    Reading improves your conversational skills
Because reading increases your vocabulary and your knowledge of how to correctly use new words, reading helps you clearly articulate what you want to say. The knowledge you gain from reading also gives you lots to talk about with others

While reading is great, it’s only one part of the equation. Reading is the consumption while writing is the production. This isn’t to say that you have to strive to be a novelist, but if you exercise writing your thoughts about what you read, it builds understanding and helps you to develop key ideas.
Writing and reading go hand in hand. When done in concert, you maximize the benefits from both. If I read something that strikes me, but never write the thoughts down, then it is lost, never to be articulated.

I have been reading for a week straight so far. My advice:
1: find a book that sounds interesting
2: have a place to stop. i.e 3 pages, end of the chap. ect.
3:just...do it. It was really boring the first couple of days but I forced myself and now I look forward to it every day
4: put it on your to do list. When you ask yourself “what do I have to do today??” Make sure you say READ my book because then you won’t forget and it will become part of your day.
5: reward yourself after, tell yourself that you are amazing and that it took self discipline to do that and you did it. Being proud of yourself makes your brain want to do it again in order to receive praise.
    I hope this helped someone☺️

      @DaveSimkus 3 роки тому +26

@@Jc50gt I'm an avid reader myself and an amateur neuroscientist, psychologist and philosopher. Reading alone is not going to make you economically successful in life. If we look at it from a purely statistical view, the largest determining factor of success is the family you are born into. If you are born into poor circumstances with neglectful parents, no socializing, poor neighborhood, no positive contacts; then it doesn't matter how many books you read, you will still likely remain poor. Now, I still love books and recommend them to everyone because they do have a lot of value in terms of developing better self-awareness and a wide knowledge base. However, don't be fooled into thinking that reading will make you successful.

@@DaveSimkus reading books changes your mind, your attitude towards life, your thinking, your understanding of inner and outer selves. Hence , you take steps, baby steps, make choices , make decisions and hence take “risks”. One needs to be reasonable on taking risks. But risk is not something one takes out of the blue. There is lot of thought behind it. The thought power and knowledge you gain from reading books will help you take risks for better success in life.

I stopped reading books around my senior year in High School, devastatingly so. I simply couldn’t focus. The story couldn’t hold my attention because I was too distracted on life and what was going on in my life outside of school. I lost my imagination. I’m 24 now. Around 22 I started reading comic books and graphic novels. I really fell back in love with reading good compelling stories. A couple years later, I’m reading Stephen King books, Ernest Hemingway books, Arthur C Clarke sci fi books, William Gibson Sci Fi books, Phillip K Dick sci books, Grant Morrison comics, Frank Miller comics, Alan Moore and many many more writers. I must say I’ve completely fallen head over heels in love with reading again, and it’s all I want to do now a days, get lost in a good book. Reading can be challenging, but that’s the fun part of it. Getting through a dense story can be very rewarding. Reading is underrated af and I hope people give it a chance again.

Looking back during my childhood, I disliked reading very much, but now I wish I read more back then because it’s not as bad as I thought it was. The power of reading a story and putting your imagination to use by visualizing it or learning something new about someone or something, through a book, fascinates me. Reading was a big help battling my depression. There were times I wasn't able to get out of my bed and thought about commiting suicide in an endless cycle. My brain just never stopped thinking about it and it was truly exhausting. Then I began to pick up books and when I read it was the only time my brain shut up thinking about suicide and how worthless I feel.
The different perspetives of characters also animated me to see my own problems, thoughts and life from a different point of view and so reading books finally kickstarted small impulses of changing my way of thinking, getting help, leaving my bed and so.
Now, after many years of therapy and conquering my depression I'm still reading a lot. Disappearing into the world of books is my safe space and I'm highly grateful for it.

For fiction books this can really get you into a storyline . For non-fiction books it can simply help you keep progress over time if you're intending to read and take time to digest a chapter or two over a given time frame.

Reading is so powerful, it allows to go to the unknown, aquire new ideas ,gain from other experiences. It shows intelligence, lucidity. Have a book, read and nourish ur mind. Finally, it enables you a global vision, it stabilizes, it offers peace

What can I say, reading is quite “magical” to me. I read for entertainment (yep, purely for fun) when I was little and never expected any effect on me, yet at this age of my life I do give credit to the past reading experience my inclination to think, to write, to reflect, and to be optimistic.
Recently, I have experienced some issues with money, self-improvement, and office socialization. When I got fed up and pick up a random book for a quick “escape,” for some reason, there’s always something in the book I picked that day that would speak to the circumstances I was bothered by: it could be a Confucius quote on point, it could be a fictional story where the heroine has similar struggles, etc. I found myself question: huh? Do books have their own mind and know exactly what I need?! Lol!
Yeah, when in doubt, go read a book 😉

Journey before destination. Reading isn’t about getting to the end. I’m in no hurry. I read each word for itself. I soak it in and enjoy it. I love the small moments and the big moments. And between audible and my kindle… I read ~9 hours per day. Audible for 8 hours during work (I work 9-10 hour shifts). Reading and chess have helped keep my brain sharp. I had a year or two in my late 20s where I didn’t do reading and/or chess, and I noticed a significant decline in my ability to focus. The brain needs exercise.

Reading improves imagination/visualization, in movies director does the visualization and you just see the output without having to put your brain.
As said at last part of video, reading maybe the way to be part of billionaire club. It is as important to read the correct book instead of something, if you want to improve.

There's a guy by the name of Stephen Krashen who talks about learning foreign languages through reading. I read short stories and novels in Spanish. I learned more Spanish through reading than trying to pick it up through hearing native Speakers speak and asking questions. If you want to learn a foreign language, reading is like putting a jetpack on your language learning. If you incorporate that with listening to native speakers, you can learn a lot in a matter of months. I truly think you could reach near native level within 5-10 years depending on if you need to learn a new script.

It takes a big ego to read, it can be very hard work! I accept this and I also love to read. Concentration is a virtue and power. I try to read from the heart, which can be very slow reading, picking up the fragile thread and not losing it till the end.

Great video, thanks! I would only add that it’s important to read book from authors who speak a different language than yours. I think that reading a translation is still an awesome way to read a book in a different language. Having read for quite a while I feel like many books now are nothing more than tv shows or movies in written form and I think that is still ok, but you can get a lot more value from reading a book that was not mass marketed initially.

Yeah. My elementary school (I'm 22 now) made me hate to read. We had to read 1 book per month and then write a report as 10 years olds. I know it was with good in intentions, but I hated it. Also I have mild, but noticeable dislexia which was completely ignored (nobody's fault). So that resulted to me hating the very mental process of reading. I'm trying to break it now and this video helped me to find motivation. So thank you.

The one who said books are stupid, is one himself if he is a book. The other bloke who said reading books will turn the reader into a psychopath or a lunatic must be into video games and dating and hook-up apps. I wonder what kind of logic they possess and which side of their families did they take after?

This video seems to argue why reading is useful as apposed to why reading books is useful.
I find that whenever people say reading it's too focused on books specifically despite there being many other forms of literature aside from books. My parents keep imploring I read books, and they say I spend too much time on my laptop despite the fact that I still read paragraphs worth of writing from websites, articles, other pieces that draw my attention, and even reviewing my own pieces of writing. I find reading to not introduce as much vocabulary as people may think. I read several book series growing up, and what I got from them was not a broad vocabulary. Reading will allow you to understand new words, and help you to understand unknown words in the future, but being able to recall them at the drop of a hat requires you to practice using them. This is why I find writing to be a much better substitute to reading to widen your vocabulary since it causes you to use new words as apposed to just reading them.
