There is one more way to get the key to work again and it helped with my XJR. Went from working not at all to working from 50m away every day.
1.) Take apart key as shown by Josh.
2.) Clean the inside of the key with a rubber (the ones kids use in school), especially all the electrical traces and connecting points as well as the inside of the buttons (these are metal induced rubber parts). The eraser takes away all the grime for the past decades.
3.) After having cleaned everyhting with an eraser, clean the keys insides with IPA or regular alcohol.
4.) Put back together.
5.) Re-program the key fob (as seen on autoreservejaguar):
- Enter the car and place the key in the ignition.
- Hold the headlight flasher arm back - the blue “high beam” light will come on the dashboard and the headlights will come on.
- Keep holding the headlight flasher back and turn the ignition key to position 1.
- Release the flasher, and then flash the headlights FOUR TIMES. You will hear a “Beep” AND/OR see a small red light illuminate briefly on the Gear Selector on the fourth flash of the headlight - this is to confirm that the car has entered programming mode.
- Program each transmittor (up to FIVE fobs can be programmed) by pressing any button on the fob. You will hear a “Beep” AND/OR see the red light on the Gear Selector with each press of a button.
- The car must “Beep” or red light flash five times to complete programming. Therefore, if you are only programming one transmitter you should operate the transmitter 5 times.
- If you are programming two transmitters you will operate one transmitter twice, and three times on the other.
- Wait for the car to exit programming - this will be indicated by a final “Beep” AND/OR the red light on the Gear Selector.
- The remotes are now ready to use.
6.) Enjoy a working remote

Thanks for the good advice. I also had trouble with the fobs. In addition to your information and cleaning the contacts with a pencil rubber I followed a tip to replace the two CR 2016 batteries with one CR2032, my fobs are much more responsive now. This may seem counter intuitive but apparently the explanation is that it's not a high voltage which is required but a high current which the larger battery is more capable of supplying- sounds odd but worked for me.....

Just did my remote...hasn't worked for 2 years. Mine wasn't the battery issue. I removed the rubber button cover to find the lock and unlock contacts were contaminated. I cleaned them up reassembled and bingo works. Well done low tech and look a little further like I did to find another issue.

First I’m hearing very nice comments from people all around the world on the excellent videos you are making.
Second, thank you for all your help and advice.
Third, is we have the authentic Jaguar parts on the way now and as soon as everything arrives the shop I’m using is going to finally fix all 4 of my timing chains and set my timing.
The upgraded guides and tensioners are on the way. Photos with little memos helped with that so they clearly could understand what I was talking about. They were passed on to the Jaguar dealership. So we should be getting close to finishing this huge repair job on my Jaguar XJR that I purchased last November. It’s almost spring here!!!!
Also...My shop insists on only using authentic Jaguar parts. So we are going with that.
The timing chain that actually broke is on the drivers side and closest to the front of the car.
My mechanic is NOT going to check for valve damage before putting it all back together.
Using OEM parts is never a bad thing. They are a premium but you get the quality.

When it is finished I’m looking forward to exploring my back seats. This particular car may include two original mobile car phones. The full-size spare tire in the trunk with original Jag rim was impressive! :) Italian rubber I’ve not had a chance to sit in, enjoy and explore my back seats at all yet.
My car will never be in as excellent condition as yours is but it is still an adventure.
You make that adventure a lot more fun and a lot less scary.

I’m not an impulse shopper but I need to admit that I got this Jag 50% on experience and 50% on raw blind impulse.
If I think back to where my interest in Jags came from - I’ve always wanted a big full sized
4 door luxury sedan - after that a few iconic films like sent of a woman with Al Pachino. On my first visit to Japan I became a private English Language Teacher. One of my students was a 64 year old Japanese medical doctor. This was from 2003-2005. One day he said Greg is there anything you want to do in Japan that you have not experienced yet. I said okay Doc there is one thing EXPENSIVE SUSHI
He said okay -- pick you up in NAGOYA ( near Toyota city ) .
My subway line linked up directly with the city of Toyota.
I met him that weekend ( a top secret from the English School of course )
The medical doctor arrived in his JAGUAR! With his wife and daughter. AMAZING!!!! NEVER FORGET THE RIDE TO THE SUSHI HOUSE IN THE BACK OF HIS BIG NEW JAG !!!!
what I remember is that the ride in the back felt special and smooth and heavy and it had what seemed like very big over sized tires.
The sushi was absolutely delicious - best I’ve ever had - 350 dollars a person.

That guy that suddenly died with Jaguar I promise I’ll find his name for you. It escapes me right now. But there is old footage where he talks about this car that he had so much to do with. You likely already know his name. But just in case you might not it might be interesting.
I keep thinking about how he died while with Jaguar far before his time.
He helped to perfect something that was timeless.
Maybe that would be a good name for the FILM

I just had a complete brake job performed for about 1200 USD on the BLACK XJR or a bit more. A bit more...under 1400 USD for sure But for all four wheels

There was a broken calliper holding my drivers side front wheel back. YIKES!
They went in and replaced absolutely everything and new brake fluid.

Worked for me on my S type . . Thanks 👍🇬🇧 BTW, just had new circuit boards and press buttons fitted to existing remotes (2) for £35 or about $43 by my local Jag specialist so no need to spend big $ ! but contacts still needed a tweak.

Just a question. I bought a new remote. I programmed it using the headlight method. It worked but them the original remote stopped working. So I reprogrammed the original remote and then the new remote stopped working. So it won't let me do two of them. Any tips? I have tried it a few times.

hi Josh. that setting sequencw for the key fob was different to how i did mine recently. had to flash the lights and other stuff. nothing about the valet button.

You should be able to program to your ca lot without issue
When I get to program the remote (I only have 1 ) after the 3rd time it stops letting me program and I hear all sorts of beeps (I can never get to 5) do I have to repeat the trunk and door open part for each time I program for each remote up to five? Or after it accepts the 1st time (after I click valet for the final 1 button press ) do I just start clicking valet 5x again and do that process 5x? When I try it gives me problems after 3x . Any suggestions?
I just followed the instructions on the replacement fob and it worked for me. I’m not sure of the problem you’re encountering.
I would suggest contacting the folks that you got the new fob from. They probably are the best resource. Good luck! Let us know what you find out.

He died at the same place where Jags were ( are ) made in England.
He would have been 55 that November of 1999.
Just to keep things in a bit of perspective that wasn’t much long after the film TITANIC CAME OUT.
Ohh and about British Racing Green
It was a hats off to the Irish in 1903 and in respect to Ireland and to the Irish for allowing them to hold their car race there .....they painted their CARS SHAMROCK GREEN
So if your own Jaguar XJR is a 2003 this turns out to be a very fitting year to have the color BRG because it all started in 1903 with what was originally intended as shamrock green to pay respect and thanks to the Irish. They provided the race way and the land and country to be used for the race.
This is how it came to be know as BRG
An early MERCEDES won the race !
Eaton the makers of our Eaton M112 supercharger I believe is an Irish-American company
And hey we got a Mercedes transmission too.
Lots of things on your car are loosely linked to that Car Race in 1903

Q: I know this has nothing to do with the XJ but I've just bought a cheap s-type with issues that i have now fixed....except for one. it came with only one key, so i pushed the boat out and paid for a replacement remote at a cost of £195, it will start the cat but wont pair, so it will not open or lock remotely, i have tried always with the key in all positions in the ignition to pair it.... but it wont pair, any suggestions... cheers.

It is so strange just an hour ago at the gym, my fob broke apart, LOL. I decided to just take it off because I do not lock my doors and I usually keep my windows down. I would rather the THUG get in my car and get out without breaking a window. There are a lot of break-ins where I live and everyone is getting the windows busted out and my car has been ransacked but there is nothing to take. I have had 2 cars stolen, 1 was a 1980 Trans Am and the other was my 1997 Jaguar XK8 convertible and both were locked. I do not lock my cars any longer. Great video though..
It’s a shame people do this. Our F250 was stolen last year. That’s why we are not posting any more content on it 😥

This is a little horror story about the details of what happened.
With winter coming in I scheduled my XJR in for a good high quality new battery.
This was for a Friday .
The timing chain broke on a Wednesday.
I had it towed in making a phone call to the shop that something had gone wrong with the engine making it stall and not start well. Possible timing chain issue.
This information DID NOT seem to get back to the mechanic.
So he thought my XJR was simply being towed in for the scheduled new battery replacement.
When I got to the shop on Monday to check back on their progress they said they put the new battery in but when they tried to start the car and run the car they found a major problem.
Awwww they should not have been running the car and it didn’t go in for a battery.
Actually they could have postponed the new battery.
The main mechanic was on a 6 week long winter holiday.
The person that took my call did not check that I was scheduled in for a battery that Friday and relay the message that the car was now in early for something much more serious.
So with new battery in I think the mechanic was trying to run the car with the broken timing chain.:(

The person at the shop that took my phone call has since QUIT. no longer works there.
I should have been more clear about postponing the new battery.
But I’m sure they knew it was being towed in because of it stalling.

I think it is a truism to say....’this’ is much more than just a luxury performance car to us.
It’s like owning and taking care of a special piece of automobile tradition, history and heritage.
The luxury and status that come with owning a JAG is really a distant secondary aspect.
Again, I believe it is true to say.
It may be the cherry on the cake.
But....The meat of the matter ...is the substance; the History, design driving experience , discovery adventure and the care and maintenance that go into keeping one of the last true Jags around.
It’s a labour of love! :)
We are proudly taking part in British Automobile Heritage That has past its day in the sun and is dead and gone. We are keeping something of an ancient history alive.
What we own is true to purist JAGUAR ROOTS.
Btw I think there might be a way of adjusting your hood mechanism so that when you pop your hood the hood goes right up by itself . ( like on some old videos ) of course I could be wrong.
I’m very curious how my first and second start will be after fixing the timing chains.
I’m a bit nervous about it. :(
