- Thought I'd post this previously unseen recording of a Dylan press conference from 1986. If you'd like to license any of it contact me on brendon AT filmstretch.com.au. I shot it in Brett Whiteley's studio and it's sat on the shelf since then. I found the old tape and thought I'd share it to celebrate the 24th May. Happy Birthday Bob Dylan and thanks for everything you've shared with us over the years. Brendon Stretch 2013 - filmstretch video production Sydney
Someday this clip will be in a museum so people can see what an honest and direct person spoke like.
Tulsa, Oklahoma. Museum called Bob Dylan Center. Incredible.
Sorry did you just call Dylan "honest and direct"? You probably think he worked at a carnival.
For once I'd like an interview with Dylan to begin. I'd just like to take this opportunity to thank you Mr. Dylan for all the years of hard work.
He's been thanked in many ways but I wouldn't really say he'd related very well to his adoring audiences
Bob dylan is a shy introvert. He is also very smart and well spoken. People dont realize the stress he endured in the 60s and with his divorce. He is a deep person
He's not, he's very outgoing with people he knows.
Do you know him....?
lol relax he’s been married about 3 or 4 times now.
Good thing we got you BWaters, atleast you understand Bob Dylan.
Seems like most people who get the mantle "voice of a generation" forced on them get crushed by it's weight to varying degree.
Oh my gosh ... I can't imagine having to do this ... it would be beyond mind-numbing! He's a musician, a poet, a philosopher ... a thinker, not a talker. Seriously, his eyes look glazed over most of the times.
What a great gift to dylanlovers. He's so unique...i love it when he talks. The little dylan accent combined with the quick shy dylan grins...lovin' it
In England I’m loving it also
Never seen this I’m a Dylan lover he’s fabulous fabulous beautiful
I must say he really does LOOK BEAUTIFUL in Brett Whitleys studio! Like a Rembrandt or a Brett Whitley!
Unfortunately he’s a shamble that sold his
soul by this time
wow - I went to this press conference, it was Monday Feb 10th 1986 I believe, the day of the first Sydney show. We pinched Bob's Perrier water glass afterwards as a momento. Went to all 6 Sydney shows as well.
Thanks for posting FilmStretch
I've recently listened to as many Bob D. interviews as I can find. He can be very funny at times (in addition to his general wisdom about life). One takeaway from many of the interviews is how the reporters often don't let him finish his thought after they ask a question. It is like Bob. D. only begins to answer a question and boom, someone else asks another question. It is as if they keep trying to crack the riddle of Bob. D. and really understand the phenomenon, but they cut him off before he can give deeper and more thoughtful answers. Crazy. Makes me wonder what he would have said if they could just listen for a minute...
I liked it when he said that during his European tour most of his audiences were foreign.
Funny and wise -- that's how his daughter Desi describes him also.
One of the most charismatic persons ever to walk the earth
❤️
Yep
No, no! He's only pretending to be charismatic.
I'd love to sit in the same room with Bob Dylan and feel that special aura he seems to exude
Bob Dylan is so bloody exciting! I just love that he is truly an extension of a Traveling Poet from yesteryear!
The greatest songwriter who will ever live.
Yes indeed amen 🇸🇪🙏🌸🌺
Nah, it's Jacques Brel or Cole Porter for me.
I'd give that title to Joanie Mitchell and some others
"Yesterday's gone, tomorrow's not promised." Bob Dylan 1986

Smeargle and so are you......lol!
Hey didn't see your post but I guess we tuned in to the same thing. :)

"If you don't have the experience
You're disposable" relavant more than ever here in 2020
Such GENUINE RESPONSES from Beloved BOB!
Bob Dylan extremely dedicated after years of performing and they keep asking him 20 year old questions. I believe word was out that he had writers block at this time in his career. But all through the changes that music endured Bobby is still writing good stuff. Thank God for his talent and sense of humor still intact. Peace, Michael Angelo
GENIUS on display!!!!!!!!
This is such a uniquely authentic interview! I saw Bob in 1986, and I loved Brett Whitely and his art since 1980, when I first saw it. Was lucky enough to meet Brett at a party in North Sydney in November 1981. Brett also loved and revered Dylan since the sixties. There was a natural connection between Brett and Bob. I'm so thankful for this video!
"i am only bob dylan when I have to be. the rest of the time I am just myself" Jesus, that is beautiful and thoughtful. It seems flippant at first, but kind of explains Bob's view on himself perfectly
Don't you think Jesus already knows that?
I have loved this man deeply and intensely since the age of 12.
Kevin of Parker very well said.
Kevin of Parker, really. I can't imagine suddenly becoming so famous but it also sort of destroys part of what allowed him or anyone to be creative to begin with to be yourself.
Lord Dickens Yes, Public Bob & Actual Robert.
Bob put so much on the table with his particular form of art that there was something for so many of us. What amazes me is that Dylan's songs worked for me as a 12 year old in 1967 and despite years of change and I mean real change Dylan's body of work still does the job now.
The Master of riddles (we could ponder and ponder some more as we got older) - empathy and contrived authenticity, he knows how to make us all feel validated through glimpses that are sometimes gentle, sometimes strong and complete enough to strike a familiar chord, one that shares a sacred secret moment or something from the universal archetype that resonates with a generation, a truly rare gift "....they [the songs] can get into peoples' subconscious minds, maybe in a round about way and they do make people feel better, they feel that maybe sometimes what they are thinking and feeling they can hear it articulated in a song..... I'm not so crazy to feel that way"
In a little hilltop village they gambled for my clothes
I bargained for salvation and they gave me a lethal dose
I offered up my innocence and got repaid with scorn
"Come in" she said
"I'll give you shelter from the storm".
beautifully said - thank you
fun to see Dylan actually answering questions....now, if we could have heard the questions, it would be very cool
Agree - it would be great if the questions were audible! Need a tardis to zip back to 1986 and re-video.... :)
It's also interesting seeing him reacting to the first signs of political correctness when he's accused of being 'sexist' in tight connection to my heart.
The secret is to get a female interviewer.
@@cockoffgewgle4993 Exactly
Just wrote same question/statement
Thanks for restoring this so that we can see this side of Bob Dylan down under. =>
+Doctor GrooVy you are most welcome - our pleasure to share it with the world :)
Saw Dylan in Perth in West Australia in 1966 on his famous world tour, with what would become the Band. As a 16 year old it was a life changing concert. Dylan playing piano on Ballad of a Thin Man and sliding off the stool. Leopard Skin Pillbox Hat, Like a Rolling Stone. Visions of Johanna played acoustically. None of these songs had even been released yet in Australia. The best.
Wow🇸🇪🙏
I love Dylan and The Band! Good for you Robin!
I always thought he had such a cuteness behind his stern look. I really think there is a sweet person in there.😘
He’s mischievous
What a Scoop! This is golden. Thanks for uploading. "That's too much to lay on anybody";the responsibility of a better world.
Glad you enjoyed it! Feels like quite historic footage to own :)
I hope he lives a long time and is happy.
He seems to have been quite unhappy for most of his life. I saw him in concert and he looked miserable on stage (I was in the front row). Everybody has their own challenges, I guess.
Andre Newcomb ... he will and he is ! thanks Andre.
Ron Schaffer appearances can be deceiving
@@solodolotrevino Joni Mitchell, who knew him better than you or I, said that he was a fake. That his whole act is an affectation. So pretending to be something you are not gain really drain somebody.
Amem.
Aleluia.
I like when he forgets about being "Bob Dylan" and just acts like himself. This is nice.
Bob Dylan" Well... if you've got a few minutes after I could show ya." Awesome interview and great insight to the mind of Bob Dylan. He is very funny to. Thank You FilmStretchAustralia for posting this!!
Glad you enjoyed it - the world's richer for having our Bob :)
It's love it when he quotes a song that he's yet to write i.e. "Most of the Time" and "Things Have Changed".
What time points in this video?
10.35 for one :)
Bob is relaxed but very intellectually nimble here. He sort of shadow boxes with the questions, if he is not interested he may just agree or disagree right away, like taking glancing blows. Or there is the classic punctuated comedic retort, "I said that?!". But he is sincere here, and you see how he is very intently listening and we all know how that ability translates into the quality of his body of work. He remains honest and that is consistent with what makes his songs so compelling.
evilmariatheband your comment is so well written :)
"I don't look for things to write about. They just happen to me, you know." OMG!
Ya, like press conferences...
Thank you, this is a great view of Bob. What a face.
one in a million face eh?!
I am endlessly fascinated by it!
Just a FACE??? One in a billion artist - poet AND "song and dance man", what a VOICE - weird, huh? and yet we hear HEAR him, and it is always personal to each of us who hears him. There are many others who have a face similar to Bob (Zimmerman) Dylan's face, but there is only ONE divinely-inspired artist that is Bob. I think Shakespeare, whoever he was, was the last one with such verbal genius.............cheers!
what a face is correct..
Agreed!?marvelously sculpted nose…❤
One of the best interviews I’ve had the great pleasure to watch.
Omg he stared into my soul was not expecting that lol. He truly is fascinating. Strangely beautiful, too.
like can he stop
Excellent
Yeah he’s cute
He did that to me in the audience a couple years back, made me feel like God was looking into my eyes...
@@mrtambourineman6107 Same Thing happend to me. I must have caught his attention as i was near the front row he just intensely into my eyes with his kind of typical cold expression that was hard to read. Still not sure what his intention or motivation was. Happened in 2009
It's fun to watch every single interview and every step of his life. The guy is something else. Study study
Imagine what it’s like to be asked the same damn questions for years and years and years..
One of the biggest musical and lyricist talents ever 😊
Yes!!🌸🌺
Tight connection to my heart video was actually fantastic. Love Dylan in the 80s.
It was awful haha come on. Love the song but the video fantastic? That's a joke.
Have you every watched an interview where you only hear 2/8ths of the questions, but the interviewee is so fascinating you watch anyway? I just did. He is so grounded and balanced, I love the patience he shows and the way he respects every question (person), no matter the question and despite how long he has been doing the same (at the time of this interview). Even though he says artists (poets) take time to fully develop, without the experience etc etc. However from his first interviews (60's) he seemed to arrive the same fully formed humanist artist - and we are all the better for it.
79 now....one of my heroes, my virtual dream lover, since 1965,,66...This guy, and Leonard Cohen🙏❤️
Not seen this. Thankyou. Some of the questions are so dumb. All of Bobs answers are perfect.
I found myself rocking in my seat as I watched this. I like noticing that Bob has that habit too. Someone once acted like it was a weird thing to do, but I hope no one ever made Bob feel bad about it. It's cute
This is such a Christmas present for all the hardcore Dylan fans.
Is that Van Morrison on your profile? I’m a big fan of Van!
@@bengomes8845 Yes, it's the cover image of his "Into the Music" album!
Can’t believe the way they interrogate him about his creative process
Interested by how he withdraws from the melee clearly reflecting on some personal realisations
If ever there was better explanation of how & why he is a worthy winner of Nobel Prize . . . .
Poet!
cool, thanks
I have other footage of some of these questions shot at a different angle. Nice of you to share this.
People are looking for a guru. Bobby is so patient, kind and loving. I know I can never know what this man is thinking at any given time. That being said, they could let him finish his thought when he is speaking. May the Lord of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob bless this man eternally. He said, "It all comes from God." No question. No hesitation.
I notice in this 1986 press conference he uses both the phrases "Most Of The Time" and "Things Have Changed."
matthew tempest Common phrases
matthew tempest -Read Suze Rotolo’s account “Free Wheelin’ Times” about what he was like when he got his Columbia contract. She points out all kinds of quirky expressions and mannerisms you never noticed until she describes his overall persona. Then you see him doing it constantly.
I was thinking this exact same thing
Fine to have this possibility to hear this back... from long ago! 🌺❤️🌹👌
"We live here in the day, in the present time. Yesterdays gone, Tomorrows not promised so this is all we have !" profundity right there. those are lyrics for a song he just whipped off the top of his head !
brilliant !
Johnny cash bob dylon aren't trying to change the world. they are only expressing the way they view it. every thing else is up to you.
I am so happy to have seen this amazing interview.Wow Dylan will always be relevant.Amazing
How much shit they ask to Bob Dylan an he still has the patience to answer.
Sometimes I get the strange feeling that Bob is really a thousand different people all wrapped up in one body.He is literally the "everyman". I see him at times as a kind of unfortunate-a person with an amazing gift who at the same time yearns for the anonymity of being a normal unknown guy.
I think you're about right....
bluesborn its the demons don't be fooled
He said he had dominion over them..in chronicles..I wonder
yeah sure, the demons, thats a normal thing to say. ..
@@groomedtodie the best way I have ever heard Dylan and his interviews explained
Seems to me this is one of the few interviews where Bob is actually not trying to put on the reporters. He actually seems to be giving thougjtful answers. Hadnt seen this interview before. Thanks for posting.
He has the kindest eyes for such a hard case
he looks very creepy now unfortunately
This is the most coherent I've ever seen Bob. Either he was high a lot, ADD, or bipolar.
Now what! This is why I started following you. I am a Reiki Master. Rocking back and forth. Like a boat on a restless sea. Restlessly mesmerizing me.
Absolutely wonderful ..thankyou for posting this...x
It's like he's up on trial with all those questions .Bob handles it like a star though
Cant hear the questions but great answers. That was great. Thanks.
Thank you for the gift!
THANK YOU for sharing!
Interesting to hear him using phrases which would later go on to be song titles such as ‘Most of the time’ and ‘Things have changed’. Makes me wonder if the genis of these songs were in the recesses of his mind even at this stage. Maybe just a coincidence.
I love his eyes and his talent too! Darn those eyes and curls
He Will read It....he Will find out !
Oh Mary?!
This seems like torture for the guy. Lots of people seem to want him to explain himself. Just listen to his music if you understand it good ... if you don't that's ok too.
Exactly!👍
They were mostly newspaper writers out of their depth. They showed respect to Bob and tried to be kind to him. This is mostly fun and a gold mine for us who love Bob and his music..He was full of chemicals, not making it easy for him or the questioners. He obliquely refers to "drugs" several times.
the only artist I would ever want to meet...would love to have him over for dinner!
Yes. What does he like to eat? Geeze why didn't they ask him that?
I would like to have him for dinner! Effing yummy
@@karinkahurangi390 Maybe we could share? I'll just be happy nibbling on his ankles.💖
Someone with a fine degree of boldness, brutal honesty, and self-understanding.
this interview just helped me with a problem i been having.... thanks for posting very enlightening interview.. thought id learned everything from him (including the books) but wow - just one interview like this was amazing. :)
glad to hear that - he's a bit of a gem :)
what problem was that?
#kevin of parker, I so glad you caught that line Bob said. And to the others who can see he's doing the best he can with his deep love of music. Glad he's around that's my main point.
❤❤❤Absolutely Love Bob Allen Dylan ❤❤❤
I just LOVE how it cuts out right when Bob is starting to talk about the people who are trying to rule the entire world...but I don't care now.
I have cared about it in the past, but I've sorta gotten over it now.
I think he knows now that this age in which we're living is set on a path it simply can't get off of. To interfere is really futile.
Around 7:00 - "Yeah, I know I've influenced people, but... a lot of people have influenced me."
What a humble thing to say.
Movement... It's what I perceive & witness. Rocking to stay in play. To be comfortable. Tired and exposed to pursue and yet give into media for your band to preform for the public. To continue. Just continue... Spider John, "Continue."
amazing he mentioned yevtushenko...(sp?) he actually came my my small town...--knew someone here...he read....but asked students to read first......He sot of got mad and said ;WHERE THE GUTS!!!!!!? ' LOL..WELL IT AIN'T EASY TO BE A successful world level poet.writer. anything.....we went out with a few...and got drunk on vodka! fun...amazing as he talked and was just a person..but had charisma and intelligence.....
Notice when Brett Whiteley asks a question @12:48 and Dylan really pays attention and gives an honest answer. I feel thats a rare glimpse into how he would respond to a friend or peer.
Many thanks for sharing Bob's interview.
‘He’s got a vision in mind...’ I like the ominousness to this
I love that you finally shared this. But this is a very disturbing interview in that these people are mostly putting Bob on the defense. Why do you do this? Why do you do that? Do you consider yourself to be blah blah blah? No wonder he disliked interviews. I seen thousands of interviews.
Thanks for sharing. This is great.
Octagon Seventynine Thank you - it’s a bit of a gem
At 60 years old, I am just now really discovering Bob Dylan. What a waste of so many years. Despite his many gifts and talents and the money and fame they have brought him, I still feel the pain radiating from his soul and I want nothing more than to comfort him. It’s not that his pain is any greater than any other human’s living in this world, but his poet’s soul experiences it on a more profound level (or it seems that way to me.) Thank you Lord for the gift of Bob Dylan and his soul-stirring music. Artists today, which should not even be mentioned in the same breath with the great Dylan, could certainly learn a whole lot from this man’s humility and grace.
I really think his pain comes from him selling out to the -----, which he admitted in an interview a few years ago.
I Enjoyed the interview Tq
'bob dylan doesn't ever think about bob dylan'-well, not me....i'm thinking about him! what a charismatic son of a b@!?h. Man, he is cute during interviews...spilling his words of wisdom, while covering his face and being all sweet and shy. He's so unique...luv it!
That’s too much to lay on anybody. That was never my intention to be responsible or an example for anybody.
Es war auch nie MEINE Absicht, ein Beispiel für Andere zu sein! Das hat GOTT entschieden!
There's Bob Dylan and there's the rest. He would never say that of course and rightly so. But I'm allowed to. Take anyone of any age and have them listen to Bob Dylan, especially songs like Hollis Brown, desolation row, visions of Joanna, my back pages, Oxford Town, talkin world war III blues...the poetry, the mystery, the education they would receive from those songs alone is more than they'd ever learn in school. Soon there will be a time when Bob will no longer be with us and perhaps only then some people will realise how privileged we were to be alive at the same time as Bob Dylan.
Although I can’t listen to this here, I will when back to hotel. But even silent, I love him. Such a beautiful face.
a genious : great poet, great singer, great musician, a big man
Actually, Dylan is 6 feet 3 inches tall, so he is a big man. It just doesn't come through on camera.
The best. Isn’t it enough…. All the amazing music, songs, poetry…yet they want more.
Bob in "86" too awesome!
Too bad most of the questioners' could not be heard.......still, wonderful to see Dylan in a good mood with the "press"............ (I wish I had sub-title app still on YT! ) Many thanks to poster................cheers
Liebster Bobby, ich bin sehr, sehr glücklich!
Ah, Dylan’s favorite thing about being famous - the press conference.
Lol...for sure 😁
He still has "Minnesota nice" in him, very respectful to the reporters.
Das ist und bleibt ein absolut faszinierender Augen"blick"!
For someone who answers in black and white, he is a very colourful character. Love the honestly. Love the music. You only have to justify yourself to yourself. I admire that integrity.
This is the first time I've seen Bobby Zimmerman give an interview, and I believe this is probably the person known by his real friends. Now I can see the person who made music with the Band and others who insist on the real person rather than a persona. Thanks for sharing this.
Thanks for putting this up
"They don't keep the commodities going..." Brilliant.
Quite different from other interviews in the U S, maybe he did not feel attacked and bullied by the inteviewers....much more relaxed and laid back.
Or he’s blasted... haha
I love how he basically gets silenced. the moment the topic becomes the media itself, the camera starts skipping and eventually stops.
I know, it's like when trump start bashing the media, they cut away from the rally😅
Wish the questions were more clearly audible but I always love a Dylan interview and this was no exception.
I also wish they wouldn’t interrupt his answers.
You are a very honest man
