Artillery's main purpose is not casualties, but to force the enemy to hunker down. They cant move, and the effect on morale is devastating. Many WW2 vets have said that artillery was the worst thing about war. Deafening explosions, dirt, wood and shrapnel flying everywhere, trees exploding and all you could do is huddle in your little pothole and hope for the best. And the bombardments last for a long time too. Hours and into days at a time.

I know this is late, but if you watch the end, you can see that when he mouses over the wagons, most of them have 70-80 shells left. That means they fired only about a quarter of their load.

You are both right. Big Bertha was the artillery from the ARM side in Total Annihilation and an artillery weapon in WW1. But the weapon was never officially called that way. It was just a nickname from british people for that Weapon, also referring to the fat daughter in the Krupp familiy who made that Gun. But that weapon was never a railroad cannon, unlike Schwerer Gustav. That's a huge Gun.
Though, never as devastating as the revolver like monster cannon, the Father to Big Bertha, forgot it's name. That thing, when it started to shoot, would need atleast 20+ Nuclear reactors just to allow it to shoot without much drag... Or it would be slow or empty ALL energy reserves nearly instantly... EDIT: "Vulcan" The cannon i was talking about was the "Vulcan" takes up 30 nuclear reactors to keep it going steady, for just ONE Vulcan cannon. But it's super darn devastating too...

Well u got think before we arrived they were all tiny it's our pollution that triggered the rapid growth response until all pollution is destroyed. Then there little again.
Somewhere i saw a calculation that if biters reproduced as quickly in the game as in real life- their planet would be a fireball after a few months from the friction necessary just to pump blood through their veins.
I thought "oh that was cool way of making a train track" and then when i saw it was all artillery wagons, I actually yelled "OH NO" out loud. I actually felt bad for the bugs

Not too long if the ammo is already manufactured. My current production lines will make just over 500 artillery shells per minute. The train has a capacity of 12,800 ammo.
Michael Lundgren wow, even with all that ammo production it still takes ~25 minutes to produce enough ammo to fill it. Not too bad considering its size but still... That's epic!

Absolutely awesome, but what happened to the train. A large section of it was destroyed, it happened just after 2m into the video, just as you started manually targeting the perimeter. It doesn't look like the biters and I can't figure out what happened, there wasn't even a message that they were destroyed.
Yeah, that seems like a possibility, but it doesn't seem to make sense either. I've been looking at the segment over and over, and I can't think of anything you did to cause it. Seems more like a bug, that caused a mistargetting, or the shells exploded on being fired maybe? I doubt the devs considered that much artillery being fired at once. Something may have glitched out.
I've had mis-fires like this as well! And on a much smaller scale (4 artillery wagons). It happened after I did the "binding the map drag key to another button" trick and was firing all over the place, too.

Noiiiiiiiiiice! I had a blueprint that would let me build forward with bots bit by bit and several walls thick with laser turrets. Would use that to push into alien territory. But hey that was years ago, waaaaay cooler toys now! Awesome man I love it
I suggest you use 2 trains: One *Attack train* with all the guns that will be stationary & shooting stuff, and then another *Supply train* that goes back to base and gets more ammo for the attack train when needed.

It's simple. Draw a spiral, then in the middle turn it around and draw another spiral going back out through the gap the first spiral made.

Absolutely awesome, but what happened to the train. A large section of it was destroyed, it happened just after 2m into the video, just as you started manually targeting the perimeter. It doesn't look like the biters and I can't figure out what happened, there wasn't even a message that they were destroyed.
I believe that was a misfire from the targeting remote.
Yeah, that seems like a possibility, but it doesn't seem to make sense either. I've been looking at the segment over and over, and I can't think of anything you did to cause it. Seems more like a bug, that caused a mistargetting, or the shells exploded on being fired maybe? I doubt the devs considered that much artillery being fired at once. Something may have glitched out.
I've had mis-fires like this as well! And on a much smaller scale (4 artillery wagons). It happened after I did the "binding the map drag key to another button" trick and was firing all over the place, too.

Not played the game, but seen others play and I had absolutely no idea those railway artillery guns would have what appears to ve infinite range! Very impressive.

Noiiiiiiiiiice! I had a blueprint that would let me build forward with bots bit by bit and several walls thick with laser turrets. Would use that to push into alien territory. But hey that was years ago, waaaaay cooler toys now! Awesome man I love it

I would be overjoyed if I developed a game and one of my players came up with this
I suggest you use 2 trains: One *Attack train* with all the guns that will be stationary & shooting stuff, and then another *Supply train* that goes back to base and gets more ammo for the attack train when needed.
You can't fit nearly as many shells on a cargo wagon as you can on an artillery wagon, so just moving the artillery train is better.
You seriously need to make a blueprint for this bad boy and post the blueprint string in the description of your video. That is a work of freaking ART dude.

Non-modded, it's the vanilla game. Version 16.0. There's uranium, nuclear reactors, centrifuges, and nukes now as well.
Ryan Annis the nuclear stuff was 0.15. The artillery and new terrain is 0.16
