Unpacking My Giant Chemo Gift Box

- I filmed this video like three weeks ago but I didn't have the time to edit it until now! Thank you so much to everyone who put stuff in this box! And if you would like to send me more stuff, that's OK! I'm good on stuff right now!!!
You know you're an awesome dude when people at NASA are sending fanmail to YOU. That was so nice of them to think of your whole family.
+
And as a pin person I am DEEPLY jealous lol
+++
@@t_ylr for REAL those mission pins are so pretty
Often times people forget that the whole family is affected when there are medical issues. It is so nice to see things sent to his family. Support people need appreciation and support too :)
Seeing Hank looking like a kid on Christmas makes my day so much better
Fr
So sweet!!!
I like to think that, if I had had a son, he’d be like Hank. Probably not though.
Me,Too!
This might be the most apt usage of the phrase "like a kid on Christmas" I've ever read.
Funny to hear Hank call the JPL mission pins "merch!" They are issued internally to celebrate mission milestones. There are a few types of pins for sale in the JPL store (Artemis, JPL, NASA, Mars2020), but most pins/patches are for JPLers only. Glad you liked them!
Such a generous gift!
OMG that's amazing. Hail Nerdfighters
+.
I didn't know this! That's so cool he got them then!
Wondering how much NASA could do with the pin budget the American people are paying for? Tax paid flair 🤦♂️ And before anyone says anything, that money could be going to cancer research instead of the expensive equivalent of a gold star sticker for someone doing their job. Just being rational. Little things add up. Good luck Hank!!!! Nothing but positive vibes and well wishes to you and yours through this💜✊️🤙
A nice box, opened by a nice man, sat upon a nice floor.
For real, big respect for how well you've tackled the terrible blight that is cancer. Keep at it, Hank. We're all wanting to see you thrive. c:
Interesting pfp
@@Chris_winthersI wish I had not looked at it
8:00 ducks!
+, lovely put.
@@-Teague-same but I am glad I looked at yours
If anyone who sent something to Hank is reading through these comments, I hope you know that your kindness was something that made my day. What a thoughtful bunch of people you are.
Hank, I hope you and your family enjoy all the lovely things.
Yeah, this video brought me so much joy. I'm going to need to go grab the tissues 😭
Right?!
I liked it too, but I've got an itty-bitty burst bubble here only because I've been looking for an address, even asked on the last video where to send this little thing I made for Hank, and the very next video is asking us NOT to send more stuff. Nevertheless, this was downright heartwarming to see!!
+
@@SarappreciatesHe said “do not feel like you need to send me stuff” not that you couldn’t. :) Im sure he’d love the thing you made for him.
"I'm just surrounded by wonderfulness" -- Yes you are -- and you have surrounded us with wonderfulness
+
so true :')
Perfectly said!

This comment needs to be up higher.
To whoever sent the hats and scarf. Their faces must have been exploding with joy watching Hank wear them for the entire video.
And Hank knows exactly how to receive handmade clothing! Touch it, say "wow", and immediately put it on. If he has yarn people in his life, they've trained him well. 🧶💞
Those tentacles are a bugger to crochet!
Did anyone notice the crocheted pelican was wearing the same scarf??
They didn’t make me jealous enough to ever want cancer, but damn, fk cancer in binary around the neck, an octopus cuddling your noggin with its tentacles looking like PHENOMENAL dreads… envyyyyy. It is a TOTAL SKA hat, too, with the big pouch in the back… our ska punk Hank has been wholly revived just as the cancer has been thoroughly fkd as the scarf crafter willed it to fk off and die already. Freaking gorgeous masterful crafting!
Glad you liked the puzzle I sent, I figured 500 pieces was the right size.
Wow it's so lovely that you sent that to Hank. It's kind and thoughtful of you to send something, and honestly even though the gift wasn't for me, I appreciate it.
Hank, John, and this community have meant a lot to me since I first started watching vlogbrothers in 2009, and I'm just so grateful that this community (and the world) have compassionate people who show their care so freely ❤
All puzzles are the right size.
How kind of you!
You're awesome!
You and your colleagues are fabulous! The sheer thoughtfulness that went into that gift box shows what a kind bunch you are. Much love and respect from the UK 🇬🇧💕
"im gonna be here for 4 hours"
People would love to see Hank making a 4 hour video
You clearly have not seen the games with Hank Button Ending video from the time he played The Stanley Parable
How tf do I see you in every comment section
Pretty sure they are a bot
Just not Hank Shrader, right?
Or just any project for awesome livestream... the nerdfighters are always there for hank green content
Hank being flabbergasted that he has touched the lives of so many people is now one of my favourite things.
There's a bunch of us who couldn't send stuff but put money on to a big pot which was split between charities.
Glad you like it!
❤ That's incredibly kind of y'all! What a beautiful way to show your support for this amazing human! 🥲
Lots of people at JPL survived school with your help Hank! You're always welcome here!
The rest of us are blessed to have you there!
Y'all are great!
We gotta get a Hank @ JPL tour once he's feeling up to travel again!
I cannot get over the immense amount of love expressed through this box. The binder alone must have taken so much time and effort and dedication. Hank you have made such an amazing impact on so so so many people. We love you and yours so much.
my science teacher loves you, and is constantly showing your videos in class.
she completly gave up on the unit she was teaching when you got cancer, and started teaching us all about how cancer works instead lol
Honestly, a cancer unit would probably be a very valuable thing to have in science class! Understanding of cancer and cancer treatment seems generally very poor among most people I know (including myself), which is a big problem considering basically everybody will know someone with cancer at some point in their life, and many people will actually get cancer at some point in their lives. If you live in a place where your teacher is allowed to set her own curriculum, you should suggest to her that she incorporate a cancer unit in the future as well.
Teacher gives up on today's lesson plan for current events or spontaneous discussion type classes are the ones I look back on with the most fondness
I would think it would be really amazing to have that as a unit!
@@RenayOpish yeah its actually really intresting, doesnt really have much to do with physics (its a physics class) but still intresting
@@amykathleen2 it would be! however it is a physics class so...
Hi Hank!! As someone who collects lots and lots of pins, I have a DIY suggestion for displaying them in your office- you can get a 10” embroidery wheel and a T-shirt and tighten the fabric. Then you can cut off the excess shirt, and BOOM- you can really easily add your collection of pins and just hang it up through the little hole embroidery screw. I have three separate embroidery hoops (two 10” and one 4” hoop) covered with 52 pins in my room and it’s one of my favorite decorations!
That's a fantastic idea!
+
Fantastic idea, and a great upcycle use for an old t-shirt that doesn't fit anymore. Might do this myself with some of my pins, I currently have them all on a jean jacket but I just don't wear that jacket much.
oh i should do this for my own collection. this is great advice, thank you for sharing!
@@northstarjakobs Thanks, I’m glad you like the idea!! Its a fun craft imo- you get to tell a story with the pins and can make patterns or designs with the pins too- whatever you like! I got tired of losing or having to re-pin my pins to bags and jackets, so I decided to hang them up!
It’s so cute that people sent things for Orin and Katherine too 😭
Love the octopus hat! The world would be a better place if we all wore such interesting things on our heads. 💚
i hope he likes all the “stuff on heads” pix we sent 😆
The socks were a great idea. Many people get very cold but especially their feet, while getting chemo (hence why many chemo blankets are made and why some have foot pockets). Also, summer or not, those places are usually freezing.
It's amazing. I'm in love
Agree 100%
Maaannnn, I want the people at JPL to think I'm cool. I didn't know that was an ambition of mine, but seeing Hank achieve it made me realize.
Dude same
When I was 6, my ambition was to work at NASA, so this seems like a slightly more attainable version of that aspiration.
@@vigilantcosmicpenguin8721 when I was in 1st grade, I wanted to be an astronaut so bad, I had like a dozen books about space.
I started crying at how amazing the fighters at JPL/NASA are. The community outpouring makes me proud to be one of you weird, wonderful people.
Someone knit him a scarf that says "F--k Cancer" in binary code! (actually, maybe crochet?). People sat there for hours making him presents. It's so very sweet. Home made presents are the best. Those patches and pins are for people involved in missions; they aren't sold. There's a finite amount as far as I know and they gave them to Hank. Lovely.
This video has the energy of a very large and loving families “extended family” Christmas morning and the kids who are genuinely very excited and grateful for everything they get.
It makes my little broken home heart sing.
Hank noticing that the star blanket has constellations but did he notice they were DINOSAUR CONSTELLATIONS!!
Man what an amazing gift box, good work Nerdfighters!
Yay we're all so glad it got to you safely! Katie put SO much work into it and it's nice to see everything that was included. We love you, Hank! We're all sending positive vibes for a speedy recovery ❤
You are awesome!
I love how all these people are expressing how much they care about you.
The instinct to crochet or knit you something by hand was especially touching to see. 🥰
Whoever made that scarf, it’s BEAUTIFUL and so clever with its hidden message. What a generous gift.
i just want to say, thank you hank for being so honest about your journey. you are very strong and we love you so much! ❤
"I don't know what I'm gonna do with the patches" - Hank while wearing a denim shirt
I'm glad that a group of nerfighters got together and made you a gift box. Obviously, it would be too much if everyone made you a gift, but there are nerdfighter groups that have been around since the beginning and it's nice to have that "small world" feeling.
+++
and truly, a huge thank you to all of the members of nerdfighteria who sent media recommendations, well wishes, who organized to do healthcare related charity donations--we are so lucky to have such an amazing, compassionate, dedicated community.
Well said! 💜 dftba
"It's summertime, so I don't know if people would think, 'Why is that guy wearing a knit hat right now?'" But nobody would question you wearing a knit octopus. 😂
Did the knitters coordinate their yarns? The octopus and scarf match perfectly, and I love it. 💚
I'm not sure if in summer more people would wonder "Hey, why is that guy wearing a knit cap right now?" or "Hey, why is that guy wearing an octopus on his head right now?"
Hank, if all of your subscribers sent all of their love, hugs and thoughts for your journey to a full recovery, there wouldn't be a box, in the universe, large enough to hold it all!
😭 true!

This is like watching Hank as a kid, at Christmas. It's great. Merry Christmas, Hank!!! 🎄 🎅 🌲
I was just thinking the same thing! 😆✨🥰
Merry Cancer-mas
Hank getting the same scarf as the tiny one the pelican has was too cute 😢❤ they're matching 😂
SO happy you like the knit hats and the lotion barr & lip balm. I made all of them.
You picked great colors that compliment Hank's tone!
Have you got a shop?
Watching you open those gifts with childlike amazement was awesome 👏 That octopus hat was the shit! You rock it well 👍🏼
Those chewy ginger candies got me through early pregnancy with twins. Hoping they work for you too!
Gin-Gins!
Ginger candies and ginger snaps! A gal with GI disease wouldn't be without them.
Love the love in this video. Just a suggestion for the patches Hank, my family collected travel patches for me from birth to eighteen and surprised me by making me a blanket with all the patches I still collect and add patches to the blanket. I think it would be cool to take the mission patches and put them on a blanket for Orin. ❤
As an employee of a merch company this was so cool to see the joy someone can have receiving quality swag!
I realize this was meant to make Hank smile, but I have been grinning like an idiot the whole time and have tears in my eyes. Thank you NASA Nerdfightaria.
You taking the time to thank everyone who sent you stuff is just... so freaking sweet! Nobody would have faulted you to have opened this gift in private. But then you shared it with all of us, AND took the time and energy to name everyone. Just another confirmation of how awesome you are.
I'm only to the octopus hat and he is so damn adorable. ❤ Well done everyone who sent him this lovely gift box. You are all ❤
I am already a huge fan of JPL, but now? Now! NOW! I did not think I could love them and you any more than I already do. Watching this has made me so happy. I'm crying. Yay! Thanks for sharing your personal awesome for all of us for so long, but especially now through your cancer journey. 🤗🥰
For those curious, the word Hank was struggling with at the end was "amigurumi" and it's crochet stuffed animals/dolls/sculptures.
Four words for the amazing patches = Acid Washed Jeans Jacket
I'm the Allie who made your Anglerfish!! I'm so happy you like him and his goofy teeth😊
He is EXCELLENT!

Hank takes off his Kraken hat to put on an ACTUAL KRAKEN HAT! Well done to the group who sent this to him. So much awesome in a box. Nerdfighteria is pulling for you, Hank!
I hate that you are having to go through this. Happy and proud to see you still posting. Myself and my step son love your channel
Legit... watching you smile this much while opening your gift box was sooo heart warming! I'm soo happy for you little piece of happiness!
"Surrounded by so much wonderfulness" indeed. What a great community you have brought together. Thanks for sharing their generosity with us.
Hank, I am begging you to wear the octopus hat skiing (or similar winter sporting) this winter. I want to see the tentacles majestically flap in the breeze
Nerdfighteria is so full of talented, amazing nerdfighters. It's lovely to see some of their work here!
And yeah, Hank, amigurumi is the japanese term for a crochet or knit friend. Amigurumi work is beautiful and can be really delicate--the artists who did those did a great job!
This is so fun. And at this point, how many people who had Crash Course as a part of their academic journey are now at JPL and tons of other cool places?
This made me smile so big. I hope you enjoy all your pressies! And beat that cancer!
The scarf made by Tony is AMAZING!! I hope you feel all the love these gifts represent :)
Hey Hank, thanks for sharing with us. You've shared a lot with us over the years, and now Nerdfighteria is sharing its love for you. I hope it's helping and not making you feel like you owe us your time. Take care, dude
Another demonstration of how, when you put goodness out there, goodness comes back.
omj i’m gonna cry! i’m so glad you’re enjoying our gifts to you!
Thank you for your gifts to Hank!. Your love and care is evident and so heartwarming to everyone who watched him unbox it.❤
You're awesome
Crap happens to the best of us man, I cannot relate to what you are going through, but get well so man.
Everything else aside, I'm so glad that you opened the octopus hat at the start of the video. It brings out the child in you. Very nice work.
I'm wowed by the contributions from the yarn & needle Nerdcrafters--y'all worked astoundingly quickly, with no compromise on quality! Special recognition to the binary scarf--secret message items are so special. Kitty who sent the hats--if you see this, let us know what yarn they're made of, a knitter wants to know 😉
Hank, thank you for sharing the love with this community, may you be delighted & comforted by these gifts for years to come!
This is so pure and sweet. To everyone who participated in this - this was a gift to us all! Thank you. Oh but imagine being Oran and just being like ‘oh yeah nerdfighteria sent me some cool things. What do you mean everyone’s dad doesn’t have an internet following of THE best people on the planet? Huh?’
You deserve it, and so much more for all your hard work and dedication to enriching strangers' lives. Thank you and great health to you!
10/10 oversized octopus hat
I’ve spent the last two weeks doing nothing in my spare time but scrolling your videos. Glad I found this page, and you. Better late than never! Best wishes with your treatment!!!
So much love to Hank. This man deserves all the hugs!❤️🧡💛💚💙💜 Also, I think he should name his pelican Hank Jr...😄
Now, because of you, I'm going to be having my lymph nodes checked along with my blood work twice a year. I haven't been on my immunosuppressant for as long as you, but I'm on a relatively strong dose. I have ankylosing spondylitis, and my immune system really, really wants to eat my sacroiliac joint and hips. I hate that you're going through this. You and Grace both.
I'm in the Facebook group that put this box together
I unfortunately couldn't contribute myself but it's great to see it arrived safely
One of my favorite videos ever made ❤
All of this is cool but part me wish the thought went out to cancer patients without nearly as much money or support system.
LPT for sticker collections. Buy a blank plastic canvas style banner to put them on. It can be hung anywhere (even on the ceiling) and rolled up and stored for safe keeping.
I love that whoever put this together provided a packing list.
I'm just sticking them to the back of my door 😱
This is one of the most nerdy and wholesome videos I've ever seen! Enjoy your fab goodies Hank. You deserve it!
This is so kind! I’ve been trying to think of something I could do to show support, and since you’re clearly all stuffed up now, I think I’ll make a donation to PIH! Hope you’re doing well!
that hat is so awesome! you should wear it every video now
Hank that plant behind you..... I've bought four of those plants throughout time and I have failed to keep them all alive, despite the fact thatbi am very good at keeping plants alive. You have either been blessed by the plant world or you have magical plant powers
when he said he adopted a pelican i thought he said pellet gun... "I've officially adopted a pellet gun. Just a pellet gun. It doesn't have a name or anything."
Hank's talent for naming pets will be severely tested with this one
If you buy a large canvas (or make one with a basic wooden frame and fabric of your choice), you can pin the pins and patches to it.
(If you don't want to pierce the stickers for hanging, you can put some tape or hole punch reinforcers on the stickers' backings, hanging off the edge enough to hang from a pin)
I am so jealous of your space goodies! And your pelican! And your awesome hat! Enjoy your swag, my man. 😊
Fighting cancer takes Perseverance and your pin will serve as daily reminder to persevere! Take it from one who knows (I finished cancer treatments on January 20th, now I am working on getting my strength back). Always persevere, stay strong and from a fellow cancer patient…Hang in there and stay positive, even on those lousy days that you feel like absolute crap. I’m pulling for you, Hank!
And you’re lucky that so many people are pulling for you: I had to pretty much fight my battle mostly alone. It was brutal, and I had to do it during the holidays on top of everything. But…I got through it, I’m getting stronger every day and I am told that by this time next year, I should be fully recovered from it all. Hope you’re getting close to finishing chemo treatments and then comes the fun part: recovery and survivorship. You’ll do great given how many people are pulling for you!
Hank saying "Fuck cancer" with such joy had me losing it.
The octopus "watching" the unboxing is utterly adorable. Gonna need to hit up my crafy friend....must have an octopus on my head. 🐙
I hope you can feel all this internet love aimed at you. It's like one giant "Care Bear Stare."
I hadn't expected to see so many pelicans here-I'm not upset in the least 😂❤
It's so good to see you see well, Hank ❤
Not even to the mid-point of the video and I'm sitting here grinning like a mule eating briars! I am so happy to see you all lit up; it warms my heart so much❣️
Part 2:
With all the goings-on in our nation and the world, it's easy to get into a funk about our fellow humans, but when I'm getting a little down, the Brothers Green and their followers are always an affirmation that there are some really awesome people on this planet.
I don't entirely know why, but this made me cry happy tears. I'm so glad you're doing better.
Adult Nerdfighters is the best thing about Facebook. I wasn’t able to participate in this but I’m so proud of the folks who did.
The orange highlighter on the ground in the background is the most relatable thing ever.
My heart is so happy knowing how much love you are being shown! ❤️
I am SO SO grateful that you and John started Vlogbrothers so many years ago. I'm sure that you never would have imagined at the time that it would go on to foster such a loving and supportive corner of the internet (much of which is decidedly not loving and supportive) and that that corner would extend out into the world into irl community and concrete action. This video and all of the kindness in it (and in the comments) made me think of that trajectory, and the power of creative and kind sharing.
Wow, amazing news this morning about J&J! And reinforces what I said about the amazing community or Nerdfightaria.
Damn it Kyle this one moved me to tears. Your nuclear series is so powerful. Thank you for showing reverence in education
Hank you gotta put all the patches and pins on a jean vest, like a space battle vest!
Those aren't just constellations, they are DINOSAUR CONSTELLATIONS!!! 😯😯
Also, i need to make myself one of those octo-hats now lol! That thing is dope af!
The binary f**k cancer scarf matches the scarf on the knitted stuffed pelican !
Omg I love Lois McMaster Bujold and you’re going to love Young Miles! (It’s actually two novels and a short story that are the start of the Vorkosigan Saga. Excellent space opera sci-fi). (I also highly recommend her fantasy books including the Curse of Chalion).
NASA is my new favourite government funded agency

The way the octopus hat flops around is killing me! I love it so much!
What an amazing box of goodies. I think that anyone who has ever gone through cancer treatment appreciated this. Let’s all remember our friends going through a difficult time and send them a little something, even if it is just a card. Sending you love Hank and hope you feel better soon!
I think the book might be the collage.
Love the squid hat! So cool
hank: what am i gonna do with all of those (nasa mission patches)
he says, actively wearing a bare denim shirt thats just asking to be decked tf out
Even sick, you are a terrific entertainer. Lotsa love Hank.
the amount of work all of those crochet things took - wow - i have made that octopus hat (the pattern is on etsy) and it took me two weeks! all of those things together took some serious time!
The "Young Miles" compilation from the Vorkosigan Saga really caught me by surprise, it's my personal favorite book series. I hope you enjoy it!
The hat is amazing, it's giving rasta vibes
