Previously Unseen Bob Dylan Press Conference - Rare Uncut Interview (1986)

- On 18 August 1986, Bob Dylan held a press conference at the National Film Theatre in London. Promoting his latest acting venture, Hearts of Fire, Dylan shared a stage with director Richard Marquand, producer Iain Smith, and fellow cast members Fiona Flanagan and Rupert Everett. In a remarkably long interview, the usually-reticent Dylan answered questions on a range of subjects including how he came to be involved in the film, why he wasn't writing funny songs about Ronald Reagan, the timeless power of The Times They Are a Changin', and moving on from his work in the 1960s.
Only three minutes of the Hearts of Fire press conference footage made it into ITN's bulletin on the day of recording. The original rushes of the interview were recently recovered and digitised by the ITN Archive team, and are being shared publicly here for the first time.

No wonder he messes with journalists. Worst questions possible.
I'm sure that is the journalist/biographer Phillip Norman asking the 1st question to Dylan, and continous further impertinent questions trying to provoke a reaction. Dylan just shrugs him off like a fart blowing in the wind.
LOL! That’s what I love about him!
I ask again, “where is MY driver and limousine?”
- H.G. Wills not
"Like a fart blowing in the wind". is that you Bob?
Thanks for posting this video. I was a paid extra for this movie. I was involved in some of the concert filming which took place in Bristol. It was such a memorable day. Watching Bob do his thing and everybody trying to coax him into singing or saying something when the cameras were not rolling. Bob spent much of the day just sitting on the edge of the drum riser riffing on his guitar. We all had to scream and shout when the various scenes were shot. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a turkey of a movie. But great memories, especially for somebody like me as a lifelong Dylan fan.
My condolences. This movie sucked.
(These people who gathered at this press conference .. were they trying to out do each other by asking more and more idiotic questions..)
Seriously, poor Bob.
Think about it though, what is someone really going to ask? If you was to interview Van Gogh, what to ask?
The very second an "artistic type" gets asked questions, the integrity of their art is questioned, nature of the beast, as they say,
I've watched this before and each time I cant help feeling sorry for Bob. These people had great opportunities to ask intelligent questions but they didn't use their brains to really connect with Bob. He would have opened up more if they'd done their homework on better questions.
This isn't 'previously unseen', I seen it nearly forty years ago.
me too… in some book about a prince. wonderfully attention seeking
@@yardarm5 what was the connection between prince and dylan historically?
So you want a cookie?
Your da mann..
Long live rock and roll
I was 8 days old when this was filmed.
That one had some zingers 😂 ❤ “ maybe you’ll be around”
I wonder why journalists haven’t developed a culture of self critisism within they profession.
Why don’t they write: ”Reporter N.N. asked idiotic questions from Mr Dylan” or ”Newspaperman N.N. exposed his total stupidity in front of the international press.” Or ” Photographer N.N. was caught on trying to shoot a singer visiting toilet.”
Reporters should be paid best, when they catch each other from stupidity and provocation.
It's really not that serious.
Dylan once admitted he did this film this for the money. He had to have known how dreadful it was. I'm glad he said he couldn't have written this script but wouldn't say why.😅
Such feeble questions - does this mean you won't be trying? Will they be protest songs? Are you looking forward to working here?
You know the film's a weeper when there's a box of Kleenex in the back of the Benz. 😎
Bob looks handsome❤
1986, the year when Vecna’s plans came into fruition.
Dangly earring Bob
so what!
@@user-ek3ir5dr8ichill bro, it’s one of my favorite bob eras. Wtf.
Made me think of the movie There's Something About Mary
They have no idea what to ask him.
😭
He looks like the hand-washing merchant meme man.😂
rupert everett straight from an all night coke party
Note the clear indication of this trivia: Bob Dylan is left handed.
He's ambidextrous
I'm sure he's not. I'm sure he scribbled his signature left handed.
@@Anthony-hu3rj He is right-handed, but does most autographs with his left hand.
I've seen him write with either hand.
so WHAT
If you think journalism is f**cked up now, it was always - just not as available.
Dylan starts to speak after 9 minutes and 20 seconds .. i save these minutes for you by telling..
I know Bob Dylan does not like the press, he is more of a man of solitude Elizabeth 💞
Sara--he had the most children with her. I thought the vid was going to reveal his favorite love
The right words: "hows that gonna help Billy sell chickens?"
Everything about this movie and all that surrounded it is so forgettable. Yet Dylan.
Man, Tom Baker looks really rough here.
Bob Dylan's gravest two mistakes, getting into movies, and getting into the 1980s. something we all regret.
Not everybody. I loved Bob in the 80s! His concerts with GE Smith were incredible! Jokerman, Sweetheart Like You. Tight Connection....great stuff!
I feel Bob feels so out of place here...
The answer to all the "but, why Bob?" is simple: it was 1986. However, unlike the overwhelming majority of the absurdly silly self-serious 'culture' of the time, Bob always knew it was bullsh*t.
Why bob
Money.
Humiliation ritual.
BOB DYLAN WAS AND HE IS STILL LIQUID.
M.AZAYI
Why is Bob putting his fingers in his mouth so much?
I think they came from breakfast and he had piece of tomato skin stucked between the teeth.
Pubic hair.
!!!!@@herbbirdsfoot

Pubic hairy that turned into public hair
Bad teeth
I do like his music generally but The only concert i walked out of was Bob's. i was sitting 10 miles away in the worst seats but every song sounded the same like an old drunk man singing down a drain pipe 😅
That’s a great way to explain his voice sometimes. It is shocking how little effort he puts into live performances. Sometimes he is spine tingling but that is rare.
Sorry, but no - almost everything that Bob sings is sublime.
Great songwritet hopeless singer esecially live hes pathetic even many bob die hard fans will tell you bobs terrible live.
@@wootandhammy in your opinion
His most recent tour has been bloody brilliant, he seems to be enjoying live performing a lot more recently
Badly produce. If you don't want to kneel the bread, don't show up at the table.
✌️🤡
Awful, awful movie. I've seen this Previously Unseen Bob Dylan Press Conference.
This movie sucked, I’m surprised Dylan even did it, definitely the lowest part of his career along with the dangly earring and his look in general at this time, but the 80’s were good for that.
It was the 80’s and the style of the 80’s !!!!! My god
I seen it in a cinema in Dublin when it came out and thought it was great because Bob was in it. Theres no such thing as bad publicity
@@niallswaine2436 just such a thing as a bad movie and this movie was bad.
This is the most moronic interview I've heard since the last Bob Dylan one - whenever that was.
I think Bob Dylan behaved rudely and uncouth. Picking at his teeth. Hardly answering the questions at all. We are all struggling in life. I love Bob Dylan but this behavior is just uncalled for.
So What!
did you hear the stupidity and aggression of those question he was being asked?
You must've never seen nor heard Dylan being asked questions before.
14:23. In the words of Billy Parker.... is that you Bob?
