I had to do the same with mine. Well worth it. I also decided to replace the front stock Alpines with Focal RCX-165 speakers. The improvement was noticeable. I'm working the courage up to replace the rear door panel speakers. Removing the wood trim is nerve wracking. Nice video.

Thanks, the wood veneers do seem to be very fragile. Mine suffered from the cloudy lacquer more than cracking so far. So far I have been pleased with the factory speakers. I may upgrade them in the future.

@@LowTechGarage Mine have been cracked on the surface from heat and I didn't seem to have issues with fragility when I pulled mine out, just don't be stupid and use a trim removal tool with an appropriate amount of force.

I own a XJ6 S3 I put some focal on the front audisson in the back and a underseat powered subwoofer. The sound is phenomenal since the previous owner just replace the blown speaker and none of the four previous were of matching brand or spec. Almost on par with my modern car 😊

Mine - in a Daimler Super V8 - turned out to be an open circuit coil (one of the dual coils)
I couldn't trace/source a direct dual coil replacement so I replaced the 6x9 with a 'mono' unit and combined the signals into a woofer amp with a bridged output = a mono woofer drive.
This gives me the controls to adjust crossover freq and levels. The result is likely as deep and strong a bass as one is ever gonna get from a 6x9!

Have replaced mine with a carefully sourced "good" used one and it rattled again after maybe 2 weeks. Repair kit is sitting on my bench now for when I get the patience up to take the seat out again 😝

yes! getting the seat is is quite time consuming for just a speaker. I will say doing the repair is well worth it though. I have been very pleased with the results.

I’d actually already watched this as I recently got a 2000 XJR but not had any issues with the sub til this weekend when my wife blasted Portishead a bit too loud and it couldn’t cope. Anyways thanks to this video I know what needed doing, really useful tips, I know I’d have given up at multiple points (or broken something for sure..). So right now the speaker is out and I’m waiting for the kit to be delivered. Which for £30 posted to the UK is pretty reasonable. I’ll let you know how it goes!

Portishead isnt a bad way to blow the speaker I suppose!
Best of luck with the repair, let us know how it goes.

FYI, doing the repair right now, and I notice the foam surround is designed to be attached to the bottom of the cone. if you look carefully you will see what remains of the previous surround is attached to the convex side of the cone. This arrangement allows the foam to sit flush to the metal framing. I was also able to get the rear seats back out without removal of the seat bottom...and slide the speaker out without removing the item tray, merely bowing it. thanks for the vid

Thank you for making this vid. I didn't even know you could do this! Saved me about $150 from buying a replacement.

Could you do a video on replacing the front tweeters? My friends nt tweeters don’t make any sound. It looks like I have to take the ceiling off to get to them.

Hi there. This may be a later video when we get the headliner redone.
Right now ours are functioning so no need to mess with them!

thanks for the great vid, my main concern was how it all came apart but thanks to your vid I'm up for the challenge now, just out of curiosity how do you link your phone to the factory stereo, I'm currently using a FM module, just wondering if you have a better way, thanks again

30:28 might you have been able to remove the grill and the "top layer" to bypass the rest of it? what was holding the top layer on?@@LowTechGarage
