Planting Like Our Ancestors

  • In an effort to remain as natural as possible and not till up the land, we are hand casting our winter wheat over our established warm season pasture. We are trying to save money on hay this winter as we feed our cows. Rotational grazing is the key to success when raising cows on grass. This is our first time casting over established grasses. We are trying to work with nature instead of against it on our little homestead.

That’s a great idea! We’re planning to use some Crimson Clover as a cover crop in a few spots and let the chickens run on a few other spots this late fall & winter. We have plenty of chicken and pig manure to spread come spring.

Very clever. I will watch with interest! Anything to reduce the hay bill is worth it

Out here on the prairie, if you want to dual purpose your winter wheat, you need to get it in the ground a month early. I wasn't planning on grazing it (the ducks don't really eat it, except when it first emerges) So we sowed at garlic planting time: 180 square foot of winter white, woohoo! Think we're going to need a scythe?
Note for people who are not Brian: Red wheat is good for upland sites where the soil stays relatively dry. If the plants are going to have wet feet for any length of time (bottom land), sow white wheat instead.

Interesting idea looking forward to see how it works. We need to start to get out fields ready for pasture land. Wishing y'all a blessed day.

Sounds great! Here I'm wrapping up the garden, and Church Member has said he'll give me a fall tilling. So if we can get that done soon, I'll be hand broadcasting some plain old white clover that hopefully can provide some cover. Hmmm.... I have a tiny bit of seed from the tendergreen mustard I grew and saved. I wonder if that has enough time to come in? Oh, Mr. Google....!

Very cool! I don't know anything at all about this... but find it very interesting, for many reasons... not the least of which is that my grandparents and generations before them did know such things.
    Love all your FF content!
    Thanks again for it! 👍😊❤️🙏

Question - In your video, you talked oats and wheat. Which are you planting, oats or wheat, they are totally different grains. Even if you're not going to let them mature into grain, they are still different. Thanks for the clarification. One other thought it would be ok to plant both in one pasture because they each have their own nutritional values and would be fine for your cattle.

Haha, I thought I caught them all. We planted a mix last year and I always mix them up, (like calling the wrong kid)
Beardless Wheat is what we planted.
They didn't have any good oats this year at our seed store

I've been wondering if its better to mow first then scatter, or scatter first then mow? The idea being the stuff you mow will maybe cover the seeds a bit, as long as it doesnt chop them all up.

Yeah I'll try that next year, I've heard it both ways and wonder myself.

Thank you! Do you think that's true for West Virginia?? (Winter seeding, I have a field mix for my chickens) We are zone 6 supposedly, but we were forecasted for a freeze tonight, 2am to 9 am, so I spent the day winterizing my new apple trees and elderberry.
I start my day praising God as I feed my chickens, but for sure, repairs and unexpected events do slow the day! You guys have such a great attitude, thank you for sharing.

Fun video. In the past I have used a hand fertilizer spreader to cast seed or even a push fertilizer spreader. Just open the shoot wide enough for the seed to pass though. It impressed my wife atleast when I finished so soon lol.

Mrs. Flannel Farms and you are on it! So, you both not only hand casted your winter wheat but also oats? That is so COOL as well as hard work, but nothing Mrs. FF and you can handle so easily. On the wheat, what kind is it, Bryan? The reason I ask is being subbed to Bobby Parrish's channel 'FlavCity' here on YT, he made a cool short, on why Italian pasta is gluten free(or healthier), because its made with durum wheat and not with milled flour, that's why your video got me to thinking, if this is durum wheat, than you are totally being the great Dad that you are and procuring good, healthy natural food for your young'uns and Mrs. FF!😁👍

Seed in the boot! Is Lucy working? Nice, planting cover crop over your pasture! Hand spreading winter wheat or oat?! Overseed because you are hand sowing. I hope your plan to save some money by growing winter seeds in your pasture! I like that you don't have to plow to do this. I have a corn field near me that they planted into grass and didn't plow. It seems to be just as prolific in that field as all the others.

If you have an NRCS near you they may have a grain drill you can rent. Without good seed to soil contact it is hard to get it to grow. If you have a disc you can open them up to make slits then broadcast your seed. A golf cart makes a cheap cultipacker. Good luck!

It shouldn't since we aren't letting it go to seed, the cows are grazing it. Great question!
