I'm working on my tiny bonsai trees! I start with the Komono size, then the Shohin size and finally my Mame size bonsai. Today's update is my Ficus Ginseng Bonsai.
Love the longer videos! I've been missing seeing you about every other day. lol I find myself wanting to work on my few starts of trees everyday! ...but I just water & watch them and work on my patience. I can't wait for the day I have enough trees to work on something every day or so! Also, I'm finding there is MUCH more to Bonsai than meets the eye. I'm so thankful you share the finer bits of information. For sure...I learn something new every time I watch a video. Thank you, Nigel, for always sharing a little something else.

So far all I have is a shrub I dug up from the yard (sorry, I’ve not taken the time to identify) and some jade plants. Oh! And a Yaupon I dug up from the yard before hubby cut it down. I’m getting my trees mainly from the woods around us.
Bonnie Hyden , that mix seems prime, but a little pricey for me atm. I have found a albino oak seedling i collected, being it was on a busy fishing trail. Im happy with looking for my yamadori and coming back when im ready, doing some trimming and training

I was thinking about your broken pot issue some more. Thin ceramic ware will crack in winter simply because water expands when it freezes. So I was thinking that all your thin walled ceramic pots should be vacated in winter, taking out the tree and putting the base where the roots are in a plastic bag surrounded by yard leaves and let them sit out the winter in a plastic bag surrounded by leaves. Or you may want to experiment and take a thin walled ceramic pot and put the whole pot in a plastic bag and put leaves over it. and tie it up good. For extra assurances, you may want to add a layer of insulation around the pot for winter. Just wrap the insulation around it. The problem is that it rains and then freezes, so it is important rain water doesn't get in the pot during winter. The best bet would be to take the plant out of the pot, protect the root ball with leaves and a plastic bag. A lot of work, I know. Just a suggestion.

Nigel, at least one of your small trees seems to have a dead zone on the trunk. Have you considered detailing it like is done on the much larger trees? There's an on-line company called Micro-Mark that deals mainly in scale model train kits that has a line of tools specifically for small work. They're mainly surgical tools and one set is labeled as micro chisels that would be great for detailing dead zones on the small bonsai trees.....IF a person wanted to try that. Very lovely cascade cedar. Your bougainvilleas are looking very good. Hope that they will be in bloom for your fall show. They are such forgiving plants. I enjoy growing them in my garden and as bonsai. How is your son's bougainvillea doing? I've heard it said that it is much more difficult to create a small bonsai than a large one. Do you prefer small or large bonsai? As I get older my collection has changed some to smaller plants. It gets harder each year to lift the plants/pots. But, at least I can continue in the hobby. Thanks for sharing your work on these small plants and the explanation of the different "smaller" sized bonsai names.

sorry for any spam on recent videos, I’m just worried about my juniper because the leaves are very hard and some of the bark and leaves look dried up. I’m worried it’s dying on me and idk what to do. I water the leaves and the surface soil. I get the roots wet by a video I saw of leaving it in a water bowl for the roots to suck up the water for a little bit of time (doing this once a week). thank you for the recommendation link and hopefully it lives
I got my bonsai end of April so I haven’t fertilized it because honestly I don’t really know how. Also, I don’t have spider mites because my tree is indoors most time. I will start putting it outside now
Jenn - The Juniper is an outdoor tree. Keeping it indoors will kill it. Also, I hope I'm wrong, but with conifers once the needles start to dry out it's usually already too late. Their roots die first and then the foliage. All the best.
Hi Nigel! I noticed you had a silver maple in frame around the 0:44 second mark. Would you consider doing a video on those? I have several silver maple bonsais myself, and most people don't advise using them. I have found them to make great bonsais. Thanks Nigel!

I have my Grandfathers live steam locomotive sitting behind me right now, it's a Britannia class. He built it in Perth in the late 1960's. I'm hoping to find the time some day to get it running. I'm the third generation to own it! I'll have to feature it in a video!

Just stumbled over this video of yours. Nice! However, sorry to correct you, Nigel, but Mame (Japanese for bean) are the smallest and are usually no taller than 5 cm although everything up to 10 cm are defined as Mame Bonsai. Shohin are the next level up to 25cm. Due to space and living on the fourth floor all my Bonsai - and those that yearn to be - are Mame or Shohin.
A tip for Bougainvellia is; if water it good it will produce more leaves. And if u give it less water or keep it thursty then it will produce more flowers. U try try it. It always works
So I have a Japanese dwarf maple tree. I bought it in its third season. The canopy of this tree seems perfect for how I picture it too be. It's mid July now. My question is. I want to repot my tree. Should I wait till next spring for repotting? It has regular potting soil in a 12" pot.
You can re pot mid summer if you don't do a lot of root pruning and you keep the tree in a semi shaded area until it recovers. Spring is definitely the best time to re pot, if the tree is healthy, you can do a lot of root work.

I'm trying to learn how to carve a "root stand" -- you know, those lovely gnarled stands that look as though they're entwined roots? Well, I've found images of blanks with holes drilled, planks "before and after" -- but nothing on how to get from blank to finished. Do you have any step-by-step videos, or can you recommend any? THANKS for all your delightful videos!

You can easily, the only problem is the roots grow through the drainage screens and as they get thicker, it is impossible to remove the tree without wrecking the mesh holes. It is better to have the screens separate!

Thanks, I like what you've done with the ginseng Ficus! Could you tell me what kinds of Ficus they graft together to creat the Ginseng? I believe one of them is F. microcarpa, but I'm not sure if that's the root or the foliage that's been grafted on. My ginseng began to sprout shoots from the root stock, so now I have a choice of two different Ficus in one tree! I'd like to know what they are so I can decide which to keep, the upper graft died back partially so I'm tempted to get rid of it.

Most of the trees go outside in a more shady spot until they recover. Watering is very important in the week or so, after the work is done to the tree. The only trees that I keep in the greenhouse are the ones that can grow aerial roots and I can't fit all of them inside, so even many of those have to go out on the benches.

Is it possible to print drainage holes smaller than your soil particle size? Then you wouldn’t need the drainage screen.
You can easily, the only problem is the roots grow through the drainage screens and as they get thicker, it is impossible to remove the tree without wrecking the mesh holes. It is better to have the screens separate!

Merci beaucoup, je fais mon travail à temps plein sur UA-cam maintenant, et j'ai environ 170 arbres dans ma collection. La plupart ne sont pas ce que vous appelez des bonsaïs finis, mais plutôt une expérience! Je ne me considère pas comme un proffesional bonsaï, mais plus d'un UA-camr bonsaï!

Thanks, I like what you've done with the ginseng Ficus! Could you tell me what kinds of Ficus they graft together to creat the Ginseng? I believe one of them is F. microcarpa, but I'm not sure if that's the root or the foliage that's been grafted on. My ginseng began to sprout shoots from the root stock, so now I have a choice of two different Ficus in one tree! I'd like to know what they are so I can decide which to keep, the upper graft died back partially so I'm tempted to get rid of it.
I am trying African Wisteria in 3 inch leap pot, so far so good, it's about 3 months now.

Another great VDO as always. One query...after pruning, do you keep these trees outside or in Green house?
Most of the trees go outside in a more shady spot until they recover. Watering is very important in the week or so, after the work is done to the tree. The only trees that I keep in the greenhouse are the ones that can grow aerial roots and I can't fit all of them inside, so even many of those have to go out on the benches.
