My Nan had this pattern and made dresses for me through the 1970s. She modified the neckline, sleeves and the waist line for a bit of variety, but she used that pattern until I stopped wearing dresses. The 15mm seam allowance means you can either French or flat fell the seams. Most patterns of the time have larger seam allowances because domestic overlockers were not a thing.
I believe I sewed this pattern twice for myself on 1973 or 74 when I was 13 years old. One was in boho beige and the 2nd was forest green dot maxi. I wore them with wedges. Thanks for the memories!
So pretty, my Mum used that pattern to make my sister and I that same dress. Think the underbust is a variation of what is called empire line dress. great job Janelle 👏🌸
Yes Empire line so pretty as in Jane Austen and the Regency period, more vintage. Older sewers and knitting patterns were always clearer to understanding
Lovely dress and you look so cute in it. I remember my mom used to have that pattern, but I don't think she made it for me. First time I saw someone iron the interfacing to the dress. The way I was taught is to iron it to the facing pieces and then sew them to the neckline. Good job you did
Oh Janelle, it's adorable. It would be really cool if you could draft a pattern similar to it for your rosery army, without infringing copyright of course.
Well done, Janelle 💐. As you were cutting the extra hem bits off, I was thinking; you had your dress ties there! Back in the day the ties were the “thing!” Your necklace looks great; I love a little bling. Susan.
That dress is GORGEOUS! I love the alterations you made to fit your style, and I appreciate that you showed the misstep with hemming the sleeves. I get so frustrated when I have to pick out a seam... and pick it out again... and it's reassuring to know that everyone does it. Really can't get over how lovely this turned out. Excellent work!
Adorable!! Love all of your changes & I even like the pockets where they are because it doesn’t take away from the bodice…keeps the dress free flowing! Great job!!!!
That’s true actually! I plan to wear it a few more times and if they bother me I *might* unpick them and move them higher, but right now I really don’t think they are too bad!
For you this is vintage. For me it was what I was making in my twenties. This type of "waist" was very popular - it is more an empire style. I liked what you did with the sleeves. All patterns only came in one size - the size you needed. Your fabric choice suits the flirty dress and its floaty skirt.
Patterns from the 1970's are some of the best! The lines & directions on the pattern are clear & uncluttered (usually because use only get one or 2 sizes per pattern). The written instructions are usually easy to follow too.
Love the fabric and the pattern. Thank you for sharing how you rethink the sleeves and even taking out the stitches. I haven't sewn in many years and you made it very doable. Thank you
Very cute and sweet, any occasion almost. The pocket placement actually contributes to shape. The u neck displays your necklace. Great date dress. Great job.
Yes! I love all the Rosa pattern hacks shared so far, but I’ve been hesitant to buy the pattern since I don’t love the way high neck dresses look on me.
I am so happy to see this tutorial, i picked up this pattern about a month ago at vinnies. I’m such a beginner though, I’ve only ever made two dresses, which is a short and long version of your Rosa pattern x
I really could not read patterns, but after watching you cut out, iron and sew your project, I felt confident enough to make my own dress. I used a McCall's pattern, and so far it's turned out really well! (P.S. I love the background music 🥰)
I loved everything about this project! Loved the unique waistline of the dress and that gorgeous fabric. The sleeves that you modified looked adorable and fit the style of the dress perfectly. I'm also really glad you kept the scoop neckline; I think it mirrored the scoop hemline under the bust and balanced the whole dress. Lastly, these vintage patterns bring back so many good memories of me and my mom poring over pattern books at the fabric store when I was growing up. I owe a lot of my lovely outfits and special occasion dresses to her.
Hi Janelle, you never disappoint. Love your dress and the colour is perfect on you. Looking forward to seeing you sew the longer version of it. Definitely the right shape of sleeves, simply gorgeous. Thank you for sharing and such a pleasure watching you at work creating a masterpiece. Remain blessed xxx
So pretty, although I’m a little worried that this is a “vintage” pattern. I’ve used these my whole life and I’m over 50 years old. Does that make me vintage, too? 😂 Teasing aside, the instructions are so very detailed that I’ve always found it makes sewing pain free. Many of today’s patterns lack that specificity, making sewing involve more guesswork, unless you have a lot of experience. Thank goodness for UA-cam and instructors such as you!
I luv this pattern so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I cant wait to see the longer dress. that is totally amazing that it fits you, it was meant for you, a present from the heavens!!!!!!!!
this pattern looks so 👏good 👏 on 👏 you!👏I absolutely LOVE the neckline and the changes you made to the pattern as well! if you could teach us how to adapt the neckline to you rosa pattern that would be fantastic! love your channel girl, thanks for being such an inspiration!
It’s gorgeous you look lovely in it. I started sewing in the late 60s but the patterns were in one size so a few years ago I was in the loft clearing out and threw them all in the trash bin I thought there’s no way I would get into that size now Style patterns were my favourite, the video brought back loads of memories.
Oh Susan, the bin... I have paid upwards of new prices for the patterns from the 1960s -1980s. Especially when I have found a favourite pattern in my stash and realised I was missing an integral piece of the pattern. Nope, I'm not the same size, but I've learnt to grade the patterns up to fit me now.
Fabulous Janelle. This scoop neckline and puffy sleeves really suits you. You have brought the dress bang up to date by making subtle changes. Great video...😉
I love this dress on you,. The sleeves and neckline are beautiful. It's amazing what that high waisted cut does for the drape. Just lovely. Thanks for taking us through your process. I haven't done much garment sewing lately, but here in the states, we always had a 5/8ths inch seam. The important thing is to know where they intended the stitch line to be, to keep the size consistent. I subscribed.
I love the dress on you and I really like the waist! Really gives it vintage vibes:) I also just love to watch you sew these vintage patterns because of the different techniques. Thanks so much!
Love how this turned out! I actually have the exact same pattern, and made a dress with contrasting top and bottom, so you really see the "waistline" a lot more clearly, and it's super cute! I also wasn't sure about the scoop neck, but I love mine, too, and I left off the sleeves entirely. Love to see how two people make something from the same sewing pattern!!
Nice work 👍, and there is an easy method my mom taught me it for un-picking , that you can pull one of the 2 thread “ like gathering fabric “ and the thread will come out easy , whenever stitch length long it was easier. ☺️
Haha it’s and Oliso iron and makes me laugh so much, but it’s actually great for my wrists not having to sit it up over and over. It has little feet that pop up once you let go of the handle 😂
Ooo I love how this dress has turned out, Janelle! The elasticised sleeve opening is an extra lovely touch. I’m a huge fan of sewing with vintage patterns too and I’m looking forward to seeing more of your vintage pattern makes! 💖😍
That type of fabric feels a little better with a lining. Thought it was cuter a little longer. I love the dress. This was one of my favorite styles growing up
Thank you so much I really really enjoyed watching you create this amazing and awesome dress, the neckline is so cute on you. And the material is gorgeous too. Please stay safe and well too xxx Mags
That dress is adorable!!! That fabric was made for that pattern!! Only tweak I'd make cus I'm neurotic is that I'd make the skirt a single front and back panel. I don't really like having a center seam on skirts or dresses. But if you are working with a limited amount of fabric I can understand how splitting it up into 4 panels total would be helpful.
I have just subscribed. Love your creation, especially the sleeves and neckline. I don't know how to sew, but love watching the end product. From Australia
I love your vintage sewing patterns I’m collecting old patterns from my thrifting adventures I share on my own channel and I’m going to be making my first dress very soon! That should make a fun video lol
Can we all just take a moment to wonder how in the world you keep your ironing board cover so clean and white without all the burnt brown stains from the iron???
I’ve been wondering this myself! 😂 I made it from a secondhand baby cot sheet and I wonder if it is a bit more resistant to stains/marks compared to normal ironing board covers. What’s amazing is I haven’t even washed it since I made it!
Janelle... It's so cute! I love how it turned out. At first, I was surprised when you said you weren't using the cuff on the sleeves.. 'ok, I trust her' lol.. then you were just hemming it and my eyes popped 😱.. I was like, 'noooo, it'll be a little bland'.. I then thought, 'I wish she'd just shirr the ends a little'... and you did!! Man, I never thought a sewing video could have me on the edge of my seat at this time of the morning baaahahaha!!! Anyway, looks fantastic, perfect shape and size. Can you notice the bodice curve more up close? ❤👏😘
Haha a roller coaster for sure 😂 Thanks Sonia, I’m so pleased with the finished dress! You can definitely notice it, but not as much as I thought you would x
My Nan had this pattern and made dresses for me through the 1970s. The 15mm seam allowance means you can either French or flat fell the seams. Most patterns of the time have larger seam allowances because domestic overlockers were not a thing.
I was thinking the same about the seams ;-)
That’s really interesting, thank you for explaining that. I had wondered about the larger seam allowances! Deb x
thank you for this info.... am I right in thinking Janelle used some French seams on the skirt front & back pieces?
I believe I sewed this pattern twice for myself on 1973 or 74 when I was 13 years old. One was in boho beige and the 2nd was forest green dot maxi. I wore them with wedges. Thanks for the memories!

Wow that’s amazing!! I’m in love with it, and can’t wait to make the longer version 😍 x
It was a popular pattern, I wore variations of this dress for nearly a decade.
Such a flattering pattern for many shaped bodies😉💖
Yes Empire line so pretty as in Jane Austen and the Regency period, more vintage. Older sewers and knitting patterns were always clearer to understanding

Well done, Janelle 💐. As you were cutting the extra hem bits off, I was thinking; you had your dress ties there! Back in the day the ties were the “thing!” Your necklace looks great; I love a little bling. Susan.
Thanks Susan! You’re so right about the extra fabric, why didn’t I think of that?! Also, Matt bought me the necklace (he has great taste 😍) x
That dress is GORGEOUS! I love the alterations you made to fit your style, and I appreciate that you showed the misstep with hemming the sleeves. That pattern top with a romper bottom would be so adorable.
That would be SO cute!

I always appreciate the color palette and the prints of fabrics you choose! I love this dress and would absolutely LOVE to see the long version 😍😍

Love the fabric and the pattern. Thank you for sharing how you rethink the sleeves and even taking out the stitches. I haven't sewn in many years and you made it very doable. Thank you
Oh my. I made the long version of this dress out of satin backed crepe for my senior prom/dance in 1973. Thank you!
Very cute and sweet, any occasion almost. The pocket placement actually contributes to shape. The u neck displays your necklace. Great date dress. Great job.
I really love this neckline! Have you ever considered doing a pattern hack tutorial on how to alter the necklines for some of your own patterns?
Totally! I have lots of ideas, just need to find the time to do them all 😊

So sweet on you! I spent my Saturday evening sewing a skirt while listening to your channel’s funky music ☺️ I find it very motivating!
How lovely! Glad I could keep you company 🥰
It was like sewing inception!
oh my!! That is totally adorable! Perfect pattern to fabric and it fits you like a glove.
Your videos have helped me so much! You’re a wonderful teacher.

Thanks so much lovely! I’m so glad you enjoyed watching along 🧡 Have a great week x
You have an amazing talent and patience
I love this dress and the fabric! I prefer what you chose to do with the sleeves also, it suits your style much better!
So pretty, although I’m a little worried that this is a “vintage” pattern. I’ve used these my whole life and I’m over 50 years old. You are not vintage dear, it means you like graceful clothes.
Well, in theory, vintage means more than 20 years old. So I guess I might be vintage as well, since I’m over 40 years old 🤣
Yep, 20+ years is what I was always told! I find it so strange that things from the ‘90s are considered vintage now (including me 😂)
I too had this pattern in approximately 1976. I made two versions, one long and one short, both in seersucker.
What a neat way to do the gathering on the sleeves. I've never done sheering, but I'm going to give it a go on my next sewing project.
Oh yeah do try it! It’s my go to method for sleeves 😍
It’s so interesting that you could only get one size at a time. Im glad they changed that! Thanks for watching lovely x
Well that came out just perfect. The neck is just right and that waist line is a lovely quirk.
Aw thank you! It was such a fun one to make 😄 x
Fabulous Janelle. This scoop neckline and puffy sleeves really suits you. You have brought the dress bang up to date by making subtle changes. Great video...😉
Aw thank you! 🧡 x
That is just adorable on you! I do love a good mushroom color as you described it! Just PERFECT!

omg the dress turned out so gorgeous!! and it suits the fabric so much too!
I really love how it turns out. The neckline is amazing and suits you really well
This would be beautiful in linen!!
I can’t wait to try it! 😍
This was my first wedding dress pattern. Loved it.
Late 70’s. Long sleeves. Layered lace in areas. Put inset of lace in neckline also.
I love coming to your channel/videos for sewing inspiration. This is such a beautiful dress and a great fabric find! 💕
Thanks so much Sarah! I’m so glad you find my content inspiring x
What a cute style! I love the bust line and agree that shirred sleeves suit it so much.
Thank you for showing us your mistakes as well - can relate. It's a lovely dress - looks like something from my childhood - I'm retro!
I love the dress on you and I really like the waist! Really gives it vintage vibes:) I also just love to watch you sew these vintage patterns because of the different techniques. Thanks so much!
I loooove when you do these vintage patterns!
I actually wore dresses just like this back in the 70's, when I was a teen. I still love the style.
Those sleeves and that scoop neckline just really suited u
Thanks lovely! I love both of the details together 😍
The pattern is great.
The video is detail and clear.
Like it and thanks for sharing
Perfect pattern & material for you. Sandi
So beautiful! I found myself enjoying the dress you were wearing equally. One of my favourites from your previous makes.
My dresses were all made by my mom when I was in my teens, and that pattern looks very familiar. We wore the dresses pretty short in the early 70’s.
You always look so lovely in your creations! I love the puffy sleeves. Well done!
Nice work 👍, and there is an easy method my mom taught me it for un-picking , that you can pull one of the 2 thread “ like gathering fabric “ and the thread will come out easy , whenever stitch length long it was easier. ☺️
I’ll have to try that, I hate unpicking so much!
That's my dream dress! Everything about it is perfect! The fabric choice, the pattern (and pockets!)... adorable!
This turned out beautifully! I love making vintage patterns too, I love seeing a bit of history come to life
SUPER cute, I'm considering buying that pattern now if I can find it. The sleeves are gorgeous, alot better than the standard cuff.
Love the dress! Can you please discuss the iron your using?! It looks like some sort of magic!!
Haha it’s and Oliso iron and makes me laugh so much, but it’s actually great for my wrists not having to sit it up over and over. It has little feet that pop up once you let go of the handle 😂
This is an adorable dress. It is perfect for you. Looks great. Love the fabric.
You’re amazing, Janelle. Such a perfect dress that suits you beautifully.🎉🎉🎉🎄
Aw thanks so much! I’m so happy with it 😍
Dress is beautiful Janelle 💕 I love watching your sew alongs. I would love it if you were to share how you sew your zippers please . 😊💐
You make sewing dresses look so easy! I have a similar pattern and plan on making this dress. Hope it comes out as good as yours.
Ooo I love how this dress has turned out, Janelle! The elasticised sleeve opening is an extra lovely touch. I’m a huge fan of sewing with vintage patterns too and I’m looking forward to seeing more of your vintage pattern makes! 💖😍
Thanks so much! 🧡
Such a pretty dress and very inspiring to watch. Thank you ☺️
That neckline, silhouette and colour are stunning on you !
That type of fabric feels a little better with a lining. Thought it was cuter a little longer. I love the dress. This was one of my favorite styles growing up
Your dress came out so cute. I really like how the sleeves look. Good choice!
Thank you! 🧡
It is a very flattering line.
The dress looks adorable on you!! I love the color and print. The sleeves are so cute!! Nice work!!
So pretty! If you make the pattern again you could emphasize curved up middle piece by doing it in a contrasting fabric… 🤔 might be cute.
I love that pattern and the fabric. I wish I had more time to sew.
You make some of the prettiest dresses.
So pretty!!! I’m gonna try to make a similar dress cause I’m love with this pattern! ❤️
Thank you so much I really really enjoyed watching you create this amazing and awesome dress, the neckline is so cute on you. And the material is gorgeous too. Please stay safe and well too xxx Mags
Perfect on you Janelle.
Interesting to see the interfacing fused to the bodice pieces rather than the facings. I've never seen that before.
Thank you 🧡 Neither had I, but it worked really well!
So happy to have found your channel! Love the colors and patterns!
Lovely vintage make🦹🏾♂️👌🏾👍😍
that pattern was made for you. the choice of fabric is stunning. you look amazing. i am now on the hunt for that pattern.
Beautiful pattern, looking forward to seeing your next version of it.
Your dress looks beautiful on you a lovely pattern, the vintage patterns are great, i love all your makes x
Aw thanks so much! 🧡
Wow fits you perfect and I love sew slings! They help me
Awesome sewing ! Beautiful fabric, beautiful dress !
I have just subscribed. Love your creation, especially the sleeves and neckline. I don't know how to sew, but love watching the end product. From Australia
Such gorgeous fabric!
That is so cute. I hope you make several in different lengths and different colors and different excess
This suits you so much, that colour is great on you
Oh my goodness! I LOVE this dress. It’s stunning! 😍 You made it look so easy lol
Thank you! I’m soo happy with it 😍😍
Excellent!! Dreamy fabric
Vintage patterns are definitely becoming more popular these days, I’m just about to make a 1940s tea dress from a vintage pattern 🤞
I really enjoy this series! I can relate to finding different instructions in secondhand patterns too! 😂
Haha it’s so funny! At least I had all the pieces this time!
I love your vintage sewing patterns I’m collecting old patterns from my thrifting adventures I share on my own channel and I’m going to be making my first dress very soon! That should make a fun video lol
The dress looks so nice 😀
I had that pattern, back when it was new lol
I used to love that dress
Wow, this is such a lovely dress!😍 And I love the neckline very much! 😍 Also the fabric is beautiful😊
It really suits you and the colour
Lol I am 57 now. My Mom made matching dresses from that pattern for my older sister and me. Yellow fabric with white lace overlay.
Unpicking is the worst! Beautiful dress :)
Super cute Janelle! Those sleeves?! LOVE them. x
I’m soo happy with them! They are perfect for this style of dress 😍
Loved the pattern and fabric.Sadly, our vintage shops never seem to have sewing patterns ,fabric or knitting/crochet patterns and wool.
