      @@ddwow566 As Gracie explained, remember just one flat is the key of F major. So all the other notes in the scale are naturals ie the only note to be played flattened is Bb. Write out the notes on the stave eg Treble clef. From the bottom. D E F G A B C D all these notes will be played natural except where you see the Bb . Simply on the stave (lines and spaces) where flats are placed in the key signature those notes should be played flattened. Alternatively where the key signature is shown with sharps those notes are played sharp.

    After playing guitar for almost 28 years and learning by myself I decided to formally get a Music Degree in my country but the teachers I had made me feel so bad because they wanted to show off instead of teaching. I'm a lawyer with several degrees in my career and I've been also a teacher but I always wanted my students to be better than me. The music teachers I had made this so so so hard that I was almost frustrated. Why couldn't they explain this signatures understanding this easy? Why make everything look so difficult? I love you Gracie! Thanks for all the knowledge you give to us! Blessings!

      Your comment reminds me of my youth in elementary band class, the teacher asking to see my hands and then declaring they were too small, that my fingers could not even cover the key holes, that my hands were not the hands of a clarinetist. Raising his own mighty hands, he declared triumphantly, "THESE are the hands of a clarinetist!" Why, I wondered, were my parents obliged to pay public school taxes, so that self-serving jackass could call himself a teacher?

    For the b's: It is always a perfect fourth down the last written b on the sheet. This also works for the first b of course, which is F Major (b flat down a perfect fourth leads you to F major). With that system you always check the last b or # that is written (last b: go down a perfect fourth, last # move up a half step), so it might be easier to memorize for some people.

    My first guitar teacher taught me a lot but he always said "you just have to memorize it". So many make theory seem so ridiculously hard. I always felt like it was just patterns and you only have to know the pattern and then you can extrapolate almost all of the rest.

    • @GracieTerzian
      @GracieTerzian  3 роки тому +6

      Haha.. well he's not wrong... you do ultimately need to memorize things. But the question is, in what order do you memorize things? Obviously you can't memorize everything at first... but if you memorize certain things first, it is a lot easier and more manageable. I think if you memorize your major scales first, a LOT of other things in music theory make sense and become easier to memorize and comprehend. And before you memorize your major scales, it's good to memorize the circle of fifths.. so then you can always figure out the notes in your major scales using the circle.

    In a major key signature the last sharp notated is the leading tone (major seventh), the last flat notated is the subdominant (perfect fourth), and the second to last flat notated is the tonic (note the major key is named for). Cool, thanks!

    I’ve played trumpet for about 8 years and I’ve always been thinking about my keys in concert pitch over “trumpet pitch”. I now know to think primarily in trumpet pitch to avoid confusion and better understand how the keys behave
