As the Psalmist proclaims, "Bless God in the great congregation, the Lord, O you who are of Israel's fountain" (Psalm 68:26 ESV), and "Every day will I bless Thee; and I will praise Thy name forever and ever" (Psalm 145:2 KJV). Just as Simeon, after encountering Jesus, "took him up in his arms and blessed God" (Luke 2:28 ESV), we seek to lead others in a life of stewardship, relevant engagement, and practical living that honors and blesses the Lord.

*I think the problem is the word “tithe” as New Testament believers are not supposed to tithe out of compulsion but to “give” from the generosity of our heart. And give knowing that we are aiding in the advancement of the kingdom as well as helping those who were for the kingdom.*
*Also this notion that the way we are taught to tithe today (charismatic Pentecost circles generally) because it proceeds the law is a bit disingenuous. Because Abraham tithed to Melchizedek in Genesis 14, and it was **_once._** It wasn’t to the church / temple and it wasn’t on a **_monthly basis._** And it was spoils of war given to a Canaanite king / high priest. If we look at the example of Jacob in Genesis 28, Jacob makes a pact with God telling God, I will you 1/10 of everything you give me, **_if and only if_** God will be with me, feed me, clothe me, allow me to possess this land (according to the dream) and return to my fathers house safely; then will I give 1/10 back to God. It was conditional. God if you do this for me first then I promise to give 1/10. But preachers do not teach only give tithe if God does something particular for you first. It is rather taught as, ‘you need to give your money or you will be cursed because you are robbing God’ - then proceeds Malachi 3. - even though Malachi 3 talks about tithing FOOD to bring to the storehouse. Not MONEY.*
*We need to be teaching giving and giving out of **_Joy_** and not **_compulsion._** That will really change things in the church. Tithing has a history of abuse tied to it unfortunately, and the prosperity movement has misused and abused this concept of “give and it will come back to you” (Luke 6) because Jesus is talking here about how we treat one another. How we judge one another, how we forgive one another and the manner in which we give to one another. But so often this verse is used as “well if you give this amount in money you’re going to receive it as much more in return” which isn’t what the scripture is talking about.*
*Let’s teach giving and not tithing. And financial literacy*

Coming from the church I found Christ in, tithing was taught as something that honors our commitment to follow Christ. Now seeing a full view 13 years later, I whole heartedly agree with what you’re saying. It’s my pleasure to be able to give, because I was given so freely His gift. And I love to support the places I get my spiritual feedings. So church, music and soon ppl like you doing this great service.

In the end it is a heart issue that needs to be expressed in real terms to a local church. Sometimes it's not even a tithing issue but a lack of worship to God and trust in the the gift of local church and it's leaders.

The fundamental problem is that preachers have abused their flock by emphasising the tithe rather than teach the principle of giving.if someone is at a 5% level and they can be faithful with that let them be.
It's the Holyspirit that changes the hearts of men.many preachers have become a stumbling block for the sheep by using Malachi 3 as a whip.

Money is definitely a bondage for a lot of people. The problem is a heart issue. Many people thithe to get something from God in return, as if we could ever put Him in debt to us...paying money to get money....being promised healings and blessings for pay by pastors using scriptures out of context. One body, many parts. Some are in a season that the Lord has made them able to give, and some are not. We just need to have a right heart towards God in giving. It shouldn't be in expectation of personal gain, but by the leading of the Spirit in generosity of the heart. Not letting 1 hand know what the other is doing. Great topic points, God bless!

I was a tither for many years. I do believe in supporting your local body financially. I have learned that biblically speaking, studying the word of God in context. I would encourage people to read the book of Numbers in particular 18:2-6. Also the book of Leviticus verse 30 in particular. 11 out of the 12 tribes of Israel were commanded to tithe 10% to support the tribe of Levi. The levitical tribe were in charge of ministering and seeing to the other 11 tribesand taking care of the poor. After reading the entire book of Malachi and not just that 1 verse that has been manipulated it makes sense. I agree God may say give more or less. It's all about listening to Holy Spirit. I give more outside of the local church when Holy Spirit leads.

Most people don't realize this but tithing is not about giving money to the church. Tithing is a form of worship to God. It's away of acknowledging that He is your source of provision. Giving Him the first fruits of your income is a way of letting God know you are depending on Him not your check. I get a since of joy giving Him the first 10%.

Tithing is not a salvation issue. However, I have experienced and seen the yoke using malachi 3 has on believers today. Specifically using mal 3:8-9 to incite fear (you're cursed with a curse) in those that aren't giving and to the extent they are asked to give.
I believe that we should give and give and generously. Why wouldn't you want to give to a ministry you are benefiting from? Just give. It's so confusing to me that some of us don't want to walk in the full liberty Christ died for us to have. Give 5%, 10%, 20%, 30%, the whole check, whatever you're led to give.

Giving in the early church was to assist fellow believers in the local church and sometimes to believers in other cities. Too much money given in church goes toward the upkeep of buildings barely occupied while many church members suffer financially. Part of the issue is our obsession with thinking that in order to be a church family, you need to acquire a building.

True, its not about the percent, its about the heart. But here the thing, once you purpose what to give, it become spiritually legal and you have to give it. To purpose is to promise what to give from the heart and if you don't follow through, you lied and break your promise. Some might disagreed, but that's okay.

I must confess I don't tithe to my church. I have nothing against people who tithe to their church. That's alright. But I do not think it should be an obligation . However, my giving is over 20 percent of my income. I give directly to refugees in Africa and also help house refugees when they come to America. I have also been supporting my cousin whose husband left her in destitution with two children. In Zambia where I am originally from there is neither Child Support system nor welfare or the equivalent. I am extremely focused on ending child poverty through out the world. No child deserves to be destitute.

The recipients of tithes in the Old Testament are priests in service to God. In the New Covenant, we give freely to those who serve the Lord by serving us and 10% serves not as a rule but as reasonable guidance. I’m challenged from time to time and reminded that while I earn money, He gives me what I need and in kind I should be willing to provide for others.

From Leo: I have been tithing and giving above for 6 decades. Never tithed out of compulsion, but figured it was a good pattern for obedience. Always to a local church, and to missions before anything else. We have always had what we needed in lean times, and been blessed in good times. I have never felt like obedience was a plan to get rich, at least in this world. GOD has always been faithful, why shouldn't we?

  • @markb7067
    @markb7067 3 роки тому +1

Systematic, biblical tithes were taxes, not gifts, and they were never received from earned wages. The principal(s) of giving is an entirely different matter. Giving must be done by freewill choice, not by compulsion. That's not what a systematic, biblical tithe was. It was a payment, only not received as money. One can certainly choose to give 10% (or any amount) regularly to their local church and call it a "tithe" if they want but there's no biblical mandate to do so. However, giving is central to the Christian worldview whether it be money or otherwise.

I think some can give finances to support the church, while others can give time and talents. I know I get to involve myself at church, and I choose to spend my time with Family and Ministry outside of the church. I give from my net so the church. I trust they can spend it wisely on the matter of the church family. My wife and I had this conversation early in the marriage. It wasn't easy as neither of us was practicing Christians. When hard times hit, we continued, it created strife as I was less generous than when I had extra. 10 years later, we are more financially fit than ever before. I believe that it was our position on this matter that has brought us through many challenging financial times. In high times I can pray this is all yours, God I'm just the farmer, and in the low times, I can have the same prayer and say, God, this is all yours. I'm ready to work the harvest when you see fit.

Tithing/ giving is intended to be a joy and a blessing, even though sometimes it's not the case in the church today." For God loves a cheerful giver." 2Corinthians 9:7. I think what happens is the secular world sees certain preachers making a ton of money and it shows by what they wear ,drive ,live and what other things they spend their ( or our ) money on and unless that church is transparent it is no wonder why people are not fellowshipping. Of course a lot of it has to do with not managing our money right. Me included. Also it is not all about money. You can also be generous with your time ,open your home, provide food etc...

However the concept of charity or tzadaka is found both in the NT and OT, which is what the church should do. Give generously. If you want to see your place of worship able to overcome financial circumstances especially during Covid. Pray and give
Also rememberit's 10% of your crops and what you grow. Never really talks about money. Money is ok too though.

The churches that give a morsel of God’s word, usually will resort to hard pressing their church members for money, and it’s never enough. Being a good an effective pastor is no different then doing an exceptional job. The money will be there. The cup will runneth over. Being under the exceptional will always be teaching you more of Jesus.

The thing is Paul was vehemently teaching against circumcision (while circumcising Timothy for convenience sake)....so if you know tithing as taught today is wrong.. we might do well to vehemently deny tithing as a commandment to the NT church.(Even though you may give 10% as a base rule, I do).

Sad thing is that if you notice most churches ask for money right after praise and worship because people are emotional and on a spiritual high they use that against them because people are more likely to give and give more. That's called manipulation and its a sin. These pastors are gonna pay a hefty price on the day of Judgment

I don’t think religious institutions should demand their members money. Salvation is not for sale. Rich people aren’t more loved by the Lord . We should give secretly what we can. Financial situations of families are different and complicated. I’m not suggesting that people should hold their money. All should give as much as they can when they can. To be fair this normally means more than a minimum tithe. I however don’t belong to a small church. We give weekly in an envelope. The church as a physical structure is a small part of church in my opinion. Generosity and love should be shown quietly in a Christians everyday life. We are the church and are required to spread Gods’ words to everyone. I am very troubled by churches dictating to members membership fees. People will give. They know the Bible. We all know what God requires from us. Policing us takes away our freedom to comply willingly with his teachings.

I tithe faithfully and that’s my choice and have seen the fruits from my tithing. I’ve also experienced negative things that happened to me out of selfishness of not tithing. It gives me peace knowing that money doesn’t consume me. But check this out, if you’re investing the money into cigarettes, alcohol, drugs, frivolous materials that aren’t being used to advance the kingdom then that person has a serious problem especially if you call yourself a Christian. I use to battle those addictions along with the club life party lifestyle and I lost more than I gained from those bad decisions.

I don’t think the issue is should you give I think the real conversation is where should you give. We as Christians should always give whether it’s money or time or other resources but God has called us to give to more than just our local church. There are causes and family’s around us that need our resources as well as our local church and sometimes God directs us to give to different missions.

I Think we need to appreciate the types & shadows of scripture, Heb10:1 which was mentioned the The literal and principal of the law. tithing However & spiritual abuse on this topic goes deep & is very ingrained in church culture, what i what to bring out here is, what the gospels say about giving or generosity?
Luke 6:38 mentions giving & it shall be given however its not Specific & in what form, yet preachers label it as money, from Jesus's perspective in my opinion giving is a universal principle and when we limit our giving and generosity to money alone I think we missed the bigger picture, also give to whom, where limits the power of a culture Jesus was encouraging which today is overlooked. In Paul teaching mentioned its a heart issue & us Recognising the need for some equality in our generosity when people are in need & when people are doing well that we should consider others from our own abundance which leads towards Thanksgiving which God is glorified in everything 2Cor 9:12.
slightly moving across from this point I think all pastor & church leaders should work a day job otherwise it breads a social separation which in my opinion sill reflects a OT priestly ministry perspective & can lead to Some level of spiritual abuse in financial matters, ministry should not be heavily on one man, as we have enough resources to share the responsibility of the community and that's what the apostles did in serving tables and still maintaining preaching the gospel, and Jehovah's Witnesses seem to do it well too?
    something for us to consider🙏🏾

were going hungry. If a pastor is pulling down 100k a year and their members are on welfare. That is not fair. Is the pastor tithing, no by default they are not, the source they tithe to pays them. I'll give a tithe, but I think it is a little unfair.

It is about stewardship. Giving is a faith and heart issue. If we know that God controls and own all things and you will give with a cheerful heart and have faith that he will provide. Church officials set the 10% standard to keep the church running and also because they know people will not willingly give if you don't set a standard. To me, you should give to good soil and if you are getting fed at the local church.

What is the law we live under? If these questions of tithing are still a thing, then we are still on milk. Love is the law. Love God and your neighbor as yourself. Do this and live. If you follow love then you won't let your neighbor go hungry or homeless. There is no tithe. The fruit of repentance is...if one of you has two coats and someone has none, then give one away and the same with your food. What did Jesus say 3 times to Peter when he asked if he loved him? FEED my sheep. And if someone in your congregation is going hungry, you feed him. If he can't afford to pay his power, then you pay it. And sometimes it's going to cost you! Jesus said to sell all your possessions and follow him. And mostly the "church" is not doing this. They choose judgement over mercy. And this is a salvation issue as this is how we show that we love God. Nothing else matters next to this. 1 John3:14...We know we have passed from death to life, because we love each other. Anyone who does not love remains in death. And then in verse 16 -17 it gives the example of what that love is. 17...If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? Then in 19 says this is how we know we belong to the truth...

Jesus said to Peter the children are free. Not free from one thing but owe something else. He appreciated the widow's mite, but the children are the children.
Sabbath to a normal man might be this or might be that, but to a boss it is imperative he gives his employees and even his animals the day off.
Paul implies the old law impossible to keep so we are all sinners. Jesus tightens up some rules but his main bag is not sin, but forgiveness. Forgiveness is a work, but it is a necessity

10% was given to Levites, because they were not given an inheritance like the other tribes were, their inheritance was God. They didn't inherit land to grow crops and provide for themselves, their inheritance was serving God in the temple. So, the other tribes gave 10% to provide for them. That being said, I think you have to make a jump to say that the local church in some way acts as the Levites did under the old covenant, it's really not the same thing at all. The model of the modern church is really the problem to this thinking. Biblically speaking, we're all priests of God, but we elevate pastors and ministers above others, and so we view them as being "more priestly" than the average church attendee, so we give the money to them instead to handle. It's rare to see a church teach you how to be a good steward of money and how to give to the poor, instead they commonly teach how you should give to them, and they'll steward it for you, because you're not a priest like they are.

Yes that's a holy God. The righteousness of which is revealed in christ is simply understood hence the simplicity of the gospel. You have been invited out of the ways and ignorances the gentiles into the holy nation and priesthood of Isreal, ofcourse not the one below but the one above which we are all brought into by the spirit and by grace .so we are now invited to proticipate and not by compulsion. If you can't see this commen theme in the bible then you miss out on alot of the gospel..by grace you are save and by grace we act .we are created for good to God and to the world which the apostles make it clear. Christ shows us that grace is revealed to us so that we are empowered to walk in all his ways whether you like it or not just as Paul said (walk out your salvation with fear and trembling). Grace is for 1st ,the promise of salvation and 2ed,the way of sanctification just as was shown in the wilderness and so therefore to obay God and do his word is only a benefit to us in this life .

Tithes was from food grown or spoils of war and for certain people in the bible. They followed certain things in bible days but jesus did away with all that by dying on the cross. Jesus talked about helping people in need but did he ever say to give to a church. We’re the church where Christ resides if you accept Him as Savior. The church house is just a meeting house to be with other Christians and hear word of God, worship and sing. The churches are the one who created this tithes thing to raise money. We quit tithing in 2019 after 33 years of faithful tithing. We give and God has blessed us, not cursed us. We do help people in need or if someone needs money. Every time we get a new pastor, which is pretty often lately, the pastor wants to fix up the old church building so visitors will like it so maybe they will stay. To me, I don’t care how a church house looks like, I care more about the preacher/teacher telling the truth of the bible and not make up junk to tickle the ear.

The problem is you keep equating tithing with generosity. If tithing still stands then the tithe specifically belongs to God and should be separated to Him. Based on this doctrine, tithing is completely different from giving. Tithing is returning what is Gods. So it’s a bit disingenuous to keep equating tithing as generosity this is where you keep misunderstanding us. It’s not that people don’t want to be generous it’s about looking at whether the doctrine of tithe (not giving or being generous - but the doctrine that God has separated a specific portion of ur increase, for Himself. In my church this is also taught as the first fruit, that u are not tithing correctly unless u pay ur tithe 10% FIRST before every other expenditure because the first fruit belongs to God and tithing should not be an after thought. If your being very honest and true to scripture u will admit that tithing is not the same I have even been taught that tithing is RETURNING NOT GIVING. You keep thinking people don’t want to give whilst that might be right it misses the point of the discussion which is whether tithing under the NT is biblical. I would appreciate it if u stopped equating tithing to giving or at least have a discussion as to why you believe that tithing is the same as giving?

I just literally made a video saying I don't believe we're under a literal tithe just like we aren't under a literal sabbath. but the principle of giving holds true. I'm not sure how you missed that. I couldn't have been more clear. 10% is a good gage but it's more about the heart and sacrifice then it is about a percent. Our life is not our own. in order to gain your life you must lose it. one can't serve both God and Money. we have the average christian giving less than 2 or 3%. hopefully we can agree those numbers are ridiculous and should change.

    • @martinea199
      @martinea199 3 роки тому +1

Yes I absolutely agree with you Ruslan, that is a heartbreaking number and I think the discussion of generosity and giving is something that definitely needs to be had. The problem is that the principle of tithing has absolutely nothing to do with giving. The principle behind tithing is found in Deut 14:22 - God instructed tithing so that the people of Israel could learn to “Fear the Lord always” which could translate as revere, honour and worship the lord. I believe that all Christians should have a lifestyle of giving and that we should honour God with our finances. And just like you I have set 10% as my standard of giving which I hope to increase. These are all amazing points, but if we are to do the bible any justice I don’t think they should be brought into the topic of tithing for the reasons previously stated.
