Diet Noodles Blamed for ‘Unholy Levels of Gastric Upset and Rage’ | NBC4NY I-Team

- TV host and jewelry expert Carol Brodie watches her weight religiously. So when she heard about a 15-calorie per serving product called “Better Than Pasta,” she bought it.
“If I ate three or four bags of this, I was still looking at around 100 calories, so how great is that?" Brodie told NBC New York. "And I was going to get to fill up!”
But Brodie says her diet dream became a gastric catastrophe - in a hurry.
According to a federal lawsuit filed this month, Brodie was hospitalized after eating four packages of Better Than Pasta last summer. The complaint says she developed a “congealed mass of noodles” that blocked her digestive tract, forcing her to remain on a liquid diet “consisting entirely of Diet Coke and soup for longer than a month.”
“Every time I felt like my body was trying to get rid of it, that big mass would just hit so nothing could come out,” Brodie said. “It felt like I was dying, like I was choking to death.”
Brodie’s attorney, Rosemarie Arnold, says the makers of Better Than Pasta, a Wisconsin company called Green Spot Foods, should have known the product carried a substantial risk of serious digestive problems - partly because there are numerous complaints on Amazon, the platform on which Brodie purchased the noodles.
“When you swallow it, it doesn’t dissolve in your stomach and that’s why it was able to keep you full for so long,” Arnold said. “This company knew that this product was not safe to consume but they put it on Amazon.”
Brodie’s lawsuit also accuses Amazon of putting consumers at risk by allowing Better Than Pasta to be sold on the platform. A spokesman for Amazon declined to comment on the lawsuit. Better than Pasta has a 3.5-star rating on Amazon, but the I-Team found multiple consumers who wrote reviews echoing Brodie’s complaint.
4 bags is 8 servings? Sounds like she needs help for a binge eating issue rather than a lawsuit.
Agreed
Right
Right!
4 bags is not 8 serving, technically its like 20 serving but the brand she used would say its 12 servings.
Right half a bag and I'm good! She just wants money
No shit lady! After I ate 4 bags of noodles I would have the same thing. Everyone would.
I been eating four bags of this at a time almost everyday. I had to stop though because its 25$ for a box of six bags :(
@@warhawkbm you're eating 800g of just noodles at a time?
This lady didnt practice moderation at all.
Some study said 1 oz of alcohol a day will help you live 10 years longer. So I’m thinking if I drink 10 oz a day………….🥳
100 years longer!
🎉
10oz a day? You gotta pump those numbers up, those are rookie numbers!
Yeah, no kidding. I eat these noodles all the time and if you don’t drink lots of water, you’ll have problems. Maybe she should should have done a wee bit of research before consuming 8 servings of this stuff in one day. Stupid to eat mass quantities of anything without doing at least a small amount of investigation. Eat four pounds of ground beef and see if that hurts you. Talk about a frivolous lawsuit.
Why on earth are you eating FOUR bags???
Greed and it serves her right
I think she ate 4 bags in 4 days
Only in America: “breaking news, woman consumes 8 servings of an unfamiliar fad food, feels poorly, and has amassed her lawyers.” No wonder people around the world hate us.
It's not even a fad food, it's A Common food in Asia thats making its way over here.
No you just hate yourself. And I don’t blame you.
Do better, Carol
It's a normal common food, not a fad food. We are just so unhealthy here in America that eating a high fiber food sends us to the hospital lmao
U got quiet
I eat two servings (1 bag) everyday. I don't get hungry for a while after I eat them. Takes like 16 hours to feel hungry again. A little gas for me, but not unbearable.
Is this good for weight Loss and replacement of meals we consume in daily basis please suggest me.
@@latakishan1222YES
Because why eat 4 bags of anything NEW and not expect to have any trouble with it? Eat half a pack, maybe? Kids eat konjac jellies.
I ate four bags with spaghetti it didn't phase me any, felt better than eating out. Use it daily now for homemade ramen 😋
@@darkshadowsaver you ate 4 bags in one sitting? 800g? Bs.
Okay soooooo….. don’t eat multiple bags/servings. Eat one. Wait a day or two. Eat another (if you want to).
Her stomach issues were because she isn’t used to having so much fiber. These kinds of noodles are a regular food in Japan, and I’ve had them many times. It only hurts you if you usually eat garbage, because they’re actually healthy.
Exactly
Because it’s widely used in Japan and Korea I was open to eating quite a bit of it. Do you think the amount that she ate would do harm? Have you known people to have eaten 3 to 4 packs?
Also, eating like a glutton - _4 packages, in one sitting?_ - is just asking for intestinal punishment.
And why on Earth eat that many packs?
Seriously. It's crazy that eating some fiber sent her to the hospital. How can someone be that unhealthy
I have tried konjac noodles and had no stomach upset at all. Carol tried a huge amount of the noodles which was her problem. It does dissolve in your digestive tract. The attorney is trying to make money.
Um no it does not "dissolve" or rather doesn't digest or get absorbed in the digestive tract, since it's pure fiber. That's why it could potentially block your intestine if eaten in huge amounts like this.
So she ate what i guess to be about 20 servings in one sitting and got sick. Genius move. What else makes you sick eating 20 servings of it.
4 bags?? No shit your stomach got fucked up 🤣
Complete rubbish these noodles are fine, anything for attention.
You western poeple all pampered. We have eaten this for 1000 years with no issues
Trust me, we aren't all like this, and the ones that aren't are sick of the ones that are
I’ve been eating Konjac since I was a kid and I’m cubed form. Most people think you just have to heat them up but you have to cook them. Think of it like cooking a potato. The best way is to dry fry them to prepare and then you can stir fry or use them as ramen. Not to mention she ate 4 packs!! Like the saying goes, too much of anything can be bad for you.
This is a very helpful comment. I wasn't sure how to prepare it. Thanks!
Thank you indeed. Can you kindly explain how you « dry fry » them?
@@ceciliafellouse Sure! Dry frying, you just stir them on med-high heat in a non-stick frying pan until it stops sizzling. You shouldn't need any oil. I like to stir-fry meat and veges and toss them in last after the dry-frying preparations.
@@ceciliafellouse just throw them in a pan on heat and fry them without anything, they won't burn or stick. And once they're dry, I throw them in together with whatever sauce I'm cooking, and cook them together in it, they absorb the sauce wonderfully
@@tekkneakzthanks!
Excess seems to be the problem, not just the noodles. I wouldn't drink 4 bottles of wine.
I would !
@@lance2245 I second that
You're to eat no more than a cup at a time.
I guarantee she failed to read at the basic level on how to ingest these noodles and it's ⚠️ warning against overconsumption & necessity of drinking plenty of water to offset the high levels of fiber naturally present in the noodles.
And like any MORBIDLY UNEDUCATED Karen, she seeks to finger point & punish rather than take some level of accountability for her folly. Like the rest of the world cares 💅🏼
Should not be sold to dickheads.
She ate 4 bags of fiber. How is that the food’s fault? Meanwhile, all the people in this world who need a lawyer and can’t afford one. Give me a break. 🙄👎🏻
She ate a family worth of servings and complained about a stomach ache???😂
That lawyer sounded like a witch from the medieval era
😹😹😹
durrr I ate 300 servings of fiber and feel sick, I should sue for this
Such idiocy from the consumer and "news" jumped on the false claims. No one told you to eat 4 bags in one meal!!!
If I were the judge, I'd have her mouth sewn- to stop complaining, and better- to stop eating!
yeah, these noodles have always …done things… to my bowls but that’s also because I would tend to eat an entire bag which is double the serving I should have. In moderation and with plenty of water they are fine.
bowls?..
@@thjonez yeah, they do crazy things to the bowls you put them in
@@metalmarten3478 good one
The fact that this was a serious story after hearin "...4 bags..." was hilarious 😂
What kind of glutton would eat 4 BAGS of noodles? One bag of these fill you up! Be responsible for your own choices. This food is safe, but ANYTHING in EXCESS can cause a problem.
Those noodles are great, but you can’t eat four bags in one sitting. What is wrong with some people?
This woman lacks common sense... she at 8 servings...common damn senses...
That bezoar saved Ron Weasley
I just ate 400 grams of these noodles. I feel great 😆.
For heavens sake I have been using these for years I would NEVER Binge on them - be at least wise in your eating - no binging -no shortcuts just sensible dieting.
I just bought two bags today. That’s why I’m on here for research. Anything new I ever try I do some digging around. I think I’ll stay away for now. My fiber intake is low
They're fine if you drink plenty of water.
Yet people are so concerned with an FDA approved product. They approve whomever they have a financial interest in. SMH!
I started eating these to lose weight a year ago. They’re fine. People just abuse that calorie count to stuff themselves then wonder why they get sick. They’re great for weight loss if you know what to do with them.
Can't change stupid. . . . 3 - 4 bags is good for 6 - 8 people!
Quantity is the key, 1/3 or half bag is ok for me, but man, last time I eat a whole bag, it upset my stomach in a gradual way, I can't sleep at all, as if it sits in my stomach and do not want to move. But I do loose some weight the next day because 97% are made of water, or probably it's the bile salts that I start to take that make me loose weight.
97% of what is made of water?
A person with a right mind wouldnt go overboard eating anything, even if u drink too much water u get water intoxication, so water drinks company suppose to put warning sign on their water bottle packageing? is not the food problem, is that woman problem. Instead of blaming others, people should really educate themself smh
I just had 1 bag and it's very filling, if she ate 3+ bags in one go that's quite a lot
This is because clearly she does't have enough fibre in her diet, konjec is very high in fibre. for most people trying to lose weight this is a non issue.
also who the hell trying to lose weight eats the equivalent of 8 servings of noodles in one sitting?
Just make cauliflower rice. Steam 400g frozen cauliflower, chop it up a lot and there you have "rice" with only 100 calories. The same can be done with broccoli. If you want noodles then I can't help you! I just use the above as a replacement. Whatever you might have noodles with, you can have rice with... just not this miracle garbage!
Sponsored by the Carbohydrate Industry. Shame!
How much did she eat!!!! And if you are already constipated I wouldn’t eat them. Japan has been eating for 10000’s of years! Maybe check how they eat them.
They probably ate too much. America is a place where healthy fresh food were so expensive compared to fast food/ junk food.
Chew your food
Konjac has been eaten for centuries. It's perfectly safe. But it is *mostly dietary fiber*. This woman is used to eating regular pasta, which is mostly carbs. If you don't eat a gigantic portion all at once, it passes just fine. But eventually if you are eating enough pasta and bread, especially white, it can form hard masses and diverticuli as well. When she gets diverticulitis from eating unhealthily, is she going to sue those manufacturers too??
she eat to much.........4 bags?
Does this go for shiritaki noodles as well? I’ve been eating them for a while no issues at all
they are the same
My stomach has been horrible bc of these too.
4 bags? Don't eat 4 bags of anything!
She ate 1.2 kg of pasta one time ... thats stupid with any other type of food...
Not shit. Konjac noodles been used in Asia for a long time. No normal personal eat that much
I eat this all of the time without any problems, but why would any educated person eat something that they have never heard of before without researching the product, especially if it sounds too good to be true?
Those noodles also have oat fiber in them. Anything is dangerous in excessive amounts.
This doesn't need fda action, it needs a bit of education. As with ANY fiber product, you shouldn't eat a bunch more than your stomach is used to digesting (because it will cause bowel and digestion issues), and never eat it dried (because dry fiber absorbs tons of water, and is therefore a serious choking hazard).
Omg it says right on the bag not to eat more than a serving a day or risk the consequences. Haha I'm trying a half serving for the first time in my lunch tomorrow. Will see.
LOL no crap eating four bags.
She's obsessed with her looks
I eat a huge amount of these noodles (homemade not storebought) daily. NEVER had a problem ever.
I could find the same customer comments about aspirin on Amazon.
My stomach can't digest this noodle even if it's small portion.
Me too. All these people saying just eat a little. A little is way too much for me. Then again some people drink lots of milk daily and I drink oat milk as I'm LI. I guess what I'm saying is we're all different? There must be a market for these things, but not for you or I obviously lol.
It’s fiber. No one can digest fiber 😂
4 bags...hello! See an eating disorder specialist! You have an issue with binge eating.
I eat it all the time but half a bag at a time. I feel fine
Thank you. Just bought this, but ate only half of bag.
You're welcome
Ate 4 bags then complains 😂
I'm suing hostess because it made me fat.
🤣🤣🤣
Look any time you get a new food from another culture you always research. By googling it you can easily see its banned in some countries. and why eat so much,
That's absolute bullshit and you know it. Australia has it banned because it's a choking hazard...because it's slippery. Context. Context. Context.
Some tips are wash it, dry it and take a pair of scissors and cut it up into small pieces. Then store that in a container for future use. Chew very intentionally and drink lots of water. Also pls don't eat 4 bags in one go and don't buy food from Amazon.
Lmaooooo what a glutton! She had so many servings! At this point, we need to ban alcohol again since we have petitions over banning noodles. Also, tobacco since it can make you poop more! I-Team, help me!
Her own fault for overdosing
yeah eating 3-4 bags is kind of stupid
Why would she eat 4 bags at a time
It's a hit or miss for me. I would only eat 1 pack at a time with broth, veggies, and some meat. Most of the time I'm ok, stomach feels fine. But I'm avoiding them now because the sharp pain from those odd days when my stomach decided not to like konjac was too unbearable. I'd rather eat more lettuce instead.
Lettuce is just water. You will feel hungry again fast.
😂 OMG what a stupid thing to do 🤦♀️ You eat one serving, not 8 😂
I was a grunt, these noodles fear to visit my guts!
Just replace high calorie foods for vegetables. It’s way cheaper plus natural
I ate 1/2 of the bag and my belly hurt for 24hrs
Never felt pain like this and I’m super healthy so not eating a balance diet isn’t the reason
my husband and I had some yesterday and we feel very bad, how did you flush it out of your system?
Same thing will happen if you consume too much physillium husk.
Uh...you ate too much. 1 serving is 1 serving
Amazon is sketchy y’all.
This posting is pure alarmist nonsense. What's up - is some 'diet food producer' now losing money??!I
I have dietary problems and kind of like shiritaki noodles. Not love them - I prefer ramen, but need to keep that to a minimum.
But - even with shiritaki - not in huge quantity. Consumed in reasonable amounts I find them fine and a real help. In my case that's 1/2 packet - 80 gms not 200 - and certainly not 3 or 4 times a day.
Literally dozens of recipes, if not 100s. Great with shiritaki mushrooms and something out of the spices drawer, and always worth experimenting with.
Oh - and thorough pre-washing ESSENTIAL.
Some people react badly? Well, of course - where can we find ANYTHING in the panoply of human foodstuffs that isn't going to do that to somebody somewhere??? After all, no-one's banning Big Macs.
I’ve been eating this noodles… and their rice and nothing had happened…. I think it depends on the brand..,the brand she ate; I’ve never seen before
Probably a cheap ass American brand
I love these, holy smokes how much did she eat 😂 oh my goodness
My brother-in-law had to go to the emergency room after eating these noodles! The noodles completely blocked his digestive system.
Damn. I hope he's ok!
A single pack is like 4 servings. It’s fiber. Of course your stomach will hurt especially if you aren’t used to eating lots of fiber or you don’t know to drink way more water when eating fiber.
I eat a low carb diet and every time I eat these noodles I feel it for a couple of days
I got so sick from these
@@keithshepard2863 The devils noodles
I ate them yesterday and am still full
If you get a reaction, you're either not eating enough fiber or you're allergic.
@@keithshepard2863 Same. Just because it works for the Japanese doesn't mean it's a one size fits all. Some of us suffer after eating these. I am vegetarian and a regular faster. I dont have a bunch of gunk backing up my system lol
why they never discuss about McDonald?
I’m in pain right now and don’t know how to get rid of it I’ve been in bed all day and worry the pain won’t go away it hurts so much
The secret was to go straight from the dining table to the bathroom.
Drink water
4 bags😮
You have to eat small amounts
Amazon is still selling this.
Why would you do that?
Did she scarf 4 bags tho at once????
That’s strange cause I ate it before and so did my family but we didn’t have any problems
TLDR: "One woman says". That's all, don't bother watching it.
I ate two packets of konjac noodle spaced out yesterday and suffered the worst pain I have ever experienced in my life
4 bags!!!! Omg too many bags oh no just one bag at once omg and you have to cut them up very small then you cook it
Plastic noodles
Love them eat them all the time. No problem.
