I am just about ready to start working on the minor scales, so this video was prescient! I had forgotten the trick I learned last year to identify the relative minor scale name that is associated with the major scale on the circle of fifths, so I had to work it out manually. For those who don't know...you look at a major scale, and move down three half steps, and that is your note name for the relative minor scale. It has the same sharps or flats as the major scale, it just begins in a different place. So, if you are in C, then count down.. B...B flat...and A. So the relative minor scale of C major is A minor. It's all about the interval distance patterns that lead to our perception of scales and modes. Learning music is very much like learning a language. There is SO much to discover. Gracie is a real treasure for all of us who are on that journey.
The other pattern that I have found that helps me a lot is BEADGCF FCGDAEB Find the Bead it shows up everywhere. The other thing that you mentioned in another video is the play one, skip one which gives you chords and staff notation: CEGBDFA which is equal to 1,3,5,7,9,11,13 which is so simple, I have been studying and struggling with this for 5 years, thank you so much for your effort and teaching style!

Your videos are great! I self learned guitar and eventually became decent at soloing, but never learnt theory. I always thought that music theory is boring and useless but your videos made me change my mind!

Really cool , I started music theory in 8th grade and now I'm 63 . Every day I have some aspect of theory running thru my brain. This was a cool tip and really helpful.

That is a very helpful video as I still struggle with knowing the minor scales. Thank you, Gracie ! Another thing I thought whilst watching, which helped me here, is that they all add up to 7 - if you are struggling to remember the harder one then : The Fs = 3 sharps / 4 flats (total of 7). The Ds = 1 flat, 6 sharps. The Bs = 2 sharps, 5 flats. Hope it helps someone. It made sense to me, anyway! 😆

this carefully and perfectly illustrates victor wooten saying how sharps and flats always add up to 7 in the "music theory is simple" video as well as how useful the concept of enharmonic equivalents is. no more "well, E# is just nonsense, music theory just makes stuff up" now you still have to put in the work and memorize your 6 keys (instead of 12) but at least you know there's a logic to it, which helps connect the dots and make em stick

I'm climbing the learning curve on music theory and love your videos. This one was very helpful, too. This approach seems easier to me. To figure out the accidentals to a minor scale, I usually just derive the relative major key, which can be discovered by looking a minor 3rd up from the root of the minor scale (e.g. An F# minor scale will have the same key signature as an A major scale -- "A", being a minor 3rd up from "F#"). This way, I only need to know the key signatures of the major scales (and only half of them). This seems to work out.
Great job music is so much like math . But with music it is so much more it creates a strong emotion connection to everything we do . There is so many way to understand its meaning thank you for unlocking some ways of understanding this expression.
You could actually raise a half-step from a sharp key to another sharp key with the same tonic letter, or you could lower from a flat key to another flat key, but that would however lead to a theoretical key, in which one or more double-sharps or double-flats would be present in the key signature, so it’s not usually practical to use.
It is so good you are teaching others to learn how to play minor keys. This is good spirit . may the our Savior Jesus add to you more and bless you. Thanks.

I just prefer to try and count back 3 semitones to form the minor scales i.e. A flat major is F minor and A major equal to F# minor. E flat major is equal to C minor and E major is equal to C# minor. G major is equal to E minor. B flat major is equal to G minor and B major equal to G sharp. F sharp major is equal to D# minor. C sharp major is A sharp minor with a raised 7th making a double sharp on G for harmonic and F and G double sharp for the melodic ascending only. Please correct me if I am wrong. Another clear and concise lesson that makes sense of things for me. Thanks, Gracie! Beyond the scope of this lesson, I am curious about how harmonic and melodic minors are described in music notation key signatures. Specifically, is the natural minor used in the key signature, and then accidentals applied throughout the piece to indicate harmonic or melodic minor? That's my guess, anyway, since we hear so much about the major and minor keys derived from the circle of 4ths/5ths. Cheers!
