    1. less likely to develop dementia/Alzheimers
    2. makes you more empathetic (fiction more; fiction also builds social skills)
    3. makes you happier
    4. appear to be smarter because stronger vocabulary
    5. actually does make you smarter (new white matter in the brain)

      I got dyslexia and ADHD, so I basically have to deal with all the dyslexia challenges and then deal with my mind spacing out, getting easily distracted, and even though I am reading I am thinking about other things and no realising that I am reading without any comprehension... But even with all this i force myself to read.

      I used to read a lot of psychology and philosophy and they used to depress me and I would constantly have existential crisis. I was able to turn my life around when I stopped consuming that bullshit and started being playful and reading a lot of fiction. Now life is no longer serious, it is fun and full of wonder, I travel the world and different worlds and visit various galaxies with my imagination... yes fiction, it is indeed the fountain of youth.

    When I was in school, I got bullied for being a bookwork. I remember the school mean girls asked what I liked to do, and when I said read, one said in a very disgusted voice.
    "Is that all you do-read?"
    I remember turning away and feeling embarrassed and ashamed of my love for books. But now I see that I'm better off than those girls ever were. I bet all they did back then and now is just play on social media and watch streaming services that deaden their brains. I'm glad that reading has become a more socially acceptable hobby nowadays instead of something to be bullied over. Bookworm prime worldwide!

    So, in order to improve vocabulary we have to just read it and try to figure out the meaning of them through the context of the story. Gotcha! Rather than just just searching the meaning of the words and memorizing them.

    • @MatthewSchaefer
      @MatthewSchaefer  Рік тому +2

      There are definitely different ways to gain vocabulary. One of the more effective long term ways is through understanding context (this is how children learn words, for instance. You don't teach a 2 year old vocab through definition, but rather through using the words).
      You can also spend your time reading fiction next to a dictionary, but I find looking words up breaks immersion.
      Thanks for the comment!

    Hello from Sydney.
    You seems like you read a lot. I like reading book but I am having trouble with choosing right book for my self. When I read book I usually lost interest. Some of them are hard to understand for non native speaker like me. I attract books that based on true story and human history. Also my English is intermediate. If you have any book suggestion that written by simple word and interesting, please leave comment. Thank you

    • @MatthewSchaefer
      @MatthewSchaefer  3 роки тому +1

      Hi! Thanks for your comment and question!
      I would suggest intermediate readers could focus on some well written children's books (think aged 1st-5th grade) They usually use simple language, use good context to build vocabulary and are quick paced/not boring.
      I recommend trying classic childrens books, as opposed to starting with random ones.
      Try a book like "my father's dragon" and then age up or down depending on how difficult the read is.
      Hope this helps!
