Вставка
- Опубліковано 12 чер 2024
- The Granby Roll is a wrestling counter that has become an excellent takedown defence technique for use in MMA. In this study, we look at its use as an escape from turtle or standing. The Granby Roll can even be used as a guard recovery technique and submission entry for Jiu-Jitsu players.
The Granby roll gets its name from Granby high school in Norfolk, Virginia where it was made popular by legendary coach Billy Martin Senior. The Granby roll is only one part of a larger Granby wrestling system that the school teaches,

Great great upload. I know this technique from bjj rolling sessions, but you gave a simple full detail form guide, and then showed it in endless positions. First video of yours ive ever seen or heard of but will be subbed now.
Thanks mate, happy to have you on board!
I always liked the forward roll to kneebar combo. It works well from standing or turtle.
Yep the kneebar roll is a nice option !
I used to think it was called the Granny roll 🤣🤣🤣
Don't worry I used to think it was Gamby :)
You're not alone.
I always thought its called Bramby rolls:)
Lots of people pronounce gable grip as cable grip and whizzer as wizard
Yup. I had close caption on on another video a few years ago when I saw it was “Granby”… I was wondering for so long why it was named after an old woman… LOL… though it took me a little longer to find out where the term “Granby” came from, but it still sounded better than “Granny Roll”
Awesome! Thanks a lot for sharing!
PD: Not enough moments of Tony ferguson 🤣
Thank you! Haha i know only the one of Tony in here and he has a couple of others I could have used. Maybe next time :)
It’s unbelievable how many techniques are out there. I’m not trying to learn them all, I’m just awed by the sheer number of possibilities.
Its endless! 🙏
3 videos in 1 month, Sonny is on fire
A 4th is on the way !
Excellent work! granby roll has saved my bacon a few times (with a roll out kimura)
Cheers Jon :)
Never knew it had a name. Thanks for excellent lesson!
Awesome! Glad to help 🙏
Gold... Thanks for posting
Cheers Emad! Appreciate it !
Bravo sonny. What a fantastic video of the application of a wrestling technique in mma. Your best yet.
Thank you Sir! I hope to keep making plenty more!
Thank you! Excellent!
Your videos are great and they have been helping me in my mma training
Glad you like them! 🙏
I was just watching a video on crocop's channel and then suddenly I thought hey Sonny Brown hasn't posted in ages. Little did I know that for some reason youtube wasn't notifying me of new videos ! Oh well I have a nice set of videos waiting for me to watch. Thanks for the informative video on the Granby roll too !
Another fine upload, Mr Brown
Thank you Mr Pudz. The collabs are coming up.
Loving your contents sonny
Thanks mate! It is really motivating to know people enjoy it.
Great stuff!
Raphael Alves pulled it off like a breakdance move in one of his fights!!
Ill check it out!
Commentary: "Brazilian jiu jitsu fighters use Granby roll as an avenue to open up various leg locking opportunities"
Video: Shows a Catch wrestler leg locking BJJ black belt.
Timestamp?
brilliant!
thank you!
Another vid! On a roll
Cheers Paragon! Yep my Goal is to stay consistent with vids!
I C WUT U DID THUR...!
I grew up wrestling for coaches who wrestled for Billy Martin Sr. at Granby high school in Norfolk, VA. The move didn't really have a name until the high school students went on to wrestle at colleges across the country. During the tournaments the announcers didn't know how or what to call the move so they simply said that the "boys from Granby are doing that roll." It became known as the Granby roll. The original movement was mostly a forward roll but it soon evolved into the arm being thrown cross body during the roll. It works best when the opponent on top applies downward and forward pressure on you (trying to break you down into the mat). If there is no pressure being applied then it makes it difficult for the move to be successful. Great video!
Wow! Excellent to hear more of the story from someone who was there. Really happy you enjoyed the video and appreciate the comment!
I love you sonny brown ❤️
Is this THE Hoin Chung ? It has to be !
I’m a HWT.
My go to get up was a Tri-Pod.
Most guys tried chopping my arm I’d just go with the flow and Granby out.
Thats one of my wrestling drills also!
Nice
Thanks Dan! Appreciate the continued support mate 🙏🙌
great vid , thanks
Thanks mate! I appreciate the comment.
2:28 The only Granby to a submissiok (Kneebar) was done by a Catch wrestler.
Awesome and I wonder what's next analysis
Thanks mate! Got a few options for the next one :)
great vid. guys good with granbys are some of the most frustrating to fight
Quality
I’m here because I’m from Norfolk and had no clue when people said Granby roll it was in reference to Granby high school in Norfolk, Virginia lol
Now that is awesome 👌
F'ing beautiful. I've got a fever. And the prescription is more granby.
These vids are always great, keep it up bruv.
You got any tips to modify wrestling for the streets? I'm in South Africa and all the Zulu guys love trips sweeps and slams.
Thanks Alexandros, I'll keep putting them out! Wrestling for the streets is tough, In fact, all of street self-defence can get into a bit of a strange area where effective techniques can intersect with moral and legal obligations that I have to give some more thought towards.
Sonny Brown you might like “facing violence” and the other books by the author (rory miller i think). As far as wrestling on concrete, i figure the moves where you slam your own knees down have got to go. Greco stuff maybe.
It's so satisfying to hit a standing Granby for some reason
Feel like a smooth criminal
Was wondering why Poirier didn't apply one of these rolls when Connor caught his foot in the second round of their epic fight yesterday. Didn't cost him the win in the end. But this Granby or other rolls would have been a viable escape solution.
Yeah something that's got to be instinct. I remember he did go for the switch against khabib.
good
Thanks 🙏
A Granary Roll is not as useful from a grappling perspective but with the right filling, makes for a healthy lunchtime snack.
El cucuy the goat of granbys
Got to love Tony !
Can you make a video on Luta Livre’s effectiveness in MMA?
Would be fun, maybe could just focus on Maro Ruas
I want more
Thanks Stefan! Any requests for what you want?
@@SonnyBrown I'm looking for the best mma scrambles. The smoothest technique. UFC or one championship
@@stefanambrister3220 Ooo thats a good Idea, make sure you sub !
Tony was so good back then.
Yep, such a savage. 🙏
Man i know you probably wont see or respond to this but where on earth did you fing that Jamill Kelly match. I'd love to give it a watch😂😂
haha ill respond, but i can't remember where i found the footage
ALL good@@SonnyBrown
Soooooooo this ain't as easy as these fellas make it look, found that out today as I got folded like a napkin trying it
I didn't know this had an actual name 😂 I use it a lot in judo, but I have to be careful with it because sometimes I get caught in the middle when I'm on my shoulders
Yep it sure does :) Yeah Im sure it would work for Judo but the problem you mention of getting pinned does exist in wrestling too which is where this move can be a bit of an exception as it does involve exposing the back.
@@SonnyBrown judo has the gi which complicates things. We get a lot of actual old HS wrestlers there and i don't use those kinds of dynamic movements against them because they've seen it s lot and they also know to clamp on my gi to stop my movement when I'm on my shoulders
Zero dislikes baby! 17MAY19 The world learns good taste
Haha yeah that is pretty rare! May not last forever so I will enjoy it while I can! :)
@@SonnyBrown impermanence is the reason life is valuable
@@ffnovice7 Love it !
Is there any advice for stoping an opponent from doing that, when you hsve their back standing
Feel there momentum when they are about to roll then follow them as they roll forward you would be on top of them or in a dominant position.
Following them as they roll or taking them backwards
U should have a lot more subscribes .... nice Video like the way
U explain... much better then the Germans do 👍🏽 keep going bro .... can a some how Support your Chanel very big ? Maybe I make Chanel and put u inside. Take some time but will be ready soon
Did Cody use it against Rob font?
May have, ill have to check it out. 🙏
Talks about Jiu-jitsu players, shows a Catch wrestler.
Haha i can't help it !
I can never pull this off against wrestlers. We get a lot of wrestlers at my judo gym and I always know not to use this on them because they will just latch onto my gi and pin me in the middle of it. I feel like it would work much better without the gi
After watching this video I can see one way to neutralise khabibs wrestling pins is to granby roll
Why don't they do this in movie fight choreography, even in the best of HK films?
Because it requires a real fighter to pull off wrestling maneuvers including the amazing Granby rolls while any fool can punch, kick, do acrobats and do those virtually useless standing locks that you see in movies!
A typical or even world class martial artist who isn't a fighter won't be able to display this in a movie choreography because non of them could really wrestle which is the foundation to becoming a real fighter and thus, the foundation to pull off those amazing, beautiful Granby Rolls!
I guess reality is really stranger (more beautiful) than fiction!
It actually would be a pretty cool one to see done in a movie!
@@SonnyBrown when single and double leg takedowns are incorporated in a movie fight scene, then perfectly yes!
That's what Alexander Gustafsson should've done against Jon Jones the very moment the latter knee-tapped the former!
Sounds like Craig Jones lol

I will order one with cheese for lunch.
