygfesten is a non-profit arrangement and is held to promote the activity of the club in particular and to aviation in general. It offers a good forum for aviation enthusiasts to meet other likeminded, while it is a fine opportunity for us to recruit new club members.
