What grew on the winter wheat plot before the wheat &/or did you fertilize the winter wheat?

I guess I was lazy to cut it all by hand :)

Have You considered using a scythe with a collecting attachment for reaping your harvest? It is not only much faster than scissors or sicke, but also aids with creating sheaths, because it lays down each stem in an orderly fashion.
