    Hi and thanks for the review - like that seriousness and "no-fuss-no-hey-guys"-atitude. I'm evaluating powerstations for our overland-rv, the only thing that keeps me off the Ecolflow Rivers is their handle on top - in my planned setup, this handle would take valuable space... other than that, it would be a buy for the River Pro...

    Thank you for the Technology Man videos on these power units. Your attention to technical detail, user perspective, and product comparatives are top tier. For the consuming market this information is vital for making informed decisions per end-user usage scenario(s). I'm in between the EB55 and River Max now, with adding the Solarsaga 100W for my passive generator. According to your videos the additional cost for the 120w Bluetti panels doesn't match up to the Solarsaga's ease of use and sturdiness. Have you done the comparison solar panel (Bluetti 120w, Solarsaga 100w, Ecoflow 160w) video yet with the paired 500w storage units? The Ecoflow 160w panel looks flimsy upon set up versus the Solarsaga 100w, but that additional 60w of charging capacity looks interesting.

      No problem glad the videos help and thanks for your kind comments. The SolarSaga is the easiest panel to use - but has the 7.9mm plug so you'll need an adapter for lots of power stations. I haven't done a full comparison of all my panels - but hope to soon!

    Comprehensive review however care should be taken with the UPS mode, as after a recent conversation with support regarding their recommendations on maintaining battery health if used as a UPS for a router and a home automation hub - Their response and I quote :-
    "Our power station can be an emergency power source (EPS). As long as the power station is plugged into AC power, it would be forced to be ON. If it is kept on this status for a long time, like weeks or months, there might be damage to the battery inside the power station. To prolong the battery life, it is recommended to use the power station as an EPS only for temporary emergencies, such as a pre-noticed or foreseen blackout."
    Seems UPS is a possible but not a recommended configuration to protect unplanned outages which is how I would expect to use a UPS.

    • @TheTechnologyMan
      @TheTechnologyMan  2 роки тому

      Thanks for the comment - useful information. Personally I'd only ever use this as a temporary UPS - for example I used it recently when we had storms and we kept losing power. I just plugged it into the router, switches etc and everything we needed to keep going - 6 of us at home needing to work! I have a proper UPS for the computer - and that's what I'd recommend for anything longer term. They are much cheaper too! And if connected to a PC they can gracefully shut down the computer too, something the EcoFlow can't do. I still think the UPS feature is very handy.

My budget is not huge, I have been considering the EcoFlow River Max/Pro, All Powers 606, Jackery 500 and also been looking at the the EcoFlow River 2's - as it will only be used occasionally I'm unsure whether it's worth the expense of the LifePo4s or whether that would be an advantage. I just ordered one on sale for $150. I see that it allows up to 25 volt input for solar panels. Would using two 12 volt batteries in series to make a 24 volt battery be a good way to recharge faster. That would probably be too high a voltage. I often have power outages. If the pair of deep cycle batteries will keep up with the power I require that would be great. Cheers!

      Thanks! 600W is the maximum with the RIver Max - so your coffee maker is just over. If it only peaks to 700W for a short time it might be ok. Check the display on your Pro and see what peak output it shows or try an energy monitoring plug. You do have the X-Boost mode but I'd be reluctant to use that for a coffee machine.

    Hello,
    A nice clear review. Can you explain what a cycle is? Is it each time the unit is completely discharged or whenever it is charged? I'm interested in this unit for daily use at home but the battery type not being Lipo4 is a concern but if never letting the it get below 20% means I'll get a long life I'll seriously consider buying one. I have a Lipo4 and a Lithium-ion PPS, as neither ever gets below 20% before being recharged I hope I'm extending their lives, mainly the Li-ion.

      You you can just divide the power requirements of the device in Watts into the capacity in Wh to get a rough idea of how long it'll run for. Allow for around 80% efficiency. So if you your smoker uses say on average a total of around 20W - you'll get around 500Wh/20W * 0.8 = 20 hours roughly.

      Thank you! The 500 cycles is only an estimate but even 10% to 90% is most of a full charge cycle so I'd imagine you'd still get some degradation after 500 cycles or so. You'll need to check the oil filled radiator - I'd imagine that will be over the capabilities of the River Max's inverter.

      That's a big panel! The solar input is rated as 200W or 12A at 10-25V. So that's be your limitation. If the panel has the correct voltage you should be able to get the max 200W off your panel.

    • @TheTechnologyMan
      @TheTechnologyMan  2 роки тому

      That's full charge discharge cycles. So unless you're doing that every day it should last longer than 800 days. And even then that's only down to 80% of the original capacity so it's not like it becomes unusable.

    If the internal battery goes bad will the extra battery continue to work if you buy a new battery.

    • @TheTechnologyMan
      @TheTechnologyMan  2 роки тому

      It depends how bad the internal battery gets. If its capacity just decreases the add on battery will help. If it dies completely you'd need to get it back to EcoFlow.

    The battery type is the only thing that is a shame about EcoFlow's power stations, it's a shame they use NMC instead of LFP, it's especially a problem since the battery isn't replaceable.
    The Bluetti EB70S has everything I need except for a good screen. Put the battery of a Bluetti into the EcoFlow or the screen of the EcoFlow onto the Bluetti and it's perfect.

    • @TheTechnologyMan
      @TheTechnologyMan  2 роки тому

      Is the EcoFlow showing 44W? If so that sounds on the low side. I'd get a cheap energy monitoring plug and check your battery's capacity. Even at 80% efficiency you should be able to get (576 Wh x 0.8) / 44W = 10.5 h run time if the fan really does draw a constant 44W.

    I just got the River Pro and my capacity test was worse than yours. 497 watts out of 720 claimed, 68% which is horrible. Most of the price is based on capacity and this way over stated. I believe there is some sort of parasitic draw on these. It took about 900 watts to fully charge the unit but my wattmeter was still reading around 6-9 watts after it was 100% and the Ecoflow was reading zeros on input/output.

    • @TheTechnologyMan
      @TheTechnologyMan  2 роки тому

      That does seem a fair bit off. Do you have another energy meter you can try - I've found them very variable! Also make sure you leave it plugged in charging for a couple of hours even after it says it's full to make sure it's at full capacity. I'd also send EcoFlow an email. Good luck.

    The Eco flow has two massive problems. Firstly it has no Bluetooth capability. Secondly you cannot install the app unless the unit has an active internet connection. Think about how stupid that is. This means if you're in a location where the internet fails you cannot actually install the app in your device even if your local network is still operating!

I could do a straight comparison video of similar units - but this video alone is over 20 minutes long so you then wouldn't get all the information you might want for this unit.
