    3 of my assumptions:
1.They were establishing dominance. (the way they ripped/handed the plants from each other)
    2. One man stole the other mans high school sweetheart 30 years ago (never resolved)
    Or
    3. This was filmed at gun point.

I believe it was 2. One of them started landscaping and got a girlfriend, she loved his artistic style with yards. The other saw Jesse's girl and wish he had her, so boom bonsai happened. She was Owen Wilson wowed by how small he could get them. He wished that he had Jesse's girl and he got her.

      4. The Bonsai maker is either a former alc or something quite close I reckon. Look at how he shakes. And he also puts the therapeutic aspect forward.

I've been doing bonsai for around 40 years. I have two comments on this video. 1) If you work a tree heavily, like this guy is doing, and then immediately re-pot it, you're going to almost certainly kill the tree. You should wait about a year before re-potting a heavily worked tree. You want to make sure the tree has recovered and is healthy before doing major root work. I'm sure this guy knows that and just wanted to give a demonstration of what the whole process of starting a new bonsai involves. 2) You can find lots of starter trees for way less than $50. People new to bonsai should understand that you are probably going to kill some trees as you learn the art. Don't blow a lot of money on something expensive. Accidentally killing it will discourage you from learning a beautiful art form.

These videos are great exposure, but are so misleading with tons of holes in the process. I've been practicing Bonsai for about 12 years now and it wasn't until the past 5 years that my garden has really taken off.
***Mistake number one: making a finished bonsai right away***
Between all the pruning, repotting and wiring....that's a receipe for a stressed out and soon to die plant....
      Don't give up!

    1:07 Prior to WWII...
1:43 The Beginning of the Bonsai Workshop
2:12 The first step: find front and find the height
2:31 The tools: concave cutter, bonsai sheer, wire cutters, root rack
2:57 The first step is to get the ratio.
3:14 The next step: find the branches. The lowest and most dominant branch.
3:43 The next step is bending the branches. Get the right size/gauge wire.
4:24 Use lighter wires to bend the branches from the bottom. Go out to the tips and don't crush the buds.
4:57 The signs of a healthy tree
    .
5:00 In bonsai we are trying to make the look of an ancient tree in nature. Contorted but beautiful angles.
    5:43 Repotting the plant.
6:19 When raking the roots, you just want to knock the soil out.
    6:33 Flatten to root mass.
    6:44 Prepare the pot
    .
7:14 Use wire to keep the tree secure in the pot.
7:23 Use bonsai soil. A free-draining soil mix.
7:40 Positioning of the tree in the pot is usually 1/3 off to the side, with the apex greeting you
    .
7:55 Use the wire to anchor the tree.
8:26 Make sure the new soil is firmly planted.
    8:33 Think about landscaping.
8:46 Dunk tree to remove air pockets.
    9:12 Add moss to finish
    .
9:34 Bonsai is done for the neatness of the effect. Attention to detail is important.
    2:40 It's Coach Steve!

    • @WTHFX
      @WTHFX 5 років тому +1

Most of the roots that came off are the ones that are circling the sides and bottom of the pot. That contact leads to cold/heat exposure, perching water, girdling, or air exposure - all of which causes these roots to be dead or mostly dead. The important roots in a pine will be slightly swollen, with white-to-slightly orange tips. These roots are active with supportive mycorrhizae and you remove them at the tree's peril. I'm not supporting what Mr. Levin did in this video - you never want to do all that at once on a japanese white pine - but his root work wasn't all that aggressive.

    • @WTHFX
      @WTHFX 5 років тому

@Corn Pop It's possible I suppose, but generally the tree is tied in so the roots will circle and eventually completely fill the pot, repel water and given enough time, girdle and choke the plant to death. Root reduction is necessary, but the older the tree, the less frequent the repot. Masahiko Kimura has 400 yr old Junipers that he hasn't repotted in 40 years - old, refined trees reach a sort of stasis (this is particularly true of junipers).

Please note that this is a bonsai nursery, the tree he potted had been grown around ten years in a small nursery pot as a pre bonsai. Yamadori or collected trees must have their roots cut drastically, same for common nursery material as well. This is why we cut in late winter early spring. Tropicals get cut after spring. Don't leave more foliage than the root mass can support, and don't leave more root mass than the foliage can support, more roots than foliage can reduce transpiration and with too much water or improper soil healthy roots can rot. Balance and timing are key when cutting.

I lived in Asia for more then 10 years. One visit I did not leave for 8 years. While in Japan studying koi and goldfish an old man explained to me why Chinese and Japanese make Bonsai trees. Chinese and Japanese would travel far and wide all over Asia and bring home many interesting trees and other plant. They had so many trees in their gardens and found if they miniaturize them they could fit me in there. First they found small pot and cutting helped a lot and over the years it all came together to what they have today. I visited as many gardens as I could over the years. In !971 Hong Kong and Singapore plus Japan Had very beautiful gardens. Probably not around any more but I would guess most of the foliage was moved to other places.

ΘΩΜΑΣ Γ.Ο.Χ there are soil mixes made especially for bonsai, generally speaking they are very well draining, so lots of perlite and/or pea sized pebbles combined with a low-nutrient soil component.
