i'm disappointed that 'longer version' meant 'a 9 minute nicely polished video' and not 'the raw footage of this project in its entirely for 30-60 minutes'
I didn't know what it meant to be a John or a Hank, but Hank spending all this time and energy figuring out something John not only already knew, but had also already told him, proves that I'm a Hank
I love everything about this. I should be working, but I’m eagerly watching a grown man compare pens. I might suggest donating all of the unused pens to your closest school. Teachers go through a lot of pens!!
Not so much with sharpies. Teachers generally want to avoid sharpies so students can't use them to wreck stuff. (Source; a lot of teacher-relatives.) Goodwill or another donation center maybe?
Infernoraptor You are definitely right about the kids stealing sharpies to take to the bathroom. I teach little kids who don’t tend to steal as much. My coworkers go through a lot of colors and markers to color code, label, and crafting. Elementary teachers do a lot of crafts.
You can buy all these markers and use forensic ink analysis to determine which was use for your signature. Warning: You might have to destory the signature to get the results but it’s for SCIENCE so you’re good with that, right?
A lot of vlogbrothers videos feel like the "good morning john/hank" is just an arbitrary intro and the video is for the nerdfighters, but this video feels 100% like hank is making this specifically for john and we are just eavesdropping
as a person who is allergic to sharpie smell, i’d like to know the best that wouldn’t make me have a sneezing attack that lasted 4 hours. i’m assuming the Ticonderoga. Thank you.
The Sharpie ultra fine is my go-to pen for note-taking and other pen tasks. I'm not signing thousands of pages obviously. The ultra fine lasts a very long time and puts down smooth lines. The only time I regretted the Sharpie was when I used it in my moleskin notebook and it bled through the paper like crazy. So the other favorite I have is the Pilot G2 0.7mm gel roller.
Oh my gosh, almost every comment has something that he should have taken into consideration and now all I can think about is how this data set is so incomplete.
I sell office/art supplies for a living so this was tremendously interesting, also no surprise on the sharpie as the winner. And I'm sure your right about those 3 markers being the same with different branding
Another thing to keep in mind as far as smoothness on the signing goes is the actual tooth of the paper that you’re working with. A lot of papers out there will just eat your marker tips for breakfast (especially felt tips like permanent, sharpie-adjacent markers) and will drastically cut down on the longevity of the marker. Not saying this to Hank specifically because I’m pretty sure by looking at my copy of An Absolutely Remarkable Thing that the paper he’s signing on is relatively smooth, but for other market buyers in the future, this is something to keep in mind. Sincerely, a pen addict and lettering artist
This is hands down the Hankest of all ways to tackle the “so I have to sign how many pieces of paper in a short amount of time?” problem. As always, big fan and thoroughly enjoyed it.
I am so satisfied by this. Hank, I have been waiting AGES for you to do this video since you mentioned it on Dear Hank and John forever ago, and I was not disappointed.
I was curious about the pocket shark, and it turns out it's made by (or for) Cold Steel, a company that makes basically any sort of sharpened steel implements (knives, swords, axes, machetes and spears). This makes the pen even more of a curiosity: why does it exist? Did someone accidentally cut a pen with an axe, got splattered with ink, and decided that this was a problem that needed to be fixed?
Daan Wilmer it was created with two purposes: writing and “persuading”. There is a whole Every Day Carry industry around pens that can be used as fighting tools. It would be used with a knowledge of pressure points to stop someone from holding you or persuading them to move in the direction you want them to.
Only Hank can make me google for permanent marker. I have never experienced sharpies, I don't think we have them commonly available in the Netherlands. Probably if I go to a proper stationary store I could get them, but the main " office grade" brand used here is Edding. I have tons of Edding markers! Just as Americans say "sharpie" to all permanent markers, we say "edding". Or the not so short "watervaste viltstift" in Dutch
This is the kind of passion I signed up for I have also sent it to my partner with the caption "RE: that time we had an argument in paperchase" (although that was regarding brightly coloured pens for scribbling (adult perk) and not markers but it's the same energy)
I enjoyed this video thoroughly. Finding a pen that writes well is something I've spent a great deal of time on in the past and, like you, I've always returned to Sharpie for the most enjoyable writing experience.
You cannot dim the glow of my love for the metallics. Not the best choice for ordinary paper, sure, but the versatility! Think of the versatility! Metallics colors show up on white and on black and on nearly every other color out there!! I will sing their praises from every soapbox I can find.
In case it matters (an not for this experiment): Sharpies ink leaches through plastic wrap. Something in the chemicals goes through (not the colour). So if you're going to use it on something containing food (just in case we ever go back to work and you have to mark your name on your lunch in a communal fridge) be aware that the smell/taste of the Sharpie will be on your food. Or you could just not use plastic wrap.
Ahhh yes. I’ve reached my peak depression. Watching a comprehensive video about pens. However, I am very into this and can’t stress enough how fun hank is to watch
At the wastewater laboratory where I work we use the Staedtler permanent lumocolor M, because it's the only one we've found to make marks that were still permanent-ish after being baked for an hour at above 1000 F. So, if that's something you are planning to do, the sharpies just won't hold up.
omg... I need some grafs. Nut just the number of paper signed. I need weights before and after, diameter at the grip location, with of first and last line. And probably much more that you had time to think of while signing. Also.... We need you to repeat all pins at least 15 times. Maybe you use more ink. when you are angry and push harder, maybe you say to yourself what when the ink runs out you be done signing for today, there for you use more ink. Maybe when you are happy you add more anglerfish and therefor use more ink. Maybe the humidity makes the paper more or less dry and there sucks more ink from the pen. Maybe the pin with a nice grips makes you make more anglerfish.... And yes we also need data for the colors.... I think this is a good prestudy that shows that different pens might have different endurance. But now it is time the the real study.
I love writing by hand and have... maybe a pen... problem. Nah, I love them and they make me happy and this video was so satisfying and delight making!
I think he said in a previous video that he draws hanklerfish on signatures that he just feels do not look that great, and assuming a constant effectiveness of Hank signatures there would be about the same hanklerfish to signature ratio per pen, so it shouldn't actually impact the results
@@newcreation19 I don't know about that. There has to be a quality difference between the pens. So one pen may just produce terrible signatures so he adds more Hanklerfish which in turns decreases the life of the pen screwing with the above results. Probably not, but it is something to take into consideration.
STTNGfan15 I understood him to mean he adds them on signatures that he affected the quality of with his hand motion, and not that the marker affected the quality of the signature. If he stopped using each pen when he felt the effectiveness had worn off I don’t expect that there’d be a huge quality variation from the pen, but who knows.
Katherine Nally I also thought he meant “bad hand motion” when he said “bad signature”. I just think that a pen that is really uncomfortable to hold (like the shark one) would affect his hand motions and produce terrible signatures that he needs to add hanklerfish to
My brother used to have a saying several decades back; "Play an accordion, go to jail". My way of saying I noticed the picture on the wall behind you Hank. 🤣

Because it was not public at that point, or I should say, it was only available through a link, such as the one from the description of the 4 minute version on the Vlogbrothers channel. I guess he just listed it fully publicly now.
Is anyone else going to comment on the fact that he didn't mention that the COLD STEEL Pocket Shark is actually designed as a self defense weapon? I feel like that's an important qualifier.
I didn't realize you could only access this video through the link on the vlogbrothers video. I've been waiting forever for no reason! It's been here the whole time!
This is so something I would do. I've counted M8Ms to see which color traditionally came out more of, but that was over 20 years ago. I don't remember was the answer was. I ate a lot of M&Ms at work.
So I've heard that different colours last different amounts of time. For your next book can we have a coloured marker experiment? That way the marker that lasts the least will be the ultra-rare signed copy. Ooooohhhh!
This is the kind of research I love. Team Sharpie forever. They are my favorite for so many projects or even just to color with. So smooth, so many colors!!
I have been able to pay better attention to this video about permanent marker longevity than I was able to in the first three weeks of my Western Civ. Class. And I’m a history major.
I need the bleed-through metrics Hank! What marker can I use for my scores that won't bleed through??? (crayola washable currently at the top of my list)
I think it's also worth noting what kind of paper you're writing on. I personally find that I might like a particular pen more based on the smoothness or roughness of the paper.
Hank, I will tell you something about Amazon Basics. I run microbiology and we label all of our plastic petri plates with Sharpie. Sharpie is GREAT on smooth plastic. Once the ink it dries, it does not smear or bleed. Well, last year, I thought I'd try The Amazon Basics because they're supposed to be the same thing but cheaper, right? WRONG. The ink bleeds and it runs something fierce. We incubate our plates submerged in a water bath (sealed first in a foodsaver vacuum sealed bag so water doesn't get in the plates) and lo, all of the ink had rubbed off because of the *condensation*. Amazon Basics are not as permanent as they would have you believe.
Halfway through the video I thought to myself, “he’s such a nerd for going so deep with this” and then I realized that I just spent 9 minutes watching it. 😂
